    Garnt sorta mentioned something I noticed for a while now. People say that anime got worse with time and good anime is much more rare. But that depends on how you look at it. Back in the "good old times", there were seasons with like 5 anime series airing during it, two of which were great. Now we might have a season with over 40 series airing and 5 of them are great. The absolute amount of good anime increased, but its percentage dropped. There's also the fact that around half of the "good old" anime would probably seem like garbage if you rewatch it now without any nostalgia filter.
    For example, autumn 1992. Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki and Yu Yu Hakusho started. Nuku Nuku was also kinda okay. And a bunch of series that no one remembers or cares about. Only two great series in a season. That is not exactly great. Winter 1993 right after it, just 5 OVA episodes of Ah My Goddess. Which would probably not even be fun today. Summer 1992, the only decent one was Bastard. And even that greatly loses to modern Maou Gakuin and, as seen with the remake, did not age well at all.

    • @mardshima2070
      @mardshima2070 Před rokem +37

      Imo one thing that can also make people biased with "good old anime" is how they binge watching anime when they started to hooked up with anime. At the beginning people usually gonna binge watch a bunch of those amazing/legendary shows such as FMAB, Clannad, Death Note, ect within short amount of time. Then after they began to simply catch up with seasonal anime they will find that there fewer nowadays (seasonal) anime that is good (pique their interest). In the past they can find and watch several title of good anime within a month or even week, but now they can only find one or two within 3 months.

      @@azquidif6319 I kinda disagree with that. There are a huge number of extremely loud fans of genuinely terrible western shows.
      It's just that most people think that Anime is a _genre._ They're thinking: "I don't like superheroes, so anime is not for me"
      While with western stuff, even if everyone and their mother watches Game of Thrones, people still know that that is not the _only_ kind of series there is.
      The thing is, generic shonen fans aren't any louder than Marvel ones. It's just that movies in general are popular enough where you're always exposed to a wider breadth of genres -not just MCU movies. Anime is simply too niche for that. The only ones that are famous enough are stuff like MHA, JJK, AoT, DS, OP, etc.

Anyone in the right place under the right circumstances can make an animation or a game. That’s why we get dozens upon dozens of D and C tier media. the manga 'Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai' was a mega hit in Japan and asian countries, it was top 9 upto 2009 (although last manga published in 1996), sold more than Yuyuhakusho, Jojo, HxH, Bleach etc with over 50 M copies. I think 3 reasons the anime was not that discussed is
      1. the original fans are kind of old now, usually in 30s and 40s
      2. the anime adaption does not look good, esp the color looks terrible even compared to the first anime adaption version.
      3. There was not enough hype advertising, esp to the western audience who are not familiar.
      nontheless, the story is still briliant (many old fans remember it) esp it's basically the 'Adventure of Popp, the most well developed side character who suited better for the main character', so it will be a real treasure treat for anyone who discovers it.

    This isn't really unique to anime, it's just Sturgeon's Law, "90 % of everything is crap". Hell, I'd argue it's less of an issue with anime than a lot of other media given how easy it often is to separate trashy and derivative anime from higher quality stuff when looking for something to watch. If the title is overly long-winded and dumb sounding, the art and animation is flat and generic and the synopsis sounds like the description of a sub-genre rather than a story, there's a 99,9 % chance you can skip it without missing out on anything. If you're still afraid that "I was reincarnated as a level 999 mage in another world with my mother's ex-boyfriend's step-sister's second cousin removed and a high-end gaming laptop" might end up being a subversive masterpiece and a touchstone of our generation, you could also just look up some reviews.

    I doubt that he is a true classic Sci Fi fan, 'cos classic Sci Fi like Dune (mentioned here) etc are basically heavily focused in politics rather than technology or action.
    He hates politics (which anime with good world building has) nor intelligent mind games (like Death Note), but also just wants to turn his brain off for action and don't watch it to remember it, yet defines anime being cheap as lacking world building and story to remember? Aren't those kind of words and logic contradictory??
    Hates politics in anime but likes Gundam and FMAB which are one of the most political animes, of all animes?
    Can't even remember modern Scifi Mecha (the limited genre he likes) classics like Code Geass nor Gurren Lagan properly.
    Hates even the most well recieved mainstrean modern animes for even western casuals (AOT, Death note), which showcase he is not a good representative for evaluation of overall animes (doubt he would appreciate the modern classics like Vinland Saga, Violet Evergarden, Made in Abyss etc) with his very limited taste (even for his limited taste of SciFi and Mecha, since he may not like 86 or 'Legend of the Galactic Heroes' for being political, 'Trapped in a Dating Sim' or 'Lycoris Recoil' for being cheap sexualization.)
    I like his experiment, science project videos, and also liked the remaining part of his trash taste episode (since I'm also engineer major) but the things he talks about anime is mostly just noncoherent for me. (sorry if I sound aggressive)

    There are tonnes of great scifi books and the reason the industry doesn’t deal with bringing new stuff to the markets is because they have already purchased an IP that has been proven to work. So thy just keep making it, just look at MCU and StarWars, it’s literslly the same 3-5 basic narratives that are being remixed and published. Same with isekai, noone is doing anything fresh, or subverts the tropes in an interesting way anymor, and why should they when the audience eats this up with a spoon.
    I’d also say that anime has fallen in story complexity since Japan started to seriously to foreign audiences, that is the reason why you do not see a new challenging the audience stuff like Memories, GITS, Angels Egg, Jin Roh, Akira, Haibane Renmei, Yokohama Kaidashi Kiyo, Welkome to the HNK, Paprika, Paranoia Agent, or even Gasaraki.
    This will come to an end though, when the gen Z has grown up more and want to tell their stories.
    As an older millenial I think our generation of creators dropped the ball on this, and got to focused on just surviving, which I totally get. Im the same.

      Most media is garbage. I don't think most people love *media* they like a book series, or a specific movie, or a game franchise. If you enjoy "anime" you are probably enjoying it in a way that is atypical of most people. Likely more tolerant of some of the tropes or value things exclusive to the medium. I honestly think the anime fandom is weird because so many people are like this (how many people watch movies vs being really into movies?), but it's probably because it was niche for such a long time that most viewers were people who went out of their way to watch it.
      Now that anime is becoming more mainstream, I hear the opposite "I love anime." But they're not into the medium, they just found a few shows they like and are just as unlikely to leave their comfort zone as they were before.

    I'm usually excited when they finally talk about anime in the podcast, but man was this painful to listen to.
    It's totally fine if you're not into anime or you watch them very casually. But a guy who hasn't seen much, doesn't even remember what they anime he's watched are called, doesn't even finish half of what he's started, doesn't like when anime try to be intelligent or include political aspects and only wants mindless BAAM BOOM with giant robots, has no business calling 90% of anime trash.
    While it is true that about 90% of not just anime but any medium in general is trash, you only get to say that after you've watched hundreds of titles, including all the worthwhile ones. Then you can complain about how most of it is trash and there's nothing left for you to watch. Out of the TT boys, I would accept this comment only from Joey. Mr. "I've watched 8 anime but I don't remember which" calling an entire medium he hasn't explored trash comes off as either stupidity or arrogance like "I'm too good to watch this anime thing since 90% of is trash anyway. Not that I've watched any".

    • @kalialiah346
      @kalialiah346 Před rokem

      He is completely welcome to say he doesn't like 90% of anime and say it is trash because he is a fellow human being with his own subjective opinion just as you are welcome to your own. Also you don't know how many he has watched maybe he has watched a hundred separate anime and he just doesn't remember most because he doesn't come at the shows for story he seems to (from his words at least) just want something that allows him to relax and relieve anxiety by watching monkey brain cool shit, and it seems that by watching said shit if there is a story there it will find him whether or not he wants to. And if that story triggers the part of his brain that recognizes political stuff (and only political stuff other intellectual concepts haven't been stated to turn him away) especially the kind from our world he stops watching. You don't get to gatekeep the idea of having negative opinions on anime because no one does. Everyone is different and seeks different things from the media they consume and liking "monkey activation" cool robots, pretty animation and older sci-fi genre styles is not a bad thing. And liking power fantasy harem stuff, the modern trendy stuff like isekai, or more politically charged things isn't bad either. No show is truly bad for everyone even the worst shit will have a fan and the highest acclaimed piece will have detractors.
      Tldr: just because someone might not watch anime or watches it for different reasons than you does not mean their opinion is bad or good because its an opinion and its subjective.
      So don't worry about it.
      P.s. If you feel like someone is wrong about anime or any other umbrella topic try to find what they like in other media and give them a recommendation that you enjoyed that is along those lines. If they enjoy it now you have something to talk about, if they didn't try again with a now better understanding of what they enjoy.

      @@triggerfairy4070 his sample size is super insufficient (even his limited samples aren't right, since he hates politics yet likes Gundam, FMAB), so he is not qualified for such conclusion. Also, the value of an anime is subjective, one's anime evaluation does not equal to another, so one's 90% trash maybe not trash to another (just like he hated AOT or Deathnote while majority likes it)

    • @enagah
      @enagah Před rokem

      @@triggerfairy4070 That's not the issue. The thing is that "90% of anime is trash" statement is something you come to realize on your own after watching anime for years and after completing hundreds of titles. A complete newbie wouldn't know that. And since he doesn't have such an experience, he's basically parroting what others say.
      Also let's not forget that what is good and what is trash is a bit subjective and changes from person to person depending on their standards, criteria and preferences. And this guy's bar in particular is quite low since as long as something has giant robots and mindless action he's satisfied. Well, guess what. There are thousands of shows like that since anime is THE medium about giant robots and mindless action in general. According to his own standards then, the worthwhile anime are way more than just 10%. Long story short, he's talking out of his ass. That's what annoys me and not the statement in itself.
