  • I hired a professional windshield repair technician and tested 7 Kits: Rain-X, Permatex, JB-Weld, ClearShield, Athlon Tools, Unioon, Antswish. Windshield crack repair kits compared resin quality (strength and scratch resistance), ability to push resin into damaged windshield and overall repair quality. I hired a professional repair technician to make a repair and to then provide analysis of each of the windshield repairs made using each brand.
    I bought all of the repair products and supplies used to test the products to ensure an unbiased review. So, thank you for supporting the channel.

    I used to work at Safelite as a repair tech from 2005 to 2008 in California. Our kit was very similar to the clearshield and the professional's kit (big suction cup with one end acting as a cantilever to apply pressure to the nozzle). We did all our work under a UV shield bubble to get the best results but the process was pretty much identical. I'm very impressed with the results of some of these kits. I got a chip a half inch from the edge of my windshield and it spread out to a 6" crack extending from the chip towards the center. I brought the car to Safelite and all they did was rub on the crack extending it another 2" and then tell me it can't be repaired and I need a new windshield for $600. I drove home, ordered the Rain-X kit on Amazon, and sealed the chip and the crack. Because the chip was next to the edge of the windsheld I used my fingers to hold the other half of the suction cups down for ten minutes while the epoxy did its thing.
    It's been over six months and the crack hasn't spread any further. It's visible when the light shines on it a certain way but overall I'm very pleased at saving $585 on the repair.

    I have used the Permatex kit, and it has held up great over the last few years going from high temps, and a few trips into the snow too. The big thing is making sure the area around the "sealing sticky ring" is 100% clean, or the resin WILL force out when you do the "pressurize" step. Otherwise, for tiny chips, it is not a bad kit.

      I’ve used the permatex on some pretty big stars. Most of the time they hide pretty good, but even if they’re partially visible yet they seem to stop the spread. The challenge I have is getting to it before the spread starts. PA also has similar policies. This can apparently increase your insurance rate if you switch. I quoted out a few options and forgot about the windshield "claim". It came up during the final stages of obtaining the policy and it raises the overall premium 10%

      Additional information - contacting my insurance company after a crack that required full-replacement of my windshield. Statefarm told me that this would not, by itself, raise my premiums for insurance. However, it is considered part of your claims record (although it IS labelled as a windshield claim and therefore specified differently than an accident) and if you are someone with multiple claims, the claim associated with your windshield may be a factor in raising your rates if you end up filing more claims in a short period of time. This seems subjective and varies by insurance company in the state. It may make sense to pay $12-13 in order to DIY a rock chip in order to not initiate this claim through your insurance. especially if you are someone with a history of speeding or recent accidents.

    • @stevesether
      @stevesether Před 9 měsíci +2

      That reminds me of what happened in MN with windshield repair decades ago.
      One company decided to give away a free box of steaks with each windshield repair. It was advertised relentlessly, and since insurance paid for the repair, the extra money for the "free" steaks (i.e. a kickback) was a big bonus for people to pick this company. Soon everyone that did windshield repairs had to have some give-away, sometimes exceeding the cost of the repair and costing hundreds of dollars.
      Eventually this attracted the attention of the legislature, since of course all this did was increase car insurance premiums. They eventually banned this practice of "free gifts" outright.

    • @MarkTrades__

      @@stevesether smart move. Down here it's lead to a scam industry of windshield replacements that don't need to happen in order to collect premiums. Hearing you took extra time to practice usage makes me very happy. I feel like that has been one of the longest running complaints in the comments & I hope you will do so for products you are unfamiliar with in the future. While there are plenty of objective metrics to rate products by, a subjective opinion by someone with experience can be just as valuable & I think some of that can be gained by taking time to familiarize yourself with the tools. These videos are already a fantastic resource for anyone looking to buy a tool & I appreciate your dedication to the channel!

    I've been doing windshield repair/replacements for about 10 years now. The first repair kit I bought, and still use to this day, is Glass Mechanix. Pricey kits, but I achieve very nice repairs with it. One thing i'm glad you showed is adding a bit of heat (flame or blow dryer) to the inside of the windshield on the last pressure cycle. You can literally watch the resin flow into the legs of the cracks when doing so. It's very satisfying to watch that happen.
    With the Glass Mechanix kit (and with other professional high end kits) you only need to do vacuum and pressure cycles for a couple minutes. Very quick and efficient.

      @@oTEMPE5To you're absolutely right. My windshield crack although not too deep, was over 6-7 inches long. Using a repair kit wouldn't have done much. A replacement is covered in the insurance and the windshield repair shop does the insurance paperwork! Quite straightforward and more reliable in the long run.

    Used the rainx kit several times after being fed up with professionals (cost and avliability) in my area. You need to tap the windscreen from the other side to remove air for best results. I've recommended it to others. Works on phone screens too if the cracks small enough.

      Next time try pushing a centerpunch through the resin injector without the screw in it to probe the crack open (like, let the punch get inside the pit) , don't use more than around 1kg of force, It allows flow by opening the runs/shell and allows excess air to escape. If it's a star chip without any shelling you need to crack it open more with the centerpunch and something to lightly tap the back with. I'm a certified tech, hope this helps for your next repair.
