  • "Medieval" was written by the prolific Brazilian composer Luiz Bonfa. There isn't much that sounds medieval in the song so one can only speculate what Bonfa was referring to. Maybe it was just something in his mind that represented a scene in a movie from the Middle Ages. He spent years under contract for Paramount and Universal around the time the song was written.
This arrangement is by Byron Fogo and Daniel Estrem performs on guitar.

Thank you for yet another lovely Bonfa rendition. So good to hear it with the clutter of the original 70s arrangement stripped away, revealling the tune's beauty.

Good evening Daniel, well it is a bit after midnight this side of the Atlantic and still raining! The post Christmas and New Year weather here has been dreadful but this surprisingly bright piece of music certainly cheered me up no end.
As you say in your notes this is not very medieval in sound but it sure has a film score feel to the piece. Again I cannot place it to any particular era but it would not have sounded out of place in a western or even southwestern film. Hints of "High Chaparral" or "Bonanza" maybe. Certainly a more Hispanic sound rather than Brazilian. I can almost imagine the last stand at the Alamo or something to do in Old San Antonio against Santa Anna. It is a part of your country I have yet to visit. Arizona and New Mexico being the closest I have come to the "Wild West" The power of music is astounding.
I do hope that you were able to celebrate the festive season and the New Year. Unfortunately I picked up some sort of Stomach bug which meant that while the family were enjoying Roast Turkey I could only manage one tiny triangle of dry toasted bread! Still I always try and take something positive out of things so it meant I was able to start my New Year diet early and I lost 5 pounds in a week!
    Keep Safe and Keep Playing

Thanks Clive! I always value your input. As I was working up the piece I also had that western film feeling. After seeing your western-leaning opinion I think I'll put the song in the cowboy music playlist rather than the latin category. You may recall Bonfa's "Golden Trail" placed under cowboy music...The feeling is more like it than say, Bonfa's "Saudade Vem Correndo"
but on the other hand there's the Villa Lobos Prelude 1 motif woven into the matrix. Bonfa was a man of two continents. I know, I'll put it under both Latin and Cowboy music...
I hope you're feeling better soon
