How To Throw Flat Backhands Every Time

- You have to be able to throw your backhands flat or else accuracy is difficult and maximum distance is impossible.
I’ve worked with thousands of players at private lessons and my Stokely Method Seminars and 100% leave being able to throw flat. All you need to do is first understand the real cause of the disc going nose up and then follow this approach to fix it.
In this method, you will be required to throw incorrectly for a little while but it is just a temporary step to relearn the proper mechanics. You have my word, if you do this, it will work.

It worked! I practiced by backhand slapping my friend, and he said my form definitely looked better! Judging from the marks on his face, I'd say the wrist swivel is gone! Thanks Scott! 😂
hahah, good one :D
😂😂😂
Go ahead and make your jokes, Mr Jokey... Joke-Maker... but Scott just hit you with some (backhanded, nose down) knowledge!
This 51 yr old, recovering from elbow injury, went out to throw tonight, the goal was to work on throwing nose down, not nose up. Next thing you know I was throwing mid ranges dead flat and they were going as far as fairways usually go. Then swapped discs and threw fairways as far as drivers. Thanks for the great tip!
Scott has so much disc knowledge. I’ve spoken with people who played with him and they only had good things to say.
42 and getting back into the sport with new discs after many years, and am going to try and I feel the explanations in the first half of the video are just what I need, you be thinking of my joints and how they move best.

Scott this video cut 3 strokes off my record for my home course today! My drives straightened out and I also set a distance record. I can’t thank you enough.
Just caught the skins coverage, that truly was one of the best shots I've seen. Congratulations Scott and great instruction as always.
Forsure! I've rewatched it a few times .lol Everybody was so stoked!!

Wow. It's crazy how you can watch a million videos that never really click, then you see that one thing that gives you that "ah-ha!" moment. I love the way you break everything down in your training videos, your attitude toward life, and everything you do for the sport. You have helped me a ton, and not just in disc golf. Thank you.
Scott is a limitless fountain of knowledge. Love this!
I was swiveling my wrist just like you pointed out here, having all the related problems associated with that. In one video, you solved one of the biggest problems with my backhand. Two months later, I'm throwing consistently farther, flatter, and more on my line than ever. Low ceiling shots don't scare me any more. I'm getting distance with mids and fairways that I've never had before. Even better, now I understand how to throw that controlled nose up stall shot when needed. All my friends have noticed, and they are learning too. Thank you!!!
Almost a solely forehand player looking to improve my backhand and this was an excellent explanation thank u!
Added 30-40 feet to my drive instantly. Should be taught to every begginer. Thanks dude.
This is one of the best tips I've ever gotten. It has improved my backhand (when I remember to think about it) tremendously. Thank you Scott!
Such a great video and advice on how to keep your drive flat. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the community.
Can’t wait to go try this! I just started disc golf last year and the nose up problem is KILLING me - my distance is laughable.
All the form technique videos I've watched over the years and I've literally never heard the problem described this way before. Can't wait to try this out in the field. Thank you!
THANK YOU!! I have been trying everything and I mean EVERYTHING to throw flat and in 30 min this had me ripping fairways 300+ dead straight and FLAT! Thank you again Scott and congrats on the skins match it couldn't have gone to anyone better!!!
Excellent breakdown of basic biomechanical efficiency of the elbow and wrist snap.
Dude! You're the best coach ever for disc golf.
PS I just finished your skins match wow!!! I was getting tears in my eyes during your speech!!! You're a true inspiration brother I'm glad you won that match! Sometime during this season you're going to get on a coarse that fits your gm and you'll place really high up on the card guaranteed I can feel it!!! Much love and respect ✌️!!!
Scott: the way you teach is so accessible. I have only been playing for a little over two months but your forehand video changed the game for me and I can’t wait to get to a field and try this backhand stuff out. I threw +16 two weeks ago at the local beginner course and after your forehand tips I just shot +5 on the same exact course this past weekend. Can’t thank you enough for helping us all progress in this game.
So happy to see a professional talk about the wrist and forearm correlation. Whenever. I've tried to teach people how to throw a backhand. Tell them to focus on their wrist, and once they find the flat position to hold that position of the wrist through the shot. You definitely did a better job of explaining it than I ever have, but the fundamentals are the same. Thank you for this refresher
Just started really learning backhand last year and I've been struggling to find the right technique. I went out to the field yesterday with these tips in mind. I followed your advice and threw an anyhyzer into the ground and it just kinda clicked for me. It gave me the perspective of doing the angle to the extreme which I never really did. I could feel how I would need to correct to throw flat and not nose up like id been struggling with. Thank you Scott! I've watched a ton of videos trying to figure what im doing wrong and this one seriously helped me more than any other video!
Thank you so much for this video! I am a 53 year old woman and not quite a beginner anymore but was really struggling with my drives, nose up and wasting all my energy throwing at the sky but not being able to translate any suggestions to something that made sense to me. I watched your video today and tried it out tonight and….it worked! It finally made sense to me and I was very encouraged to see my drives going where I wanted. Yay!!
Scott's information is gold. I love what he's doing. I follow everything he does and I can't wait to sign up for his class
OMFG it worked. I have been trying for so long to get the nose down on my throws. I have scoured the internet and have yet to find something that works until now.
Thank u Mr. Stokely
Fun physiology terminology: the nose-up "swivel" he's talking about is called wrist pronation, the opposite of which is supination. You want your wrist to be neutral between the two (or maybe even a smidge supinated..?) - avoid pronating.
Thanks for the tip Scott, this is the first video that has actually improved my game. I will keep tuning in.
Scott it's so much fun watching you compete! Loved your miles long beach video and love all these simple smooth, one-take videos!
Scott every since you took time off too reset and work on your putt game you've excelled!!! I've been watching you play and you're doing it at a high level!!! Your drives look effortless! I like how relaxed you look during your approach! Your putt game is going to start shaving points off every round that you play! You've only gotten better as the season has progressed!!! Much love and respect keep it up brother, your hard work and dedication is definitely paying off big time!!!!
I forgot I'd watched this video and laughed out loud when Scott explained the drill makes you throw cut rollers hard as hell, because that's what I've been doing some of the time since discovering pretty consistent snap most of the time. The problem almost always comes down to a wavy or otherwise not level and smooth pull through at the height of the power pocket (noting that pull through is a whirling shoulder yanking the arm forward, not really a pull).
Throwing putters perfectly straight and flat with tons of spin way farther than without snap. I can finally appreciate why pros use putters as drivers so often.
And Scott: your forehand shot near the end of OTB Skins #59 made me cry it was so brilliant, like it left a trail the way a comet does. Love you, brother.
I’ve been playing disc golf for about 15 years. I’ve watched hundreds of videos trying to figure out nose angle and I think your video explains how to fix it 1000% better than anything I’ve watched. Your videos have helped my game so much. I hope to meet you someday so i can shake your hand. Thank you.
Scott is the only person who can explain things in a way that makes sense!
Never have I seen so many good vibes in a comment section. So much love for this sport. And rock and roll tutorial.
I can't wait to try this. My drive has stalled out at 100ish meters and pretty sure this is the key to unlocking the extra distance
Scott, your explanation of the swivel blew my mind! This is exactly what I’ve been doing wrong. I’ve been twisting my wrist/forearm to try and generate snap on the disc. The way you explained it made me have an insight moment of how I should be pulling through and finishing. Instant game changer for me. Thank you for everything you do!!
this directly addresses the issues I've been having with my drive's. Can't wait to get out there and practice and hopefully gain some distance and SNAP! thx Scott, awesome video as usual!
Scott, I've been playing for a decade, and I'm embarrassed to say I still found this helpful. Thank you.
Definitely turned the light bulb on over my head. You were born to teach!
I'm new to the sport. My first time out was a disaster. Lbvs. I've been watching your videos for about a week, and I've seen major changes to my game. Still have a long way to go, but I really appreciate you and your awesome videos! You earned this subscriber! Thank you
It has been a long cold winter in central Indiana for me. I trust your knowledge. Your videos got me throwing backhands. Forehand only for my first 2 years. I will definitely use this information. You give me hope. Thank Scott!
Thank you sr Scott Stokely I always look forward to the nuggets of wisdom you share! Congrats on the skins match, truly Awsome! I have a few more years under my belt and realize how much more difficult it is to pick up new skills or modify old ones and on more than 1 occasion you were able to make me understand where others have failed. I am graetfull to you for taking the time and putting forth the effort to share the knowledge you have in such abundance. The ability to teach in a manner that people can understand is truly a gift! And you that possess! I just wanted to thank you for all you do! I will be looking forward to your next pearl of wisdom with great anticipation! Utah Rick
watched the skins match and had to come over here to rant about how great it was. even knowing about the thing, seeing the thing in the moment was amazing. congrats, my man!
The exact video I needed, thank you sir
Gonna have to 2nd that. Just in a walk through, it's gold. The drill, the slap in the face. I can even feel my off shoulder propelling the motion.
Mike Strauss talks about supponating and pronating the forearm. Im glad more people are talking about it, hopefully my body will be able to fix this soon.
I’m pretty new to the game and I watched this video on the way to my local course and immediately improved. Didn’t even realize I was swiveling. Thank you Scott!
The backhand slap was the verbal queue that I have been needing! That simple visual helped me more than you know!
Watched this video a few weeks ago when it came out. After the first five minutes I knew I was hearing great insight. Been practicing the visual of my wrist to elbow being parallel with the ground and throwing further than ever! Thank you so much Scott, true legend.
Just used this today… helped me so much. Thank you for keeping things simple to understand and go out and execute.
Thanks Scott, Looking forward to trying this. Been playing Disc golf for only a week. I anticipate this will help me immensely. Thank you again..
Great teaching Scott!
Thanks again Scott for all you do!!
You the man Scott! Thank you. This is the best snap video I have seen.
One of the best I've seen. Love your teaching!!!
Scott, you put on the best tutorial videos, hands down. I’ve seen several of yours and love your enthusiasm and your love for teaching comes through. Oh, also your advice added 75 feet to my distance instantly.
I'm new.. Like I've only thrown two courses new. I'm going to apply this to my practice. It is probably the best how to for someone like me that I've seen on CZcams.
Thanks for the great tips in your videos. Also thanks for the awesome chills inducing performance in the Eagle’s Crossing skins match. Watching you on the green of the 18th hole got me choked up. Learning that your skins winnings is going to charity is such a class act and a great way for Disc Golf to be seen. Hopefully the event becomes an annual thing and each year’s winner follows in your footsteps and plays with a charity in mind.
such a great vid. thanks for all you do my man. This man is a legend and love seeing him pass down his knowledge. true love of the sport.
THANK YOU! Can't wait to go try this! Congrats btw!! Awesome stuff!
Scott, I love you man. Such positive vibes and good spirit.
Thanks Scott!! Super helpful!!!!
I needed this. Good stuff.
Always good to hear something explained using different terms. It's about the details...
This was great a couple of weeks ago I went with a friend for his first time at playing disc golf. I tried to remember some of the basics to let him know how to throw. I couldn't figure out how he wasn't getting the angle he was. This explains it way better than the 3 or 4 other videos I have watched since.
Thanks Scott. I’ll try this out
thank you! this and the recent forehand video has me totally rethinking my throws in a good hopeful way. gained some distance and accuracy already. 👍👍👍 you rock 😎
Just watched the skins match. Not gonna lie. I cried a little with you. And I got a cousin and my nephew that has severe autism. So thanks so much. My nephew will directly benefit from your donation at the school he goes to. It's so hard to keep teacher that can put up with how hard it is to care for them.
really love watching your vids, helped me immeasurably. great skins win too! love from the UK.
8:32. Thats it!!! Why did it take 7 yrs to learn this?
Shocked at how well I just played. What a joy seeing the disc actually fly. When I threw flat the disc really flew as the numbers state. The under stable discs like Shryke and Leopard really turned over. I'll have to start hyzer flipping them to go straight.
Suddenly I'm not afraid of over stable discs like champ T Bird.
I fully understand how the whip works by the wrist unhinging properly. The pronating wrist stops that. You can actually feel the whip. Insane Scott. Can't thank you enough. I thought at 58yo I'd never get it. Now I've got it!!!.
Thanks so much! Can't wait to hit the course and try these techniques out. Congrats on your skins win, too!
Wow thank you for this! This is exactly what I’ve been needing!
Thanks for the advice Scott. I wrote all this info down because swiveling is a big problem for me after looking at a video of my form. Never would have thought of it!
Thank you!!! Helped sooo much!!!
Alright man. Credit where credit is due. I’m a beginner with maybe 20-30 rounds under my belt. I’ve watched handfuls if CZcams videos and have had minimal to decent results. The advice in this video about slapping someone with a a back hand has completely changed my game. I’m throwing flatter and getting an extra 100 ft out of my discs. Out of all the advice I’ve gotten has paled in comparison to that one simple tip. Thank you for spelling that out. I saw your video last week and played tha last two days with info in my head and my game has improved tremendously in just one week with that back hand tip. Amazing work.
Good stuff Scott. I'm going to try this. It makes a ton of sense.
Just rewatched this video and I’ll probably watch it again! Best advice I’ve found on throwing nose down!
Hi Scott! Great video. Just wanted to let you know this is the first video ever that has actually helped me with my game and worked the FIRST TIME I tried it. The backhanded slap pre routine before I throw instantly made me release flat consistently, it made me throw straighter where I aim and it actually added about 10 feet to my throws as well. Really glad you shared this ⭐️
You’re a gifted teacher. Thank you for making it make sense!
Ok you sold me. Signed up for some lessons and learning. Looking forward to it!
Firstly, to say an "outstanding performance" at the Big Money Skins match would be an understatement. I hope your win there shows that you are still capable of hanging with the young guns, and gives you relief and comfort knowing that going forward this season! A simply magnificent performance from a true legend.
Second, thank you again for some of the most informative coaching videos out there! Your knowledge and passion for the sport are truly shown in each video. Keep 'em coming, brother!
I ve been playing for 12 years, got my rating up to 980 at some point, won a national championship once and some other tournaments, but i was never able to consistantly break 400. I just did some practice swings while watching this video and i swifel, every time! Can't wait to go out on the field tomorrow and try this.
Had my first bogey free round cause your video let me disc down and throw flat consistently on my mids. The French slap was the trick for me, added 50 ft to my mid, can’t wait to try it with fairways next time. Really appreciate how many tips you jammed into this as so many 1 size fits all weren’t working for us new players.
That was very helpful! Thanks. 🙏
This is the best explanation I've ever heard about throwing flat. Awesome! And thank you!
Scott you are awesome man. Thank you so much for this information. You have such a great way of explaining things and you have changed how i look at the mechanics of disc golf and im easily twice the player i was i went from being an over par player to several shots under par player consistently thanks to you.
Wow I’ve been haveing a problem with nose up and I’ve been cranking 350-450 this made alota since wonder what I’ll get now ready to go pratice at the nearest field thanks a lot!
Scott is the best. I can't wait to practice this in the field asap.
I'll try this. Thanks! You can tell this guy has got a lot of experience by him breaking it down to the little things like the difference between naturally letting your wrist snap versus forcing it
JUST what I needed to see!
Yes! Very helpful! Thanks!
can't wait to get to work on this drill!
Great video, awesome to have a mission for the next field practice.
Even though i don't consider myself to commonly have a nose up issue, it happens and this wisdom will bring awareness to limit it even further!
Brilliant as always. You need to be a long term pro like Scott to explain how simple it is to bring your form to the next level. Even better to fix bad habits in an easy way. 🙏
The entire time I never thought of it as slapping someone! Very clever! That clicked right away!
Amazing tutorial! Thank you Scott, you are an amazing teacher. I got my nose down in about two seconds once you pointed out the follow through… can’t believe it was that easy.
Love the drill Scott.... great 💡
Thanks Scott! It's still a work in progress but this video has helped me a lot
Thank you for doing this
Comment for the algorithm! Gonna try this tomorrow, thanks! ⛳️
You sir have just earned my subscription
This makes so much sense. I can't wait to try this out
If I could recommend just one video to a new or learning disc golfer, this would be it. Thanks a million, Scott!
Such good & easy tips !!!
