at around 5:30, you select the two shapes and click the second option (subtract) in order to create the floating shadow (not a drop shadow-which is raster) If you hold Alt while clicking subtract, you will get the floating shadow that can be moved, adjusted, resized etc non destructively! :) Also, should always duplicate the text layer in case you need to start over. Great tutorial though thanks!

This effect / result is super cool. Did not know how to do this, and will definitely use, as working with text in one form or another is my 'thing.' Love this. Clear, straightforward, slow and easy to follow. Thanks so much!

  • @kevinbrydentransformativec3857

Struggled with this initially. But, I see that at 3.29 you delete a layer. I'm guessing that shouldn't have been created in the first place? I don't see any reason for creating it in the first place. But I am new to Affinity. I got there in the end and learned a lot on the way. Thanks for taking the time to explain stuff. Love the font Xx

Nice. I love that you take the extra moment to explain the sub-steps or draw my focus to something that isn't obvious. Really, you're a great teacher. The math guy in me does have to note that it is probably usually said Gowzeeun blur. Then again, in my home town we had a street named after the German author Goethe which should be Gootuh, but the whole town called it Gothee Street.

The purpose for this is to create a cut line around an object then to send it to printer that can do print and cut.

The is a HUGE weakness that need to be addressed if you're going to be taken seriously in this arena. Mostly, folks just want a soft grey shadow - come o guys!

BEFORE you convert your type to Curves - make a copy of it and SAVE IT on another layer - turn that layer off but just save it while it’s still text so you will have it available should you need to make any edits to it layer on. You may never need it but IF you do - you’ll be glad you saved that spare in text form. (Voice of Experience)

For some reason, subtracting the two stroke layers just deletes both stroke layers instead of leaving you with a 'shadow effect' stroke layer. The only thing I cant follow is the portion at 3:24 which that seems to be a mistake anyways. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here - any help would be appreciated.

CONFIRMED: Using only the FX panel (white (Outline, plus Outer Shadow ) this look can be ALMOST replicated. The gradient on the drop shadow (6:56 or so) can't be duplicated without having a second shape since gradients can't be applied to Outer Shadows, only solids colors. Gradients can be applied to the body text using the FX Gradient Overlay option, or by applying a gradient to the text using the Appearance panel or Fill Tool.
