I was a young, gay man in my early 20s when this song came out and the dance floor would be PACKED with joy and everyone knew all the words and we’d dance like there was no tomorrow. Cherished memories of my youth ❤❤❤

I was a young, gay man in my early 20s about 10 years AFTER this song came out and it was STILL packing the dance floor to capacity and giving us that perfect moment of euphoria!

Paul Jabara wrote this song along with Paul Shaffer who is from the late show with David Letterman.
....Oh, my GOD....this is going to be One of the HARDEST "Trivia Times" I've EVER given!...there's *SO MUCH* for this tune!! ...***WEATHER GIRLS TRIVIA TIME!!*** (3:46)
....how am I going to DO this!? ....Martha & Izadora Rhodes (originally) were Sylvester's backing Singers ("Two Tons O' Fun")and changed the game of DISCO, bringing Gospel influenced 'BBW' vocals, to 70's Dance Music....then, Disco died, in 1981....and, so did their careers....
- Paul Jabara (0:58) ("Last Dance", etc.) was suffering, too....he needed a BIG hit again, and worked with session singers to create a 1982 LP ("Paul Jabara & Friends"), which featured this Song....Empress!? ...E-V-E-R-Y Diva turned it down! ...the list...

- ....uh-OH....THEN, It became BIG with G-y Men (Summer 1982), and hit the Dance charts... *HARD!* ...It hit #1 Dance (Dec. 1982) for 2 weeks (after climbing the charts for 4 MONTHS), and EVERYONE was talking about it, early 1983!!
- ..THEN, they had to make an "emergency" Video...with NO BUDGET! ...they actually used a Bed-bug infested MATTRESS off the Street, that the Girls laid on, and they got BITTEN! (5:01)
- this is the 'uncensored' version, that (originally) censored THIS part (4:27), and THIS Guy (5:36) was the UPS Man, in Madonna's "Who's That Girl" flick, in 1987....
....Empress, this Video was cheaper than CHEAP, even for 1982!! ....but it became One the the ***BIGGEST DANCE RECORDS OF ALL-TIME!!!!*** ...Whew......

Martha Wash is one of my favourite singers 😄👏 You know the song where she sings out "Everybody dance now!!" 😁 There's also a superb performance by Martha on a Two Tons of Fun song "Taking Away Your Space". She also sang on the 90's house classics by Black Box "Strike It Up", "I Don't Know Anybody Else", "Everybody, Everybody" & "Fantasy". Anything Martha sang, she was always a knockout 🙌🙏💗

Theee vampiest video ever and I’m here for it!! Martha Wash ( main singer) was badly treated in the biz. She was the true voice of “ Gonna Make You Sweat” and others . Producers chose a skinny lip syncing model for the video. 😢
This is Martha Wash who you know, and Izora Armstead who was Sylveste's backup singers, "Two Tons O' Fun". They were renamed "The Weather Girls" to do this song and made two albums. Izora has passed but Martha is one of the most incredible singers ever.

I had forgotten how absolutely hilarious this video was. I'm pretty sure seeing the video on MTV was also the 1st time I heard it. And I probably laughed my way through it--like I did just now on rewatch. It is a really good song though.

Massive hit. Great vocals...You should check out the story of Martha Wash and exploitation if you have not as yet. As a another person said in the comments this song was written specifically for Donna Summer by Paul Jabara.She apparently told him the equivalent of HELL NO..Lol
...and, that 'equivalent', was to send Paul a BIBLE and say that she would PRAY for him! ...It was documented as truth, by Paul's longtime assistant in 1989....Paul passed in 1992, and Donna honored him by writing him a 'new' verse for his Song, "Something's Missing In My Life" for his 1992 Greatest Hits CD....

It's funny to me that I think of this video and version of the song as the top of the line version but can't listen to it without hearing all of Rupaul's interjections from the version they did with Martha i the lat 1990s. This song is just so embedded in gay male culture. And also Martha Wash is a legend and amazing live and really sweet in person, and my signed copy of the Listen to the People single is one of the few cds I still own...

what in the gay hell did I just watch? That video was pure ham with a side of corn with Velveeta poured on it. 🤣🤣🤣 I didn't remember the video being this bad, but maybe I never saw it. The budget went into the trench coats and speedos, and not much else. I've seen the remake with RuPaul, and Geri Halliwell's cover, though.
