- Daniel Estrem performing "Greensleeves to a Ground" a set of 16 variations credited to Anonymous. This setting is published for flute accompanied by guitar and adapts well as a lute duet for renaissance lute and archlute
from Wikipedia:
There is a persistent belief that Greensleeves was composed by Henry VIII for his lover and future queen consort Anne Boleyn.[5] Boleyn allegedly rejected King Henry's attempts to seduce her and this rejection may be referred to in the song when the writer's love "cast me off discourteously". However, the piece is based on an Italian style of composition that did not reach England until after Henry's death, making it more likely to be Elizabethan in origin.[6]

@@danbluedeer I don't know how to speak English, but if I write to you with the translator, you are a teacher, your music is exquisite and healthy.
I love how you keep on making these videos despite not having many views or subscribers. I love your music you play. I wish you were more popular because you definitely deserve that.
Thanks! just trying to create a small bit of beauty...
@@danbluedeer I've known greensleeves for a while now, I just found your channel and an interest in lutes , harps and other instruments I'm ignorant of, thank you, It's most definitely beauty : )

Good Morning Daniel,
I very much enjoyed this duet. A lovely treatment of a tune that can become a bit "passe" if care is not taken. I like the little historical background notes on the origin of the tune as well. The King Henry story is one that is always rolled out whenever this is played and has taken on a life of it's own now. I guess we will never know who wrote this but I don't think Henry VIII did. You seem to be enjoying being the custodian of the Archlute. This piece shows it of well so thanks for posting it.
Anne and I are slowly improving and today is our "official" release date from isolation but we do not really have the energy to do much. It certainly knocks one back a bit.
So a quick note to all of Dan's dedicated viewers, Folks please take care not to get this bug. It really is unpleasant All of you you Keep safe and Dan, will you please keep playing and keeping us entertained.
Clive
Thanks Clive! It's great to hear you and Anne are on the mend.
Take care of yourselves....
Thanks, Clive. I'm glad that you're alright.
My girlfriend came back to town after moving away to visit, for the prom. But in the days before hand, I came across this video, and was completely moved by it. So I learned how to play Greensleves on my guitar (completely huge genre change to what I normally play) and played it for her. Added some of my own personal lyrics to it too. She loved it. So all I must say, is thank you, sir. And keep it up!!
well, you sound like a creative guy ....keep doing what you're doing!
I picture you in renaissanse times playing this sweet melodies to a noble king followed by a magnificent banquet.
maybe the'll get that time machine built soon so we can check it out....
@@danbluedeer just imagine that! Wouldn't it be cool, haha.
Greensleeves has been one of my favourite melodies since hearing Vaughn Williams' Fantasia as a toddler (my mother used to tell how I insisted she put the record on or I wouldn't go to sleep) fifty-odd years ago. I especially liked this rendition showing off the range and sonority of the archlute. And of course, your playing was sublime too!
Bonnie - thanks for your comment!
the highest level of performance !!!
one of the best versions of this divine melody
As always, thank you very much !!!
Many thanks! much appreciated...
Hi there, I discovered ur music around 2.5 years ago when I was pregnant with my baby. I had never heard greensleeves before. I absolutely fell in love with it and heard this version on repeat so many many times. Now that baby is about to turn 2 on 3/14. She absolutely loves this version too. She says "mama play greensleeves" and twirls to it :). Wants to hear it on repeat too. thank you for playing beautiful music. Love lots of ur other videos. Have a great day
Thank you so much! glad you like the music

Greensleeves has always been one of my favorites since my very young childhood. With these extremely emotional times this has been a slave on raw nerves.

This is the most beautiful rendition of Greensleeves/What Child is This. I'm going to add this to my Christmas music list.

This Anonymous guy wrote some real masterpieces... Great playing, beautiful sound.
Yes, he (or she) probably was one that shunned the spotlight and just enjoyed hearing others play the song

Bravo. I like it that you preserved the "original" tune and variations---while making your own arrangements for two lutes. Thank you for your artistry and hardwork. All the best.

Thanks Heide! glad you like it
What a beautiful instrument and interpretation!
Thanks Nicholas!
Beautiful. And fitting as it also doubles as 'What child is this'
Thanks!
Fun fact, in case you didn't know, the lyrics for "what child is this" were written by a former Union soldier from the American Civil War who went on to become a notable hymn writer.
"What Child Is This" always used to make me think of the "Mind that Child" signs on the backs of ice-cream vans (as the Greensleeves tune is commonly used by ice-cream sellers to attract customers).
amazing as always! thank you for diluting my gray days with wonderful music!
Glad you enjoy it!
Such a good recreation . More song then I expected

Great! Greensleeves is one of my favourite songs!
It's a classic (and a bit of an earworm)
Used to accompany a flutist on these variations on guitar. Your arrangement is very inspiring, so fascinating how the parts are woven with each other with these so similar sounding instruments. Like your tempo, your obvious joy of playing, and the sonorous archlute's basses.
Thank you very much! i appreciate your comment
I am so very happy that these instruments have withstood the test of time and that there are people like you who have mastered their intricacies, I must thank you for the chance to hear these beautiful strings work their magic. Your fingers speak to my soul its very self. Truly astounding! I wish a good day and an even grander morrow to you!

damn that was hella fresh my dude!

I would love to dedicate time to learning how to play instruments. I wish I paid attention in school now. I'm 19 so there is time but I doubt I'd ever get this good anyway
Edit:Earned a new subscriber .
Go for it! most of the learning can be done by watching experienced players and practicing a lot
Sweet! Last time I was this early King Henry VIII was still playing it!😘

This version is called "Greensleeves to a ground",I believe. It's still a mystery who changed the original Tudor/medieval tone to this, but it's good

😍😍😍
CZcams! I'm not doing concerts anymore....I might do an occasional funeral or wedding, but you probably don't want to crash the party for one solo piece

Thank you, Sharon!
This is so pretty ❤❤❤❤
thank you!
Truly beautiful masterpiece! Perfectly fits the original style of Greensleeves. Have you thought of creating your own piece for lute in a renaissance style?
Thanks! I'm more of an interpreter than composer.
@@danbluedeer And a really professional one!

Thank you Graciela!
I like.
that's good to hear!
So absolutely lovely! What a way to start the day!!
May I ask if those two are the same instrument who somehow switches/adds to its handle, or if they're two completely different ones? 😊
completely different instruments, although that's a good idea to have a telescoping neck!
Good Morning Mr. Estrem,
There are a couple of your lute pieces I have published on here, that I was curious if you had sheet music or tabs for, and if so, is there a way to find or purchase them? Sorry if this is a commonly asked question, and I have missed the FAQ somewhere.
Hi James - I had to stop giving out scores a few months ago. Too many requests and too little time....
So beautiful! How did you record this so synchronised without using headphones?
Brian -Thanks for listening!
Hope i can get as good as you someday
just keep on practicing - it will come
Who is the maker of your archlute? I'm trying to get a good comparison of the different brands
it was made by Dan Larson in Duluth, MN USA
Does the archlute come apart for transportation? It would be difficult to carry it about as it is. Is the theorbo an entirely different instrument?
The instrument doesn't leave the studio... I'm not an expert on theorbos, so you may want to consult the ultimate authority - wikipedia :) the archlute and theorbo have different tunings
