The linguistic minorities always lose out. Tacitus said that the language of the concurrer in the mouth of the concurred is the language of the slave. I did a tour at a park in the US for some Uzbeks. Only two spoke Uzbek. Russian was the language of success.

Also, reading novels or news or whatever in french, reading out loud i mean, every day, helps a lot. I personnally read novels in english. Some years ago... living in London I strangely switched to my mother tongue German, in a restaurant. The waitor replied in German - he was from Denmark 😂😅

Es ist interessant, dass keiner von befragte kann Deutsch.
Aber wenn er mich fragen wurde, Ich bin auch beantworten dass kann spreche Deutsch nicht! 😀
Until WW II German was the first foreign language spoken in Denmark. It was used by the nobility, businesses and the establishment. The Royal family spoke German. This changed after the war to English when anti-German sentiments were particularly high and it wasn’t cool to speak German. King Frederik the Ninth (king from 1947 to 1972) mother was German princess but he married a Swedish princess who spoke Swedish and English.
I learned German in school, but only speak it on an A2 -B1 level.
However, during the last three decades English has cemented its position as the first foreign language in Denmark. A lot of young people almost speak it on a native level.
But German is still taught and many of the older generations speak it very well. Therefore it’s not surprising that this waiter was able to respond in German.
It's just a pity some people don't speak their parents' languages.
ive asked my parents about it and from their perspective you come back home from work tired and its tough to have to start teaching another language to a kid thats been learning english all day when other stuff needs to get done. its doubly difficult if the language isnt spoken by many people so there isnt a duolingo course or anything

These experiences of yours are truly enchanting, and I can learn a lot from you through virtually traveling, meeting new people and so forth. I appreciate all you've done on your channel for us lately.
I'm so happy to hear there’re people who love or learn Japanese as a Japanese😊
advantages of anime
I originally learned Japanese because I loved the English translations of Haruki Murakami's books - the prose in it is very beautiful. But now that I can read his books in Japanese, I discovered that that's due to the skill of the translators! It's a different experience reading him in English versus reading him in Japanese. An added benefit is that I can now watch anime that isn't subbed.
And I'm similarly happy to know that there are polyglots.😊

Nice job Dan, please keep this series up! 🐢
I hate when people say that they speak another language and they're like stuck on A2. That's not "speaking". I never say that I speak German or Swedish because I understand them and speak them on A2. Speaking is B2 or B1.2 (and of course C1, C2), below is just not speaking, it's understanding.
Totally agree
You're right! Had a friend learning French for 3 years at school. Asked her then, whether she would be able to count in French from 1 - 100? No!
Quite honestly, it's a mindset like yours that make people afraid to try and speak in a foreign language.
@@LordHorst He's right though, knowing a language at a basic level (like A2) is nice for your personal self esteem and it's better than not knowing another language at all, but it would be delusional to think that such a level is anywhere near sufficient to actually communicate with people in a country that speaks it. You can order food in a restaurant in their language but as soon as they have a single question about your order you won't understand a word and they will have to switch to English, if they speak it.
I agree but Lord Horst also has a point though.
Great work man, these videos are very interesting, keep going. ❤

Hi! Great videos! Keep going. When it comes to languages, I love learning them. So currently I speak fluently Azerbaijani, Russian, English, Italian and Turkish. Used to be fluent in Swedish but after not practicing it for a long time have forgotten a bit.
I used to live in London. Before moving from Japan to England, I had a basic understanding of English, but I struggled to speak the language fluently due to my limited vocabulary. During my two-year stay in London, I made many friends and managed to reach a C1 level in English. Now, I am proud to say that I can speak five languages. London, despite the negative opinions held by some, is an incredible city filled with opportunities. I genuinely loved living there because of its diverse population and the exposure to various cultures. I truly love London:))))

C1 means you get band 7 for IELTS and 100 for TOEFL. How did you make it in 2 years? It sounds incredible. My English was only B2 when I came to Britain to study last year, but I felt it's very difficult to improve from B2 to C1.

Good to see you finally found someone who spoke farsi
Which is actually Persian, not farsi. Farsi is the arabic word. Parsi is the persian word.
It's quite interesting to see how (not always, but generally speaking) most people who said they only speak one language they're actually English. Sometimes we complain in Academia it takes non-native English speakers much more time to read and process a paper than an actual native speaker, but most of them are not even aware (or worse, they refuse to acknowledge) how much easier it is for them due to the fact the the bulk of the literature is in English, most important conferences are in English, and so on and so forth. It is also interesting it seems most of the non-native speakers, in addition to making the effort to learn English, they also find time to learn a third, fourth language.
The snobby world of Academia doesn’t appreciate foreign languages and non-native English speakers who can speak more than one… What a bunch of tossers. 🤦🏻♂️

It's not that English people are lazy at learning languages many of us just can't be bothered and would rather learn other necessary skills to be able to have good job prospects
I think it's more that English people don't need to learn other languages for careers etc. however if you come from somewhere overseas then learning it is beneficial if you want to go to either the UK or USA for work or to live. I'm from the east of England and also didn't find the language lessons at school were particularly engaging, but I think its because learning extra languages aren't essential for us, especially if you don't plan on working or living abroad and even then you can still use English in a lot of other countries because it's sort of an international language.
