    I think the nickname “jelly gouache” came from the kids snacks (of which there are so many varieties of them around the world) of jelly or jello in a small plastic cup similar to the how HIMI packages their paints, where you pull off the plastic top and just dig in. Now I think a lot of people don’t know where the nickname came from and just assume it’s a different type of gouache or that’s actual name for it but really it’s just gouache in a tub

      ive had mine for a year now and some of them had dried out. they are (obviously) not jelly anymore but when you add some water they work exactly the same. in that case i use them like watercolors, using water and adding the paints onto a palette and when you paint with them, its the same as any gouache only it is probably less opaque. but the white paint, which i use basically everytime, isnt that dry, it seems like it keeps the consistency probably because i add water frequently. also, some of them are less dry than the other, some are (most of them) still jelly, only some seem to be completely dried

  • @standingaloof
    @standingaloof Pƙed 2 lety +560

    It’s nice to see someone actually use this gouache like gouache and gradually build up layers from thin to thick. In a lot of the review videos I watched on this brand, the artists were taking huge globs of paint and applying it thickly to the paper like hard bodied acrylic paint.
    If I remember correctly, gouache will actually crack if applied too thickly, because it isn’t flexible like acrylic paint.
    Also, here’s my caption: “If this cat bus goes under 50mph, it’ll explode.”

    • @tafferine388
      @tafferine388 Pƙed 2 lety +53

      Gouache is a medium between acrylic and watercolor, every artist utilizes it differently. Some are comfortable doing it thicker and some are comfortable doing thinner buildups. There’s never a wrong way to paint!

    • @standingaloof
      @standingaloof Pƙed 2 lety +32

      @@tafferine388 Oh? I'd heard from one of my professors in college that layering gouache too thickly will cause it to crack, because it isn't a flexible polymer like acrylic paint.
      In addition to how my professor painted, I'd always seen other gouache artists building up layers carefully from thin to thick (the tea to butter method), and I'd assumed that the cracking issue was part of the reason to paint that way, rather than applying thick opaque layers to start, like with hard-bodied acrylics. It's not a matter of taste, but of limitations of the medium.
      I know there's acrylic gouache, which I'd imagine you could apply thickly, but I'd think the majority of illustrators don't want their artwork that they've painstakingly painted to suddenly crack when that wasn't the intended effect. And I think this jelly gouache isn't acrylic gouache, correct?

    • @suckstosuck7605
      @suckstosuck7605 Pƙed 2 lety +74

      @@standingaloof your professor was right, gouache will start to crack if layered to thickly, but that mostly means you can’t build up any impasto unlike acrylic. starting immediately with a thick consistency is totally fine it just means you have to be certain in your color/placement and cannot layer on top of it (without lifting any off). some styles actually utilize that for a more blocked out comic style of painting.

    The fact that gouache is so different when it dries is why I keep a sample sheet handy at all times and pick the colors based on that and not the way they look when I squeeze them out of the tube. It makes me kinda anxious while I actually paint, but I keep reminding myself to trust the process and it always turns out better than expected. In a way, it helped me have more faith in myself....trust that I chose the right colors and that the final result will be what I want. I have bought some recently (like 5 months ago) and though they were a bit expensive for me due to shipping, I can 100% say they are worth the buy. I'm by no means a profesional artist, just an amateur that sometimes paints to kill the time, but they are pretty fun to use. What I'm trying to say is that if you're in doubt about buying them, I say you should go for it because they are worth it.

    I bought the pallet when it first came out, like 3 or 4 years ago. I don't use it very often so now they're dried up bricks, which take forever to rewet. I've tried to get the cups back to their original form, it's a week long process of adding water and mixing every day... I'm just going to stick to paint tubes, much easier.

      They actually designed for art students who need to go through tons of paints when they are preparing for the art school entrance exam. And I think it also designed to dry quicker than regular paints since you don’t want you exam painting to get smudged when stacking together.
