Marlene Dietrich did the thing with the chair while singing "Falling in Love Again" in 1930 film The Blue Angel. Cabaret is a 1972 film set in Berlin during the final year of the Weimar Republic before the Nazis took over Germany in 1932. The film is based on a Broadway musical from 1966, which is based on a book of recollections about those times and the impending sense of doom many of the people in those stories felt. The rise of fascism is an ever-present undercurrent throughout the film making it resonate with aspects of the present situation in the United States. okay, shoutout to dietrich for being the 1st!
To be clear, in the film The Blue Angel, Dietrich straddled a chair while singing "Falling in Love Again," but she did not dance during that song. The "Mein Herr" choreography in Cabaret was definitely a nod to Dietrich and that earlier film. There are other homages in Cabaret, including one to the original film version of The Threepenny Opera, but the trend of dancing on and around a chair was actually put into motion by Fosse and Minnelli, in Cabaret.
Actually the idea of the chair came from Bob Fosse, the amazing choreographer.
Marlene Dietrich had worked the chair, but I don’t think they used any tricks to nail it down etc.
I might be wrong. I do know that the nailed chair and the nailed shoe heels on stage (Michael Jackson) have been around since vaudeville, mostly for novelty/comic numbers.
Here it wasn’t done for an exaggerated or superhuman effect, it was done to anchor the dance routine.

LIza is simply amazing - what a talent. She well deserved the Oscar she won for this role.
Cabaret is an amazing film. It’s so relevant to today and Liza is incredible in this role.
I’ve watched this a million times, but I find myself focusing on her expressive arms. They’re so fluid and when the camera is away from her eloquent facial expressions, it’s her arms that keep my attention - very unusual when you’re watching a dancer.
I’m huge Diana Ross fan, but Liza deserved it that year.

Liza was a real "showgirl". That talent was passed down. This heavily influenced the Keep It Together routine from The Blonde Ambition tour.

Loved watching this again with you! It's an incredible film - Bob Fosse's direction, camera angles and choreography are so unique and wonderful. Liza is brilliant, as is Joel Gray (won Supporting Actor Oscar) as the Emcee. Such a killer number. Ms. Ross is equally amazing in Lady Sings The Blues, so I would have been happy with either of them winning that year.
Director Bob Fosse came up with the chair and choreography. Lizas great and Fosse was a Genius.
I recall seeing LIZA perform on stage in London some years ago.. To be honest , I always had the idea that she seemed somewhat "sweaty"..! To be honest having seen her live I can confirm this, I have Never seen anyone perform with such "gusto" and energy, except maybe "Meatloaf"..!! "Cabaret " has always been a firm favourite of mine, in part because it was the first mainstream musical to break the "Hollywood" mould of the squeaky clean and sickly sweet, "Happy Ever " genre, which had been "Tinsel Towns" norm. One of the most powerful songs I think and certainly the most disturbing by inference, was not sung by the redoubtable and deserved Oscar Winning Ms. Minelli. I am referring to the song, "Tomorrow Belongs to Me", sung innocently enough at the start by a German "Wunderkind" in the garden of a country Gasthof. As the song progresses one sickingly sees the reaction of those present in the garden. A very potent illustration of the powerful, but sinister, appeal of the fledgling Nazi Party in the early days of the 1930's..!!

It is true Liza performed this routine, but it was the brain child of the great Bob Fosse.
Cabaret is a fantastic movie and Liza Minnelli is perfect for the role. She is saucy and at times vunerable. Liza Minnelli is the daughter of Judy Garland.
This movie is one of the best musical theatre adaptations on film. Directed by Broadway choreographer Bob Fosse, it also stars Joel Grey (father of Jennifer Grey from "Dirty Dancing") as the cabaret emcee. Aside from the wonderful music, singing and dancing, it is also an insightful portrait of Berlin as Nazism was taking hold.

The stage musical "Cabaret" has also been revived numerous times on Broadway and in London's West End.
Hopefully you watch the rest of the movie. It still holds the records as the movie that won the most Oscars without winning. Best picture. Of course, best picture of that year was the godfather so that’s no surprise there. Any other year it probably would’ve won best picture.
Also, I don’t think Hollywood was ready for bisexuality in 1972. Not to mention abortion and Nazis in a musical.

Growing up. I never really got the hype over Liza. I thought she was kinda odd. And then I saw Cabaret and ive been a fan ever since. Liza is so cool. She did a great song with the Pet Shop Boys "Losing my Mind". There's another cool number from Cabaret. "Money" is a song she performs with the creepy emcee.

Check out her concert film "Liza with a Z," which can be found on streaming platforms. It was directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, right after Cabaret. They both won Emmys for it.
She's,a fabulous singer dancer but this wasnt for me. Much much enjoyed her doing New York, New York.

This is a updated version of the Blue Angel performance by Dietrich, copied first and done many times over by Madonna. Liza is talented, but I think this film suffers a little bit from overactive acting that was popular at the time

@@EmpressReacts ....YES.... don't get me wrong...Miss Ross's acting debut was BIG, for a Singer's 1st role, but Liza's 'flick' wasn't important...what she brought to it, in terms of choreography, style, Fashion, singing, & acting, WAS....
@RBS, U2's Bono once told Minnelli, backstage at a benefit, that she was rock's best-kept secret, because she set the bar with her live performances and connection with her audiences. He told her that numerous rock stars of that era strived to accomplish in their performances what she did in hers. In fact, Adam Ant paid tribute to her, by name, in one of his songs. Also, both Alice Cooper and David Bowie were huge fans of Cabaret, and the film had an obvious influence on the Glam Rock movement. In that sense, I'd say her "flick" was important.
