- ►Is your transmission slipping? Are you experiencing any hard or overly aggressive shifts? Have you gone 30,000 miles or more since your last fluid change? If you've answered "yes" to any of these questions, it's time to service your Volvo's automatic transmission.
In this DIY FCP Euro's Volvo Catalog Manager, Adam Goral, walks us through the necessary steps in order to drain, fill, and replace the fluid in your Volvo's transmission. We'll also discuss the tools needed, parts recommended to replace, and any tips and tricks to expedite the process.

BUY THE KIT: www.fcpeuro.com/products/volv...
This is a comprehensive kit put together by Adam that includes everything you need to get the job done, including the updated spec of fluid provided by Aisin. This includes the fluid and gaskets you need as well as seals & plugs that otherwise may be forgotten. Aisin is the manufacturer of the TG-81SC and TF-80SC transmissions, so you know you're using the highest quality fluid and components in your Volvo when you purchase this particular kit.
Aisin Type WS fluid is the only approved oil for Aisin TG81SC transmissions. None of the other fluids available on the market have been evaluated by Volvo to meet the requirements of these specific transmissions regarding shift quality, slipping lock-up functionality and transmission durability.
Final fluid level should be set while the transmission temperature is warm (50-60C) with engine running on a level surface. An electronic TCM reset is highly recommended after the oil change, especially if it has been a while since the last service.
We recommend replacing or changing the fluid in your Volvos automatic transmission roughly every 30,000 miles. If you are unsure of when the last time your Volvo has had its fluid changed - it's a good idea to go ahead and change it for peace of mind. It is also a good idea to change the fluid if you are experiencing and slipping or hard and overly aggressive shifting from the transmission.

Great video!!! While watching I noticed your lower torque rod bushing looks to be a bluish color... Is that a polyurethane upgrade or the stock bushing? I need to replace one.
@@asforme762 Glad you enjoyed the video. Its actually the stock bushing found here www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-torque-rod-mount-corteco-31401239 . Hope you get it fixed!
I'm interested in changing the flui on a S80 I purchased but I'm worried. I had a Audi several years ago that had high mileage on it when I purchased it so wanted to change the transmission fluid. Once the new fluid was in, the Audi couldn't move at all when drive was engaged. The shop said the clutches in transmission were so badly burned, they could not pick up the new fluid. They actually threw the old fluid back in the transmission to get the car to move again. My question is... Should you change the fluid on a high mileage car if you're not sure if it's ever been changed? Is there any test that can be done before changing the fluid to know if it's ok to change it?
Is the procedure for the 6 speed the same?
Thanks Guys, great and very informative video Uncle D.
Please keep the Volvo videos going this video was very helpful and I surely do appreciate it
Glad you found it helpful, simsneon2! We'll be sure to do more Volvo videos!
Perfect video...thorough, well explained. I love it when you tell us the exact tool sizes. Also very organized and clean. Thanks, I'll I view more from you!
Exactly what I needed for my 2018 XC90. Thank you for providing excellent content and concise instruction.
You're welcome, Rogan! Happy to help!
One of the best tutorials and explanations how to change the gear oil in VOLVO. Thank you!
This is one of the best how to automotive videos I have seen. I purchased the kit and the wrong one but you guys helped me out by sending me for free the one piece that was different! The drain screw T40 had been previously stripped. With a dremel tool I cut a slot so that I could use a large flat head screw driver to take it out. (rather then drill and easy outs). Thank You.
I really enjoyed to see the care you took doing this work. Everything from being clean and using a torque wrench to not overtightening the screws that hold splash shield. If everyone took that amount of care our cars would be better and I would gladly hire a mechanic for repairs and services.
Excellent informative video. Great professional guy , describing everything clearly. Thank you !
After watching this excellent video I became motivated to change the fluid in my 2018 S60. I've had it for about 6 months and it would occasionally shift with a thump. It has 93k miles and pretty sure it hasn't been changed before as the fluid was quite dirty. Overall it was relatively easy although the fill plug was really tight and took a lot of force to remove. Surprisingly I didn't even make a big mess which is my specialty. After the second fill I plugged in the scanner and the fluid was already at 33C. but I was surprised how long it took to get to 50C. I didn't time it but pretty sure it was more than 30 minutes. Finally, I took it for a short drive and it seems to shift better than before.
Thanks for the great video....I just serviced the transmission on my 2017 V60 Polestar. The video made it a super easy process!
Glad it helped!
Outstanding video: list of tools and which one you are using on each chore, super videography, great lighting and angles, both the how and why very well explained. Ive watched hundreds of these videos and I cant remember one better than this.
Wow soylent green, we cant thank you enough for the glowing review of the video! Glad you found it helpful and well shot.
Amazingly detailed video, Thank you... subscribing now!!
wow, that two stage drainplug is an awesome feature to have
Thank you so so much I have just got a xc90 2003 model and I have had two places including advice from volvo groups saying this very job will cost me £200 unreal thank you for this
You are welcome, Karl!
Thanks for the video, this video enabled me to carry out a gearbox oil change on my BMW 2 series Aisin gearbox
Glad this worked for you G Singh. Its great when you're able to carryover instructions from one platform to another.
Thanks for the video! Just ordered the refill kit from you guys and with the video it should be easy peasy.
Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks for the video, I was getting ready to change the fluid in our 2013 XC90.
No problem Aaron hope this helped!
Awesome video demonstration. Thank you!
You are welcome, Martin!
I still love the intro shot of the guy hammering a bolt into the undercarriage lol
From Iraq, thank you so much you powered me to do the transmission oil change at home.
Thank you brother 😊
Your English is excellent, however, let me make one small correction respectfully: I believe you could use the word “empowered” versus “powered”. It is a subtle but important distinction. Thank you!
An interesting and educative video. Good one
amazing video! huge thanks!
Excellent video,thank you!
what a great video you make it look very easy !
Superb clarity, thanks
Brilliant video thank you (subscribed).
this video helped to replace transmission oil in Mazda CX-9 2012 same transmission and procedure..well done
Glad we could help!
Thanks for the great video.
Our pleasure Chak
wow, this guy is awesome! You guys rock thank you, this is why I buy from you guys and no one else.
If I may ramble, this takes me back to when my friend and I tried doing this on his 2009 IS350 and my P2 T5 last year. When it was time to fill the torque converter with new fluid, I drew the short straw and laid under the car pumping fluid into the fill plug on his IS while we had the level check in it (same design as here) until bright red came out into the pan we had underneath. Then we let it get to temp and did a final check. He was inside shifting gears after primary fill because he's obsessive about his car. So far everything is fine, but Ionder if that could be done here. I just don't want to get us all in trouble. 😂
Many thanks for the video. I'm in the USA, so I'm using (inch/lbs.) torque's and temperature degrees fahrenheit, so will make the conversions. Also, I'm dealing with and older model (2007) XC90 (six cylinder). But hopefully this gives me a good start. Thanks!
Great detailed presentation.
very nice and educative. thank you regards
awesome video .. great job
Very helpfull!!!! Thank you very much!!
Excellent video thanx!
Great Video!
Thanks FCP Euro for this tutorial on to do this. Today my car made a big of a thud sound when I shifted into Drive. I've never had it happen before and it gave me a bit of a scare. I feel that now is the time to change my Transmisson fluid (I'm not even sure when the last time it was done because I can't find a record of it) especially because I've noticed some hard shifting otherwise. This video perfectly explained everything and now I am more confident that I can complete this procedure. Thanks again!
Glad to be of some help! Sounds like a fluid service is certainly in order!
I got around 6.5 litres in (two dumps) drove the car (s60 D5) around 20 mins to warm the new oil up then checked the level (engine running level ground) about a cup full drained but put the level plug in before completely stopped haven't reset the counter, auto box runs spot on millage 100,000, old oil was black so no brainer
very educative .thank you. regards. .
Always great videos gentlemen.
2015 V60 R design with brown leather seats with black exterior..Nice!
Truly no need to take the air box out. Demo purpose only. So much space to move around. Crazy squirrels go in my engine bay when parked outside on cold nights. They leave a mess of nut shells.
Those crazy squirrels have good taste picking a Volvo, though!
They like Swedish design.
Great tutorial. So I can do this without a VIDA software. All I have to do is to let it warm up about 20 minutes or more then I should be good to go.
My independent Volvo tech is charging me $400. to do this. It’s like an engine oil change except longer.
Really excellent video, very well done.
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video.
very helpful & clear. This Aisin transmission is used in lots of other makes too e.g. Toyota & BMW
Great video thanks
Thanks for video. I heard I might need a filter change as well though, which filter would that be?
Good job my friend from Liverpool 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Overall perfect video 👌 The quality is so high that the first oil draining looks like a string
one small thing I picked up on. 4 quarts is technically only 3,78 liters 😅
Hi. Great video!! I did loved it and learn a lot from it. !! I was only wondering if you can tell me the measuremwnt of the inner side of the large plug, just out of curiosity. Thanks!!
thank you very much sir. you did amazing :)
Cheers!
Very useful videos! Thanks a lot! But where can i get the new o-ring for plug?
Very clear instructions, great work mate.
Perfect tutorial. That perfect choice and avoid flush transmission is pressure to get out dirty cause damage to gearbox. Better drain and fill diluted instead of flush machine. Scotty Kilmer REV UP! :)
Glad you like the video, Juan!
Thank you for your great service. QUESTION -VIDA rec.to "reset" transmission oil counter. Was the Autel tool shown in this video able to "RESET" transmission oil counter. Thank you
Nice video! What is the best oil change interval for TG-81SC? I have volvo v60 2019.
thank you very very good explain !
You are welcome, Patrick!
Brilliant video I'm going to do my 2007 xc70 2.4d5 would it be like this as my car doesn't have a atf dip stick
I Made this same procedure un my P3 V70, but 3 times flushing because my car had 120.000 KM, the transmission running smooth like a silk sheet!!!
I did it to my p3 v70 it has 250.000 km had to do it 4 times and now it shifts like new
Stefan, Thank you very much for your time, could you tell me how you measure the oil level at 50 degrees?
Do you measure it with neutral gear, parking, or direct gear?
thank youStefa
Excellent video please make more content of this car !!!
As this is Adam - our Volvo Catalog managers new daily driver, there will be plenty more to come!
@@fcpeuro can you do the same for 1999-2006 S80?
you should let the transmission sit for 10 seconds in every gear (both ways up and back)...this will dilute the fluid properly the first two drains and give you a closer to bright red at final fill.
Nice video! I have no idea why I didn't subscribe consider I watched a lot of your guys videos and bought stuff from your website as well. Just subed! Also any plan to do a DIY video on a 2018 XC90's rear haldex diff oil change?
Awesome vid, what can I do if my scanner cannot show the trans fluid temp? as you said it should be around 50C on the final drain...
Great video! Anyone know why the small plug was removed when trying drain the transmission? Don’t just remove the big plug will do the job?
Thanks great video, top draw
Glad you enjoyed it!
Really would love to see a video for transmission flushes manual gearbox P1 V50 2.4 engine.
On my first attempt to change the transmission fluid. My small drain plug was not the standard , t30 too small and t40 too large. I have three Torx driver sets (SnapOn, Gearwrench and Duralast) but none included a t35. If you don’t own a t35 might be a good idea to buy one.
Great video!
I found a similar kit on your website for the TF-80SC 6 speed gearbox, but the fitment only included the petrol versions.
Do you have a kit for a 2015 Volvo XC70 D5 AWD (215 hp) ?
Thanks!
I have 2013/2014 XC90, first gen. Do you need to reset the transmission fluid counter using Volvo DiCE for the 2nd gen?
Best repair video I have seen. Very clear and precise. Do you have one for the valve body replacement?
Thank you! Not at the moment, but something we plan to do in the future!
For my 2019 XC40 I removed approx. 2.5-L of Tx fluid from a cold Tx and engine. I did not use a scan tool to monitor fluid level at the end. I did what the video instructed: drained first, then added 4-qt, restarted engine and rowed the gears (didn't run long enough to get up to temp), then drained exactly the 4-qt I put in during the 1st refill. Lastly, I measured exactly the same amount I removed when I first drained it (2.5-L) and refilled with exactly that at the last fill.
Did something go wrong or is it running good
I do exactly the same. It works fine as long as the current fluid was set at the factory. The key is not to let it warm up too much so the volume does not change.
hello good video! the fiat 500 gearbox is also an aisin tf70 ,, in the manual it says that it carries only 2.6 liters it is true?
Yes more Volvo videos pls. I'd love a review of the 2017 V60 Cross Country ;)
We'll be sure to do more Volvo videos, Henry!
@@fcpeuro Can I get your opinion on the 2017 V60 Cross Country?
A REVIEW? Are you kidding?
why do you have to switch on the air filter between oil changes? should it not work without the short time indoors or is this necessary?
Do these transmissions have internal filters? And do you recommend replacing it?
Great video! Is the procedure the same for a 2008 xc90 3.2 liter?
hello, you can measure the internal and externsl diameter of the aluminum washer of the oil drain nut
Can anyone advise if the above procedure can be used for a late 2006 XC90 thanks
Amazing video
Any chance you can do serpentine belt and tensioner replacement video for 2015 s60 b4204t11 engine and also for timing kit replacement?
Btw I’ve noticed you’ve put 8 liters of transmission oil, isn’t it should be 6.6 liter?
Great video! I was trying to T55 to loose up the screw for the transmission oil box but it appears the screw was frozen- any thing that can help to loose it up?
what do you think about motul atf vi? - it says to be fit to aisin aw-1 and toyota atf ws, so it looks like a good fit to volvo spec
Bonjour,
Merci pour cette vidéo qui va bien m'aider à vidanger la boite auto de ma V70 II.
Yes more P3 please
Hey Grat Video. Quick one,,, why there is oil coming out (05:30) from the level plug.. since the same plug is used afterwards to set maximum level..when no oil is no more dripping ??
Please do a video on how to change the timming belt. Thank you
Great video I have an 06. Xc70. 6 speed auto. Is it the same procedure
Good one
Great video! Thanks! Any suggestions for the "An electronic TCM reset is highly recommended after the oil change, especially if it has been a while since the last service?" Something that has to be done at the dealer?
Yes is highly recomended, otherwise the gearbox will have a "seize" at every gear change....
Ok, I have a question.....back when I drove Lincoln Town Cars, it was easy to change trans fluid in them by disconnecting one hose from a metal pipe that went up to the trans cooler, stick a piece of hose on that pipe and put both hoses down into a gallon jug, start the car and let it pump until bubbles were seen in the hose. Stop the car and add that exact amount of new fluid back into the trans and repeat until it was all bright red new fluid. Can't disconnect a hose on this car, but would it hurt anything to open the drain plug, let it drain, start the car and let another couple of litres drain out, stop car, replace plug and add exact amount of new fluid back? Would it hurt the pump or lose prime? It would sure make things easier.
Any instruction for c30 2008 automatic ATF fluid check +drain and fill?
hey ive done it myself before and getting ready to do it again.. was hoping for a video to refresh my memory but no luck. From what I remember jack the car up, take out airbox, find dipstick, drain (should get about 4L), fill through dipstick hole, shift through the gears, check dipstick and add fluid if needed.
Can i use cheaper non branded oil for the multiple flushes and fill.with the original volvo transmission oil at the final?
Will that Maxicheck reset the fluid counter on the Volvo? I'll buy one if it will. If not, is there one that can do it?
Does this same procedure applies for BMW X1 118d F48 2017 whit AWF8F35 gearbox ?
Hi there love your videos I've just done the gear oil change like u have shown on 2012 xc90 2.4 d5 12ltrs of oil so first drain then fill drain then fill drain then final fill is it normal for 1250ml to come back out with engine running at 51 plus degrees tha k you look forward to your reply . Scared to drive it incase not enough oil in box 😮
greetings, I just want to ask, I can't take off the lower sump to see if it's missing, I'm going to replace it, can I take the upper sump off that goes under the filter and if you need oil, you can see if there's enough
Hi, great video. I just bought an 2012 XC70 with same box. Car have 105000 miles on the clock and the gearbox had fluid flush at 60000. I going to replace the oil and flush the box again soon. I noticed, when I do three point turn and shift from R to D the box kinda jerks littlebit sometimes, I was wondering if its normal. The box it self shifting nice and smooth. Thx Rob
I did my friend C30 with an AW55 transmission recently, but the method I used was different. After drining the gearbox & refilling , we the disconnected the oil output to the oil cooler , then ran the engine for a couple of seconds to push a litre of oil out, stopped the engine & replaced a litre. This was carried out 5 times, or untill the oil is clear. This method greatly reduces the new oil mixing with the old oil.
andy530i This is called the Gibbon method
Hi Adam what oil do I use in my af40 gearbox, great content 👍👍
Am I to understand that along with the fresh fluid , the old 3.4 was out in to flush it . ?
Will the autel mx808 work on a 2013 volvo s60? If not, can you recommend one that will work? Thanks!
Would this same kit and procedure work for my 2012 XC90? If not, do you have a video for the 2012? Thanks, and I subscribed!!
