connor is speaking facts.
TVs skew colors so bad its honestly a disgrace
Yeah, he's absolutely right, changing my TV and monitor settings for the first time was an experience
@@ssfbob456 brother, you're one of us now
Is there like a preset for this kind of thing?
@@zheddy5093 There are presets depending on your display but they're hit or miss. If you want it finely tuned, you'd have to go through your display's picture settings and adjust the sliders accordingly.
I've seen "before and after" comparisons and it's just not important enough for me to care. Like....cool. tight. But also, default looks just as good. It really does for me.
Joey and Garnt are the type of people to buy a gaming PC and plug their monitor to the motherboard instead of the graphics card
Goddamn it, I actually did that once so that hits home 😂
joey did do that.....for like 5 years
'Yeah and I just don't give a shit'
-Joey
After probably dropping a ton of money on something good 🤣
@@TechGuru666 source?
@@popeyedanzii467 it’s been a running joke for years. The source is the podcast itself
I spiritually relate to this rant so fucking hard its indescribable
Mudan is prolly in pain at his monitor as he hears this. If you haven't seen the editing process and know the cinematography cues and details, those details are going to be ignored visually, same goes for audio, writing, acting etc.
I agree with Connor
Joe and Garnt's argument is the same argument people have used for 30 fps vs 60 fps gaming and delayed netcode vs rollback netcode. Never noticed until experienced.
I feel like the netcode example is just making up a person for the sake of argument, lol. The only way to not notice the difference between netcodes, is to have a connection so perfect and stable, that the flaws of either, never come up.
But for the frame-rate and tv settings thing, thats just subjective preference.
@@valeoncat13 you would be shocked at how many people pushed against rollback in fighting games
As someone who has experienced 30 and 60 fps, i disagree. I don't care. As long its not a slideshow presentation like 15 fps or 10fps, I'm ok
@@valeoncat13 you wouldn’t know what shit netcode is until you go to rollback or predictive based netcode. Delay/lockstep is GOD AWFUL.
When I got a second monitor for the first time, I saw a "gaming" setting and thought "oh yeah, I'm a gamer, I should use this setting" and all the colours were so more vibrant and awesome. Few years go by, and my friends and I have a straight up argument about the colour of a flag. We were playing a game and I made our country's flag. I picked a really nice, deep blue colour. My friends would be like "Why's your flag purple?" "What, no it's blue, it'd dark blue" "No it's purple, man" "Dude, it's dark blue, just slightly edging towards violet. That's not purple" and so on. Few months go by, I was doing something on photoshop. I picked a violet colour. Saved it, then sent it to a friend. And I noticed, the purple was wrong on my second monitor, it was way... less blue than I had picked. I checked on my phone and it was also that wrong colour. Finally I decided to move my photoshop window over to my other monitor and immediately I saw how wrong the colour was. So Connor is completely right. I put the photoshop window in between my two monitors and manually adjusted my main monitor (the one I turned on gaming mode on) to match the other monitor that I'm pretty sure is correct because my phone was showing the same colour as the monitor for the same picture. I also remembered that argument we had few months back, so I picked a colour I thought was similar to that flag I did, a very nice deep blue. Moved it over to the other monitor and it was just purple, not even a hint of blue. No wonder my friends thought I was colour blind.
Reminder your iPhone also has settings for "high contrast" and "reduce white point"
I experienced something similar with genshin, I used to play it on my phone and when I tried it on my tablet that has a very color accurate display (delta of less than 1), it felt like the 4k vs 480p meme.
@@nelisezpasce Don't have an iPhone but my phone has recently changed its own settings to be more vibrant. Don't know why it did that, but honestly I like vibrant colours, and it's not much of an issue for me on my phone. I don't use it for editing, playing games or even watching film. Most of the time my phone is for texting, like right now, or listening to music/podcasts when I work. So it isn't a bother for me on the phone, only on pc.
man I do agree with connor, im not a picture quality snob by any means, but boi I do feel a gut wrenching pain when I see my uncle's tv and is blueish as fuck
Then what should I do ?
@@shubhamwagh5171 something you can do is look up a review for your monitor that has the colours adjusted and use those values.
You won’t always find them but it’s worth a shot. Otherwise you’ll have to find a calorimeter (I think that’s the right word) which basically analyses the colours on your monitor and tells you how to adjust the colours.
@@kylefleming7680 @Kyle Fleming Calorimeter is something else 😂
it's colorimeter (or color calibration tool)
To add on to your comment, it can be fairly expensive and you'd rarely use it. Look to rent one instead 👌
Connor: music is just beeps and boops
also Connor: THIS PIXEL IS WRONG!!!
but serious talk wrong color setting in monitor is gut wrenching.
Best way to have Joey understand this is now that he started a clothing brand, what would happen if he did a series of photoshoots with black clothing but when it goes out in public, it's skewed to a darker purple color instead. May have been because the color calibration of the monitor was bad.
Therefore people who photo/video edit recommend to color calibrate their monitors to make sure they're working with true color.
I mean you should be doing some basic color calibration on every monitor cuz you're just gonna see things wrong.
It's not really difficult to do but people just don't know about it.
Connor is absolutely right and I will die on this hill. Default TV settings have way too high contrast to where there's no middle ground for shadows so you either get something lit in white or pitch black. Ideally films are made to where you can still make out details in a dark setting but not to where it's all black except for a few light sources. I hate whenever Connor actually has a good point Garnt and Joey just brush it off like it's whatever.
Also default settings for TVs tend to make the colors overly vivid and incorrect and the brightness can be bad for your eyes. Doing basic adjusting even without a colorimeter will make your TV look so much better and much more accurate.
TL;DR quick adjustments you can do:
- Change color temperature to something more warm. A plain white screen should not have a blue tint to it. Closer to red/yellow or if that's too bothersome then make it more neutral white.
- Adjust contrast to make sure there's a gradual change from white and black.
- Adjust brightness to not sear your eyes. Lower it until you don't feel eye strain.
- Lower sharpness until there isn't a "ghosting" image around your content. Example, watch cartoons with a more simplified art style. If you see a white border around the character's black outline, reduce the sharpness setting.
- Turn off any "smooth motion" or "motion clarity" settings to get rid of "Soap Opera" effect.
I bought a 40" Hisense TV couple of months ago, and the default settings are just atrocious. The contrast was so awful that darker shades of white (even lighter gray) just blended in. It took m some time to figure it out how to change it because of the awful settings.
jesus 💀
I like how Connor’s opinions (not relating to food) are usually great, and they act like he’s the crazy one
ever just feel like garnt and joey are a brick wall?
Because someone will inevitably ask, the device hes talking about is a colorimeter.
Live shows like concerts and movies feels different for the same reason praying in a Church feels different. They both hit the same sections of the brain where it feels much more communal and you lose your sense of self becoming part of something bigger than yourself
Which is why its not a real judge. If a comedian doesnt work at home he is not funny he is just good at manipulating social groups. If it doesnt work at home without a laugh track its not as good
@@tadhgmcgrath1409 I agree, but the biggest appeal of live shows is that subjective experience. It gets tricky when some movies for example are designed for the big screen. They may not stand up critically over time because you're missing a vital part of what they were made for
interesting
How fucking high are you
I've seen some people's TV settings look like a pointillism painting.
I compared them to my settings. So much of a difference.
This might be the most based argument Connor has made.
Same old same old Connor being absolutely 100% right about something and the other two being proud about their ignorance and ignoring him
Different perspectives. Connor is also the guy who said "music is just beeps and bops". People are particular about different things, you may feel superior than other "ignorant" people on the issue you are passionate about, but I guarantee you that you are probably just as ignorant in some other area, like audio quality and listening music on mp3 instead of flac etc and others are cringing at you. If it makes no difference to someone, what's the big deal? You can't live life obsessing about every single thing.
@@Aditya-sn4sr I don't particularly care about both opinions, but didn't Kevin Penking actually agree with Connor on the Beeps and Boops opinion on his Guest episode?
I personally studied music for just a very short period in Highschool and do follow a little bit of Classical music sometimes, I have a very very basic understanding of Music Theory but I still can't correlate any music knowledge to how much I appreciate a piece or a song, because it actually doesn't matter that much a lot of the time. When I hear something I like it could be the most basic thing ever and yeah, in that case music is just Beeps and Boops and I like it. When I can tell how skillfull someone is in writing or performing I can definitely appreciate that skill, but doesn't change that much my overall enjoyment of that music.
When it comes to Display color on the other hand I can understand why someone that works on videos, design, filmography, digital art, ecc. has to pay attention to it, because it's definitely a technical issue if what you make is different from how you envisioned. I do art when I have time on a very old PC and the change in color from there to my phone is like day and night, literally (as in there's so much blue on my PC) and it's so frustrating trying to color fix it, 'cause it looks so bad when I transfer the file.
I can understand not caring about fine tuning it, I never touch my TV and I don't do that for the sake of gaming either, don't really care that much in those cases, but when you're making a product you want it to come out the right way.
(Someone also explained it in another comment using Joey's clothing brand as an example, since his design are apparently all made by him, with the help of others, if they were to use his monitor, which might have a slight blue undertone, when his designs are made into clothes the overall feeling would change completely, obviously if he's helped by professionals that shouldn't happen, but that works as an example)
@@Aditya-sn4sr Nah, this isnt a different perspectives thing. Its a straight up technical dependency that has an effect on a product.
It blows my mind that Connor just spits facts %90 of the time and the others ignore his advice like it wouldn't be a life changer.
Changing my TV settings was the best thing I've ever done with my TV.
Once you change it you can tell how gray the original is
Now everytime I get a new monitor/TV the first thing I do is change the settings.
VIBRANT MODE GANG RISE UP ✊

@@blurb9319 your probably right lmao
@@amithabraham2224 my monitor has HDR but not my TV😔
Best example was the Banana rant
I used to work at a electronics store, and they way it was explained to me is that the default settings for TVs are made to get them to "pop" compared to other TVs when on a showroom floor. In otherwords, they crank up settings to trick people into buying them
This is one of the rare times that Connor is not the one with the shit take
That's what artist and animators been saying all this time!!!
More frames ≠ better quality...
I just leave my TV in game mode
So with Conner here. Always Color calibrate my monitors
There's definitely a special connection in live music with the crowd cheering. Whenever my family went on long car rides when I was younger, my dad always played his music, and for some songs he had the live version. For one song, the artist plays the first few notes to silence, but then the crowd recognizes which song it is and roars in response. For me, that song doesn't *really* start until I hear that roar.
I agree with connor. It's like refresh rate thing, you only realize how good it is when you see it.
True, i never noticed until i bought a laptop with 300hz, before that I've been playing on a large sony 4K TV with 60hz for years. everything is so smooth!
Resisting the urge to pull my eyes out due to the setting bs Conner mentioned aside.
My tv out of the box was so colorless i actually had to put the color up to make it natural looking.
Tweaking all the settings to make a nice image is really satisfying
I remember watching Heaven's Feel Spring Song, and thinking this movie was definitely made to be viewed in a theater. There is something about the direction and cinematography of the shots that made it feel cinematic, and not just a high budget show.
_"They probably put it on movie mode and think... that's it!"_
- That's precisely what you _should_ do. Just by changing that _one setting_ you've already won 80% of the battle.
Pick Movie/Cinema/Expert mode on your TV - this should turn off all picture processing and set the color to warm, but you can double-check - make sure the aspect ratio is correct, then never touch it again.
You can also adjust the backlight setting to fit the room, but if you want to go _beyond_ that it's time to hire a professional calibrator...
I have movie mode and filmmaker mode on both my tv's and the latter is the good mode so I can see where he's coming from
60 FPS movies and Anime is the best, can't go back to 30, same thing with games
Gosh darng it, poor Connor, he's totally right!
Filmmaker Mode. You’re welcome.
I appreciate at least Connor understands.
Ive done digital art though so I became more keen to that and always a stickler for beat picture & sound quality I can get
You're meant to change it loool
I actually have done this, but I'm a photographer. So right colors is really important when editing. I used the basic calibration on my computer and it actually came out pretty good. But I've definitely been meaning to buy the screen calibration Connor is talking. Really just helps with peace of mind.
Connor is absolutely correct, adjusting your TV settings is a necessity and can make a huge difference in picture quality, if you spent the money to buy a TV then why wouldn't you want it performing at it's best. It would drive me nuts to know that my TV could look significantly better and that every show I'm watching and game I'm playing looks inaccurate and worse then what was intended.
I was listening to this while making Mario Maker levels, and at this exact point I noticed my TV has this thing where the screen brightness got dimmer the more dark colours there were on screen, turned that shit off immediately.
Connor is absolutely right about color profiles and the importance of color accuracy during production. It's the same principle us audio engineers use when creating, mixing, and mastering music in a studio. If the listening environment of the producer is terrible, say, he's making sound decisions on an old half-broken pair of earbuds, he'll never have a grasp on whether or not that product is going to translate authentically across a wide array of listening devices such as stereos, headphones, car speakers, etc. Same thing with video, I imagine, because we're all working with definite bands of either sound frequencies or light frequencies.
Tldr, color accuracy is important in production and important for consumer products to accurately represent the artist's intent
I love how Joey doesn't care, despite studying UI.
Being a part of a massive crowd pop-off is such a cool thing.
One of my favorite theater audience experiences was seeing The Raid 2 opening night. Good crowd, everyone's been into the movie. Get to the ending of the Bat Guy and Hammer Girl fight, and everything is quiet. There's a moment of silence in the film as the loser slumps and the bat *clinks* against the ground, and one person in the theater says aloud "Oh SHIT!" Everyone in the theater busts out laughing, because he just said what we were all thinking.
I have custom TV settings for different experiences.
Tbh, unless I'm making stuff to print or publish online, I prefer to calibrate my TV/monitor settings to look good (to me) than to be realistic. I want to expand my colour ranges, make subjects stand out more etc..
And quite often, different profiles look better for different things. Like grass sports Vs story games Vs competitive gaming Vs live action films Vs anime etc..
Joey :" you're point is great but idgaf"
You're should also go through every settings on your TV to better the experience. Usually your tv tells you what's what.
All us digital artists having an aneurism watching this
Slappin' the BASS!!
Garnt the guy who can't tell the difference between PS5 vs PS4 grafix!
You really should tune your TV display settings. Many are by default set to Showroom settings (i.e. a really brightly lit open room). You need to tune for where you actually put the TV and the normal lighting you'll use. Turn off the lights for movies? Don't forget to adjust the settings for that as well (that's what that cinema setting shortcut is for).
Connor is 100% right, go to your TV and mess with the settings, you will be shocked at how much better your TV can look
There's some animals that I suspect have that communal feeling as well: crows, dolphins and especially elephants
Didnt think i'd ever have to worry about this untill i purchased an LG OLED tv
Grant tripping with that music take lmao
Its always connor vs the boys lol
Slightly frustrated that Connor was saying defaullt settings suck...but didn't give a rough guide as to what settings you should fiddle with to imrpove the picture :P
Always changed the settings for new TVs default just doesn't cut it
Bruh how do you not change the default setting to movie or gaming🤦🏽♂️
You're supposed to put it in cinema mode, i didn't realize it till i was watching a youtube video on my tv, and there was a blur where the creator put a jump cut. I think its worse with new Smart TVs because its usually 1080p or more so its more noticeable.
Who watches tv in 2022?There's no adblock.
Pretty sure they are talking about televisions not cable TV.
The best measurement is comparing your phone (one with OLED screen) to the TV.
I relate with conner, but the difference between tv broadcast vs home video masters for anime
My monitor's default settings suck .It's okay while gaming but the moment I watch movies or anime, I can't see sheet.
I own multiple computer setup of 4 missmatch monitor and have 30 spare monitor, i did tweak every monitor but i still often have monitor who cannot see low yellow but some of the other one see them properly
Our audio has to be fixed to the forward speakers or it is louder behind the tv than it is in front of it. Also my parents are becoming super hard of hearing or something because they listen to so much full blast. The actual appearance of stuff on the screen is pretty bleh. Default works for us, but it just happens that way in that room with that tv. The tv in a different room had to be tweaked to look right.
I am on Connors side with the colours thing. When ever I look at the same thing on an Oled or something I notice colours were waaaaaay off.. so I always set up colours first before doing my thing. As a kind of artist and now designer it is a must
Live shows also have speaker arrays that cost more than your car, it literally sounds better. Same goes for ambient music.
Anybody know where I can get the shirt Garnt is wearing or what it’s from? I tried to find it awhile back
The first thing I do when a get a new TV is muck with the colors.
I occasionally watch TV with my family, and my eyes gets strained(?) watching it
Decided to change the default settings after I bought a Nintendo Switch
The description is not linking the full stream
Bout to change the setting rn 😭
im sensitive to light,so i make one main adjustment and keep it there.
credibility has gone down
When I play games I have it on game default settings on my tv but when I watch movies I have to go to brightness and change the settings, then again my tv just sucks
This is why I alway have warm lighting
I've seen someone "fix" my monitor and I was definitely grateful but they asked if I was blown away by the "increase in quality" and I flat out told them "honestly both look fine. Could go either way"
I. DO. NOT. CARE.
What about the filmmaker settings, master Connor?
Garnt and Joey are the type of people who would say “why do I need 1080p my magnavox is just fine!”
A good comparison garnt would now understand, is that it's like having a shitty keyboard, and then getting a super nice one. That super nice keyboard will become your new baseline and give you a lot of respect for what you have, but your standards also shoot up drastically. Same thing with colors on TVs.
I completely agree with Connor on that one.
On my right screen your background goes more blue and on my left screen its purple pretty much only
My friends family tv has contrast and sharpness at full. Everything looks like hyper reality
At this point you guys will argue about literally absolutely anything it’s impressive 😂
I would agree with Connor, some of my friends were doing merchandise to be print out and one of them buying new laptop to do her work.
the colour skewed so bad to the point 2 person sending the same photos from different monitor with totally different shade of yellows
Color calibration is the way to go!
I see both sides of this argument
Dude, I would pay good money to hire and fly out Connor to do my TV settings. I want that shit tailored.
as someone who works with calibrating tv's I very much agree with connor
I feel like that for some movies when I go to the cinema. I can't stand to watch a livestream VOD it's so much better when watching it live. however, when I go to a live consort it ruins the experience for me, I rather the CD or DVD.
I changed monitors last year, and it really pisses me off that I couldnt get the beautiful color I got on my old monitor. I know this new one is able of reproducing the same, but is such a hassle to change the setting until I make it, I just resigned and grew used to the new ugly color settings.
2:40 Connor realizes he's talking to somebody that had a high end gpu that sat fully unused most of their youtube career right?
Someone tell me where I can get what Garnt is wearing.
Tbh I hate going to cinemas or concerts, amount of negative impact from people around me kills everything from me, only exception from this is classical music with no additional mics and audio in concert hall, where you actually listen to raw instruments without amplification from any devices.
Tiny desk concerts are good
If you think your screen settings is fine, google white sheets and start messing with your brightness settings and colors up and down while looking at the white sheets.
Believe me, you're gonna start seeing shades of whites that you thought you could see before.
Classic Connor being Connor and the boys being boys. Also I live the fact that they can all agree that daft punks alive 2007 album is objectively good.
Every time Connor makes a valid argument, Joey’s response is “I don’t care. I don’t use it. Never noticed”. He never wants to agree to his point though
But Joey is isn’t mocking Connor for it. It’s just Joey being, I have never though of it that way. He’s not even saying Connor is wrong. Chill the hate boner man
he just doesn't have a strong opinion about it. It's not like he's invalidating connor's opinion.
My Tv make animation look smooth and it's fine for me it just looks smoother. Movies look about the same on my TV but my TV is a pretty high end TV even if it's a bit older now and I have just messed with the setting a bit. Some movies are just better in a theater and live shows are better because of the crowd and the energy. I can't mosh pit when listening from home. Also dogs also kinda feed off energy. If you're hyped up they get hyped up. I do think the color thing is pointless especially on something like CZcams unless it's something like slow mo guys but a lot of CZcams isn't worth bothering about colors being right.
The only TV setting I change is brightness and maybe contrast. That's it.
That said, I don't have a TV since I move out from my parents house in college.
The Batman was best seen at the movies. its not the same at home
100% Agreed
this is a classic talk between a technician and just some normies lol
As a massive fan of improvisational music, live is the way to go
I was about to increase the brightness of one of my monitors then remembered it's like that because it's broken :(
Okay. Where's my remote? Where's my remote, Connor? I HAVEN'T SEEN MY TELEVISION'S REMOTE IN SIX YEARS, CONNOR! *FIND IT FOR ME AND I'LL MAKE THESE MYTHICAL CHANGES TO MY TV TO MAKE IT MARGINALLY BETTER*

I've had this moment with my GF. Her settings were fucking awful. Super dark so many details got lost, way too much contrast and the colours were super overblown. After changing the settings she was flabbergasted.
