- In this video I'm comparing 12 of the most popular Professional level gouache brands available today. I bought everything with my own money so I'm not obligated to be nice! These are my HONEST thoughts and reviews about each brand. I'll show you swatches, do test paintings, talk about lightfastness and price, and all my thoughts about paint consistency and opacity. I was surprised by a few of these brands, and I think you will be too!

It just occurred to me how excited I am to literally watch paint dry. Only fellow artists will understand 😂 thank you Sarah ❤️
🤣
SAME!!
Indeed 😂😂😂
made me smile - right backatcha :)
Omg yes! I watched a watercolor swatch video and one color turned from a beautiful cobalt blue to drying with a bit of berry red in it. I watched it and gasped at how beautiful it turned over the span of a few minutes.
NOTE: Regarding the brand comparisons & water usage. This is purely experimental to compare the TRUE consistency of each brand, which is only possible if I use the *same* amount of water for each brand. In a "normal" painting session with any single brand, you'd use as much water as necessary to get it to work. So don't take my experiment as the end-all-be-all answer. They are all great to be honest. My comparison shows the inherent quality of each consistency - it's up to you to add as much water as needed to get it to perform how YOU like it.
It's nearly impossible to compare so many brands without nitpicking little things. Any of these would be a good purchase, and so much of it depends on your technique.
And yes I realize I switched the alphabetical order of Schmincke & Shinhan ...my brain stopped working after endless days of editing/narrating 😂 Anyways...enjoy!
I don’t understand the switching of Schminke and shin Han- are you saying if going down the alphabet that Schminke should be before shin Han or the actual demonstration was mixed up?
@@janaemerson3344 yes alphabetically I messed up
This comparison is unparalleled. Not only your in-depth information on consistency opacity and binder/additives etc. But doing a painting with each ( even sharing your technique 8 paintings is so cool) -- just great content Sarah... you're the best
Thank you!
Would you be interested in creating a formulation of quality guoache, Sarah?
@@karylm23 what do you mean?
I'm just curious if you would ever offer your own set of gouache at some point just like you offer brushes! With all this amazing research you've been doing, we trust what you think!
This video is of archival quality...should be kept as Reference in museums for Art reference with regards to Gouache. All the companies should award you. Really I mean it. This is a humongous effort👏👏👏👏Well done!!!
This is so good! Winsor and Newton are the first and only Gouache set that I've bought, I got them because of James Gurney, and they've been really nice!
I'd be surprised if the honey based ones mold more easily considering honey is naturally antibacterial and as itself actually cannot mold or go bad.
it doesn't go mouldy for me, but I had ants eat my painting inside when I wasn't watching
This is such a useful video Sarah , thankyou so much for taking the time to make it xxx
I'm so so glad you are reviewing Daler Rowney. It was hard looking for a review when I was thinking of buying them. It's one of the brands I can get my hands on very easily because they sell it in the art section of the bookstore in my city. Daniel Smith's are so expensive that buying just one tube feels like a splurge. It's hard to justify that for a hobbyist like me. But now that I get a validation (hahah) for DR I don't need to think about Daniel Smith anymore 🤣
That’s great you can get it locally!
The Daler Rowney is really nice to use and as long as you use the colourfast colours it should look great for decades. I think it's an amazing paint for the price and perfect for the person who mostly does sketchbook paintings or is a hobbyist.
Thank you for the review! I am a totally newbie to Gouache and started with W&N yesterday. I thought about buying Royal Talens because it comes in bigger glasses to a very affordable price, but after your review and some comments here I rather buy Schmincke Horadam because I am from Germany (Schmicke is a german brand) and their Gouache is only a bit pricier (approx. 7€ per tube) than the W&N.
I just started with watercolor and now it’s making me question if I picked the right medium. Your swatches was so satisfying to watch. I like that you also included the prices. I’m ready to hoard me some gouache paint now and probably go broke with these supplies before I can use them.
Well I used Royal Talens all my life in interior design but of course it should be diluted with water! That is why they call it opaque watercolors!
Thank you for this awesome review! I just wanted to mention that in my limited experience M Graham gouache rewets better than the others I've tried. For those of us that don't paint with gouache often or just want to carry a tiny kit with some dry pans, it's a great choice for that reason.
Great tip!
Wow that’s a great amount of research & testing of brands. I can definitely see a difference between the brands & the final results of each of the paintings. I really appreciate you doing this testing & making this gouache database. Thanks so much for sharing your time, thoughts, & knowledge of gouache!! 💕🎨😃
I've been rewatching some of these older videos of yours, also just watched your dried palette video. I'm still fascinated with the fact that the M. Graham, with its honey, dries faster than other gouaches; whereas you say here that the Daniel Smith dries faster than other brands when using out of tube, but then it ends up rewetting so nicely in your dry palette! Seems like a paradox. Thanks again for your tireless work on our behalf!
Very well done review - one might say: highly pigmented with information. Hmm just demonstrated I'm an old fart artist - readers - groan if you must - that's how old people roll - inflicting bad jokes on other 😁.
Seriously - this is how paint reviews should be done. Not just swatching and opacity testing ...how the paint handles is critical for how well it will work for the individual artist.
Haha love it
I used the Royal Talens gouache for a class as a requirement and another class required a few W&N gouache... The difference was staggering and I think you're spot on with your review, I had the exact same experiences. Thank you for taking the time to do this!
What a relief for us that love Schmincke it is the issue of ox gall that makes you hesitant to put this gouache among the best gouaches in your fabulous review. I understand this can be an issue for vegans and vegetarians but for us carnivores it is, I suspect, no great problem. I honestly think it is better to use everything you can of an animal instead of just slaughtering animals for just the meat ( that is why I never ever throw away food or anyything else that is animal based as an animal has given its life for it or being kept to produce it like wool and milk/ cheese). This is of course not the place to discuss veganism vs eating meat or other animal, products so I am not after to stir a controversy! Everyone has a right to their opinion and if using animal products is someting an artist would dislike it s great you say if there is such a product in the paints! I have to say I became rather worried that any other gouache would turn out to be better than Schmincke as I have invested quite a lot of my poor earnings into getting some tubes... But I have to admit becoming curious of the Holbein paint and the M Graham and even Daler Rowney after seeing this review. Thank you for all the effort !
Thank you for your answer. I can understand you do not want to use anything that has animal based products and find your way of reasoning-only to use those colours that contain ox gall if you cannot find the same paint in another brand.
Sorry, this may seem way out of topic, but why do you find large cattle awful? I find cows rather endearing, epecially the fluffier ones, like Belted Galloways. They would make an excellent subject to paint in gouache!
Fantastic video! As someone with sensory issues, hearing how the paints feel when using them is so helpful for me! Like you have said, with enough time and effort, you can make any product work for you... but hearing your thoughts on the tactile experience and seeing how they behave in a painting is so helpful. Thank you for your hard work. I always love your insights!
I totally agree. I am grateful to be hearing about the sensory experience.
Holy cow Sarah! Such a great review! Thanks for the time and effort. Listening to your thoughts while watching you paint the lovely coastal seascapes was mesmerizing. And I never realized until this video that you had a gouache database. Cool! My conclusions about brands were so similar to yours, so I was happy to hear that from a more prolific, experienced gouache painter. I was particularly interested in your flow and stickiness comments. I paint differently with gouache, using more water, much like I would transparent watercolor unless I specifically need the opacity somewhere, so those observations were also valuable. This will be a video I and many others will return to often I predict. Thanks again!
Thank you Steve! I remember watching your gouache brand video a while back - though at the time I was exclusively using W&N so I was happy to see we shared a love for that brand 😁 I find your views on them interesting because I think you have a broad view of the painting industry (having done design and absolutely excellent at watercolors)
This is so great! Thanks a million! Very helpful!

This is such a great primer on the current prominent brands on the pro-grade gouache scene. I can tell you took the time to make it well. I was ready to buy one of the brands that you really didn’t like, so you not only saved me $$ but time and frustration, too. I know that everyone is different… but by helping me make more mindful choices, you’ve also made my painting experiences so much more fun. Come to think of it, all of your videos have done that for me 😉 Thank you, Sarah!
That's great to hear! The consistency thing is definitely very personal...to be honest the only one I didn't like was Royal Talens, so the rest are pretty close. But there were some clear 'winners' in my mind!
Same lol I was thinking of buying some royal talens tubes but now I think I'll stick to W&N
Both gouache videos today are excellent! Thanks!
Oh my goodness! So much work so much valuable info!! You’re amazing. Thank you ❤
