2023 was the year I picked up gouache properly, and it was your blog posts and videos that really helped me make my decisions on colours! So thank you for that! Gouache really is such a rewarding medium, and it teaches you so much about painting. I'm usually a get all the colours kind of girl, but thanks to your advice I've stuck to a smaller amount so I mix most of my colours, and that's been so rewarding too. And the paper thing you mention, so true. Gouache's unpickiness has allowed me to use up papers I didn't love too much, and create beautiful pieces regardless!

To clean a stained plastic palette a melamine sponge (Mr. Clean Magic Eraser) works wonderfully. Just moisten the sponge and rub it across the surface. It has always taken all the stains out for me. I have also tried sample product from Turners that is designed to clean palettes - “Turner Palette Cleaner” that works well also. I just found that I always have magic eraser sponges on hand so it’s one less thing I need to buy. Hope this helps! Thank you Sarah for all your hard work you put into your videos. Your attention to detail and your teaching style is so appreciated! Thank You!

loved hearing all your advice. FYI - The clear plastic sheet (or perspex is what I actually use) is the best and fantastic. If i want a white palette I put a white piece of paper underneath the clear and I have a white palette. if i want a grey palette I put a grey piece of paper underneath, black etc and so on. you can put a beige piece of paper underneath your clear one and then you have the beige palette you want

If you keep your studio pallet in a zip lock baggie, it stays wet for ages!! No need for anything special. I spray my paints with a bit of water after every session and I’m good to go for the next session!

Really enjoying the video but just had to stop part way to say that I use vintage square or rectangular enamelware lids / trays as palettes - they are wonderful to mix on (I'm not a fan of plastic trays) and are lighter than the ceramic. Bonus is that I can also attach paintboxes, water dishes, or anything else I want using magnets. I have a variety of sizes, all white with either blue or black edges.

Back again, at the end of the video. Incredibly helpful video! A lot of videos I watch, I am left with the sense that the video maker is having to focus on commercial interest/capacity to earn from sponsorship and free supplies, and the advice leans towards disingenuous and marketing. This was such a genuine, self-aware ('this is what I like because I work like this, if you do too you might'), and helpful/practical list of supplies, with deep insights into different supplies performance pros and cons depending on your particular use and preferences, which makes it so easy to understand what will be worth looking into myself. Best art video I've watched in months. Thanks heaps. You have a new subscriber! ❤

I'm really glad it's helpful! That's a big reason I don't do sponsorships, and if I accept any art supplies to try I tell the company I will be completely honest even if I don't like it. I think we need more artists telling it like it is!

Thank you - this was super helpful! I agree with you about the limited palette. When I first tried gouache, I got the 24 Himi set, and while I didn’t mind using the paint, I found that many colors to be so overwhelming that I never wanted to use it. I’ve since switched to tubes and have 8 colors, including white and black, and that is much more manageable!

I was giggling as I watched your palette evolution because I have made the same journey, literally all the same or similar palette setups over time 😂 I've also switched to mainly dried gouache for plein air (and couch painting in the next room lol) but I still use the plastic palette you started with @1:57, for in the studio, only I cut a sponge to fit the entire surface area of the tray, and cut palette paper to cover that. Then when I'm done I pop it back in the palette and store the whole thing like that. (Upside down basically - I wish I could post a photo!) It's become a pretty good little diy wet palette. Thank you for this and all your videos, Sarah! 💜

I literally have everything you showed except the beige sketchbook which I ordered. And I'm A watercolorist. 2024 is supposed to be my gouache year. I'm finding I get in my studio and just stare at my gouache while I'm painting with WC. But now that you've convinced me I can use it dry I think I have a little more courage. Also check out David R. Becker. He paints in one go and uses gouache with his watercolor all the time. So I don't see why I couldn't gradually adapt my palette. I've painted with all the other mediums and can't figure out why gouache feels so intimidating. Hoping the sketchbook will get me going. Thank you for sharing your work.

Not that anyone will want to do this, but I made myself a great wet palette by using an 18-well airtight watercolor palette and then adding... wait for it... an ultrathin heavy absorbant menspad that I soaked and placed in the mixing area of the palette. Haven't used my gouache for two months (injured a shoulder) but the paint is still wet.

I also use the blue painters tape & the yellow more delicate tacky painters tape label Frogger Tape. I am noticing now that I too spend more money for the quality watercolor paper/blocks & sketchbooks. I also used a really cheap set of watercolor brushes for my gouache. I really enjoy using it with my watercolor. I shared a video about using watercolor with white gouache, a good strategy to get started czcams.com/video/YNLk3i5lCu4/video.html

Such a great video! I tried gouache for the first time in 2019, loved it and then completely abandoned it. I want to get back into it, because I miss this medium. But I feel so overwhelmed by everything! Last year I got myself some W&N Designer's gouache tubes after diving into your extensive reviews and the comparison videos and I really love this paint, but wow. Still don't know where to start, haha.

Having midtone mixing surface is great regardless of paper color: the white of the paper makes it tricky to judge the values initially. For that reason I always do an underpainting with watercolor, and I prefer transparent mixing palettes that I can put on my gray table.

Great video and information in your newsletter so useful for beginners. I paint much like you and my palette is always a mess. In studio setting, I have 2 stay wet palettes, a small homemade one, and a larger Mastersons brand. Last year purchased the Cup Easels Superlite easel that I can attach to a tripod. It has its own palette wells with air tight lid and mixing tray (with option to buy additional ones to change out between watercolour and gouache). Works great and fits in my backpack. Can use it without the tripod, on my lap or picnic table. I’m thinking the Portable Painter palette with dry gouache would be good for international travel as even smaller setup. Thank you Sarah!

It’s funny watching you talk about all these pallets because I have every single one that you have except for the grass one. And I even have more than that. I guess I’ve tried everything imaginable. I do kind of wanna whittle myself down to a couple and get rid of the rest because it’s sometimes choice overload.

Thank you so much Sarah! I've been learned a lot from you! The pallets, cleaning pallets, brushes, surfaces, different brands of gouaches! you're an amazing Gouache Artist, and I want to thank you, because I'm starting out, and for me, you have an important resources for gouache media, and I'm very thankful for all you do. 🥰🤍❤️🥰💞 I have Winsor and Newton gouache and recently get Turner gouache, and I'm in love of this gouaches! I've been trying the Strathmore papers, mix media, 300gm, black, and beige toned paper, and I loved it! And cold pressed and hot pressed watercolors papers too. And I buy a first pallet you have, the sealed one, because of your recommendation, and I loved it too. Many thanks!!!❤❤❤❤❤

I have to admit I’m a sketchbook junkie. Want to try the S&B Nova sketchbook in beige, but decided to fill the others I have first before purchasing that one. I currently use the S&B Beta A5 Portrait one mostly for travel because of the 140LB weight paper which is great for all mediums, both wet and dry. I like that it’s lightweight and can open flat for double page spread option. Also like watercolour pads that are coil bound for sketching and painting. Thanks Sarah! Again, you share so much expertise for beginners and those new to gouache or watercolour plein air painting.

Btw I skipped over this video thinking I’d already watched it. The bottom edge of the thumbnail border is similar to the “already watched” bar on my smart tv. So glad I caught it on my CZcams iphone app.

17:11 not sure if you've tried an enamel butcher tray but they are a great alternative to a ceramic tray that is much lighter! Love them.

Wow, your videos are so informative and thorough! Thank you! Didn't you create a set of brushes that are for sale? If you did, if I may be so bold, I think that you should have spent time to really feature YOUR amazing brushes here, after all, one needs brushes to paint. You spent a lifetime of experience to create them. It's okay to share them, and it's okay to try to make a living. I'm also sure anyone who purchases them would greatly benefit too!

There is a little masterson stay wet pallet. So I have the large and the small. The small one is perfect for grabbing on the go. Specially like I know we’re talking about squash here but if you’re doing a tiny oil or acrylic painting I have one for each of those.

Haha that definitely happened to me, I bought a sealing wet gouache palette largely based on your old videos. Still haven't filled it 😆 I do love the Hahnemuhle washi, which I bought inspired by you as well, also I love Hahnemuhle paper. It's a bit hard to find in the US and I didn't see the plain kind, I do find the branding a little distracting!

Thank you for all the wonderful information so that we can make more informed decisions about our supplies. I use the blue tape too, most of the time. Like you I never notice it. I assume it's because I started with blue tape.

I hadn't intended to try gouache at least for awhile, but I decided I wanted some white ... and then when I went to buy, the W&N Designer starter (6 colors) was half price so I have that. Except for white (snow and tuxedo cat markings and whiskers), I will wait a bit and work on watercolor/ink and wash but saved this video - thank you.
All of the palette info is especially helpful to me. I thought I was overdoing it by buying 3 palettes so am feeling a bit better about that 🤣. I bought that same water bucket and at first thought it was 2 large ... put it away in a closet. Last week, tried it and am really liking it vs small water glasses.

Yesterday I had a "play day" ... made a database of my watercolors and noted which I will not replace, which I use ... enlightening to me! Then I got out the gouache and decided to play with color mixing. The starter set has primary red, primary blue, primary yellow, middle green, zinc white and ivory black. I spent a lot of time with red-blue-yellow and amazed myself at what I could mix! So, I now want to paint with it and have been reviewing all of your "beginner gouache" videos and blog posts. I don't need more supplies to play so am about ready to paint 🙂

Great video! I can't wait to get your box. I will scrape off the channels on my portable painter, I wondered how you got the larger mixing surface. One question that you have addressed in a previous video but I don't recall the answer. How do you stop mold? Thanks.

I put beige cheap masking tape over the blue painters tape…to get rid of the colour but still have the ease of getting the tape off..as the cheap beige masking tape tears used by itself…no one said u can’t layer the tape and it works
