Antique leather machine - Restoration

  • Welcome to today's video where you saw the renovation of an old Landis special leather cutting and sanding machine sent to us by Mr. Robert Jan Trügg, Thank you.
This machine was used to produce and process leather.
Widely used in the past for various purposes, such as the production of leather goods, repair and restoration of old pieces of leather, as well as for the manufacture of shoes.
The leather machine was equipped with various tools and mechanisms that allowed the leather to be processed. These included, for example, sewing machine knives, pressing machines and other specialized tools.
These devices allowed artisans and manufacturers to work with leather and create various products with high precision and quality.
As man developed, so did the use of leather. In some cultures, leather was considered a symbol of high status, and the leather craft became highly sought after throughout the world.
It was used in everyday life and was primarily oriented towards function.
    Its production began to grow.
Shoes, belts, hats, bags, gloves, harnesses, tents, jewelry and others were produced.
For example, the oldest leather shoe was found in an Armenian cave and is estimated to be 5500 years old.
An interesting fact is that even in China they used leather to make leather armor, which was made from both cowhide and rhinoceros and buffalo hide.
In the 18th century, leather experienced an industrial revolution, and nowadays the demand is very high, so artificial leather and synthetic leather material are also entering the market.
And that's all for today's video.

I agree! Plus there are so few real restoration channels! I’m so tired of the channels that have clearly purposefully ruined stuff just to “restore it”

@@Mountain_Man Many, if not most will do what the client wants. Often that is to make a pretty display without a care for the originality of the piece. You can't blame the restorers for wanting to see a profit for their work.

What always amazes me with these older items is how rough the milling and machining were. We are so used to modern machines and very tight tolerances. So when you see bore holes with rough edges or casting marks and lines you wonder how they even let this get sent out (forgetting our modern biases in such things). And watching how they work so well once restored is relaxing actually.

    • @VeradonaRestoration
      @VeradonaRestoration  Před 7 měsíci +2

Yes, I agree with that, but even if the products were once cast with all the mistakes and irregularities, they were always beautiful and fully functional in the final. Thank you Walter :)

This is my first Veradona video on YT, and by chance I am from St Louis, Missouri, USA, same as this Landis Machine!
In further coincidence, I spent my childhood in gymnastics and sleep-away summer camp with Sokol, a then Czechoslovakian, now Czech organization. We would start all of our gymnastics competitions with 3 national anthems, which we were to know by heart: US "Star Spangled Banner", Czech "Kde domov můj", and Slovak "Nad Tatrou sa blýska". When I hear them I tear up, just like I used to!

Good day. Thank you for sharing this insightful and educational video presentation. While watching the initial video where lubrications were sprayed on every moving part I experienced a flashback to the mid 1960’s when we had to repair and recondition mechanical typewriters (while in the US ARMY). Initially the ribbons and rubber rollers were removed and everything was air-blasted to remove paper dust and detritus. Instead of spraying each individual part the typewriters were placed into a tub or trough and liberally doused with kerosene. Once all the keys and other mechanical parts began moving the typewriter was set on an outside shelf and allowed to air dry. Then the real maintenance could begin.
Wishing you and your family a blessed week filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather and restful evenings together. Peaceful greetings from NE Ohio, USA.

Wow, thank you for your story. Repairing typewriters must be really complicated when I imagine the number of parts that a typewriter has... That turned out nice. I have used a cutting/skiving machine but usually the arms on the cutter part are larger. The company that made that one is still in business. They are an expensive machine. Well done.

Yes, you are right, I tried to look for a similar machine on CZcams, but as you say, they all had extended arms, not like mine. But in principle they are probably the same.

I recall seeing old family photo's of this machine. My great uncle, Antonio Elvis, owned one. He came to the USA in 1915 or 16 after losing his entire family in a house fire. He sold the land and bought passage to the United States where he settled in the state of Florida. He bought this Landis model and another Landis machine that sewed. He began accumulating cow hides from a local moo-moo slaughter house. After drying and tanning the hides he made S & M items. His first customers were the local Mayor and his wife, who were said to be into S & M around their house. Soon their prominent friends bought S & M goods too. Word caught on and his business flourished. He became well known for the best Sandals and Moccasins in the county. He expanded to belts, suspenders, harnesses, wallets, purses, etc. He started a new family and prospered until his death is 1967. No one knows what became of his Landis manufacturing tools but guesses are his family sold them.
