Saftey is always a trade for fredom, but we should not be afraid of safety. Safety over fredom can be necessary. We should ask where and in what amount it is really necessary. Let's take the history of hunting in our country. Wild animals belong to the state, but the right to use this resource was given to the ground owners until around 1910. At this point, we had no longer any native population of big game apart from some leftovers of a species that lives in the mountains. We had to switch the system. This, of course mean that ground owners would lose their fredom to hunt. We now again have a high population of those animals, but i took a lot of effort in some cases. We traded the fredom to hunt for game population security because the fredom to nunt meant that there was nothing left to hunt. We see that sometimes a trade of fredom for safety is a necessity. But we can look at this situation and make an example of excessive safety. Many "animal lovers" call for hunting to be outlawed entirely. They, of course, say its for the good of the animals and the safety of the ecosystem. What they dont understand is that hunting is a necessity to keep the ecosystem healthy.

Unfortunately this all is predicated on the assumption that we are capable of choice and are not in fact biological machines devoid of free will and real choice. I want so much to believe in free will and free choice, but those concepts may all be just illusions created by our consciousness in order to keep us motivated to procreate. Many neuroscientists are very skeptical of, or completely disregard the existence of free will at this point, I hope they are wrong but I am incapable of proving the existence of free will with provable evidence.

Reason and logic can't be used to sort out ethics... That is something else. They say laws are downstream from ethics, what are ethics downstream of? Most likely ethics are downstream of what is "good" or "bad" for reproduction, evolution has been at that for a long time now... Imagine that reality is freedom of choice, and our choices go way beyond what we can reason.
