As a 16 year old girl whos recently deleted social media (not for the first time, i used to keep going back lmfao), ive noticed a huge difference in a matter of days. ive spent so much time reading, listening to audiobooks, writing, going for walks, colouring, even just finding the weirdest ways to keep myself entertained, and just hobbies in general that i completely abandoned to use my phone, or spend time on unnecessary socials, and its been so beyong refreshing. I feel like we all forget how to live normally until we truly delete everything. I'm literally limiting myself to an hour of youtube a day (on my laptop or tv only, i dont have it on my phone) and 15 minutes of time on messages, so i can interact with friends, etc, but I still go to school, so i see everyone everyday, to further this progress ive already made, and see good results. I just wish more teens saw how your teenage years are literally the perfect time to stop using these apps that are literally ruining their mental health. @@zakosist Great retort and a solid argument. However, even with people that have a documented diagnosis of mental illness, they still have to decide for themselves that they’re going to go to therapy (or that they’re actually gonna put in effort to change when they do go) or take their medication, change their habits/environments, friend groups. It always starts with a mental decision, no matter who you are. Thoughts are supreme, and changing your environment, friend group, or any other aspect of life starts with a thought.

Excessive mobile phone use makes our bodies create so much dopamine. As a result we have not much left. We may feel tired, distracted, unmotivated, disconnected, anxious and even in the long run: depressed.
Other activities also work in a similar way: eating comfort food, sugary snacks, alcohol, pornography, gambling, drugs, etc.
If we want to go even deeper we can start asking ourselves: "What is it that I am trying to distract myself from ?" That can be many things happening on a subconscious level: painful feelings of let's say not feeling connected to your parents, friends and yourself. And many other unmet needs.
You can't go far without self-awareness.

It's social media, that really is the "trap", imo. I'm already 29 and not as heavily affected by it's downsides as younger people, but I noticed that scrolling Instagram for too long, especially other's pages and pictures, tends to make me frustrated. All this comparison that comes with it is unhealthy and often devastating.
It seems to me that people are living in their own bubbles more than ever before, staring at the screens, lost in whatever they're consuming. There's much less interpersonal contact, verbal or nonverbal.
But there surely is a tendency to go "back to the roots", phones aside.

I don't know why I clicked on this vid but I had to pause when the sound of the mourning dove was mentioned. One of my oldest memories was when I was sleeping over at my grandfather's house with my sister, every morning we would hear multiple mourning doves. We weren't allowed to go downstairs before a certain time and we couldn't be loud, so we would whisper as the early sun would peek through the blinds and we'd just mimic the doves and whisper about how many chestnuts we'd go find on the field today. I'm a millennial but that sound of the doves brings me back to that specific morning or weekend. The childish anticipation of the day to come and what thoughts were in our minds then. I didn't even need to finish the video to know what would follow. Needless to say, I do still hear the mourning doves, but during my busiest years, I'm sure I haven't heard a single one.

I’ve been unplugging a little this week, I drove out of cell range and sat in the mountain forest with a little rain, umbrella, and a notepad. I just sat there, attempted to meditate (I don’t know what I’m doing), may have failed that in a way but, I just took a few pictures with my phone and otherwise left it in my pocket. I lost track of time, I let my mind process myself, and the beauty around me. It didn’t give me answers to big things, but it let me get closer. I have been avoiding my phone when I wake up now as well, and try to spend some of the morning totally away from social media and CZcams, even music.
It’s hard to fight the urge to play something, but it’s also great at the same time.
Immerse yourself in the world around you, let your brain catch up on thoughts, and listen to your inner self, feelings, and process it.
Understand yourself, let the magic of thought come back, and let boredom fuel you to do what you actually want, it could be a project or hobby, something new, just let your brain wander and guide you to start something.
This will bring a level of harmony to your life, be intune with yourself, and you can then be true to yourself. Let external voices and ideas slide off, who cares what they think and want you to be. Be yourself, take control of your mind, and be who you want to be.

Recently I was thinking that our constant screen time keeps us occupied and delivers dopamine of novelty, but it robs us of presence itself. And presence is this ingredient that we had as children. Everything was interesting, I used to pay attention to smallest details, colors and lights, texture, shapes and sounds. I am trying to go back to this kind childish kind of awareness and limit the screen time a bit. It is hard however, as social media brings such instant relief from boredom and has become this automatic thing we do without thinkingz

I had more hobbies, used my imagination, and boredom made way to ideas and goals. I noticed a lot more things and was always present in the moment. Now, it’s very hard to stay away from social media because that’s how the world works and communicates now, but the times I’ve been able stay away for a while have been a breath if fresh air and resembled simpler times when phones weren’t required to have fun.

My husband and got into bird watching recently and so when we go on walks we really take in the environment and appreciate the nature and birds around us. One day my husband was leaving a soccer game and looked at a bird that he had never seen before and he was trying to figure out what kind of bird it was. Some kids that saw him stop and stare at the bird were making fun of him and said something like “ this guy has never seen a bird before”. I think what the kid who said this didn’t realize is that we often see birds but we don’t really SEE them. We think we do, but we don’t. Have you noticed their colors and the sounds they make ? What kind of bird it was and the way that they fly? People see wonderful things around them everyday but fail to really SEE them because they are more preoccupied with their our thoughts or mindless things like scrolling on a phone. The mourning dove is a super common bird and I hear its sound very often because every time Im outside is an opportunity for me to look at the wonderful birds around us but a lot of people don’t do this and live their lives mindlessly instead of being in the present. It is actually so sad and all this to say that bird watching is an amazing hobby that will make you feel more alive.

Its so important to really take the time to ground yourself in this day and age. I really didnt believe the morning dove sang anymore because my childhood friend and i talk about nostalgia so much and when I was at her house with my babies the last time we both heard it again. She says every once in a while she still hears them but it had been years since i remember hearing it. I hear it in my yard now and as im typing there are birds chirping loudly right outside my front door. Your video is inspiring. I love grounding myself in the present but dont do it enough. What helps me is realizing with my 2 kids that if we dont then we rob our children of the same experience and fun we had. Playing in mud, picking wild blackberries, climbing trees, riding bikes, playing with the waterhose and feeling a sense of connection eith loved ones and thinking this was such a perfect day.

As an “old” person who grew up without phones or internet- or computers for that matter- the sounds of the world give you peace and calm your soul. I often walk to many places -even take the bus because it requires walking too and from- just to hear the world and its sounds. Very calming effect. I also drive with the windows down because I hate the silence a closed car can create. Opening the windows helps me absorb those calming sounds. So I fully support the “get off your damn phone” movement.

More than that, it's also the "omg how could you not know x y z". You can't talk to people or be accepted (aka find community) unless you know everything they know, therefore having to be constantly up to date on everything going on online.
That's what everyone talks about (understandably) , you have to be in on everything in order to have a conversation.
And it's not just about oh you don't know this trend or this song etc.. even more "serious" and "mature" people, they're constantly online looking up every tiny information out there.
It's like in order not to be called a dumb ignorant idiot, you have to be online all the time, as info there is more varied etc.. but also more easily available and fast, more than you'd find by reading books.
The "superficial" people as well as the "intellectuals" are all about shaming you for not obviously knowing this or that.
There's only so much you can know at one given time if you're not constantly looking up/reading/consuming information.
At one point I was like you know what, I'll just go online and "inform myself", instead of complaining. That only resulted in me being constantly on my phone in order not to miss any "omg obvious" information, and guess what, that still happened. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just like the rest, I accociate the mourning dove with childhood. It was always most prevelant when i visited my grandparents, in a sleepy village in a completely different country with a different language. During those long summers waking up to roster calls and mourning doves, I had to be exceptionally creative to fill my time with fun. My cousins and I would run up and down the road playing make-believe and we'd teach eachother our languages. I still hear the morning dove when i visit, where wifi is shotty and slow time with family is limited.
But even more to your point, i started getting sick of the amount of media i was taking in. Videos and music would get on my nerve and id seek out silence. Walks would start as an opportunity to finally listen to a podcast episode only to be spent listening to the trees rustle. And then i realised my new home which I moved to last year has mouring doves. Not only that, but i visited my old home recently, an apartment in a busy loud town across the way from a shopping centre and for fuck sake i heard mourning doves there too!! My whole teenhood i lived there and never noticed.
Take a break for technology. The rewarding feeling when you consume is not linearly proportional to how much you consume. You forget most that information anyway so give yourself permission to set it aside. It'll be there when you come back.

Social media are made to be addictive. And it works. The scarry thing is that sociaty is now in the real world and in the online one. And they are interconnect. So not beeing "online" will mean be an outsider of the society , will mean not full knowing whats going on. That's the problem. And even if the web has brough some really great things, and in the start of social media too, we have taking it to far.
    A really stupid exemple:
If am not on my phone and I don't answer to my boss they will be angry at me.
I think that one of the aswer could be, being able to divide things. Setting bounderis.
I don't want to lose myself on my phone, but also I don't want to lose contact to the world that I am in.
