  • 1882 SINGER Sewing Machine Restoration
I have long wanted to understand how a sewing machine works. And then, quite by accident, I came across an old rusty sewing machine at a flea market. The seller told me it was made in the late 1940s or 50s, but because of the unusual shape of the base, I guessed it was made much earlier.
Already at home I studied a lot of material on this model of sewing machine. As it turns out, the name of the model is “Singer 12K”. The shaped base is called "Fiddlebase", and according to information from the forums, it is now quite rare to find it on sale.
During the repair process, I found its serial number, and after looking at the official website of Singer sewing machines, I found out the year of its manufacture - 1882.
    Recovery process:
The disassembly stage was quite simple. I then sandblasted most of the parts in the sandblasting booth.
Then all metal parts were primed and painted.
Some parts of the sewing machine were lost or broken and I had to make them.
Overall, working on the sewing machine required the maximum amount of patience from me and took about 14 days, so I would appreciate your feedback in the form of comments and "thumbs up"

I love watching videos like this.
My Father would restore old junk Sewing machines. He was a master.
I would sit and watch him take them apart.
I learned so much about maintaining my own machine's.

Fantastic job you did restoring that old sewing machine from 1882. I have never seen one with a hand crank mechanism such as that before. It looks much better and it works like a charm too. Excellent work.

Generally, I'm not fond of the fiddle base Singer machines, but this worked out nicely. I would like to see how the new set of decals works out for you.
@Jason-7212, I found an old burned out Singer that was destined to be scrapped along with its cast iron base and cabinet. I picked that up for $50 and tore her apart.
I replaced a number of parts that were either damaged or missing and replaced the cabinet with another. The original had 4 side drawers and a central drawer. The replacement cabinet had 6 side drawers and a central drawer. I flocked the interiors, repainted the cast iron and gilded the Singer emblems. I even found the original manual and found a puzzle box which I restored and replaced all the missing accessories.
It was an act of love for the Singer cast iron machines and I have several now in various states of repair and restoration.
I may never get my money back, but I have more than enough satisfaction in knowing that each machine works and I can use them anytime. Treadle machines are a wonder and if you know where to look, can be gotten for cheap.
So all you folks watching this video, remember, you can do this and have one of your own to enjoy and pass on to your children.

Even though it's from eighteen eighty two, the overall condition was great because it was made in america at a time when we used to make things at last. I'm sure it's gonna make a great restore, but thank God. It was made in this country.

Wonderful job! For decals on a dark base, you would need a white layer under the graphic. If you know someone with a white toner laser printer, it would be no problem to print one out for you. I have a CRIO 8432WDT and the images it prints are top notch.

Hello, friend. Ths restoration was fantastic! I'm a little concerned though the second hole for the treadle strap wasn't drilled out on the base. Please see 12:26. Even though this machine is powered by a hand crank, it was originally designed to be used as a treadle operated machine. Perhaps the hole can be drilled out carefully as it only affects the piece of wood used to cover the base that creates the floor of the storage area.

    • @ITBR_Restoration
      @ITBR_Restoration  Před 6 měsíci

Hello! Thanks for watching the video! And for the constructive comment! You're right, it might be worth drilling this hole carefully so that the sewing machine matches the idea of the engineer who developed it.

No bobbin winder? That's why you have the wheel disconnect, so it can turn a bobbin winder without running the machine. I have an 1888 model, maybe a VS2 variant. It's a fiddlebase treadle. When I bought it nearly 50 years ago, it only needed cleaning and lubrication. I've used it ever since. The local Singer repairman carries parts like drive belts and bobbins, as we have an Amish community nearby.

Don't EVER do one of these again. If you can't replicate the finishes that were originally on these items don't mess with these historical pieces. Leave any restoration work to someone who knows what they are doing and can return them to close to their original condition. You DO NO use a sand or heavy abrasive to 'sand blast' one of these things. You powder blast or use walnut or other mild abrasives to start with. Then you have the issue that these machines from that time period either were coated by Japanning or with a baked-on or dipped enamel, not spray painted. These historical pieces are of high value when properly restored, when people like you botch the restoration the value is cut by more than half!

Wow, this machine isn’t particularly valuable and it was saved from being trashed and is able to be used again, a professional restoration, wow give your head a shake, those costs are astronomical for something that’s not that valuable, one in mint condition is probably only a few hundred dollars at best
