  • This video shows you how to repair a rear view mirror. My rear-view mirror fell off the windshield in my 1988 Ford Bronco so I bought a Permatex Rearview Mirror Adhesive kit and fixed it. It was really easy.

    Thank you so much for this video! I was looking up estimates and was told I could expect to pay between $135 to $200 and another person I called said they may have to take the windshield out. I found your video and purchased the adhesive for less than $3 and I needed a special tool to unscrew the button. That was less than $2. So again, thank you so much for this video.

      You can remove the mirror mount. You would need to heat the mount enough to soften the glue enough to be able to use pliers to carefully twist it off. The big catch is if you use to much heat or use to much force to pull the mount from the glass you can crack the windshield. I do windshields and have to swap mounts sometimes.

      Maybe a heat gun would work. Or, if it’s not been on too long, you might be able to pry it off with a putty knife. But I would be very very careful you don’t wanna break your windshield. Hey Brian, This video is running 3 years old now but its good and interactive. I live in the tropics and i recently had my mirror fall off my windscreen. Its been really annoying trying to find an adhesive that actually will work. What i mean is, they all fail eventually as in the mirror falls off the windshield again... The first option held up for about 2 weeks, the second about 2 days. Our temperatures can be up in the 30s during the days and one of the packages said work within a certain temperature, so i installed it in the night (the one that held up for 2 weeks) I tried in the day and it was shorter period of time. Do me a favor and tell me if yours is still holding; that would be of great help to me. Im currently reinstalling with a loctite brand glue and have my fingers crossed. I've used the one you demonstrated with as well. Thanks bro for your time.

      I’m dealing with the same issue, and I also used the permatex. I’m about to buy some more adhesive and try again. Some things I’ve been advised to do that the instructions don’t tell you to do: make sure the metal is FLAT (especially if it’s a parts store new replacement since they are cheap quality), scuff the surfaces (both the metal and the glass) with sandpaper, and wait longer to attach your mirror.
      My first go at it, I took the one drip thing very literally, and it was a very small drop (much less than the one drop on this video). I think if I’d added a second drop it might have worked.
      1970 F100 :)

    • @chirkware
      @chirkware Před 3 lety

      Mine is now on and staying on after following the process I outlined above.
      Once I had the glass cleaned, I held the metal where I wanted it, and attached a long piece of blue painters tape to hold it in place. I then added more tape below horizontally atop that tape. Then pealed it down with the metal attached to the tape, rubbed the prep wipe on both metal and glass, waited a minute, two drops of the glue, pressed the metal in place while straightening the tape to properly position it, then held pressure for a minute. Added more tape to hold it snug and waited 24 hours. That's been about two months and the mirror is holding just fine.

    Folks there are a lot of things this guy does absolutely wrong... I am not trying to be a jerk... but I am still recommending that you look up the permatex video.... this guy does get a lot of it right but
    Important! DO NOT install this button in very hot weather ( or cold for that matter) .. Also, when cleaning the button , scrape it like he said... however , very important, lay some sandpaper on a very flat surface face up and 'lightly' sand the the button using a circular motion... this step is important for 3 reasons... one it cleans it while keeping it flat... and 2 it leaves micro crosshatches, this causes it to accept the glue better and even though you can't really see the cross hatches but they are there ... the bond will be better... 3rdly....Its pretty much impossible to get all the glue off with just a razor blade... It will be pretty evident why if you grab some 220 grit sand paper after you've already scraped it and think its clean ... you will see all the glue you missed..unfortunately tou just do the best you can on the glass using the razor blade.... but at least you're only gluing the mirror with only half ad much glue than if you hadn't sanded the button..
    While this guy does give some good information, he's still not doing it correctly... I'm sure hes good person just wanting to help others and I dont want to dis him.. but I also don't want to see a broken windshield either , or someone have their rearview mirror fall off while in town ... you know its going to happen in rush hour traffic or when your trying to back up..
    So please go to the permatex sight...
