We live in a world that is designed to stimulate our emotions. Every advertisement, food product and social media post is geared to give us a short rush of pleasure which is followed by an emptiness and a craving for more. Big companies are able to leverage our cravings and make trillions of dollars off of keeping us addicted. If you don’t have a plan for yourself, you will be at the mercy of companies who will play on your impulses to control you like a puppet. You will sacrifice your free will, searching for happiness in a maze that’s designed to keep you lost. Studies show that on average, people use their smartphones for about 3 hours per day [1,2]. That’s 1,095 hours every year. Thankfully there is a way to regain control over your impulses and take your power back through a practice called dopamine fasting.
Dopamine fasting is the idea that if you avoid dopamine stimulating activities for extended periods of time, you will be able to ‘reset your brain’ and let go of addictive behaviors that negatively impact your life. It’s commonly misunderstood as reducing dopamine, but that’s not true. Dopamine is necessary to function as a healthy human being.
Dopamine Fasting exploded in interest in October 2018 and gained even more interest a year later after Dr. Cameron Sepah published an article on Medium titled ‘The Definitive Guide to Dopamine Fasting 2.0: The Hot Silicon Valley Trend.
Dopamine fasting 2.0 is better defined. It’s based on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. It’s about reducing impulsive behavior, not reducing dopamine itself. And it doesn’t encourage you to act like a full-blown monk who abstains from all forms of pleasure.

Thank you for having me After Skool! I've been telling all my friends how excited I've been about this collaboration. I can't think of a channel that's closer in alignment with our values so I'm stoked to be part of this. Hi Brandon ! I shall look forward to the coming up After school lessons. Thanks for telling about Your plans. This subject is as I see it extraordinarily important to our species these times being so egoically clever still warfaring and destroying animal habitats, climate and our posibility of staying as a species here on earth within maybe one or two generations from now. The fact that the Permafrost deep down in the sibirian ground is melting is enough to realise that we have to act not omly as greedy egos(consumerists), but as family to all nature beings in order to understand how important the ecosystems around the planet realy are and always have been to all life( incl humans). In the western hemisphere the balance between the ego and consciousness have bee swolloved up by our greedeness for several hundred years. So as with budism, echkart tolle and einzelgænger, I welcome Your initiative. Also people find out that all religions are the same in their essence. And one do not need to confide in any religion at tall if You practise consciosness and respect people for what they are - knowing that we all have the same self behind our masks. A lot of times, at least with me, in a moment of silence or boredom we turn to our phones instead of finding a new activity to spark engagement. It’s also good to surround yourself with people who are actually interesting & on the same intellectual level & wavelength as you cause then there will always be something new to discuss & new ideas to discover.

I have ADHD and these habits are particularly difficult to break. I get addicted to things easily and my brain is constantly on a dopamine hunt. I use my phone for so many hours in the day, and it’s shocking that the numbers get there, because I work full time and I also have a toddler. I’m trying to be more mindful because I realise how damaging that can be.
If I put my phone down, I’ll end up getting an unhealthy snack, or a cup of coffee, or a beer, or something else that is stimulating in the moment.
I feel like when it comes to dopamine, I’m constantly consuming but never full. Due to current insurance issues, I am unmedicated so that makes a big difference too.
I definitely could benefit from doing this but this would be an almighty challenge. But worth it, to be a healthier, happier person, and a better parent to my child.

ADHD medication blocks the reuptake of dopamine, so when dopamine is released it remains longer in the synapses. Sorry to hear you can’t get treatment. I would instead suggest taking a probiotic called L. Plantarum. Worth having a google, it has been shown to significantly increase dopamine production in animal models in multiple studies. Ive been actively taking down my addictions one by one over the years. First with coffee that one was pretty easy. Havnt touched coffee for about 9 years. The next one was cigarettes. Then Marijuana now I am actively trying to get myself into a reward system for alcohol. Used to be a borderline alcoholic and have gotten myself into a routine to only have some drinks on a Friday night. Next I want to punch out my addiction to sugar ive been slowly rewarding myself with fruit juices instead of pops with refined sugar. If anyone's reading this you can 100% beat your addictions using this method it just takes a little will power. Mind over matter

  • @DanDascalescu-dandv
    @DanDascalescu-dandv Před 3 lety +640

    2-minute summary:
    - dopamine fasting means applying stimulus control to reduce addictive behaviors; doesn't reduce dopamine; based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
    - solutions include removing the stimulus (e.g. disabling notifications), engaging in behaviors incompatible with the stimulus (e.g. swimming vs. phone use), or Exposure Response Prevention (ERP)
    - ERP: you can expose yourself to the stimulus (e.g. porn), but "urge surf" by not masturbating; be mindful, describe what the sensations feel like, then when you're done, set intentions for the rest of the day
    - dopamine fasting increases the number of dopamine receptors by reducing stimulus exposure frequency. "If you don't eat processed sugar for a month, a single blueberry can give you the same amount of pleasure as your favorite ice cream".
    How to dopamine fast:
    1. Identify the impulsive behavior you want to reduce. Common ones: emotional eating, Internet & gaming, gambling & shopping, thrill & novelty seeking, porn, recreational drugs
    2. Follow a dopamine fasting schedule. E.g. no phone use 1-4h one day a week, one day per quarter, and one week per year.
    Routine & Reward Replacement example:
    1. Identify the behavior, e.g. going to the cafeteria to drink Coke every day
    2. Identify the reward you're craving. Common ones: thirst, craving a sugar high, craving a break, needing social interaction. Experiment with replacing the reward, e.g. drink water instead, eat a fruit, take a walk, call a friend. See which one makes the initial craving subside. Log the results and look for patterns over a few weeks.
    3. Identify the trigger for the craving. Common ones: times of day, location, seeing others perform the activity, an emotional state, immediately preceding action.
    4. Make a plan. E.g. if it's the time of day, when "Coke time" comes around, walk to a juice bar.

@@fredycastaneda5955I know that what you believe is untrue” most often represents a disagreement created by beliefs and pseudo-knowledge, not a statement of truth. How can you tell which is which? Here is how most people tell. If someone else is saying those words (“I know that what you believe is untrue”) to us, they obviously are suffering from delusionary pseudo-knowledge. On the other hand, if we are saying those words to someone else, it is again they who are obviously confusing pseudo-knowledge with knowledge. This is an easy rule to remember: If others agree with you, they possess real knowledge but if they disagree with you, they are afflicted with delusion and pseudo-knowledge.
If you want to stay in the mainstream and play it safe in the center of the well-beaten path, applying the above rule is the standard technique for discriminating real knowledge from pseudo-knowledge. What rule could be more simple or satisfying to apply? Other people are always the idiots!
The fact is, disagreement on Big Picture concepts is most often the result of a conflict of beliefs regardless of who is talking, pretending to listen, agreeing, or disagreeing. If you are to avoid jumping to conclusions in the absence of knowledge, you must maintain the state of open-minded skepticism - there is no other reasonable or logical alternative. Anything else is a trap.
By now, you may be wondering if there is such a thing as good belief. I can best answer that question with another question. Is there such a thing as good ignorance - is there any situation where ignorance is better, more valuable, than knowledge? If there is, then wherever and whenever ignorance is best, that is where you will find a good belief. In the short-term and in the little picture you might find some advantages to ignorance in a few special cases. Ignorance is perhaps not so bad if the problem is of little significance and of minimal importance, or one you can do nothing about. If you are trying to trick, use, or manipulate others to your advantage, their ignorance is always very helpful.
In the long run and in the Big Picture, if you are not trying to manipulate others and your ego is small, ignorance has little to no value. If the issues are significant, the stakes high, or the outcome important to you, then ignorance and belief will leave you vulnerable and looking like an ostrich with its head in the sand. In substantive matters of long-term significance, there is no good belief.

I have allowed myself to come search for a specific topic and watch a video on it and then leave YT, which has been great. Realizing that the endless feeds on YT, FB and IG are really the mechanisms that keep us on them forever is a big key to a healthy interaction with them.
I really don't miss FB as much as I expectef, which is really fascinating.

    Thank you "After Skool".
What you've explained has tied up everything about our consumption, for me.
What's happening to us is our constant chase for the new or next "high". I've read and heard about this loop we put ourselves through chasing the next high, from other authors, speakers, and professionals. James Jani talks about in his video "The Toxic World of Self Help". Robert Kiyosaki talks about it in his book "Rich Dad Poor Dad. Robert calls the dopamine urge" fear and desire". The less forgiving term for desire is greed. This sounds like the fundamental or basic principle behind the control of society. We chase the next new gadget, and feel a rush when we eventually get it. We get a similar or the exact state of rush when we get the next paycheck, clothing, shoes, certificate of achievement, hairdo...
These things act as a drug. The simple act of, for example shopping, ends up not being about getting the things you need to live. Shopping ends up becoming about getting that high when you swipe your card.
This is why advertising is not about describing what the actual product does. Advertising became more about inflating the feeling of want for the new best mattress, TV, security surveillance, bread, whatever is being sold.
Your video proves that as soon as you become content, you give advertisors very little to work. But as soon as you naturally choose to improve something in your life that might genuinely need improvement, you immediately become vulnerable and susceptible to falling for the traps that lie and wait.

I also started meditating 5 minutes a day early in the morning to start the day off with some awareness. I installed a time tracking app that sets reminders (Smarter Time is what I used).
