THANK YOU ShadowFoxBih!! I've been waiting for somebody to do the GRE!
I hope you enjoyed the video and found value in it!
THANK YOU ShadowFoxBih!!
These benchmarks are very surprising. That card is definitely efficient and the cooling is impressive. Much appreciation to Shadow for providing the card so you could review it! 🎉
Yes, I was very impressed with the colling capabilities of the 7900 GRE PowerColor Hellhound.
7900 GRE is same price as 7800 xt in my country and some other countries. it is a good deal
Yes.

Loved the review! TY Shadow!
Thank you 🙏 and yeah Shadow is awesome!
Man, your videos are top quality, wish you the best
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
That card looks "thin" by today's standards; so, very surprised with the great cooling performance! And, great review, very clean... other YTers could learn a bit from your videos :) Keep up the great work!
Very kind of you to say! Thank you! I was surprised by the cooling of the card for sure.
Thanks for covering this card. Im still debating lol
No problem! Thanks for watching! Lol, man you gotta upgrade!
Get it bro its so worth it i just got the hellhound and it is sooo goood
Great video! I’m still debating between the 7800, 7900 GRE, and the 7900XT when it comes to the TDP. I have a 220W GPU and was looking to upgrade but I want to keep the same PSU (750W). I know the 7800 (263W) and the 7900 GRE (260W) should be able to handle it. But if I’m aiming for the 7900XT (315W) it’s not looking so good. I get mixed information that a 750W is enough, or you need a 850W.
The only reason I would be aiming for the top 1440p card is because I upgraded to a R7 5700X3D and want to pair it with the best card my PSU can handle.
Any thoughts?
you can power a 7900xtx on a 750w psu, it will only use up to 350w at stock give or take, the 7900gre and below are even lower at 263 watts
the main reason they even recommend 750w or 850w in the first place is because people buy god-awful power supplies that can't even do 450w out of its advertised 750w rating, especially on crappy Apevias and the like.
you won't have issues powering any gpu on your 750w psu assuming its a good model and internal OEM.
Your 750w is fine.
@@BodethIII 100% facts. I would (and do!) run TOP QUALITY 650w PSUs above no name or half name 800+ models. PSUs are all about the quality. They are the most important component in your entire PC build, and indeed the rest of them live or burn based only on that PSU choice. Literally. So many people skimp out of them, or just go for bigger numbers. Big mistake!
When you ran Helldivers 2 what sampling did you use? The native? or ultra super sampling?
Native.
First time building a PC what would be a better combo, using the MicroCenter CPU bundles, a Ryzen 7800X3D with 7900 GRE ($1080) or Ryzen 7700X with 7900 XT($1120). Mostly gonna try to hit 4K or Ultra 1440P on a 4K 144 hz monitor. Also plan to use the PC for work if required if that makes a difference in choosing the CPU. Thoughts?
For your use case, use the second option. 7700x and 7900XT.
@@ErockOnTech I appreciate it
@@ErockOnTechhello may I get you opinion on my build
Thanks for the video. Call me crazy, but I’m debating between 6950xt and 7900gre. Price to performance I feel like 6950xt is better. Am I wrong? Would I be doing myself a disservice by going with the older gen card? Building for first time in 10 years 😅
It's a good benchmark! To set yourself apart from the crowd, I think something that could carve out a niche for you would be testing minecraft with shaders and 32 render distance on java which is what no other regular youtuber does at the moment as far as I know except Jansen Benchmarks (and he uses bedrock minecraft which isn't as popular)
I’ll take this into consideration. Thanks for sharing this. If I do Minecraft, which one specifically is relevant?
@@ErockOnTech Java minecraft is by far the most popular because it is the most moddable even though the performance isn't quite as good as Bedrock. Something like Complementary Shaders and PTGI shaders are ones to base benchmarks on.
I can give more details later, but I'm trynig to get ready for a family get-together.
@@ofon2000No problem! I appreciate the feedback!
How would this compare to my 6700xt I’m looking to upgrade
I got the 7800XT and paired it with a 5800X3D 32 GB of CL 14 Ram.Question did you try overclocking the graphics card of the 7900GRE wondering?
It's currently locked. AMD said it was a "bug" and will be unlocking it for overclocking "soon."
Currently most models past the reference are already clocked as high as they can be
No. As I said in the video, there is a bug related to the overclocking for the GRE. AMD has said they are working on a fix for it. So that is why I didn’t try to overclock it.
thanks for review. I will buy 7900 GRE for my PC with Quest 3 VR. I need 16GB VRAM ... and Nvidia option is way more expensive(4060 super or TI). I believe that VR game doesn't even support Ray Tracing so I will choose AMD Radeon path.
I am still kind of puzzled between 7800XT and 7900 GRE as you explain in this video..
It would be almost same to my situation.. so I will buy whatever options I actually have in Micro Center in Dallas, TX. :)
Hi there, i have powercolor RX6700 Red devil version, im playing single player games and always use vertical sync, yes im wierd. I play everything on 60 fps. So im deciding to go for rx 7900 gre (powercolor). Im afraid of some mining boom or something. So want to get something powerfull. Do i stay calm and wait for future generation gpu or buy today. Im happy with my RX6700. I dont know what to do. Wait or buy :(
My honest opinion is don’t waste the money. What I mean is the GRE is a great GPU if you need one. But if you’re happy with your current gaming experience, then why spend the money?
Thanks Shadow
love hearing the stream beats music from harris heller
LETS GO!!
Whoohoo!
Obviously it's meant for 1440p but this is still a very solid 4k card
Can you please tell us the hotspot temps while gaming ?
I’m sorry I missed that. I’ll consider that for future AMD GPU reviews. Thank you 🙏
Got mine a few days ago....so damn good; WAY more performance than I expected. Not sure what qualifies as being a '4k card' if ultra settings and 60-120 fps isn't sufficient? Just don't enable RT! Also, just install the drivers in minimal mode... the Adrenalin software is pretty amazing feature-wise, but holy shit they crippled my system after 2 days....black screens, restarts, games crashing on launch. Insane instability after 2 decades of relatively smooth sailing with nvidia.
is 7600x cpu enough for this? im eyeing this over the 4070 super!
yes it is
Question, is this gpu enough for a 4k with fsr, high settings, 60fps experience?
not really, the average is around 40-50 fps on normal titles and the more demanding it gets the worse these gpus perform . Unfortunately nvidia's dlss is better than amd's fsr , so games on 4k run at better framerate than amd (with dlss). If you exclude dlss or fsr , then both at this price range dont go for 60 average except if you lower the settings (assuming high settings means high shadows , textures and all of the good stuff). I would recommend 1440p maxed out gaming with these cards than 4k for the performance and the stability since at 4k they stutter a bit . And lets be honest , for 600 bucks you are not getting good experience 4k , if you want it then go for the 4090 or rx 7900 xtx , etc.
EDIT: in most games at high settings you can infact get 60 fps average at 4k , but it also depends on the game and if the GRE is overclocked or not . If overclocked then it can easily do its job at 60fps high settings but forget ultra . On the other hand nvidia dlss can run even ultra at around 80-90 fps on some of the more powerful gpus that cost like 50 dollars more.
GREat review. GREat value.
Thank you!
GREat comment!
0:06 does anyone know what case that is?
Grabbed it 2 weeks after launch for £480 and came with (RE4) a game for my steam account. I had been holding off upgrading my 6700xt knowing Nvidia would never drop their prices to realistic for what you get. I was offered £300 for my year old 6700xt just after this launched here (Scotland) so I sold it the minute we had an offer for the 7900GRE below mrsp and the game coupon. So I was out of pocket £180 and I have been floored. It is paired up with a Ryzen 5 7600 and it is stellar. I only play in 1440p but could 4K if I wanted but that is pointless as this is just a gaming rig and I am so far off being hardcore that I play games that even the 6700xt was too much for. I just want the padding in case something comes out that isnt crap and requires a bit more from the GPU. Palworld, Elden Ring and Helldivers 2 do not ask that much from my hardware 🤣
so can I expect 4k 60 on high settings for most new AAA games?
High? Possibly yes. Ultra probably not. But AMD just released the over clocking update. The GRE is a LOT better now.
Shoukd i do 7 7700x with 7900 GRE/ 4070 super
Or 7800x3d with 7900GRE/ 4070 super what would u recommend
depends on the price . If you can find the 7 7700x for around 250 its worth it over the normal 7 7700 at 220ish . If not then the 7800x3d is great at around 300-350 but remember , both are great and dont bottleneck the gpus . On the other hand if you want to do 3d editing and want to utilize the cores to the max , go for the more expensive but better performance cpu. Also google has you covered with the abilities of each one. If you have the money then get the more expensive , if not it doesnt make a huge difference . (and dont forget , the ryzen 7 7700x is a ryzen 7 7700 but with higher voltage , so you could still get the normal 7 7700 and get the same performance as the 7 7700x , the only thing is that they dont give you a stock cooler and you get like 0.2 less ghz for the cores ).
@@allex975gaming sounds good and appreciate the help
I noticed the 14900K has a higher percentage use when gaming at 1440p ultra compared to 4K ultra.
ShadowfoxBih is 🗿 I needed a benchmark to compare it against 4070 ti :D
I know it’s a bottle neck, but would the 7800xt or 7900GRE be better for me ryzen 5 5500? And what 650w or 700w would anyone recommend??
depends on the price , if the 7800xt costs at least 30 dollars less then take it , from what i see a 7 percent increase for the gre isnt that great since they perform almost the same . Now i dont understand what you mean by 650w or 700w , but if you are asking about a PSU wattage then get at least a 700w minimum , because these cards alone waste around 300w and including the other components of the pc it would be close to 600 if not more . Also make sure you get a power efficient psu at that price so you dont waste energy as much.
Seems to me that if you take CP77 and Alan Wake out... which most people would... this is actually a 4k entry card.
I game at 4K on my personal rig. I have a 4090 and I’m fine. But back when I had a 4080, there were a few times I was a bit disappointed with the 4K performance. But it depends on what someone views as acceptable fps at 4K I guess. Also, game optimization is a huge factor these days. I don’t own Alan Wake. I won’t pay for it on the Epic Game store. I try not to buy games from there. If I didn’t include CyberPunk in my benchmarks people would complain lol. In fact, in the past they did complain lol 😂
But I completely get what you’re saying. The GRE is certainly capable of 4K in some games for sure.
Ready to buy a gre, was gonna buy a 4070 but it seems the gre gets the same performance as a 4070ti for the same price as a 4070.
Not to mention better Rasterization and 4 extra gbs of vram over the 4070 Only thing the 4070 has going for it is better ray tracing and the dlss 3 but that introduces some input lag
I think you REALLY should have compared the Ray Tracing against the 7800XT (but I'm guessing you don't own that card, so using someone else's number would have been fine in this case... for me.. maybe using Hardware Unboxed numbers would have been acceptable... but running your own benches on the GRW :) ) because of the the TON of extra CU's compared to the 7800XT ... The RT performance is a MUCH larger increase compared to the 7800XT than the rasterization increase, and I REALLY think that counts for something..... I would say this is AMD's best 'bang for buck' RT card, which is saying A LOT lol..... I just hope they get those new drivers and unlock the OC capability of the GRE.... if they do before summer starts I'm gonna toss my 6650XT and get this beauty..... BUT if they don't I'm just gonna go with the high end 8000 series, which is rumored to be a bit faster than the XTX at about half the price (if you didn't already hear, the 8000 series isn't going to have a 'high end' .. like the RX 480 family of cards.... so AMD is going for VALUE while they work the kinks out of the MCM design, and pump up the RT performance for RDNA 5/9000 series) - So the value of the GRE is just a little taste of what RDNA4/8000 will be like... which I think is GREAT for the economic situation right now :)
I don’t own the 7800 XT, 7900 XT, or the GRE. All 3 cards were loaned to me by my subscribers/Patreon members. I wanted to be mindful of their time and get the cards back in a timely fashion. I did save the GRE for last as I was hoping the driver update would have released by now. But sadly not. In case you didn’t know, I do have reviews on the channel for the 7800 XT and 7900 XT as well. I heard briefly that AMD wasn’t doing the high end for the 8000 series. I wasn’t sure if it was official yet or not. Thank you for the information!
you really like that red t-shirt xD
It’s part of the brand! 😎
the card can do 4k on high settings also if you guys want to know
its simple for me 16gb , class and best value - The question is 6800/XT or GRE in my opinion
every time AMD release something its not on stock, instead i bought a white palit 4070 ti super gaming pro, love it so far, rock stable
Oh you mean it’s not in stock in your area?
7800 XT or 7900 GRE and which cpu to pair with it
Pair it with a 7800X3D. 7800 XT is better value.
@@ErockOnTech Thanks a lot bro
@@ErockOnTechany cheaper cpu cuz here in India 7800x3d is way too expensive
@@vardhan8995Check for the 7700X.
So how come tech reviewers rarely ever use the cheapest version of a card for benchmarking? Like yeah we should know what the best card can do but i think it would be more beneficial for people to know what the cheapest variant would be able to accomplish like ASRock i think usually has the cheapest variant.
Tech CZcamsrs use whatever is sent to us. A subscriber sent me this card. I didn’t get to choose it.
Shadowfox for the win!
I know right!
Pls show rpm, it wouldnt matter if the card would scream out of your pc to get good temperatures
I beg to differ. If a card is screaming, I don’t want it personally. But to each their own. According to the website, if the temperature is below 60c, the fans don’t spin. Here is a link for reference. www.powercolor.com/product?id=1704700346
If you have added a 4070s to this review it would have been a perfect comparison
I would have if I had a 4070 Super. Sadly, I don't. I'm working on it.
Can i pair with 7 5700x at 1080p?
yes , a ryzen 7 5700x is good enough for a 4070 and an RX 7900xt so it should work fine . It has 8 cores with good speed so it shouldnt cause much of an underperformance. BUt as a general rule of thumb , the better the cpu , the better the performance of the gpu . For example a Ryzen 7 7800x3d will outperform the one you recommended but the difference isnt much in terms of fps . I personally havent used the 7 5700x but from the looks of it (the specs) it should perform fine . It also depends on the motherboard since we are talking about a higher end gpu with an AM4 chipset motherboard which usually is slower than a AM5 motherboard . You should do some research about the specifics and then decide . But if you want a graphics card to pair with then get a 7800xt . It should perform the same as the 7900GRE at that point.
Bro thank you for your time to response.
I was thinking to get the 7800xt anyways but after your message i'm sure 7800xt will be next gpu not gre or another one.
When the manufacturer ships a card overclocked, it's not an overclock.
Yes it is. You, yourself are not overclocking it by owning it and using it, but it is still an overclock for that chipset.
Shadowfox!!!!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
I know right!!
RPM ?
Sorry I didn’t overly track that. I can tell you this though. I used the OC switch on the card. I left all settings in Adrenaline Software set to default. I made no changes. And according to the PowerColor website, if the temperature is below 60c, then the fans don’t spin. As you see in my benchmarks, the GPU never hit 60c. Here is the link for reference. www.powercolor.com/product?id=1704700346
This card holds 1,100 RPM and is near inaudible at 100% load. If you start to hear the fans or the speed increases, it may be time to remove dust. The thermal and acoustic performance of this Hell Hound edition Power Color are both extremely good!
@@KenjiFox Thx

Where are all the nice GRE cards? Strix, red devils, nitros etc.
Everything ive seen for sale is ugly entry level models.
Good question. I’m not sure when or if the other AIB partners will release a GRE.
it's kinda a meh product. Had it been "released" at $500 then it would have been fine and the 7800xt bumped down. the AIB models here cost as if not more than the 4070 super. The value proposition kinda is absent with AMD in the 7000 series.
Yeah it’s market dependent for sure. I’m sorry I forget. You’re in Canada right?
this is the best thing to buy in eastern eu, costs 130-170$ less than 4070TI and 4070TI Super for same raw performance.
@@ErockOnTech yup, it's Canada. hellhound model is $100 above what should be the MSRP and the steele legend is also $50 above as well. Only the gigabyte model is around msrp but I heard it's the one of if not the worst models quality wise.
