Rear View Mirror Keeps Falling Off

  • This video documents my attempt to permanently (?) fix the rear view mirror that has fallen off in the past 12 months.
    I've tried Permatex, 3M, and Loctite glues that are specifically designed for rear view mirrors, but they all failed under the hot temperature within weeks to few months.
    So this time, I did more deep research to find a glue that will hold up better in the hot temperature, and selected Gorilla Epoxy, which is supposed to hold up to 180F degrees.
    Those that need more detail instructions on how to remove and reinstall the rear view mirror, you can refer to my previous video.

    I wish there was a way to put a metal plate over the windshield and bolt the mirror through the glass to the plate.

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  Před 2 lety +2

      Sorry for the delayed reply, but I also thought about your "metal plate" idea before as well. Since the point of failure is the mounting base that attaches to the windshield, I googled to see if there is a wide base (surface that attaches to the windshield) but there aren't any. For cars with heavy rear view mirrors, like GS300/GS350, with many functions are too heavy to be supported by wimpy base. If someone can make a wider based (perhaps twice the current surface size), that should be very effective. I'll see if I can improvise one.

    I used Gorilla Super glue "gel." It holds (allegedly) in heat up to 200° F. I have a Honda Odyssey and have the same problem with the fancy/heavy mirror falling off, I parked in direct sunlight, but I don't use the window shade like you had. So far so good it seems really strong honestly. I let it cure for 24 hours with the tape like yourself. I used the Permatex as well it just falls over time...

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  Před 2 lety +2

      Sorry, I missed this message earlier. It lasted 11 months, and then failed, when I parked the car out in sun with the sunshield up for few days. That's much better than failure after days or weeks with other glues. The problem is this mirror is very heavy with lots of functions, and it only fails when exposed to hot sun for a long hours, especially with the sunshield cover which reflects all the heat upwards to the mirror mounting point.
      As long as I keep the car in shaded areas, and opposite direction of the sunlight, the Gorilla glue seems to hold up well. However, I'm still in search of stronger glue that can hold up higher temperature than 180F that Gorilla glue is rated form. I'm going to check, but I'm pretty sure that mirror mounting point gets above 180F especially with the sunshield covering the front windshield. This is why mirror falls off more in hot weather areas than cold areas.

    is it still holding up? I've got 1 vehicle that the mirror does the same thing - falls off about 3x per year. Just like you I've tried all the different brands of rearview adhesive and none like the TX sun

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  Před rokem +2

      I've answered this several times before. In my case, when I used the sunshade on the windshield, I measured the temperature of the spot where the mirror is glued to that was reading 180+F degrees. I then looked for the highest heat rating and this was the glue that I used. But it's also at near max rating of this glue. So it did fall once again after almost a year I believe after repeatedly using the sunshade. But I glued it back and I didn't use sunshade and it's holding nearly 2 years now. That said, I've found other higher temperature glues, but I'm exactly sure it's suitable for this application, but if this ever falls again, I'll give it a try.

    It was quite sunny here today and temperature hit 91. The mirror bracket area was registering close to 170 F degrees. I think when we hit 100, temp may exceed the Gorilla Epoxy’s max temperature of 180F degrees.

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  Před 2 lety

      It's ironic that you ask at this time.
      This was holding up just fine until just recently,
      wife was messing with the oversized sunshield that puts pressure on the mirror,
      and when she went to remove the sunshield after sitting out in the sun for few hours,
      she yanked on the sunshield which pulled on the mirror,
      and the mirror fell off. Arggg....
      I just gorilla-glued it back on again, but here is the problem with this mirror.
      1. It's got auto-dimming, compass, and homelink features, so that makes this mirror much heavier than the regular ones.
      2. Every time this fell, it coincided with having sunshield, which deflects all the hot sun heat upwards towards the mirror mounting area.
      3. This mirror never fell off when sunshield was not being used.
      Gorilla glue is rated up to 180F degrees,
      but in the hot sunny day with the sunshield up,
      I've measured the mirror mounting area to exceed that temperature.
      So I plan to just not use the sunshield and try to park in opposite direction of the sun,
      and I'm also looking for much higher temperature glue...if I can find it.
      What is your experience on rear view mirrors and glues?

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  Před rokem +1

      So I’m further study it’s the high temperature that melts the glue and makes these things fall. This gorilla glue is rated to 180-185 f degrees. So it’ll hold as long as you don’t use a sunshade under hot sun. Sunshade reflects all the heat up right to the mirror glue area and makes those heavy mirrors fall

    • @TheCRYSTALLURE
      @TheCRYSTALLURE Před rokem

      @@DIYLifeSkills yea it’s getting hotter and more humid here (never lived in humid weather this extensive before) so I think (personally for my car) that’s what got it to fall and it’s the first time it’s even fallen. I’ve been in Arizona w/ my car & it gets realllly hot as everyone knows and never had this happen😅.
      Only issue I’m having now is sliding it back on. For some reason I think one of the prongs that clutches to the metal piece glued on the windshield is a little wider than it needs to be, idk how though. But the e6000 glue kept that piece secure to the mirror. 😩 so thank goodness all it is now is securing it back.

      Yeah, the Gorilla glue instruction says you need to keep it undisturbed for 30 minutes initially, and no one can hold the mirror that long, so you have to use some tape. In addition, it take full 24 hours for the glue to cure. So it's best to put the tape on for 24 hours for the best result.
