  • Anti-Skid Service message can be caused by faulty clockspring/steering angle sensor.
    Always use fresh Red loctite on the steering wheel bolt.
    Some Volvo cars had a different airbag and different connections. See some examples of angle sensor (depends on the car and equipment, check the fitment). Sensors are also different on STC vs DSTC systems - w/ (with) or w/o (without) dynamic stability control DSTC or traction control STC

    This guy is my most trusted Volvo CZcams source. I replaced my clock spring based on all the feedback that this is the most common problem. However I pulled the codes after and discovered that my ABS module had the soldering board failure. I replaced the module and that replaced the numerous fault codes I was receiving.

    Because we are disconnecting the airbag, be sure to have the battery disconnected for a good 10 minutes before undoing the SRS connectors. Usually, the time it takes to take the steering wheel off is more than enough, so undo the battery first, before taking the steering wheel off

    I read of a guy who detached the SAS from the clockspring very gently, while keeping the back plate unmoved, and took can of compressed air and cleaned the optical sensor, and the codes now all gone, and works. This SAS issue might simply be dust blocking the optical sensor, with no need to buy a new unit.

    Part numbers, Vida Calibration for DSTC cars, forum discussion below (click 'Read more'). Stay tuned, I'm working on a video with more details on removing the wheel
    It seems that all cars with DSTC will require a calibration of the DSTC unit after angle sensor replacement. "The contact reel/SAS replacement requires a calibration reset using VIDA. When it is replaced and this isn't done it will almost always set codes for lateral accel and yaw sensor correlation. The new SAS/contact reel can (and usually does) have a slightly different signal at straight ahead compared to the previous one it was last calibrated to. Effectively when its signal matches the last one's straight ahead signal the yaw and lat-accel sensors say you are cornering or when cornering according to SAS those say you are going straight. Calibration blanks those memory cells and the BCM the learns those as a set once you drive a short distance with some left and right directional change."
    Jymmy57 is a Volvo tech on forums, and he says this
    "Some SAS codes are due to the system sensing the car turning even slightly while wheel is in straight ahead position or going is going straight ahead as reported by the attitude sensors and the SAS says wheel is turned. Is the wheel centered when driving straight ahead? There are two sensors in back of center console that report Yaw and lateral acceleration. The Yaw one (serviced as a set) is the one that can falsely report attitude and the ABS system can blame SAS, especially when the alignment is off in a way that allows the wheel to not be in the straight ahead horizontal steering wheel spokes position when traveling."
    In other words, when the wheel geometry is off, the steering wheel may stay 'turned' even just slightly when driving straight, and this may confuse the Steering Angle Sensor and give the Anti-Skid error. This may not mean the sensor itself is faulty, so may first try to correct the wheel geometry then try a sensor software update. Be aware thought that Volvo may also say the sensor is faulty

    It seems the XC90 has more problems with Anti-Skid messages than the other Volvo cars. Of course, there is also the Yaw sensor, but see what a Volvo tech says about this problem (it's jymmy57 on forums)
    ""Some SAS codes are due to the system sensing the car turning even slightly while wheel is in straight ahead position or going is going straight ahead as reported by the attitude sensors and the SAS says wheel is turned. Can I change the buttons without removing the wheel? I would like to add the buttons for radio control (since I have blanks here), but will it be hard or easy to do?

    • @Peppermint1
      @Peppermint1  Před 5 lety

      You will need to pull the airbag (no need to disconnect it but careful with the wires), then each switch unit is secured with a very small T10 screw and with a side tab - you can see the tab at 6:16. A small screwdriver has to be inserted into the tab and gently pried while pulling the switch unit. Then a small wired electrical connector is attached to each switch unit: this connector also has a tab that must be gently depressed with a small screwdriver to disconnect it. The wires to these connectors are very short, so the switch unit can only be lifted very little to access the connector tab. Quite difficult but doable. I think the switches from 2001-2004 are not compatible to the ones from 2005-2009

      @@zsszeli I can only guess and say normally the steering would be prewired, to add the switch option. That doesn't also mean the switches will work plug in, but perhaps worth a try.

    • @Peppermint1
      @Peppermint1  Před 5 lety +2

      Good question, I think the light is triggered when the clock spring is not correctly adjusted and goes 'off limit', that would be at full turn but only on one side. Just a theory, of course

    • @Peppermint1
      @Peppermint1  Před 4 lety

      The battery needs be disconnected at least 10 min before removing any SRS connector - usually if you undo the battery, the time to take the steering wheel off it's already a good 10 min so I assume the SRS light you got may be from a problem with the SRS connectors. I would remove the steering wheel again and look closely at those airbag wires - see how they stay in the video. Hopefully these didn't get somehow tangled

    Hello! I recently bought a 2006 120kw d5 v70 from a "perekup" (a guy that buys cheap cars in Germany and resells them in my country with a huge markup) and it showed no error codes when I bought it. So next day I am driving and i notice that the check engine light comes up and a warning about the traction control also comes up. I also notice that the traction control stops working (its winter now). So I plug it to a computer and I find 2 error codes related to the dstc - code 0109 and code 000e showing that I have a faulty SAS sensor. I have the most basic radio in my volvo and I remember the seller saying that he added radio control buttons on the wheel himself. Could he have reassembled the wheel incorrectly?

    • @SuperPakalja
      @SuperPakalja Před 3 lety

      In my test drive I noticed that the car tends to steer to the right as it needs alignment, and having read your comment about alignment being as a probable cause I should do that first. The rear is a bit disaligned.
      But my first question still stands. Could he have done something wrong while adding the buttons to the steering wheel?
      Huge thanks for the help

    • @Peppermint1
      @Peppermint1  Před 3 lety

      @@SuperPakalja I understand the Anti-Skid light came on only after driving the car for a while ? In my mind, if it was related to the SAS, the light would have been already there, unless they just cleared and it took a while to come back. But yes, if he removed the steering wheel and messed with the SAS alignment (or damaged the sensor), then it will cause the code. Nonetheless, try doing a 4 wheel geometry first and make sure the garage is aligning the steering wheel perfectly centered when back on the road. Since you say rear wheels are also not aligned, hopefully the car didn't have some rear damage from a crash. See from there. The SAS is not cheap so better go with used, but it will need programmed (set) using Vida software - maybe some high end aftermarket scanners can also program it.

      @@Peppermint1 hello and thanks for the extensive writeup, very much appreciated.
      I was at a geometry garage today, good news is thatthe car doesn't seem to be ever had a crash. Now that the problem with the alignment is fixed it drives straight. I am very sure that the sensor itself is faulty as the problem came up when I had turned the wheel to a lock, driving on the freeway it was fine. Will try to recalibrate it with Delphi software soon, if that doesn't help I'll have a look at the sensor itself. I can get a used one from Lithuania for 20-50 euros and I'll swap it out. Huge thanks for the time again, very much appreciated

      If all SRS connectors sit correctly, may try clearing the code with a good code reader or with Vida. If it doesn't clear, the car needs be checked by a technician. As for the unwind noise, I don't remember hearing such noise. The clockspring has a securing screw that needs removed before putting the clockspring in place - and we must not turn the clockspring once the securing screw is removed

    2011 XC90 here, numerous C-codes and U-codes all pointing to faulty SAS module. Can I replace with a used unit?? Or do I need to buy a new one? Does it need programming or just drive and it will self calibrate? I have an Autel Maxisys Pro which can usually calibrate the SAS modules..... let me know

    • @Peppermint1
      @Peppermint1  Před 4 lety

      I do not know the answer for either the programming or for used sensor. If it was me, I would try getting a used sensor, install it and see what happens. The problem is, it's not simple to verify if a used sensor is damaged or not. Otherwise, read here in the comments section the first comment at the top
