Also, if you want to take the FE, DO IT BEFORE GRADUATING. I made the mistake of not taking it before graduating, I completely regret it.

What trapped me into my phone addiction was that I mostly consume "valuable" content. So long time I had the feeling, that watching one video or short after another was not a bad thing or even had a value, if there was something to learn from it. What a bs. Educational or motivational videos are completely worthless, when you go directly to the next one instead of implementing the lesson, that you could take away from it. But it took me so long to realize this, that I was already on a point, where it was extremely hard, to break that habit.

Lately I place my cellphone in a see through plastic container with a sealed lid. On top of that I put a sticky note that reads "control". This enables me to see what comes in and reinforces my willpower. The voice mail takes care of calls and notifications will always be there. Check your phone on breaks, every 2- 3hours for 10-15 minutes.
You can survive without your smartphone, just be more intentional about when you use it. Friction definitely helps; turn notifications off, go on airplane mode, logout from apps or even turn your phone OFF if you need to concentrate. You are smarter than your phone, control it before it controls you.

    • @Lostintrepid

CZcams is a really hard habit to break. Especially because people try to classify it as different to social media. Sure it's not social media, but it does have infinite scroll, and has the same incentives as social media - to keep you on the platform as long as possible for ad revenue. So its just as addictive. The same goes for things like Reddit.

That's very true! Though I think something else to keep in mind that being aware of the core of where the addictions come is one thing, but it's another thing entirely to really fix the core itself (especially if you're not really certain whether or not it's something you want fixed or not).
In my experience, I know that my electronic addiction has come from a mixture of aimlessness (while I'm job-searching, I also have a lot of free time to browse compared to when I was in college, and I've been hoping a job will get me back on a set schedule), and from pressure of keeping connected with my friends.
I've had experience (back when smartphones were slowly getting more introduced societally) where an anxious friend mine opened up about fears of what if I and/or our other friends were purposefully ignoring them if we didn't respond to a text right away (they still had a flip-phone at the time, though I don't know if they've ever upgraded). I don't keep much contact with that friend anymore, but I've found I still carry a nervous habit that I need to respond to texts immediately after my experience with my anxious friend (especially since a lot of my other friends now have varying degrees of anxiety themselves too).

I needed pinterest for work but at some part it become not a work thing anymore. Everytime I was bored or just had a free sec I would of open the app and scroll and sometimes I was doing that for 60 to 90min!!
Than I logged out, it really helped. Now every time I open pinterest to "scroll" I see the log in page and I remind myself that I don't need it right now.

Great video. I think it's also useful to replace the dopamine hit with something that pushes you in the right direction to give you a bit of momentum. For me, if I'm on the computer, I can just open up a document and write. If I don't have a computer, I have a paper and pen and brainstorm, it helps organise the jumbled thoughts in your head and gives you a bit of a hit that you've made progress on your thoughts or project. Meditation can also be useful if you've learned how to do it, especially when your brain is fizzled or you're low on sleep, but you need to be able to avoid distractions after you finish, otherwise you use up all the regeneration you just built up.

This video comes at a real good time for me. I recently started creating videos and have to spend more time on social media doing research for my chosen topics.
I realised that by opening Twitter, Instagram or Reddit to do research, my focus would shift to fitness videos, memes and politics, increasing the time I spend on social media and decreasing the time I actually do research.
Logging out is such a simple way to put up a temporary barrier to be stop the impulsive scrolling and actually get some work done.

5 years ago, 2017, i was a freshman student who is targetting to get a math degree. But ever since i started playing videogames at 9th grade, my dreams were broken in just half a year. Every day ive been trying to remove 10 minutes each day to the point where i could go a whole day without my device. And now? I got first place in my math class + got a math degree. Here are some tips that i truly wanna share.
-try to do something that you like.
Examples: Trying something new such as drawing, art, or studying.
-try to ask someone to lock your phone. This stops you from getting distracted.
-IF you dont have a job on social media/anything important that you need to do on the internet, try completely clearing your apps. This removes ALL motivation to even touch you phone.
-when you feel bored at home w/o your electronics, try making schedules for the future or visit a friend's house. I made a schedule for the whole month that worked out really well
-look around for toys, you may even find them fun and could pass HOURS in a day.
I just wanna say, thank you for this video. This is a life changer to nowadays kids.

One thing that has been working for me is using focus mood at night because I procrastinate most at that point, replacing scrolling time with reading, and dedicating specific days to when I use my phone for the most time-sucking activities.
It also helps that my phone's battery drains fast and lags (due to damage) so I use it less to make it last and because it's annoying to wait.

Thanks so much for your video, Tom! I tried to apply this technique immediately but I wasn't able to find a function that automatically logs you out of certain apps. After that, I decided to install an app locker. I locked the time-draining apps with a long password and now every time I tap Instagram, for example, I'm required to enter this insanely long password. This already works :)
