  • TODAY WE CIDR OUR FIRST GROUP OF EWES FOR OUT OF SEASON BREEDING!
I will show you the tools I use, how to use them and why I even try to breed ewes out of season when it would be easier to breed them in the fall.
Only first, we have a minor disruption over at the lamb barn.
Remind me I really need to invest in some new GATES! LOL.

This is why I love sharing your life. I learn a lot! At 71 yrs of age, I still love learning new things. You love your animals and take such good care of them. Bless you for that. If I had the money, I would gladly build you a bigger finishing barn across the road.

Hello you do a tremendous job raising your sheep. About 60 years ago I bottle fed many lambs, l was 4 to 5 years old. During lambing season every day my grandfather would complain about 3 to 4 still born or frozen lambs when you ad that up it is far higher percentage. Do not lessen to any of the idiots, take care Michael

There's a local buffalo ranch where I'm located that we pass every time we visit my mother in law. I have my children convinced that whenever they don't see the buffaloes out when we pass, that they're getting their wings trimmed.

I have a buffalo farm near me too. My sons to young to know, but when my nephew sees it he wants everyone to stop to see them. If he can't see them he asks where they are, and he's just told that they are inside today.
Eventually I want to stop and get some buffalo meat from the place.

Love this video Sandi!!! Love how you explained the numbers about the finishing barn capacity and how you maintain cash flow, it's all by working your numbers backwards down the the lamb per ewe. It's a lot of work running a farm, and an operation such as yours, has a lot of behind the scenes that we still don't know about, which are none of our business really. You show us so much of your life and it's impressive!!! Thanks for everything you do!!

The mention of a break out took me back about 30 years when I was fresh out of college and managing my first horse barn. The home I was living in (on the owner's property) was about a half mile from the barn and gates to the many pastures.
Without fail, if we had a serious thunderstorm, ice(rare in North Carolina), or a hurricane there would be a break out. At 2am, cozy in my bed, I would hear the clip clop of hooves on the pavement. Anywhere from 15 to 25 equine escapees would be merrily trotting down the road. If I got lucky, i could get a spare halter and lead rope on one, hop on and round the rest up. If unlucky, I had to gather them on foot.
Soooo glad I no longer have to do that - many other poor young souls have had that forlorn duty since then!

CID-R ing CID-R's are like sheep tampons for breeding. We personally don't use them. But I get the concept. We had our rams tested for fertility 2 days ago, results should be here by Friday. Mother Nature is being a tough lady this year, heat wise, darn little for rain. We are going to have a tough year, financially.

The CIDR seems like tje equivalent of Lupron in humans. Lupron suppressed GSH and quiets ovaries down. It's used in women with endometriosis to keep them from having periods and slow the disease down. It's also used in a lot of IVF protocols to just kind of bring everything to a baseline so the doctors have total control over the ovulation with the second round of meds that stimulates the ovaries to make lots of eggs.

We were involved in broad acre farming. Simply this means flocks were in the 100s.
First time lambs were in the yards was for weaning..
Second time for tagging, ear marking and injections.
Third time to separate ewe lambs and ram lambs and castration. Fourth time shearing.
Subsequently for drenching, crunching, shearing and so on.
At that time our tags had 3 digit numbers.
Over a number of years the ewe lambs with concurrent or extremely close numbers when through the race, were shorn, were treated etc.at the same time.
This was far more frequent that coincidence.
So in short lambs/ewes do have friends and will stick by them even if farmers may want to separate them. Somehow even if they end up in separate shearer’s catching pens they will end up being shorn together.
This can happen year after year. Yes, it is fascinating.

  • @joanzeleski-martin6982

here's an idea to quicken the work flow with the cidrs...have a cup or glass about the depth of the cidr device. Fill it with the lube. Then once the device is loaded just stick that end into the cup/glass. As long as you don't leave the loaded device in the lube for very long there shouldn't be a concern of "melting" the cidr or altering it's concentration. That would reduce the time and effort in making sure the device is lubed up. Another idea for work flow if to have a work table on wheels to keep all the supplies you are using. Then you could move the table with all the stuff closer to where you are actually inserting at the time. The wheels would probably have to be larger than usual to be able to maneuver over the stuff on the floor of a barn. That would make it easier to move also. Perhaps you have already tried all these things.

Poor Billy! He looked so sad when you kept walking. “But....but...but.....you’re supposed to pet me!” Serious question, I just love Billy, Ruby and Popcorn. Popcorn missed the last breeding, will you keep her if she misses again? I would be so sad if she went to market. I know, they need to pay their way so to speak, but it’s Popcorn! Ya know?

Popcorn and Ruby are pets and she will keep them even if they miss twice. Other ewes aren't attached and they get shipped after two breeding and no pregnancy.

Sandi I know you have fans but have you considered a couple of industrial floor fans to keep the air moving on you and the sheep. Maybe the rams too.

Did you check the fertility on the newer Steele rams? Especially the one that lost his wool.

The CIDR is like an IUD. Very interesting.

I think it's in front of the uterus, not inside. But looks like an iud! I looked it up last time those came up on the channel.

IUDs are inserted into the uterus as a contraceptive device. CDRS are a hormone impregnated device designed to bring the ewe into oestrous so that she will ovulate and get pregnant.

Hi Sandi. Contact Rebecca Rhodes from the Justin Rhodes channel. She wears coveralls that are made of hemp that breathe. She loves them and recommends them to other farmers.

In this heat no long -legged coverall is going to be "cool". I think Sandi already wears the same type.

Do you give them prenatal vitamins? I love watching your videos. I love how you give us so much information. I have learned so much from you. I could listen to you all day long. But that would wear you out even more so we're not going to ask that of you. Thank you for being open to suggestions and posting so much stuff for us to watch. I love love love it

The ewes are fed a freshening ration containing vitamins and minerals to help this process.
