  • Grip is one of those things we could make loads of videos on so here's another one. We go over key concepts on alignment and how the tug works as well as a simple drill I teach early on for most students to get them to feel the disc coming out of the hand correctly.

    I’ve watched this before but today on the course struggling to hit my normal max of 275ft I got frustrated and started going through this series again. I just realized I never actually tried the grip lock & feel the disc rotate out of your hand so I went and tried it and… man I’m getting a ton more spin now. What a drill to get the feel and really focus on grip! I can’t wait to go throw full force again to see the impact. Thank you Josh!!

    That first tip of starting with the index finger on top then tucking it down after you have placed everything else is huge for me. The grip feels really nice and more importantly I have an easy way to replicate it.

    It's kind of funny, but I stumbled across a Dave Dunipace video a few weeks ago called, "Pivot & Pop with Dave Dunipace" where he's talking about a lot of the stuff you guys have talked about in the last couple of videos. Pretty much staying loose until the last moment where you then switch into a tight grip. Anyways, I was drilling into the net and getting the actual tug feeling with my drivers that I had apparently not been getting. It's something I figured out with putters early on, but for some reason my brain didn't think I should do the same thing with drivers. I'm stoked to have another drill to mess around with in the field. Appreciate everything you guys do and all the work you do to create these drills for us. You guys rock!

    OK, I finally had time to try this in the field and I am stunned. Zero effort practice throws go way farther than they have any right to. It has completely changed my mental self talk when doing pre-throw routines. I knew it would be good for me, but I had no idea just how much! Thank you.

      Also silimilar is the brace. I walk through it instead of stopping. Great analogy with the water bucket. May be better than the whip analogy.

    Thank you! I felt the disc ripping out of my hand on rare occasion, and I have been wondering why am I not feeling that. You completely answered that by saying "Don't help the disc out of your hand". I don't think I've been letting go of the disc, at least not intentionally, but I was definetly not tucking in the wrist. The tucking in, and concentrating on keeping the hand closed, brough this feeling back. I definitely felt the tug! And I was able to continue feeling it while progressing into my regular "backyard throw with a putter". Result: I see way more spin on the disc than usual, and I hit the fence. That's a first! I am looking forward to practice this on the course and see if I can feel the tug while worrying about throwing the disc into the creek.

    @overthrowdiscgolf, could you do a video on how to drive uphill (from the teepad)? Especially in controlling nose angle when you are inevitably going to be nose up. Maybe better to throw slower or less stable discs? Anyway, I suck at this and you're my only hope!!

    Thanks so much for sharing this. I went to a field yesterday to try it out, and the results were immediately noticeable. Really helped with snap, spin, and therefore distance.       @@awwitsHurts like a lot of coaches…. Genetics is the great equalizer most people don’t have the athletic genetic advantages to take good form to next level. So you have to separate Josh the coach from Josh the player. On the flip side just because you were a top tier player with great form doesn’t meet you are good at coaching others to be the same.

      @@deanotto1130 that is so true. Just look at those who coach the best tennis players. Were they themselves in top 10, or even top 100? Very rarely. Understanding the mechanics, knowing how to explain it, having an eye for someone's movement and seeing what is wrong and what is right, those are separate talents.

    Field tested your grip drill and, not surprisingly, it worked great.
    But, then I tried it with the forehand.
    Going on 3 years into this sport and my forehand is, well, not as bad as it could be and not as good as it should be.
    So, doing this grip drill, on the FH, felt really good and I was able to get my forehands to, at least, fly straight at what I was aiming at. Distance was about the same.
    Started releasing at the 3 o'clock position.

    Absolutely no joke, I've been power gripping for 6 of the 7 years I've been playing. Never really thought much more about my grip. I throw around 390-410ft. I tried getting my power grip how Josh does in this video and threw into my net and felt a lot faster.
    Took it to the field and threw 485' twice. pardon my french but what THE fuck. Headed to the online store now for this one.

    Hey. Something I discovered recently is that it is possible to change the playback speed of most youtube videos.
    It helps when watching form videos. Especially the ones that are "slow motion" already.
    Just click on the settings gear icon and select "Playback Speed" to adjust it.
    Then after hitting the pause button, use the cursor to step forward and backwards. The timeline slider is a red dot. Click on the rim of that dot to get minimum steppage.

    Do you plan on doing more of the Pro slo-mo things like with Simon and Drew? Would be neato if you were able to get some of them pressure-detection thigns to put on their hand (fingers/thumb). Similar to what they put in shoes to see where pressure is applied doing explosive movements. Would be a cool way to track the grip strength beginning to end of the entire throw.

    I've started to develop a callous on my index finger just slightly in front of the first knuckle. This is from the disc ripping out of the hand instead of actively opening the hand.

    I did the drill a bunch (indoors 🤫), and nothing really happened... I had no problem holding on to the disc. Then I watched in slow motion, tried to mimick the motion better, and after a few more tries the disc suddenly SHOT out of my hand and into my wall, causing me to exclaim "WHAT?!". Very excited to try this out on the field!

    So this is a cool drill, I've done things like it with people I try to help with their form. One thing that you didn't explicitly mention, but implied was that you can't be "mashing" on the disc for this. I would love you to give some clear recommendations for how hard to grip the disc during this drill. Also does this pressure need to change as you increase speed with the drill? What disc type do you prefer for this drill? You look like you're using a midrange or possibly a slow fairway initially.
    Thanks for the content you put out. Honestly this is the only channel I feel comfortable pointing people to without identifying videos to watch.

    Can this still be done if your pulling in the down swing with your lead elbow? Is it a combo of pull then “jab” outward or just a jab out? Asking for a friend… haha

    I have an issue where I cannot get it to come out of my grip even with halfway griping. I dont get more than 300ft of distance so i dont think im generating any pivot. any thoughts?

      If your hand is behind the disc at the point of release it can't help but come out.

    Went out and played with this today. Should I be concerned if I wasn't really able to hold on to the disc from that one-leg deep pocket position? I couldn't hang on to the disc to the point that it flew behind me or anything. It was coming out pretty straight, no matter how hard I tried to hang on. That being said, I definitely think there's something to the wrist curl. I saw a lot of recommendations from people like Ezra and Paul Ulibarri who said don't try to do that. What I noticed today is that my wrist was starting out straight and opening up at the hit. I tried to focus on starting and keeping it bent and I think it added like 25' to my putter throws. Way more consistent releases. I also noticed after progressing to the second part that my wrist was straightening out during the reach back. I think I was just trying to reach back (or leaving my disc too far behind me). Stopped focusing on extension and focused instead on keeping that wrist bend, not turning my head early, and keeping the hand closed through follow through. Seemed to help a lot.

    Thanks for the videos! This might not be the appropriate place to ask this question, but I'm going to give it a shot anyway. Why is it that somedays I can throw 450ft with ease and other days it seems like I'm struggling to throw 350ft?? On the strugging days the discs seem to fade to the left way faster (right handed, backhand) and when I try to compensate with more anhyzer angle, my throw just feels weak. But on the days when I can throw good, I can get to 450ft with little effort, comparitively speaking, and it seems like I can get even my most stable discs to flip up and then fade much later in the flight? Probably not the easiest question to answer, especially without seeing my throws, but I thought since you coach many people, that you might have some insight into this really annoying issue....       I'm obviously just some rando, but from my experience, your issues could be (from most likely to less)
      1. Form not consistent
      2. Overuse of arm and body, which may decrease arm speed and/or form
      3. Climactic conditions. Some discs are going to fly different given varying temperatures and wind conditions.
      All things being equal, throwing more reliably overstable discs will provide you with more consistency, if not more thrills and excitement. Try for a more conservative game plan and put the more understable discs to the back and see how that approach works out. Maybe a more boring game, but I bet you're gonna find more consistency

    The release point/hit point/this is my biggest focus as of late. It seemed like no matter what I changed about walk up, timing, arm movement etc I would still throw the disc in inconsistent directions. Some of my best rips of a disc go crazily off to the right and I feel like its a grip lock ,but it's actually probably correct I just hit the release point wrong. This drill is going to help out tremendously

      It's more likely your lower body positioning. Release point isn't something you can really change with the arm to make it go right or left

      Watch pros throw their feet are not in line with the line the disc goes on. Slingshot and Joel Freeman both have videos on their channels about how you need to have your feet lined up 10 to 20 degrees off the line you are trying to hit. I get comments on my throw how I look like I am aiming left but the disc goes straight

    I would think keeping the wrist curled through release would lose speed vs letting the wrist snap to straight or beyond. I will have to try it and see.

      When done at full speed (full reach back, power pocket, and brace), the force vector is so immense that it should open your wrist up without even thinking about it. This drill is meant to exaggerate that feeling so that it becomes muscle memory during a full throw.

    Ok so I am trying to rebuild my form after being stuck at 300’ for ~4 years. I love the teaching you guys do on here, very clear and informative. I had a question, how do you keep your wrist curled at the hit? I am trying everything and as soon as I get to the hit the wrist opens up. Is it simply practice over and over trying to keep the wrist curled?

    Thoughts on dropping the pinky off of the disc and only using a 3 finger grip? I've been throwing 3 fingers for years and hit about 380' and under with accuracy, wondering if I'm losing extra distance or anything else by doing this? I do it because it's more comfortable, but I would switch back if there's a good reason to learn to deal with it.

    Can you advise on someone who has a shorter pointer finger. When I do your directions on how to power grip, my pointer finger cannot reach the bottom of the flight plate.

    Well that's interesting! Also the bucket analogie sounds quite right. But stopping the extension at the hit does hurt in my neck and also I'm confused of stopping vs. follow through which seems to interfere!? Also it does not seem, that Pros do stop at the hit!? Do I misunderstood something? Thanks for your great videos anyways :)

      You don’t stop during a full throw! Super important. Only to be done at slow speeds to feel the pivot

    Been meaning to come back to this drill. Finally did it today, and I can already tell the disc has not been ripping out of my hand very well, so I'm going to spend some real time with this one. I noticed when I keep my wrist down (pour the coffee), I feel the disc ripping out harder/pivoting more. I think it's due to more finger surface area on the disc, so I was wondering if there was a correlation between nose angle and spin? i.e. I feel like nose-down throws also generate more spin, and vice-versa, and if the data supports that.

      Not that I have seen personally but I’m also probably not the best guy on that front. But I have thrown mega nose down and generated very minimal spin

    So, to clarify, the wrist stays firm at the hit and doesn't flick through it correct? I bring this up from others always saying the wrist is the last part of "the whip" and that makes me assume it flicks like a whip through the throw

    Genuine question, if youre not popping the wrist at the end, shouldnt a straight wrist simply be equal in power as a curled one?

      If it’s straightened out as a result of the disc redirect, then I think it’s fine. They are more or less straight/lightly curled at disc ejection, but the point is to definitely not whip the wrist outward.

    When i try to bring my index finger under the disc it crams my palm skin and is uncomfortable, does that mean im doing it wrong, or is my index finger not long enough?

      Adjust it to where it’s comfortable without totally ruining the setup. Hands are weird

    hmmm have i been monkey pawing this whole time? i cant wait to give this grip a try! i know i have many flows in my form and flexibility but this one feels amazingly different and easy to replicate time and time again! Josh if you see this i am building a 9 disc bag to play a round off of only recommendations of youtube creators. Currently the bag is looking like a Wizzard, Pig, Zone, hex, Instinct, Stalker, and Pro Thunderbird. would you mind picking one more for the bag?

    What does it mean if the disc is staying in my hand? It pivots to holding behind the disc off the back fingers, but I’m still holding on.

    Does resisting the “tug” also apply to the forehand? I’m assuming so because I’ve been trying this and it feels like the way.

Still actively snapping through with the fingers and wrist but letting the disc rip out my fingers as opposed to flinging them open. Is this a thing, or no?

    While I like the repeatability of this grip technique, I can’t seem to get the nose down with this grip. If I keep my index finger on top I’m good but when I shift my index finger to the bottom the nose moves up. Is nose down a grip thing or a wrist thing? I know it’s both but I feel like I’m setting myself up for failure gripping like this. Ugh…

    I did this drill today and the disc wouldn't leave my hand😢 Am I supposed to allow the wrist flick or keep holding it tight so it doesn't flick at all? Maybe I was supposed to let it flick on its own but not stop it from doing it.

    Hey Josh and everyone at overthrow, thanks for this vid!
    One thing that I can't seem to figure out: when I try to time the hit and try to resist the tug, the disc doesn't rip out of my hand and I have no problem holding onto the disc - in fact, I don't even feel a tug at all. When I throw, I end up having to let go of the disc which causes a bunch of problems with everything else (spin rate/hyzer angle, etc). I'm throwing pretty fast (up to max 61mph) so I know it's probably not a speed thing. Any tips on how I can troubleshoot this? I feel like this is a major piece I'm missing to be able to throw far!

      Update: I was experimenting with less and less grip strength to see what would work and from the right pec to the hit only needed about 20% the grip strength.
      Ended up feeling the disc rotate around my index finger for the first time ever and even had the disc eject behind me once into my neighbor's yard! Looking forward to drilling this in and seeing the results with my techdisc!

    Don't you release at least a little bit ? When I try it while gripping very hard I manage to keep the disc in my hand, sorry if this sounds dumb !

      The slower the throw the lighter the grip will be.

    Anyone have grip suggestions for players with short index fingers and/or joint stiffness? I find it near impossible and painful to bring the index finger under the rim without the "monkey" grip. With the index finger being critical, what adjustment can I make to get the index finger in the proper position given my physical limitations. Surely, there are others out there who have this challenge. Thanks!

      Can't say for sure, but you could try just skipping the index finger and use the middle finger as the pivot point. I have no idea if it will work or not lol, but worth a try.

      I have short fingers and in order to keep the nose down I actually rest my pointer finger on rim of the disc. My middle finger is my main pivot point as a result. I can use my pointer finger as the pivot point for mid-range rims and higher but the grip becomes more of a modified fan grip for me as opposed to a power grip.

      I have seen a player putting index finger top of dosc and thumb top of index finger. Try and see if it works or not

    Man, I don't know if I do this wrong or what. Are my fingers too strong? Is my arm strength too weak (probably)? Point being, if I ACTUALLY try to keep hold of the disc with JUST the forearm extension, I DO. Goes nowhere, stays in my hand. I can whip that back and forth all day as hard as I can (setting up the grip as indicated). Can most people not? If I loosen my grip a little, it'll come out, but I'm not sure i'm "supposed" to - you said the "goal" was "hold on", so I'm not sure which I should be doing? If I do the full reachback-pullthrough, I can't hold onto it; it goes basically straightish. I mean wobbly and like 15' into the ground, but straightish. Feels bad either way.
    I am more or less a total newb (been trying to develop technique for only a few months), so I ASSUME your advice is spot on and that the issue here is with me - this is a genuine question: what am I supposed to be learning here? Are you saying I shouldn't actually intentionally open my hand when i throw for real, or is this just for this drill? Is the key point don't open the wrist at all? I'm finding with a full reachback and pullthrough, my wrist opens a bit whether I want it to or not.
    Sorry, just not sure on the key points/intention. Would love to hear from anyone who knows what this is about and/or can speak to the above...

      @@OverthrowDiscGolf - oh hey, thanks for the reply. I tried it a bit more, loosening and tightening the grip. If I'm JUST doing the arm extension, I have to barely hold it for it to come out (sloppy, not firm). If I put in just a little torso rotation, it'll rip out. Got a few to go behind me, but not consistently. I'll practice this some more; see if it helps - I think the grip and wrist positions are part of my lack-of-spin problem.

    How am I supposed to keep my wrist curled when the disc releases from my hand? The disc wants to open up my wrist. I'm not internationally opening up my wrist.

      If it opens up on its own that is fine. Just don’t intentionally unfurl it

    So being firm helps with the tug ? Does a slight wrist curl aid in a live throw ? (heard it both ways). Thanks for the post, a new one to try in the yard. I am sure I'm a monkey gripper, a pinch monkey gripper though. It's apparent I need to try that higher level chimpanzee grip, thanks for another eye opener. Will look at the store, compulsive like a monkey.

    Does the grip losen to get it to release? I can’t tell if I’m gripping too tight. I’m younger with a lot of power. Don’t think I should have issues getting the disc to come out

      @@OverthrowDiscGolf I watched your video talking about backhand grip and I think it makes more sense. I used your grip way too hard on my golf clubs too and left me with blisters. But I feel like I get more power in the disc with a tighter grip. Definitely something to play around with

      During field work I had this moment of uncertainty. Do I drive the lead elbow forward to the point it is past my shoulder (said differently: behind my shoulder) or do I think more like a series of levers unfurling.
      In retrospect it's obviously the latter!

      @@DG_ADK the elbow goes first. Not unfurling in order. It’s not the standard kinetic chain. Elbow goes past the shoulder and the shoulder unfurls later

    i really dont get the nose down stuff at all, because alot of time i need to throw uphill? How in the world am I supposed to do that with a nose down and if I watch distance competition videos the throw UP?

      @@emil3445 putters can take a little bit of nose up. All depends on what you’re trying to do with it though. I almost always throw my putter with nose up because I’m using them for approaches and I want them to land soft.

    So I used to exaggerate this on my throws and it really jacked up my flexor tendons. I would proceed with caution. 2 mph is not worth getting trigger finger.

      Could be. You might try a lighter grip then you need in the beginning and then work up to the correct grip pressure.
