Eric, I always enjoy your videos. I've been a parts guy for over 30 years and helped a few customers with reinstalling their mirror. My advice has been to clean the button while on the mirror, better control and safer. Down here in South Georgia, the heat is the culprit. I, also, recommend to scratch or scuff up the button as well. Thanks again.

When Dad bought a new Tundra, he sold me his old 74 Chevy. I remember the day I went to get it legal. I pulled up to the police station to get a VIN inspection, got out and slammed the door (had to, bad hinge bushings) and a big chunk of rust falls off the door. Went to the insurance agent, got out and slammed the door and the mirror falls off. Went and bought some of that Permatex and glued the mirror back on and had lunch while waiting for it to cure.
One hour later the mirror is back on, so I go to the court house for my plates, got out and slammed the door and the mirror falls off again. I thought I had done something wrong because it looked like there was some clear goo still stuck to the windshield. Nope. The Permatex bonded perfectly to the glass. The glue didn't fail, the glass did. That spot where I thought there was goo stuck to the windshield? Not glue. That was a divot, a half inch crater in the glass. Permatex 1, Chevy 0.

Done that one a couple times. Apparently I have a pet gorilla around here that that I was unaware of that especially likes to yank on that rear view mirror until it cries "uncle".
Hey Eric, would you please consider doing a piece on the TPMS, how it works, how to do a relearn, symptoms of failing tire sensors, and how changes in outside fahrenheit temps from warmer to colder temps, especially, affects the tire pressure and TPMS. Oh! Your special entry of a little Brakleen is always welcome, too. (I never knew a brake job could be so entertaining prior to you.) Anyway, every vehicle I own is pre-TPMS and the same gorilla asked me immediately prior to taking a road trip why the TPMS showed 24 psi in the tire and two cheap tire pressure gauges agreed there was actually 30 psi of air in that tire. I'm going with the cheap gauges on this one. 😉.
Thanks again for taking the time to give us the great education and fine humor. It's very much appreciated during this unusual time and consider swag is on its way.

I'm sure glad Eric that Mrs O has nothing to worry about if she pops out to the shop with you talking like that, be a worry if the hands was doing something like rubbing that mirror down and she hears you screaming ' OH BABY!' LIFE TO THE FULL WITH A RAZOR BLADE. Great to see some basic videos for the anybody can do jobs on their vehicles.

Short or Long SMA Videos, I'm watching! I work at an Auto Parts retailer. We sell the exact Permatex adhesive kit.
I can tell you stories about the DIY customers and their attempts with this. They say the cleaned both surfaces razor clean, They don't . They attempt to glue it right over old adhesive, the OEM plastic adhesive decal, over duct tape, dirt, etc.
If they do follow the instructions, they clean the surface before marking the exact spot where the metal tab attaches; then it is
so off-sided,the sunvisor comes down and hit's it. They glue it upside down, or glue the mirror side of the tab to the windshield.
The funniest one I have seen,I walk out to the customers car in the lot, HE had attached the tab to the outside of the windshield.

I think I have not had to do this in around 20 years. Back in the 90's, I kept a blister pack of the mirror glue in each car, and had to use a few of them. After I scraped the surfaces clean, I would also wipe the area with rubbing alcohol. If you kept an 80's car for a long time (like I did), you could have to do this repair 2 or 3 times on the same car. I do miss when the mirrors were screwed on to the body above the windshield.

I got a tip from a winshield guy once that told me to just use clear silicone to reinstall those rearview mirrors. I was getting a new windshield and it came up about having one that used to fall off all the time and that's when he told me to do it that way and have ever since. I've never had one I did that to fall off so I guess it is a good way.
