    That “painterly” background style is very old-school Disney. If you want a great background study challenge go back a little further and look at what they were doing in the 60’s and 70’s... check out 101 Dalmatians and Aristocats in particular. Those backgrounds are absolutely phenomenal! That older school Disney artwork really is something to behold - and really captures a lot of what you were talking about with regards to fore, middle, and background.

      @imawonder  Před 3 lety +29

      Ohh yes definitely!! I adored both of those films growing up, I especially loved the sketchy nature of the animated characters in those older films as well!

    I just wanted to leave a slightly unrelated comment. But I'm about 10 weeks pregnant and have had hyperemesis (severe morning sickness) I can't watch TV or really anything that has a lot of movement. It makes me incredibly sick. But I found your channel and it's honestly been my safe haven for the last few months.. I'm not an artist of any kind but the beautiful artwork you create is mind blowing. Your channel has been the only real thing I've been able to watch with out getting sick. The bright colors have just been so cheery and been something I've really needed during these last few months. I agree so much with the character designs of older Disney movies! As an example of how they used to look different from each other, if you put the characters from Mulan, Hercules, and Hunchback of Notre Dame together, they would clash together. Like you said, Mulan is inspired by Chinese painting so the lines are very flowing and made of simple shapes. Hercules is the opposite, the designs are very angular in reference to Greek art, plus the design itself was done by a political cartoonist named Gerald Scarfe and so the characters are very exaggerated. Hunchback, in contrast, renders its characters with much more shading than in other movies which makes them look almost 3-dimensional.
    But if you put the characters from Tangled, Frozen, Moana, and Raya together they would look like they all came from the same movie. It’s a shame cause we know from plenty of video games that 3D can have a lot of different styles too but Disney is more focused on shit like “how realistic can we make the water?”

    That scene with Mulan and her father is my favourite! The song Refection is so good but when her father comforts her and tells her about flowers blooming late and they're under a magnolia tree, I just thought ahhh, these inner little subtle meanings since mulan is magnolia in chinese!!

    Heartily agree on the different styles of Disney films being so prevalent during the 2D animation. I'm also very interested in the fact that you said Mulan and Hercules (two of my faves ;) ) because to me they both have an emphasis on swirl patterns, but used in strikingly different ways. As you said, they are reminiscent of the era they're set in. I'm hoping Disney try more experiments again, I loved the blend of 2D and 3D they did with Paperman. I'm finding that the 3D films are relying much more on colour palettes to differentiate rather than styles.
    Anyway, love this! You're making me want to watch Mulan again and do some screencap studies (which I've been meaning to do for ages but just never get around to doing).

    Mulan is the first Disney heroine who doesn't need a man to feel worth and finds it in being true to herself ❤ when she's on the mountain and she says "Maybe I didn't go for my father. Maybe what I really wanted was to prove I could do things right, so when I looked in the mirror, Id see someone worthwhile. But I was wrong ..I see nothing." That makes me burst into tears every time 😢 ❤🐉

    Love this! Agree Hercules is one of my underrated favorites too, I love Meg. I enjoy traditional and computer animation. I remember seeing stuff like finding Nemo and the thing that always bugged me was the water. They could never get water/liquid textures right, it looked like gel. I always said if they get the water right they'll be gold. Then finding dory came out and the contrast was incredible. I just had this "they did it!! They finally got water!!" moment in the theatre. (My friends think I'm weird). Then frozen 2 the water when they broke the damn. I almost cried. It was so hyperrealistic it was like a magic trick. (I get impressed about dumb stuff like that). That's what I do, I trace the progress of pixar/disney computer animation by the quality of the water. I can't be the only one who obsessed over stuff like that? Right?

      Yess Meg is amazing, so sassy!!
      Not weird at all!! It's so funny you mention water because I distinctly remember the scene in The Incredibles - when the plane crashes and they're floundering in the water - I remember thinking it just didn't look quite right. I haven't seen Frozen 2 but it's great to know how far the animation has come!

    Thoroughly enjoyed watching this tutorial. Thank you. I’m a surface pattern designer toying and dabbling with a more illustrative style, just for personal development. I’ve started watching Disney movies the last couple of years, I deffo love some of the older ones in terms of artistic style such as Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and Sleeping Beauty. Klaus, however, is one of my faves too.

    Wowww Tina you really outdid yourself!😭😭😭i was so excited when i saw the thumbnail and the two studies totally have this old-school Disney feeling while still having some imawonder vibes in there! For me the most memorable thing about the old Disney movies would be the colored lines, always darker than the local color and i remember always doing my lineart with colored fineliners because i wanted to draw my disney princesses as accurate as possible xD

    Answer to your question about favorite Disney film, I have to say Tarzan (love the songs and motion) and Atlantis, don't know what about it makes it one of my favorite, but I love to have it play on the background while doing some other stuff. Other Disney movies that I enjoy watching is Emperor's new groove and Mulan. I grew up with dubbed Disney and Emperor's new groove has hilarious dubs.

    So a couple weeks ago my friend shared her Disney plus account with me and we watched mulan together because I had only seen parts of it, and omg....like it was so iconic. I don't know how I went so long in my life without being exposed to that. I had no idea "Make a man out of you" was that much of a BOP like towards the end of the song I got actual chills. but I was sooooo mad with the way they treated her after they found out she was a girl (still kinda laughing at the scene where they're like "look...a WOMAN" *gasps everywhere*), like she literally just saved them from destruction and they were ready to kill her anyway??? that's so insane. Also, I actually screamed in the ending fight against Shan Yu when she did that trick with the fan. That is some top tier badass queen energy, I would've asked for her hand in marriage IMMEDIATELY. Ok I'm done fangirling. I think. This was so inspiring and cool to watch! I definitely want to try screen cap redraws and other studies, they're really helpful when I get burned out from original drawings. Thank you for this video! It always provides great company when drawing ^^

    • @imawonder
      @imawonder  Před 3 lety +1

      AHH, I'm so happy to for you that you finally got to experience the full film in all it's iconic glory!
      The fact they leave her on the mountain is totally absurd but speaks volumes of it's time period and the weight of the risk of her decision
      YESS, using the fan to her advantage in the end is so satisfying!!
      I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for the lovely comment! I always enjoy fangirling hahaha
