Yes, absolutely... the local accent is unique and distinct... For instance, when Mr George Yeo speaks in perfect English to an international audience, his accent sounds very Singaporean... Thus, I can expect many Westerners would find it a bit of a problem to comprehend... lol... 😊

From what my dad told me, during his time, they're mainly speaking Malay and their own native languages. When the government introduced English as the main official language, there's was a whole generation of non-English speakers trying to cope with the new transition so they do what they do best by incorporating the English nouns into their native language structures and vice versa E.g. For Chinese, the English usually follows the Mandarin structure e.g. "你 you 吃 eat 了嗎 already?" or "吃 eat 什麽 what" and what makes it efficient is that Mandarin doesn't have past tense/past participles etc. e.g. "昨晚 Last night 你 you 去 go 哪 where?". 🤣 Add in the various words from various communities/races, you get Singlish.
Singaporeans code-switch between proper English and Singlish, depending on occasion and company.... some westerners think Singlish is like a real other language. LOL. Its just a lazy way of jumbling up chinese/malay/tamil words and drop some adverbs and connections. Whatever gets the message across in the most simplified way, evolved from multi-cultural heritage when mostly uneducated labourers from all parts of Asia came together here... the lah/leh/lor/meh are expressions and not words, just to express 'of course', "what else", "i don't have a choice..." at the end of a sentence with just a single tone. :)
I didn't understand anyone when we lived there whether they tried to speak Queen's English or Singlish. Code switching makes little difference. Singaporeans are just very hard to understand. I can identify a Singaporean in a crowd of 1 million at Time Square. They have this very distinctive way of pronouncing English words.

English is belonging to a worldwide language, not only US or UK, the necessary to reset it into an international language and reset it as a standard English with one acent and one standard. Native speaker has to be relearning in school for later communication in bussiness world or in an education institution with foreign students. The fact that I preferred to do bussiness with Germany as their English is easier to understand.

Even in the US,different states speak differrent accent english,same goes to China, I would say most if not all americans understand singlish,getting 50% of content is gd enough… Matter of metric and inches,not as if its a completely different language.
Krazy Koala, I suspect that you have made quite a few "enemies" by posting this video. Singaporeans are very sensitive to people laughing at their poor English. I was a professor at NUS for over 17 years and my students liked me a lot until one day I inadvertently made fun of their English in class.
Krazy Koala is obviously is a Chinese American, just like Mikey Chen. She probably was born and raised by immigrants from China in San Francisco, and therefore her mother tongue is probably Mandarin. But She speaks English well, much better than Singaporeans, even though she has a bit of a Chinese accent.

But I guess the very least she can do is just to simply acknowledge that her accent is not a typical American accent that's all. It is misleading from the clickbait when she says her English is American when it clearly isn't 💯 so. I just don't see why it's so difficult to say "I am American, while English is my first language, I admit I also do not sound American for reasons that I choose not to disclose". Kids born after 2010 in Singapore also now speak with neutral to American sounding accents these days thanks to CZcams/Tik tok. Very different from their parents. Every country has exceptions...just like how there are Americans like KK who don't sound fully American. Similarly there are Singaporeans who don't sound Singaporean too. And that's perfectly ok Imho, if KK really wants more subscribers/followers..maybe she should do a comedy about her own lack of American accent instead, this will blow up...I don't mean this in a bad way....nothing beats the good old self-deprecating humour for more views/likes. In fact it makes for a very interesting talking point especially among viewers with Linguistics backgrounds.
