- This is what nobody tells you about success.
In this video, you’ll learn one trick that could make you more successful than 99% of people. It's not what you think. And even if you nail it, it won't necessarily make you happy. So enjoy the Red Bull, pizza, and... cocaine? No, don't enjoy the cocaine. Just the pizza.

The successful contrarian move here was to make a successful contrarian video about being a successful contrarian. How contrarian!
I totally agree - Great thinking - Great video! But I think the real question should be how to get ahead of 80% of people. Because the benefit of achieving this level of success would lead to greater opportunities, recognition, and personal satisfaction that most people can only dream about. I would love to watch a video from you about this! 😊
@@scottmoroschan4729 not very successful contrarian of you aye
I'd like to be as successful as you but I definitely don't want to look as floppy and overweight as you. So I'll probably stick to my eating habits
Same thought here :D ... no, I mean, f@#$ Y#@! 😂
Is it really contrarian? We probably knew it before watching, you just systemed that thoughts. Every reformer of society bringed something new. And it don't need to be contrarian -- in example, current progress of AI is not contrarian.
Quote of the year:
"Extreme success is not gonna make you happy. It amplifies who you already are and how you already feel."
👍👍
I’m bouta feel like a god
Although most of the video was very wise and well-supported, this quote is one thing I'd like a little more proof on. From my experience, people change. A lot. Especially after specific events and changes in their life, such as becoming successful.
Like Lazarus before me, I question this. It's stock-standard knowledge for things like sudden fortune or fame. (The economic, psychology & even health outcomes stats for lottery winners 5 years after is really depressing.) However, it does _not_ apply to hard fought knowledge, expertise, wealth, or relationships. This is _particularly_ true in cases of struggling (eg economically).
Working and becoming more successful in academics didn't make me "more" depressed. It _fixed_ my anxiety at initial bad marks and thus cut my depression off at the source. Likewise going from below the poverty line to a successful job doesn't make someone _more_ stressed about their finances. They may eventually develop new stressors due to an adjusted definition of success. However, it's nearly guaranteed that a way to fix many mental health disorders in the US would be better education and more opportunities for those of low SES.
"More of myself" is only half the story.
@@lazarussevy2777 dude, that's what he said. If the heat in hot water is amplified, it becomes vapour. He didn't say they'll be the same. He said they'll be an amplified version of themselves.
That's why if someone gets rich and seems to have changed, then there was probably a part of that person you didn't know before that got amplified.
Dunno if this makes sense.
"Why do I want to become more successful than 99% of people?"
Thank you, Mark. After watching this videos, I don't want to be more successful than 99%
I only want to improve myself better, and be more successful than myself yesterday, and today.
Ironically, focusing on yourself that way(minus the narcissism, of course) and not thinking about those 99% paradoxically makes you *MORE* successful than 99% of the people
@@Gun_Metal_Grey weird but true especially how many people push the idea or want to be "different" or ahead of 99% of the people for me even tho im not the most ambition filled guy i really never and probably will never care to be better or ahead of 99% of the people coz i rly dont care bout it and just wanna take and experience life and do what i feel happy and satisfied to do rather than just being very different or ahead that too how many people think they are different than most of them or ahead of them by knowing something or thinking something whilst many people would be that i understand the feeling of u knowing something or feel like you think or do things in a way where many dont but realistcally its just not the common one but as mark said just above average rather than revolutionary of very different
as it should be.
Same here. Making more and more money each year is not what I value. I value being a better person, being a better person to those around be, a better person to loved ones, and being more happy as "being successful"

One thing to remember: Money. A lot of the so-called "geniuses" we worship today were born into wealth, and to a degree, were able to fail upwards. Also, a lot of people in history who we know today, truly lived as mavericks and went against the flow, and were deeply insightful and/or talented. But they died "failures" because the rest of society weren't ready to embrace those ideas at the time.

Understanding personal finances and investing will most likely lead to greater financial independence. By being knowledgeable about money and investing, individuals can make informed decisions about how to save, spend, and invest their money. A trader made over $350k in this recession influenced market
Stocks are pretty unstable at the moment, but if you do the right math, you should be just fine. Bloomberg and other finance media have been recording cases of folks gaining over 250k just in a matter of weeks/couple months, so I think there are alot of wealth transfer in this downtime if you know where to look.
The best course of action if you lack market knowledge is to ask a consultant or investing coach for guidance or assistance. Speaking with a consultant helped me stay afloat in the market and grow my portfolio to about 65% since January, even though I know it sounds obvious or generic. I believe that is the most effective way to enter the business at the moment.

Love this - your Dad is absolutely correct. I'm working on a career in music and anytime I mention marketing, artists give me a dirty look. I'd go so far as to say that the music actually doesn't matter that much. I mean within reason. Maybe that's my contrarian idea. There's so much good music out there that nobody's heard of or will ever hear. So yes, you need a good song but more importantly you need people to hear it if you want to be a successful artist - and that takes some serious hard work.

The challenge and the effort is more important than the outcome (success or failure). Put another way, it’s the journey not the destination, you need to focus on. The process is the primary purpose. And that will include pain, suffering and sacrifice.
How do you get something you can personally have that confidence in when you can't trust your own abilities because you ARE full of questioning and you can see how that many people have good ideas, too while also not having a problem calling them out on incorrect ones?
I got ahead of 99.9% of people by being willing to be born to parents who are in the top 0.1%, and spared no expense on me while growing up and on my trust fund and nepotism. Like the man says, you have to be willing to do what other people aren't to get ahead.

This is actually really one of the best videos about "success".
You got a great presentation of information.
Best freaking video out there on “success” hands down!! Huge fan of this message!!
Lessons:
1. Be willing to do what most people are not: To get ahead of 99% of people, you need to be willing to do something that 99% of people are not willing to do. This means going against the norm and being a contrarian.
2. Have a contrarian idea: Most people go with the flow and agree with popular opinions. To achieve extreme success, you need to have a contrarian idea, something that challenges widely-held assumptions and beliefs.
3. Be correct about your idea: It's not enough to have a contrarian idea; you need to be correct about it. Most contrarian ideas will be wrong, so being right is a difficult but crucial aspect of achieving success.
4. Execute massively: Execution is important, but it is not the sole determinant of success. While it is necessary to put in the work, execution alone is not sufficient. It's the combination of having a correct contrarian idea and executing on it that leads to extreme success.
4. Question widely-held assumptions: Success often comes from questioning widely-accepted beliefs and exploring alternative opportunities that others might overlook. It requires adopting unpopular beliefs and sticking to them even in the face of criticism.
5. Focus on impactful decisions: Extreme success is not the result of numerous small actions or productivity hacks. It often boils down to a few key decisions or ideas that have a significant impact. Identifying and executing on these impactful decisions is crucial.
6. Downsides of extreme success: The downsides of achieving extreme success. Being a contrarian can lead to isolation and disapproval from others. It challenges the notion that extreme success brings validation and approval, as it often invites criticism and skepticism.

At 42, I've come to realize that money is a tool. I’ve worked so hard over the years to realize that if you don’t make money work for you, you can’t experience true freedom. I’m glad I found that out although it was later in life, but that marked the turning point in my finances.
I'm in my late 30’s. Once I get paid, I begin to spend on irrelevant things. I work hard for my money, so I believe I can spend it on what I like. The older I get, the more my perspective shifts. I want to take my finances into consideration and put myself in order before it's too late. How are you doing it, ma’am?
Herman Jonas is the brain behind my success. I've gotten into a plethora of assets with $14k spread across stocks (options and futures) for the short term and Roth IRA, index funds, and ETFs, for the long term. Now I sit back, and just reinvest at intervals while I handle my other businesses.
Do not forget that when it comes to the stock market, prices can be erratic, rising and declining quickly, often in relation to companies' policies, which individual investors do not influence.

I agree that the market can be quite unpredictable, but working with Herman has been a game-changer for me. His market insights and strategies are consistently spot-on. It’s not just about profits; it’s also about the peace of mind that comes from knowing you’re in capable hands.
How can I reach him, please? I'm buoyed by the good recommendations I’ve come across elsewhere. I need help with investing. I'm ready to pay for his services.

So far the best "motivational" type of video! It's just true and really pure gold. It feels like all of these "morning routines" and "gym at 5 am" are coming from not having an understanding of how to deal with their life, so we try to show how successful we are, covering under those things. Don't get me wrong, I 100% realize that these are important. Sport, therapy, healthy eating - it does the best for our stability and inner health. But they should be things that support us and not the main point of focus
Well put....totally agree...but feel awesome when I do an extended stint of early morning routines. But you sometimes need to stare at the ceiling in the morning and just let the focus come to you
I understand and deal with my life quite well actually.
It feels good to feel good. If other people like physically and mentally feeling like shit then go ahead and be my guest. Lol nobody cares.
Take care of your body and your body will take care of you. The amount of energy I have is unrealistic compared to 99% of Americans or the 60% that is obese. I'll do circles around people for days mentally and physically.
And I'm not sure how many people you know, but the majority of fitness folks that I know are legitimately successful. It's not some fake mask they put on. They legitimately have the discipline to carry out and execute tasks and goals. The thing a lot of people don't understand is that exercise can teach you a lot more about life than just being healthy and "looking good" but only the people who do it all the time would understand what I'm talking about.
that last point you made was so important to me, thank you

The hardest part about achieving extreme success isn't the work, anyone can put in the work. It's being a correct contrarian. It's the willingness to question widely-held assumptions.
It's the ability to look at alternatives or opportunities that most people can't be bothered with.
It's the ability to adopt unpopular beliefs and then stick to them when people start making fun of you.
It’s also the willingness to be wrong

5:15 - Kobe Bryant ate unhealthy food.
6:10 - At some point in the past airplanes, light bulbs, and computers were some people’s contrarian ideas.
9:00 - The downside of success: no one likes contrarians.
9:56 - Success is only meaningful if your contrarian idea is meaningful.
10:02 - Success only improves relationships that don't need to be improved.
10:19 - To be correctly contrarian, you have to be incorrectly contrarian a lot.
10:50 - Extreme success is not going to make you happy.
11:30 - You should ask yourself why you want to be more successful than 99% of people.
Interesting take on success - or should I say "contrarian" take on success. Thanks, Mark! Sounds reasonable and logical, but I do wish we had some data/evidence beyond just Mark's personal anecdote and the few examples provided (Steve Job, Warren Buffett, etc.).

I rarely find CZcams videos that provide new and useful information these days but man oh man, you have no idea how badly I needed to hear this.
Hands down the best success video on CZcams, thanks man
Finally video with new ideas
these days videos like this are so rare
Thanks a lot and keep up 👏👏
everytime i watch your videos, or read your newsletters, i get reminded why you're my favorite author and how much i love the idea of being 'real' rather than being just 'optimistic'.
You are hands down my favorite person to watch in the "self-help" sphere. I don't want to call it self-help and put you down into this box because you are not, however I'm saying that in a lack of better term. Your insights are always sincere and different from what we constantly hear here on CZcams. The content of 90% of these people boils down to paraphrasing what's already there, while you differ from that a lot and I'd like to thank you in the behalf of everyone that you've helped already.
Probably the single greatest, most helpful 12min of this decade for me
I loved the concepts that you mentioned in this video, especially the shocking truths that some of the great successful people in the world had really bad habits.
Thank you very much for sharing these interesting findings with us.
😍 🥇
OMG, Mark, this is hands down THE BEST success video I have watched in ages! Not to mention all the honesty and the humour - THANKS! 🧡
6:25 Oh! This is the “Subtle Art of Not Giving a F” guy?!?! That’s why I liked his videos!
honestly... among the thousands of thousands videos ive watched, this is my 2nd favourite. the first one being the egg. it gets straight to the point and quite literally fvcked with every single thing i believed in in a good way. and the best thing is that i didnt know he was the author of that book. i wanted to read it sooo much but i just couldnt get my hands on a physical copy
Awesome video and agree on most point. The only thing I would add, is that luck is also a key contributor. Luck in who raised you, mentors you had access to early in life, right place at the right time, etc.
Hey Mark, we need more frequent videos like this from you! They are extremely informative, logical, and to the point, such an an eye opener. Keep them coming!
I honestly don't understand why people comment like this, "we need more frequent videos....blah blah blah" It's his channel and if he feels like posting a video he will.
@@AdlBnymn calm down and respect his opinion and comment, sir.
@@serumser1 Again, people tend to misunderstand text messages, just because I have used neutral tone and purposedly mocked his comment doesn't mean I ain't calm lol.
And since I didn't like his comment/opinion I pointed out that, then why tf should I respect that mate? It is my opinion and I stick to it.
what you need is to unfollow other people but instead you follow them, this is what he's also teaching in its core, oh boi
@@AdlBnymn why are arguing back even if he misses the point? Just ignore it bro
Mark, this is imo probably your best video yet. Even as somebody with a background in philosophy and psychology who’s willing to dig into such material, I appreciate your ability to distill difficult ideas into something entertaining and more easily consumable for those that are less inclined to dig in. Importantly, your analysis and ability come to well-rounded conclusions that are of actual insight (unlike the vast majority of “information” found in any medium) is commendable. This particular video is certainly not among your most philosophically or psychologically dense, but I think you nailed it and I appreciated how you didn’t shy away from the question of whether or not it might actually be worth finding THAT level of success. It’s worth pondering, to be sure.
@Mark Manson Shut up imposter
😂
Success isn't what others see in you, but what you see in yourself.
That was some magic humor - the way through - thanks for making light of what is sometimes a difficult conversation.
Hilarius video with great advise! I'm been struggling with this topic lately and needed to hear this. Thank you Mark!
Thank you!
I needed to hear this. This made me realize how much of my nature was about searching for contrarian ideas and how much the process of looking for these was actually meaningfull to me.
I enjoyed it so much by watching your videos. And it was valuable and unique enough for me to stick with the video till the end.❤
Manson you literally the only development contents creator, with whom my inner self is totally d'accord with
I appreciate the info you provide and I agree with you 100 percent on this. Success to me is more internal and personal.
Mark Manson is the most amazing teacher you could have about any topic. It's fun, it's engaging, his ideas are meant to make you think, not just wait for someone to fix your damn problems, but mainly to look inward. You are one of the most impactful people in my life and I truly appreciate your work. Love you bro! Love the drug bits as well! :D
It's my first time listening to him and I do feel something different about him already
This video really felt like a deep cleanser for all those videos about execution and monk mode. It’s so refreshing to listen to this new type of advice.
I would recommend working out, meditating and all of that for a dopamine detox and that’s it, not as the main focus of your success. I can’t believe how obvious this was and we didn’t even know. Like ofc! Only meditating and going for walks won’t make you the next Steve Jobs!
Mate- that was a solid video!!!
You actually edit really well mark!
I definately think it’s easy to be in the 99% but you’re right sometimes you have to be brave!
Thank you for this video Mark 😂 made my day.
Thank you for helping us ask better questions. Your books made a huge impact in how I view the world and how I question my views of it.
Thank you 🙏
Perhaps, one of the best videos on success I have ever watched ... truly contrarian to the demotivating 1-2-3 checklists, blueprint-type advice on success!
Thanks Mark! Especially for the "success amplify who you are part.
For quite a long time I've been going throughout "self improvement". Imade tidy schedule, did those good habits & other stuff, yet I didn't really feel like becoming a much greater person. Watching this, I realized the reason I didnt feel that way is my identity. I subconsciously brand myself as "someone who need self improvement". Turns out what I need is to execute massively my what I want to do, even if I am not regulated to "strict & tidy 24/7 daily habits"
100%. I totally agree. This has some insane value to it and opened up my eyes wider. I did actually just make a video very similar to this, I think you’d enjoy it just as much as this one and take some value from it. I’d really appreciate the extra viewer 🙏💪
"Extreme success only improves the relationships that didn't need to be improved in the first place." damn that's powerful
I love ur no bs approach. Definitely more than engaging than most people talking about success today. 🙏
Imo tenacity & creativity are all powerful. Any really successful person i have known had this drive and urgency about them that was awe inspiring.
You literally just changed my mindset. And you did so many many things to prove your point. Thannkyou ❤
I'm very relieved to see that your desk looks like mine, cause people been telling me that mixing cocaine, red bull, booze and fast food while doing my school assignments isn't healthy...
Mark, I think it's also important to note that the reason you were confident in your contrarian idea was because you'd regularly put in the work (in the form of blogs). This emphasizes that contrarian ideas come from experience and not out of the blue.
That is a very good point. Even though his idea was contrarian at that time, he had to put in a good amount of work to realize that it had the potential.
For us now, I don't really know what we can do. I am probably only thinking for myself as I do not know but I guess i will keep on going forward.
@@sweettooph2221 For what we can do - there are some good ideas out there. Check out David Epstein's Range. His thesis is to get broad general exploratory learning about various subjects and then settle on one or two subjects to specialize in.
lets dont skip the part where you can afford to stay home all day and wake up at 11am for months right?
this video is incredible. loved the tone. loved the content.
Mark, could you do a video on how to balance life? I don't wanna spend the rest of my days working 48 hrs a week and feeling like life passes me by, man.
Get a remote job. I make decent coin and do whatever I want in the daytime, where I want as long as I get my job done
Great advice Mark. Just wanted to say I'm fascinated that you seem to talk exactly as you write. Like word for word. It's quite unusual for most writers
Mark Manson is a legendary contrarian explaining how correct and meaningful contrarianism brings success in a meaningful contrarian video. Thanks Mark!
Been doing it for more than a year and will keep going every day.
wow! I learnt a lot from this video and I also realized that being ahead of 99% people is not my ultimate goal. My ultimate goal is to be a better version of myself. I feel great seeing myself improve and improving is my ultimate goal. Thanks mark! realized this just now.
100%. I totally agree. This has some insane value to it and opened up my eyes wider. I did actually just make a video very similar to this, I think you’d enjoy it just as much as this one and take some value from it. I’d really appreciate the extra viewer 🙏💪
Some great insights here about what is success. The take-home message for me, is to really get to the motive - WHY is it important for me (or for anyone, for that matter) to succeed?
Thanks for the video!
I am a fan. Your videos are hilarious and keep me engaged. I appreciate your work.
Love your style. And it's true, really good points. Brilliant.
This video MUST be shared and played in every university, every networking event, every business / life coaching session, and in every mindfullness meditation. It's pure gold. It made me go waaaaay back in time and realize how I got to where I am today. I appreciate your generosity Mark. Believe you me, not everyone's going to grasp the message within, because most ppl have to walk the path before knowing it, but it makes complete sense. Greetings from Mexico.
@krazy8 u will be more successful than 99% of people soon

He’s being sarcastic right?
😆😆 Yeah, thanks for taking the time to leave your deeply insightful comments and then give each other high-fives, like a group of sigma men sitting in a bar after going through your 9-5 job, b*tching about everything, and then someone at the table (🙋 me, in case you need an explanation) breaks the mood and says something contrarian and you all go: "he can't be serious", "he's being sarcastic, right?", "It's a joke, right?" and so on. LIKE I SAID, it's not for everybody. 😆👍 Chill out and keep at it. Hence the proportion is 99-1. You've been made.
but they wont they need to keep selling you the american dream to fuel modern day slavery bro plus the people working in these schools tend to not be these business contrarians.
I really appreciate you actually telling the truth and not treating me like an idiot haha, your video has inspired me to actually improve my life the only way i know how and educate me like a college professor would. Solid work!
Your book is the most impactful I've read. I'll read it again

Unless you open CZcams every 52 seconds 😢😂
got brilliant insight from this video, will surely introspect upon these!
This could be one of the most important videos anyone could ever watch. Going through Subtle Art of Not Giving a F@ck for the 2nd time and I believe it’s actually saving my life.
This feels very validating. I live a stable & normal life, despite coming from a poor & volatile household. I think it is because I dared to pursue what I wanted despite being judged and ridiculed.
I had to choose between making them upset, and becoming them.

Just what i needed at this time(currently building something people think will fail), thanks mate.
I just love Mark's energy to boost my Monday morning. :)
I recently inherited almost $500k. I REALLY need to make this money work for me, and not just disappear over time. I've been scrambling for somewhere to put the money, where I can make an effort to use the gains to pay bills so I can quit my job . All roads have pointed to the financial market of some sort which is a good idea buh where else should I put money besides the financial market? We have a 13% RPI rate so cash is tough.
@Trevor Ogden I completely agree; I'm 60 and recently retired with roughly 1.2 million in outside retirement funds, no debt, and very few dollars in retirement funds compared to my portfolio balance over the last three years. To be honest, the role of the invt-advisor can only be ignored, not denied. So do your homework to choose a reliable one.
