Just a bit of trivia, there was another game at home after opening game of Jack's era against Wales at Lansdowne Rd. In April 1986 against Uruguay. Gerry Daly scored for us in a 1 - 1 draw. Mark didn't play in the Uruguay game so I suppose he didn't travel to Dublin for it. Next games were the Triangular tournament in Iceland in late May '86. RIP Jack.

The point Lawro references at 1:53 isn't quite as clear cut as he makes out. Quite the reverse in fact.
The FAI panel had reduced a shortlist of applicants to a final, "unchangeable" 3; Johnny Giles, Liam Tuohy and Jack Charlton. On the day of voting it is announced by the FAI President Des Casey that a new candidate has emerged. Casey won't name his source* but the panel is informed that Bob Paisley is up for the job.
There is uproar as the panel has already agreed the final 3... but then it is Bob Paisley we're talking about. Eventually Paisley is accepted into the new shortlist of 4. For voting purposes the candidate needs 10 of the initial 18 votes. With a final 19th and deciding vote being cast by Casey in the event of a tie.
Paisley gets 9 votes and the other candidates get 3 apiece. So one candidate is eliminated and it's Tuohy. If the other 9 votes had instead gone to just one of the other three candidates Des Casey would have cast a deciding vote and it is clear he wanted Paisley.
In the next round of voting Paisley again gets 9, Charlton gets 5 and Giles 4. So Giles is eliminated. It's clear at this point that even if Charlton gets all of Giles's votes then Paisley will get the 19th deciding vote. Here's where things get murky. Someone who had voted for Paisley seems to have switched allegiance and the 4 votes that went to Giles all go to Charlton. So big Jack emerges with the 10 votes needed to get the job.
*I believe the source was someone with a close connection to Paisley and someone who had previously discussed the job with Casey. What many people don't know is that Mark Lawrenson was one of those who had applied for the job but didn't make the shortlist. His connections to Paisley are obvious. I think he was the source.

If you understand the Ashington(Northumberland) community mentality where Jack came from you will understand the no nonsense, no frills attitude that Jack had
