  • Today, I'm joined around the bar table by my good friend and Catholic Answers' apologist Jimmy Akin to talk about what Aquinas had to say about the Occult. (Cue spooky music).
    Wow, Aquinas has a LOT to say about this topic.
    Here are just a few of the things you'll learn about during my conversation with Jimmy:
    - What Aquinas had to say about Psychic Powers
    - Werewolves
    - Crystal Healing
    - Astrology
    - Ghosts
    So, buckle up, turn on all the lights so you don't get scared, and let's talk about the Occult!

    The recitation of prayers such as 'say the Our Father three times' in these old recipes weren't a superstition. They were a timing mechanism. For a lot of old recipes they knew they had to grind an herb, stir a mixture, or boil a liquid for a certain amount of time, but didn't have watches. But they did have prayer and the length of time it took to recite a prayer (or recite it several times) worked as a timer. Yes, they were also praying, but the prayers had a specific cadence from being in Latin and made for an easy timing mechanism. There are academics who've written entire theses on this. It's a great rabbit hole to research because the stuff they've learned about ancient medicine is wild!

      Requesting one mass or more could sort the case out. I read about girls who met Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's ghost : he was in Purgatory for having practiced spiritism (turning tables). I have also read (not in catholic books) that dead persons' ghost could appear to ask for the reparation (satisfaction) of some injustice they commited.

    @Matt Fradd So, when it comes to ghosts appearing to people, especially the souls of the damned such as a Jacob Marley character, I think the story Christ tells in the Gospel of the rich man and Lazarus could be a good example of this from scripture. When he asks God to let him appear to his brothers in a Jacob Marly kinda way to warn them to change their ways and live a better life to save their souls from getting his fate, from being damned. Even though God denies his request and says they have Moses and the prophets yet do not listen, I think it implies he thought that this was possible, meaning he may have heard of such a thing happening.

Totally separate from the points...I'm glad you don't have an Alexa. One day I'll get around to putting a great big anti-Amazon piece on Facebook so my Christian friends can see why using Amazon is absolutely anti-Biblical. Amazon don't pay enough tax wherever they operate; they undercut local economies and create massive job losses across the world; their worker ethics at warehouses are unkind to say the least, and they throw money at the Seattle chamber of commerce to ensure that their tax deductions remain pitifully low. As long as corporations don't pay enough tax, we have austerity measures and society suffers. I know this isn't quite the forum for my angst, but I think Christians really need to make a stand.

      The Catholic faith is that Our Lady was taken to heaven with her glorious body. However the common opinion among theologian is that he body does not come back onto Earth when she appears (otherwise everybody would see her), but only her spirit who appears. @@serenity2228 Thanks. What's the hold up tho? Any insights, rumors, guesses?
      Neither of the three popes since the phenomenon supposedly started taking place, was a fan either and Francis had openly mocked it: "Mother Mary is not a postal worker."
      I watched a shocking documentary on it, with original footage literally proving at least one of the seers was definitely not in trance during the experience.
      They were filming them, one of the film crew purposely made a sudden move towards this one girl supposedly in trance, and she twitched. No doubt about it.
      The excuses they came up with are beyond ridiculous.
      And as far as I'm familiar with catholic rules and doctrines, the outright disobedience toward the local bishop (lasting for almost 40 years mind you), is only one of many things.
      The local bishop was against this, because his priests had made a quite thorough investigation of all the claims, by interviewing the seers right after the event. Get this; once they'd really started probing, they didn't start with some obscure theological trap. They specifically started by asking such basic questions, I as a non-catholic would be able to answer immediately.
      They (the seers) tripped up on that already, claiming Mary said a bunch of things incompatible with Christianity in general, not to mention Catholicism.
      There was a bunch of nonsense like Mother Mary predicting a soccer game result and then a bunch of weird new agey woo that was just becoming really popular in Europe at the time. She also insisted in those visions that all religions are equal...etc.

    • @Cantor131
      @Cantor131 Před 3 lety

      The real reason for magnets is that electrons emit an electric force, but also, when they move, a magnetic force (the lines of the magnetic force is in circles around their trajectory). When they spin, the magnetic force along the axis in at its maximum intensity (while the "way back" dispersed all around). In most materials, electrons spin around all possible axes, so the magnetic forces cancel each other. But magnets have this property that all electrons spin along parallel axes and therefore the magnetic forces cumulate. In iron, electrons are induced by the magnets to spinning also in the same axis, thus making it a complementary magnet, however it is hard to keep iron magnetized. That's also why making electricity go in a coil makes the coil a magnet.

    In Shintoism, even some living humans and animals are kami(gods), a historical example is Emperor. Some kami are guardians of certain locations, for a wise wolf which guards the harvest of a village. Some kami might be an image which look of upon it cures a venomous snake bite. Though, most kami are beings which a worshipped as being guardians, not as being creators. Among Shinto practitioners, there are a large number which also believe in the existence of the Christian God.
    I want ask you an important question. Remember that 'the LORD your God is the god of gods and the lord of lords...'
    If your village has been guarded for hundreds or even thousands of years without any problems with exception of the one time your local guardian kami wasn't worshiped/venerated (No one likes working for free.); do you think you and your village would:
    A) Abandon your guardian kami in favour of the foreign Christian God? (In away wouldn't you be like Judas Iscariot)
    B) Reject the Christian god without at lest a basic understand what he taught? (After being told about hell, I doubt many that believe in an afterlife would be that careless.)
    C) Reject your guardian kami as a demon just because he doesn't easy the Christian World View.
    Or D) Give to the LORD God was is do the LORD God and given to your guardian kami what is do your guardian kami?
    D seems like the most nature choice.

    I’m confused!!!!! If someone goes to a medium and talks to their dead relative (I do know that is a mortal sin) are they speaking to their relative or a demon? Because if it is their relative and the relative is in Heaven or Purgatory then the dead relative is partaking in the mortal sin and I doubt God would allow that? So it must be a demon? Then is that the reason the church says No to this, because we are communicating with demons?

    • @allisgrace1313
      @allisgrace1313 Před 3 lety +2

      Yes. This is my understanding. I'm a convert from neo-paganism. Had a regular relationship with two mediums over the ten + years I was in that lifestyle. I wish I would have understood this fact back then. Often times they were right in their predictions or when channeling, they would have language as the person would have used, in the messages they were sharing from dead loved ones. I had absolutely no understanding of angels or demons at the time. I didn't realize demons could easily know any of that information. I assumed it could only be what I thought it was. After I understood how manipulative demons are and how good they are at it did I understand who God would forbid it.
      On the other hand, my father lost his brother when he was 11 years old. My uncle was 18 and they both had rooms upstairs, other brother was grown and out of the house and the parents bedroom was downstairs. I suppose my uncle being so much older than my dad, it was always a comfort that he wasn't alone upstairs at night by himself. Now he was, and he was so scared trying to fall asleep every night, after my uncle passed. After a few days of dealing with this, my father saw his brother standing at the foot of his bed. He looked at him and said "Tommy, there's no need to be afraid. Everything is going to be fine. Go to sleep." From that night on my dad had peace and never struggled with the fear of sleeping alone upstairs. My dad is a retired police officer. A very no no-sense type of man. He knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that this experience was real. I believe that is the type of thing God does perhaps on occasion allow.

    • @Cantor131
      @Cantor131 Před 3 lety +2

      As a general rule, souls of the departed do not come at our command (or that of a medium). On the other side, demons love to play tricks on us. Second, souls would manifest themselves on dreams, or appear directly, not communicating through tables or anything material. The question of partaking the sin is interesting. My belief is that, in the hypothetic case where it is not a demon who would answer, the dead person would request and obtain permission from God, so that would be fine on his/her side. See the episode where King Saul asks the witch of Endor to speak to the dead prophet Samuel. Samuel rebuffs Saul about having called him.
