Better to work in Singapore or USA? (Working Culture Comparison)
Living in Singapore is undoubtedly amazing. I enjoy my life in Singapore so much.
Working is also a big part of our life. Almost 1/2 of our day is spending at work. Understanding the working and office culture can allow us to work more efficiently.
There are differences of working in Singapore and the United States: office culture, how we communicate with coworkers, long working hours vs. work life balance, lunch culture, etc. Working is such a big part of our life every day. My philosophy is to work smart and strike for work life balance.

This is so entertaining to watch! I used to feel guilty going out for lunch because everyone ate at their desk, but I needed that midday break to get some fresh air and enjoy my lunch away from my work 😁 I love that about Singapore work culture. Although I think they would be frustrated because I take more than a day to reply back to my emails haha thanks for this video! Loving the twice a weekđŸ„°

oh hahaha. your company is also "eating at the desk" culture LOL..... i also enjoy taking a walk outside for fresh air. TBH, now I'm getting slower on emails than before LOL.... but it's still much faster than IG or FB. I feel i'm mainly on YT lol...... The 2X a week thing is getting me very stressed... don't know how to manage it, because i want to be able to upload on Friday night because that's the most active night on YT. Not i'm not sure if i can make the deadline LOL

Nice review, made me smile lol. I was out of the office for a while once and someone sent me an email that needed actioning very shortly; I saw that person few times out and about and they saw that I was a bit stuck and couldn’t get back to the office and that person did not say a thing to me. By the time I got back to the office the time to take the action was lay so I simply replied, ‘just got back to the office now.’ The other one was in and Architectural Practice that I used to work. My Colleague next to me send me email to ask a simple question and all he had to do was just to talk and I would have heard him. We literally sit next to each other.

Indeed, Whatsapp is big here. In fact, it has become intrusive because people msg each other about work even after the working hour. And because it is instant messaging, they expect almost instant reply. The Out-of-Office thing depends on the manager you work with. Nice video!

From my experience in Singapore, my colleagues usually don't disturb me when I am on leave, even if they do send you messages, you still have an option not to reply. It depends on the company, your position etc. This problem arises is when the company tries to get more things done with less manpower to maximize their profit detrimental to employees well being such as health and work life balance.

Hilarious and you are absolutely spot on with the disparity with the Work ethics and culture.
There isn't a right or wrong on either side. Bottomline, the task gets done. If you are a foreign staff in either country, you just got to adapt to its work culture.
Of course, work environment can be improve constantly, provided the management and staffs are willing to accept paradigm shift.

interesting video! the work culture in Singapore, in my humble view, is influenced by many factors including and not limited to for instance, type of industry, the peers, the boss, what is permissible and what is not. I'm guessing a big reason for the difference in lunch culture may be that in Singapore you have an abundance of affordable (and not-so-affordable if you are loaded) hawker centers, food courts etc for people to eat with their coworkers? Hence why everyone likes to go out and makan. But I'm surprised that Americans don't take lunch breaks at all. One would think that anyone would relish the chance to get away from work whenever possible.

On lunch hour, it really depends on the type of industry, position and company culture you are in.
On email and WhatsApp, that just because many wants to get decision or action done very fast.
With regards to leave, that is again depending on the industry, company culture and position. I have known many foreign high position executives that frequently attend to matter while on leave.
Your video is light hearted and nice to watch. However, as you mention Singapore, I can't help but to clarify that the comparison is only from the experience you have working in a specific environment, company size and culture dealing with a specific group of people.

The only thing i enjoy about work is having lunch break. If i were to sit at my own desk eating tabao food or reheated food bought outside for quite some days, i would feel quite sad, dry and boring. Because all the time my body is facing my desk with work items around me and I rarely move my butt at all. I like it when my colleague has a car or when we are taking bus out for longer lunch break cuz i get to move out and it would really seem like a break to me 😊 . The last part is like a cassette player playing with the tape off the tape guide
Anyway, back to the topic. I think how we look at our working culture depends on how you view the term "work" personally. For me, I'm teaching elementary school kids.
No doubt, many times I have to resist the temptation to take off my shoe and throw it right at the kids' faces, but I don't because that will be the end of my career.
Bringing work home to be completed is a common thing.
Waking up 6am in the morning is also a common thing.
If you were in my exact same shoes, will you continue your trek on this career path?
If your reply is a "no", then most probably you do not have the passion for handling young kids or in the education sector.
But my reply is a "yes" because I love what I am doing despite what I mentioned above.
It is because I find this passion very fulfilling to be around with kids and seeing them learn new things from time to time. This gives me a great real sense of satisfaction.
So bringing home papers to mark? I'll gladly do it, even if I'm overseas on a holiday.
The reason is that I love my job, and I do not wake up every morning to drag myself to work.
If you are happy working even if it is past your knock-off time, you do not hold this sense of lament in you.
    Something to ponder ;)

Less than few hours before lunch, they will drop 2nd email reminders in the email header, after lunch they will send 3rd email as reminder and before going home they will send a final (4th email reminder) for the queries they asked. The next day, they will start to escalate the email to your boss mentioning that they has been chasing you for updates multiple times at least 4 times.
