    UPDATE: 10/15/19
    It has come to my attention that the PX7 does suffer from sound degradation when the ANC is activated on max. It’s still not as bad as the sound quality hit the PX faces when max ANC is engaged but it’s still a problem nonetheless. Compared to ANC turned off, the sound signature of the PX7 gets a bit warmer sounding and closed in. I can deal with that a bit. However, the big issue I have is at higher volumes there is some sort of dynamic range or volume limiter in effect that hurts some of the fidelity in the music. It happens at all volumes, but it’s more apparent at higher volumes. For example, when I’m listening at a volume level where I want to feel immersed into the music and rock out, the volume on certain frequencies in the music raises and lowers as to not distort the speaker. When I turn off the ANC, this phenomenon doesn’t occur which leads me to believe B&W implemented this to purposely restrain your music from distorting the speaker whilst ANC is active. This doesn’t happen with my Sony WH1000XM3 or Sennheiser Momentum 3 Wireless when they both have their ANC on max. In terms of sound, the PX7 is now behind both the Momentum’s and Sony’s for me now as a result of this.

      Huge Bummer. Really hoped that this wont happen. I will receive my pair today and will see what it can handle. If its as bad as it seems i will return them and wait because none of the current options seems to fit as well. Why did you just noticed it now?

    • @TheGamingAudiophile
      @TheGamingAudiophile  Před 4 lety +2

      Vendetta xRiich I noticed it on day 1 but believed it was the sound signature until I really dived in yesterday and played all types of music that really causes it to initiate the volume limiter. If you don’t listen a bit above moderate volume it’s not a hugely noticeable issue.

      How did you find this out. I have listened to the PX7 and havent heard anything like this? Do you think they can fix this with an update?

    • @TheGamingAudiophile
      @TheGamingAudiophile  Před 4 lety +1

      Craig Olsen Could be fixable by an update. Listen to the song Dominator Mode by S.P.Y at around 75% volume. When the bass drops, cycle between ANC off and High and listen to the dynamics. You’re gonna hear the volume limiter in effect.

      @@TheGamingAudiophile I am not sure what to say. I listened to the song about 12 times and didn't really hear a huge difference. Maybe my ears arent as good as yours. There was some change in the base but not a massive change. I really appreciate the fact that you always get back to me. I am just trying to see if these are the right fit for me as the momentum 3 and the xm3 didn't do it for me.

    I know this is late but as I have recently gotten the PX7s myself, I was interested in hearing what others experience with regarding their sound and I think I agree with almost everything you said. The most important thing you mentioned was actually that the headphones sound more like your in a concert theatre while the Sony’s are much more of a closed space (to me they sound like you’re in the studio with the artist) and I think that’s what makes the PX7s stand out to me. It’s very true that live music sounds amazing and it does seem like B&W were trying to go for that theatric/arena sound that is similar to their speakers. They took a very different approach. Where the B&W really shine because of the wide soundstage and pinpoint accurate bass reproduction is with gaming, movies, and cinematic/entertainment. A lot of headphone reviewers don’t talk about that much but with those, the PX7 does amazing and I’ve not heard another headphone of its kind match it in that way. Versatility is also a win.

    Great and very detailed review thanks very much. Thinking about picking up the PX7 (I've had the original PX since launch) but the comments regarding sound quality degradation at higher volumes make me worry a bit. Is it only with ANC on or does the issue also exist whilst ANC is off? Do they sound better after breaking in (like the PX)?

    I bought the 1000xm3 and had them for 3 weeks until I saw the PX7 announced and returned them, The Sony were nice but had a few annoyances such as: don't sound good out of the box unless equalized, not able to connect to two devices at once, no automatic connection when turned on, unreliable touch controls, no auto turn off unless bluetooth is disconnected. Some of these are issues that my 100€ 4 year old Plantronics Backbeat Sense didn't have, so it felt underwhelming for a pair of 300€ cans. I bought the PX7 today and can't wait to try them in a few days!

    • @mbevin
      @mbevin Před 4 lety +1

      Couldn't agree more - I have both the PX and 1000xm3, and all these Sony annoyances are a major minus for the Sony's, which most reviewers tend to not highlight at all. What good is 20/30 hour battery life if it doesn't auto turn off, such that so often it's just worn out to zero when you left them for a day and now want to use them again? The touch control issues are also a major minus for me - I've had them so often make unwanted phone calls as a result of it deciding I touched it and told it to do something. And Sony still not supporting multiple devices years after most others is yet another non-insignificant hassle point. Plus having to choose between enabling an EQ to get a nice sound, or disabling it so as to be able to allow a high quality codec be used, is a further minus.
      The only minus for me with the PX's (whose sound I prefer already - any improvements in the PX7's are just a big bonus on that front) has been the weight (due to it leading to discomfort when wearing for long periods), and now that the PX7's solve this issue, I'm really looking forward to getting them and expecting to be then only using them going forward. Plus my PX's were bought a while ago with the soft case (I understand newer ones already came with a hard case), so the hard case will be nice too.

    I went for the B&W PX7s, simply because I like a all round good sound unlike what most people go for which is your typical bass which ruins the music for me. The Sony mx3s were good sound but from what reviews say, they don't last long as the sound is known to fade over time and develop crackly sound not to mention the material feeling cheap to me but yet still comfy. Overall, I think everyones hearing is different in a unique way when it comes to music and videos, but for me the B&W are a fantastic game changer with good quality sound and I can safely say they were better than my Bose QC 35ii.
    Edit: had to return B&W as they did not work well with my phone, the sound was muddy and they kept disconnecting, I swapped them for Sennheiser Momentum 3s which sounded much better!

Literally the only thing I didn't like about the OG PX was that it was uncomfortable to wear in the shop and I couldn't see myself actually enjoying using it while walking around. If the clamping and hard earpads are fixed in the PX7 then it is great news.

I do miss base from time to time but it can get a bit over whelming. What I do wish is that the px7 had a little more customisation in the app maybe an eq. Great review, thanks. I just returned the Sony M3s after trying them for a week. As TheGamingAudiophile points out, I believe they are more suitable for bass intensive music. I listen to mostly classical and jazz and the M3’s were just way too boomy for me. I tried EQing them, but I just didn’t like the sound. I’m going the try the PX7s. Hopefully the bass is a bit more subdued and not boomy. I have B&W 704 tower speakers and they are awesome. I hope the PX7s will exhibit similar characteristics in terms on sound quality. I know I’m comparing apples to oranges, but a cleaner sound than the M3s would be great. We’ll see...

    Good comparison review. One thing that people should know about that needs correcting though. You said that synthetic leather is more durable than genuine leather. The complete opposite is true. Genuine leather is much longer lasting than synthetic leather.
    You’re lucky to get anywhere near 2 years of heavy usage out of a pair ear pads made from fake leather. Just ask most people who’ve ever owned the Bose QC35. As long as they’re gently cleaned with a moist towel periodically, ear pads made from quality genuine leather will last many years. They may even outlast the rest of the headphone components. “Pleather” ear pads get you the opposite result...they are usually the weak link in a pair of headphones...the first part that needs replacing.

    Update 2:
    I have tried the Headphones a little longer. No matter what NC Mode your using. At higher Volumes the Bass is capped to a certain degree. It really sounds weird when a song which normally has more Bass just gets flat. Its definitely something that they could fix with software but i dont expect them to do so to be honest. Nevertheless when you turn Nc off these will blow your mind. They have pretty great passive noise isolation and the sound is sooo clean. Like i said the Sound review is on point. Its so good i even think about keeping them as Non NC Headphones.

    I have the mx3 for about 3 months. They sound fine to me, but I'm not an audiophile so I haven't got a high bar set for that.
    I don't have that creaking headband that you have at 1:32 . Maybe a bit of silicone spray might help yours?
    Comfort was very high on my wish list and I haven't been disappointed with the mx3s.
    The noise cancelling is almost surreal, so I'm super happy with that.
    But I do miss not having dual bluetooth connectivity. I have one device connected for calls and one as audio and that works as a work around. But if I want to connect to a third device I have to go through the pairing process.
    But they are very, very comfortable, so I am still happy with them.

    Guys !! Question for you: if you have the choice between sony xm4 or the audio technica ath-m50xbt2, which one do you choose?
    I want the best sound quality… i have the xm4, but i hesitate to buy the xbt2. Am i better with the sennheiser m3?
    So i want a better sound than the xm4. I love the sony’s but i don’t think they are « wow » for the sound.
    I have the skullcandy crusher evo and i have a lot more fun to listen to than the xm4. But after one hour of listening, the bass is wayyyy to loud hahah it’s annoying for the ears. The ANC on the Sony's are seriously amazing, but their sound quality... is really quite bad.

    Today received the Px7. I really think its not the right choice for most. First they are a little quite. At 100% its okay but definitly not loud enough for my taste. Momentum an Xm3s are a lot louder. Furthermore comfort is better on Sennheiser and Xm3s as well. Build quality i think is really good and somewhere between the Sennheiser and the Xm3s. Soundwise the review is quite on point. I will give them back to B&W for sure. I probably will switch to the Momentums. Only problem is the battery life but i want better looks/ build then the Sonys. First of all, excellent review!
    So much content and you didn’t ramble. Just the straight goods!
    Quick question- are the earpads on the PX7 replaceable? If not, that’s a bit of a red flag for me. If they were replaceable, I would likely pick them up very soon.
    Also, do you see the clamping force being problematic for eyeglass wearers?
    I’ve been looking for a pair of headphones to replace my B&O H7. I know there are better sounding headphones but I love the design language of B&Os headphones and construction quality- the anodized aluminum and actual lambskin leather (which has lasted very well despite 3+ years of heavy use) are awesome.

      mohamedahmed1023 Hey there and glad you enjoyed the review. The PX7 does have removable pads via a snap in system. The clamping force might be problematic with glasses. Also, the PX7 are sensitive to an improper seal which can cause the bass to reduce.

    Wow, thanks for the review! Best one I've seen yet on the PX7. I just got mine. I know nothing about the Sony headphones. But, I think you describe the sound of the PX7 very accurately. I'm in the sound camp of these Bowers & Wilkins.
    The two device connection is a plus as I switch between my iPhone 11 Pro, and iPad Pro all the time. Did you find the sound changed switching between devices? I thought I detected something going on when I did that.
    I just wish the B&W app. in iOS would allow just a little equalization. The soundstage on the PX7's blew me away! Is one better than the other, of course note. Everyone has different taste, and different music. But for jazz, rock, blues, indie I'm loving how the PX7 treats those music genres. Also the battery life seems great on the PX7 vs. my former PX headphones.

    I never really like the sound of the 1000xm3 that much. It was OK. Just thought it was too muddy and dark. Too much mid bass without enough deep bass visceral impact. The EQ Improves things but still couldn't get the impact I wanted. Bass was simply too loose.
    Anyway I felt the qc35 sounded significantly better. I would turn the volume up on my android phone and the volume down on the headphones (so that the bass can stay strong and low treble not be harsh).
    I even felt the hear.on 2 was significantly better than the 1000xm3. It was more clear with a more visceral impact in the bass. Also you can EQ the hear.on 2 to sound like the 1000xm3 (why would anyone do that though lol).
    Adjusting the EQ (lowering the bass by moving the slider slightly down and to the right) to the momentum 3 made them sound better than anything I heard EVER. Even better than my 58x jubilee (if that is possible).

    • @TheGamingAudiophile
      @TheGamingAudiophile  Před 4 lety +4

      h1a8 The XM3 to me sounds very full and rich. A warm sound that’s forgiving and pleasant to listen to. I love it. I don’t hear any bass looseness. It’s quite controlled but definitely not accurate. The subbass is also very well extended.
      The QC35 to me sounds better than the NC 700. The active EQ is less aggressive. The QC35 sounds well balanced with a nice and clear sound packing a great soundstage. The problem I have with the QC35 is that it’s old and doesn’t have the newer features of the Sony XM3 or B&W PX7. The Sony’s sound more engaging and full than the QC35 while the QC35 sounds more balanced and clearer but not as engaging.
      I’ve tried the Momentum’s when EQ’d and yes the sound is more balanced but the mediocre noise cancelling makes them go from sounding different to the XM3 to sounding worse when commuting in loud environments. Which is why they are not in top 3 within this category.
      The PX7 sounds more nuanced than the Momentum’s thanks to the bigger soundstage allowing more of the instruments to breathe along with superior noise cancelling and longer battery life. The Momentum’s quite simply cannot compete.
      The Sony’s are probably still the best ANC headphones for most people thanks to the lower price, best noise cancelling, warm and forgiving sound while still being quite detailed that’s also adjustable tonally, stellar comfort and vast array of features except dual Bluetooth pairing.
      The PX7 is hands down the most well rounded ANC headphone out on the market now tho.

      Thank you. I agree with you mostly. I did find the 1000xm3 very warm and easy to listen to (very relaxing). I just hated that it didn't have enough visceral bass impact for me. Maybe the midbass was drowning out the subbass? As far as clarity, I was able to EQ them to achieve a great level of clarity (so that wasn't a problem). Just wanted the bass to be tighter and more visceral and the soundstage a little bigger.
      Can't wait to try the px7. I'm hyped.

Voices don't sound too great through them, the treble is unremarkable, and the bass isn't deep enough for my liking. The headphones aren't very loud, and there isn't even much of a soundstage for an over the ear pair of headphones. They are also too bulky for outdoor use, IMO. The worst thing about these headphones is their flimsy feel that makes me worry about breaking them every time I pick them up with one hand instead of two. This is unacceptable for a £300+ pair of headphones. The one positive is that these headphones will keep your ears warm in the winter.
