    I think you've mostly been teaching this idea subtly for quite a while. You've been all about footwork, x-step, coil, brace, quiet off-shoulder, getting the throwing hand moving past the body fast, etc. But good for you to come right out and say that the arm-pull is also part of the throw. It feels great to hear that - great relief that I can stop trying to rotate the hips with a noodle arm!

    I feel like the single most important part of this is making sure you get planted before moving the arm. When I was "Arming" the disc I wasn't planting so I would end up shanking everything.

    A collapsed pocket by lagging the arm also puts a ton of strain on the shoulder joint. Speaking from experience, leading with the elbow leads to much less shoulder soreness.

    Thank you!!! It never made sense to me that the arm had to be a noodle and I gave it up a year ago. Worked through your form building series (better form never ends) and have consistently better distance AND accuracy by focusing on arm position and speed at release. Kudos on being fact driven!

      It just has to relaxed at the fully extended "reachback". Stiff muscle is slow. Nearly all terms used to describe discgolf form are horribly wrong.

    Great video. This idea has been on my mind for a few weeks. It started when I allowed my body to truly get set in the right position,when my arm was back, and my base was solid. That gives my arm the chance to get ahead of my momentum. I think that's why Drew Gibson can walk at snails pace and still bomb. Keep it up dudes! I'm anxiously waiting for the ah ha putt video.

    I really appreciate that. You are working to throw out everything you thought you knew before. I am in that boat where I’m capped out at 300 to 330 on my average long drive.
    I recently saw a video on trebuchet disc golf where he did it really focus on this, but there was this one part where it clicked in my head that I need to try to keep my shoulders closed as long as possible and try to throw the disc out. Throwing into a net in my garage, my form is actually starting to look more “pro like”. I’m glad it seems like I’m on the right path after seeing your recent talk on this.

    I remembered you teaching this to Evan Smith in his lesson video. You showed him a drill to release the disc into the net while looking down and not rotating, just using the arm. I love that drill and it has helped me throw better.

    I was flipping through reels, found a clip. Dug deeper found this video and literally had a television brain exploding moment where everything clicked. I throw generally pretty far at least for the courses here 360-380 range and I went out today and did field work, worked on moving my hand as fast as I could and keeping my legs in place and I have never thrown further. Thank you so much.

    I started playing a year ago. After watching a bunch of videos and working on my form a lot, I *lost* 50 feet on my backhand!! And lately I've been trying to twist the hips first, but it just doesn't work. This video makes so much sense!! I also appreciate any time you can explain what it feels like to the person throwing the disc. So helpful! Thank you!

    I feel like every time I think through a form concept, you come out with a video about it right after. I thought of this when watching one of the Foundation videos recently where they threw standing completely backwards and were surprised like they've never thrown so well before.

    Thank god I can quit trying to coil my body before I throw. I literally hurt my lower spine last week by trying to twist too much. This is a great video for the simple explanation on great form for throwing greater distances. Thank you Coach!

    I needed this. My lower body was trash and needed to be completely reworked but I somehow thought this would magically translate into 100's of extra feet, that throwing my hips and planting harder would somehow make my arm faster. I recently was watching an Eagle and Simon clinic and they were saying elbow should lead or be the part you focus on pulling through and so I was starting to work on that but this video helped give more context to how to do that while still generating power from the legs. I like the thought of getting my body planted nice and wide and getting a weight shift still but resisting rotating forward too early, keeping my chest facing the side, something to work on.

    I mistakenly did a good form throw once and I was shocked to see what the disc did as it stayed in the air much longer than usual for me and went hella far. The "feeling" I had was as if my chest was turned more away from the direction I wanted to throw and I pulled the disc towards my throwing arm's armpit. This is an excellent video!

    Brilliant!
    I’ve noticed the same problem in my form - collapsing the pocket due to exaggerated upper body rotation. My backhand is so slow and powerless that I’ve had to resort to a very wide railway track to compensate for a ”necessary” griplock in order to get a longer acceleration.

    Love the video, and I think this is one of the best explanations I have seen yet. The past couple of months, I have had a sole focus of getting into the position David is in, not really caring how I get there because I know my body will optimize that over time. I'm kind of reverse engineering my throw. It's basically impossible to get yourself into that position and then throw a dud.

    Best video yet. I've struggled to grasp how (or what it even means that) pros accelerate the disc immediately after planting. I've been throwing (accelerating) from my left pec forever, knowing that it's wrong. Tried everything to fix it. Watched this, tried to implement it, and throwing feels completely different (in a good way). Super inaccurate atm, but that will come later. Thank you for this video.

    Great video! I know I’ve been taught to let my arm lag behind in order to get that whip effect, but found the pulling through always seemed to give more control and hitting my max distance more consistently. Also would see less early releases or grip locks.

    Great video. Love that you're breaking misunderstandings regarding discgolf form.
    Here's how I'd articulate how backhand form works: you don't want to rotate your hips through. The hips don't directly power your throw. If you do that and what Josh has shown very well is that you will collapse your shoulder. What does that mean?
    To make this more clear think about how your arm gets accelerated. The whole point of your walk up and stride is to, when you "extend" you're building momentum against your back muscles (mainly traps and lats). You're trying to get a rapid stretch in your back muscles (not necessarily a very deep stretch) because your body will react with a reflex flexing those muscles extremely quickly. This is where the power eventually comes from.
    So what happens when your shoulder collapses? It will mainly create a stretch in your rear deltoid muscle, which you know if you ever trained it in isolation, is not very strong by itself.
    So you're not throwing with your arm really (because your biceps and triceps don't extend the shoulders) and you're not throwing with your hips (because first and foremost you don't want to twist your hips rapidly to put torque on the spine and your shoulder will collapse).
    You're throwing with the big muscles which can produce a lot of force and speed by using your body reflexes when muscles experience a rapid stretch. Therefore it's probably a good idea to hold a doorframe and feel the positions where your lats get stretched and then try to get a similar sensation (not a long deep stretch but a short stretching sensation) when throwing. You'll get exactly that when you try to keep everything back as Josh said. The hips move into the plan, loading the back and letting it explode, which will extend the shoulder rapidly and a loose arm will get into the pocket and shoot through without collapsing.
    Again, very well put in this video. I just wanted to give my understanding stemming from a background of weightlifting, running (here you're essentially using the tendons and muscles in your calves to propel you forward) and a whole lot of trying to figure out how to throw.

    Damn, it makes sense! Don't know how many times I collapsed my pocket trying to rotate as fast as possible and letting the arm stay behind. Always end up hitting to off arm shoulder.
    An eye opener for sure!

    Perfect. This helps a lot. I have been trying to get this down by throwing into a net for the last month and not liking the results but I just took a few discs out into my yard/field and, while I didn't throw as far as I have in the past with bad form, the distance achieved was good but, more importantly, 'effortless' -- it was just so easy. Discs that were uselessly understable for me in the past now fly just like they are supposed to. My last shot had some 'snap' on it which I haven't had in a long time. Thanks so much!

    Completely agree with this video. It took me a long time of learning form to realize that I need to arm it more. I has a huge problem with realy rotation in my form from the start. To fix it, I just had to think about looking perpendicular to where I was throwing, pull the disc through the pocket, and then let my arms turn my body and chest on the follow through. I have been playing disc golf now for about 8 months and can consistently throw around 350ft.

    I've been infected by ball golf and baseball swings to create lag and all of that made sense to me trying to "kinetic chain", but those movements have an additional gigantic lever to create "crack of the whip" - but it's just not the same motion and am guilty of everything you pointed out as a newbie. Looking forward to more!

      But even in ball golf, the chest and hips don't open until after impact. I think the ball golf and disc golf swings are incredibly similar.

      @@brianwall240 Huh? Woods, Nicklaus, Snead, all the modern swings on tour (Scott, Morikawa, etc.) all have their hips completely open, belt buckle to target, as their shoulders whip club to ball. That seems to be the complete antithesis to this video, no?

    Nice to see you've come around. I commented that exact thing on a video of yours a year or so ago. Power doesn't "travel" through the body. Our musculoskeletal structure is by necessity a shock-absorber first and a lever-system for our muscles second, or we'd die from the impact of jumping down from a chair.

    So many people needed to hear this. Including myself. I started noticing so many pros keeping that left leg behind them, similar to the way bowlers do. It seems to keep the body from beating the arm to the hit. I've gained about 40 ft. in the past two weeks, just from trying to stay behind the hit. Great video

    Watched this yesterday, then went to the field today and focused exclusively on this stuff. I was throwing 40 or 50 feet further. Low, flat lasers with my Leo3s and Eagles, and was consistently hitting what Udisc said was 350 (+-14ft). I obviously pulled and flipped more shots, but severely cut down on nose-up stall-out throws. Thank you so much for the great video! I can't wait to get out and throw more "bombs".

    My buddy and I filmed ourselves trying to focus on getting our arms out in front. Hole one at the local course is in a deep 380’ spot, I’m always coming up short and heisering out in the rough or over turning a flex line. I feel like I hit a wall around 350’ and can’t power the disc farther. First throw was a flat release that made it pin high with probably 70% of the usual effort I put in. Less effort, more distance, instantly.
    Thank you for breaking it down so simply. I think a lot of people focus on the reach back and the coil which leads to an arm that gets stuck behind the body and has to round.

    If you look at a lot of top pros like McBeth, Gibson, Lizotte they continue to turn their shoulders to the target while releasing. Wiggins is not the exemplary disc golfer. The power is definitely generated from the ground up if you watch all the above in slow motion. I think Josh is definitely correct about stopping everything helping generate power but before the stop their is an initial turn from the ground up using power generated from the momentum, and turn of the back foot/hip into the brace then lead hip pulling back all slightly before the core/shoulders/arm comes through.

    Nice. Love this take.
    I was disagreeing a bit with some of your stuff some time ago (I might just have been wrong) but I really like this. There has bee nsome interesting development in your teachings here, and it's exciting to follow. I've had tremendous success the last year by thinking that everything EXCEPT my right arm is to curl in towards an imaginary pole at my center of weight right at/after the plant - and that focus helped with understanding brace, hip rotation, rotation timing, angles, lots of things. I feel like the weight shift/momentum gives kinetic power potential, and the contraction (as I like to think of it) done properly, mind you, is what makes it easier to let that arm rip. This video showed me some more to practice and I already think my arm is too far behind.
    Also loved the scripting/editing of this video. Especially the long silence on the wiggins thing xD

    This. I think of it in my mind as “staying in the pocket” aka yes staying sideways until the disc releases. On the rare occasion I remember to do it I produce a ton of effortless power. Most of the time I just throw with my chest turned like a Josh (newb)

    This video reinforces my body's natural signals perfectly. I was a football player and as such focused a lot on explosiveness and progression in the weight room. Therefor I've learned to recognize the result of good form based on where soreness presents itself. Over the last 10 years of playing disc golf I've realized that when I play a long course and my form is good 370' is easy (I'm only 5'7" so that seems pretty decent to me) and I'm sore in my peck and triceps (a result of firing both lower and upper body in sync). On the same coarse when I struggle for distance, usually my shoulder and elbow are sore (tendon soreness not muscle) which tells me my arm isn't pulling to match my lower body. When both upper and lower body are firing together, it is much lower impact on my body and makes distance feel much less effortless.

      Your body's reaction to good form may be a good video for your channel. I feel like many people can't relate to how athletic movements should effect you. Being sore isn't necessarily bad.

    This totally throws off everything I’ve been trying to learn since I started 2 years ago. Hard enough getting into disc golf in my 40s but now I’m finding out I’ve been doing everything wrong?! Very frustrating if true since I’ve watched a lot of videos and practiced countless hours.

    I just hope people dont take the title out of context and ignore your videos on the power pocket and how to get there. My interpretation of "arm the disc" is the back-leg-plant-and-rotate-boys (Which I used to belong to) who avoid the power pocket like it's poison 😅

    Dude, your timing on this video is awesome. I was just working on my form to stop collapsing my pocket. Everyone always says to keep a loose arm, which necessarily has all the effects you describe. I'd like to hear if you have any suggestions for mental cues or drills to develop the proper engagement of the arm/shoulder/back muscles necessary for this proper form. It's hard to get out of the feel of rotating the body while letting the arm lag.

    Nice vid. I low key started doing this yesterday practicing. My off arm driving my shoulders forward helped but distance and speed went way down. Brought back in my lead arm form from pulling in ultimate. More arm and more whip instantly equated to way more spin and distance on my putters and mids. Easily hitting 200-250 with putters and 250 +275 with my mid ranges. Now the release angle lol.......

    Not a coach or even that great a disc golfer but i did go to school for exercise science and kinesiology. I think it's very important to think about things as compounding movements. As a body parts move connected to another moving body part, those two velocities are added together(as long as they move in the same direction) So it isn't move one, stop, move the next, stop, move the last, release. You cannot store up kinetic energy to release. Its a fluid movement of all the joints moving in orchestra, compounding their velocities. But its a balance, you can't move everything all the time. To much rotation or movement can reduce the power potential of something else. So its a fine tuning. Great video BTW.

    This is my goal for field work this year. My problem is that I throw really far the wrong way, so I’m only comfortable changing if I can get the same distance. But this video is very helpful, in any case.
