  • An incredible restoration. Old, rusty coffee grinder (Suffolk Iron Foundry) from 1920 restored.
    I acquired an old coffee grinder on eBay for €240. The coffee grinder dates back to the year 1920 and has its origins in England. Upon closer inspection, I noticed significant signs of wear and tear: the paint is partially chipped, and the handle is even broken. Additionally, the base on which the coffee grinder stands is considerably damaged.
    Initially, I decided to disassemble the coffee grinder. Since the paint on the metal parts was applied very thickly, I treated it with a stain. After sandblasting, it revealed that the craftsmanship was not particularly good. Therefore, I used a milling machine to refine most parts before applying putty.
    After priming all parts with a powder coating, the red metallic coating followed. To accentuate the intensity of the red metallic color, all parts were finally coated with clear powder.
    I completely recreated the base on which the coffee grinder stood. For this, I used a piece of ash wood from which I cut a suitable board. Using a planing machine, I adjusted it to the correct thickness, added a chamfer to the edges, and sanded the entire piece before sealing it with beeswax.
    The handles of the drawer and the wheel were no longer appealing, so I decided to make new ones. I used a piece of ash wood and crafted them on a lathe. Although I don't own a lathe machine, I managed to create an exact copy of the old handle using a special technique. I placed the piece to be copied on the lathe and traced it with a second chisel.
    I also renewed the heart of the coffee grinder. After sandblasting, I heated it and immersed it in an oil bath to protect the metal from corrosion.
    In the end, I reassembled the entire machine. The result is truly fantastic! I hope you enjoyed the video. Feel free to leave a like and a comment. Until next time - your restorer.

      Transforming isn't restoring. Restoring it would mean bringing it back to how it was originally manufactured, which is certainly not modern. I'm sick of all these "restoration" channels that upgrade things by filing away the imperfections and maker's marks that came from the factory. That's upgrading, not restoring. (I know, if I dislike it, then don't watch it. This popped up and I decided to give it a chance, and I couldn't stop myself from finally ranting. Sorry it happened to be in reply to you, it was just the first comment I saw.) Cheers everybody!

      Of course you can nickel-plate the screws. then they will last longer. To ensure a professional and durable nickel layer, you first have to copper-plate the screws and then nickel-plate them. otherwise the nickel layer will not hold.

    • @MWRestoration
      @MWRestoration  Před 5 měsíci +1

      This is a very good question. You can actually sandblast the entire paint layer. However, it doesn't always make sense to sandblast the color. 1 Some paints are poisonous and carcinogenic, so you should remove the paint with a stain and only then sandblast it. 2 Not all paint colors can be sandblasted; extremely robust powder paints are very difficult to remove. That's why it's quicker to pickle them. 3 I first treated the parts with stain and then sandblasted them because the paint was extremely thick and it was very difficult to remove it.

      He did for some of the parts, where stripping the paint would be impractical, but basically 1) it takes longer to do the sandblasting, and 2) if the paint contains lead, sandblasting it poses a health risk. You don't want airborne pulverized lead in your workshop.

    A few quibbles. The paint will quickly be damaged at the contact point between the axle and the body. The screw securing the flywheel to the axle is probably not original. A darker wood color seems more suitable for this body color. The varnish does not seem to match the style of the era, but this is a matter of personal taste.
    Nevertheless. Great, stylish coffee grinder. A truly wonderful restoration. I'm happy to give you a like.

    Warum kann man das Teil eigentlich nicht gleich sandstrahlen? Die Lackierung vorher zu entfernen ist doch eigentlich unnütze Arbeit, oder?

    • @MWRestoration
      @MWRestoration  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Ihre Frage ist sehr gut. Das Sandstrahlen ist nicht immer die beste Lösung. Wenn die Farbe giftige Bestandteile enthält, sollte man diese abbeizen lassen, damit der Staub mit giftigen Partikeln nicht in der Kabine herumfliegt. Oft wird auch in professionellen Betrieben die Farbe abgebeizt oder chemisch entfernt, selbst wenn die Farbe nicht giftig ist. Das liegt daran, dass die Farbe das Sandstrahlgut zu schnell verschmutzt und verklebt. Das Strahlgut hält am längsten, wenn die Oberfläche, die man sandstrahlen möchte, sauber ist. Für private Nutzer mag das vielleicht nicht so relevant sein, da man für kleines Geld einen neuen Sack mit Strahlgut kaufen kann.
      Allerdings lassen sich extrem harte und dicke Lacke sehr mühsam mit dem Sandstrahlen entfernen. Die beiden Teile, die ich abgebeizt habe, waren sehr dick mit Farbe beschichtet. Das abzustrahlen würde mich sehr viel Zeit kosten. Deshalb habe ich die Teile vorher abgebeizt.

    Why do you do this every time?
    Why don't you restore the old wood too?
    a professional restorer restores everything in front of you , This even includes old wood.
    you are an amateur, your work needs more classes.

    Das ist keine Restaurierung,sondern eine Verschandelung.Farbe entspricht nicht dem Alter,dann wird vorher alles verspachtelt...🤮

    Anybody else to skip right to the end to enjoy climax of the restoration? I have no time for patience for all the work and the energy put into it. I need constant content in quick 5 to 10 second segments so I quickly can get on to the next experience. One after another in rapid succession. If I don't get a steady stream of instant gratification my whole world falls apart. Anyways keep the content coming I got to quickly switch over to another app that lets me absorb everything in real time.
