  • I'm going to show you how to get out of a rut… and you’re going to f*cking like it.
    Every problem of inaction comes down to a problem with emotions. Your procrastination actually comes from you not feeling like doing something, it has nothing to do with Mercury retrograde or your under-diagnosed ADHD.
    Want to get a better handle on your emotions, and channel them more productively in your life? Fuck yeah, you do. I have an entire course on this stuff. It’s called Emotional Mastery, you can check it out here: mrk.mn/48oFAHR

    The social pressure thing really doesn't work for me. In fact it kind of does the opposite. If I don't keep up with what I said and someone calls me out on it, it tends to make me just give up entirely. I found that it's better to tell no one and feel no pressure. Then just do it, and it feels nice when people comment about your success later.

      I think that has to do with the dysfunctional beliefs that failure is bad, and the overpowering shame that comes with it. If you can get someone who isn't going to think less of you for failing, but will stay by ur side and help you get back up again, and you can learn that take on that same mindset, I think their form of social pressure is very healthy. Unfortunately, it's rare to find someone such as that on your life.

    Procrastination is quite simple. It involves tweaking your surroundings, a system of rewards and punishments that makes bad decisions challenging and good decision fun, breaking down big tasks into smaller, manageable steps, and, lastly:
    JUST. DOING. IT!
    ((Also, not being smart 🤣🤣))

    Great video! Not sure about the incentive take tho. I recall that Huberman says that you should avoid getting used to incentives every time you accomplish something. You can utilize the flipping coin method. If you win you get an incentive, if you lose you don't. The point is that internal motivation is the strongest drive for our actions, the best results come from enjoying the process of what you are doing. If you get used to get a reward you will be less motivated because you're doing that for external reasons. (I hope my english was understandable enoungh 😅)

    02:24 🏆 Create incentives for yourself by setting up rewards and punishments for your behaviors to enhance motivation.
    05:48 📝 Embrace the "Do Something" principle: take small, simple actions today to move towards your goal, as action is the cause, not the result, of motivation.
    08:14 👥 Leverage social pressure positively to achieve goals, recognizing its power in motivating and influencing action.
    10:40 🔄 Embrace failure as a tool for learning and progress; the point of goals is not just achieving them but the continuous process of taking action.

    People with ADHD are prone to struggle with procrastination *because* it is, absolutely, a feelings thing.
    It is thought that their brains find it harder to work past and with the *feeling* of "not wanting to do it" because of the way they are wired.
    They find it more challenging to force themselves to focus on things that are not, in the moment, the most stimulating option ("I'm bored" or "this isn't urgent enough right now") Specifically it's the way ADHD impacts emotional regulation (and the dysregulation of the brain's dopamine reward/motivation system).
    A lot of the advice is universal, but it can be challenging! And people with brains that are far enough over on the spectrum to hit the 'clinical diagnosis' threshold will probably wrestle more with it, even as the same tips and principles to combat procrastination apply.
    (I do not have time to watch the vid right now; apologies if this is already covered).

      It's so much worse than that. Because our dopamine systems don't work correctly, there is no satisfaction in a job well done. There is no reward, ever.
      I don't feel pride when I complete a project, even if it's something I'm really into, I'm just glad it's finally over.

      The only real thing covered was perhaps environmental adjustments that make things easier for the target.
      Not an example used in the video but a goal to keep dirty clothes off the bedroom floor can be managed by changing your environment to have the dirty clothes hamper in the bedroom or bathroom rather than the laundry.
      Still no happy brain chemical rewards as such but less obstacles in the home.

    When I was 15, I only had one goal. To secure a hundred percent in my final exams.
    Yep, it was so silly and childish as anything, but that's something that had me all excited at that age. And I also had a good plan that had worked for many toppers before that. And I remember that was probably one of the most productive years of my life. I had a goal, and a reliable plan that could almost guarantee success.
    (Bad that the exams got cancelled due to covid later lmao.)
    After that, I lost the hold of everything because I had goals but no ways to achieve them. Like there was no one to tell me, do this and you'll achieve it. And in fact whoever did achieve those goals before me that I had aimed for, had started much earlier. So, that brought a sense of being too late in my mind. Demotivating af.
    Lost all my time procrastinating to think about it and plan everything for myself.
    I still don't have a lot of clarity about how can I achieve all that I want. And I keep procrastinating figuring out a way to it. Hope I do figure it out soon. 🙂

      @M_SC Před 4 měsíci +1

      2 ways:
      1)do research specifically into how to accomplish each goal. Of course you’ve tried already. Do more. Do something different.
      2)do anything. See if it brought you closer or farther away, and proceed accordingly. Remember the children’s party game where the one kid looks for the hidden keys while the others yell “hot, cold”. The only way to fail this game is to stand still

      @b-6870 Před 4 měsíci

      @@M_SCYep. I tried the first point already, in fact since the past 3 years, I've been in that loop. I tried searching for one clear way, like a clear path to everything that I wanna achieve. But the conclusion, that I know I realised way too late because of procrastinating all the time was only that there's no specific guaranteed way. It's like a lot of luck is involved there and doesn't matter how hard I or anyone tries, no one can figure out a plan that can guarantee success.
      And that only made me realise that real life is so different from schools and exams. There's no time table that can guarantee success. Real life is in fact like a chess game, where I can't plan all the moves in the beginning of the game, there's a lot that I will have to figure out as I keep playing. That requires me to be mentally alert and use my analysation skills everytime like we do before a nee move.
      It's the only way and there's no magical plan that I can blindly follow like a bunch of books for school exams.
      Tough realisation, but that's a fact and I have to accept it.

      Lmao, that's similar to my story. The difference between us is that covid postponed our exams and I did really well, topper of 7 districts in my state. But the aftermath is not so good. I procrastinated a lot, don't have any kind of goal, got some personal issues and now I feel like shit.😊

It would be great if you'd just speak. No editing/production necessary. Pressing record on your camera is enough. Nothing else needed. Thanks!
