When my husband and I built our home, we put a full bath right next to the door to our garage just so we could throw a baby calf in the tub to warm up. We know what ranching entails and every part of our life revolves around it.

The number one rule in emergency medicine in regards to hypothermia, no one is dead until they are warm and dead. Great team effort in trying to save the calf. Number one started life looking and acting very healthy, unfortunately life can take dramatic turns.

The only way to be able to afford being small is to sell directly to the consumer. That takes quite a bit of capital too. The regulations are expensive to meet too.

I kept rootin' for that little fella.....what did, he not lay in the hay, and he just got wicked cold? Was Mom not attentive to him, or don't you know? Anyway, Another day on the farm....Your small ranch is perfect....can you imagine doing this with a large herd? Nope.....even if you wanted to, there is just so much that you can do. The ending of the video was a surprise. You can be assured that you did your best. That was a bit of a "downer" after all the effort that you and Erin put into saving #1. You showed it like it is. Thank you for caring for all your animals. It will be much nicer to see this storm pass. There is a gospel song that comes to mind, "Till the storm passes by". (It is best when a quartet sings it.) There are times when we all get to the place where we cannot see that the storm will pass by. We felt it in this video. Thank you for sharing.

I had so much emotions going. When it stood up, it brought a tear to my eye. I was wonder how it turned out, then the print came across the screen, and so sad I was. I'm sure you guys also. So much loving went into trying to save him. Your love for the cattle is abundant. McKinzie is going to be a cow girl I think. She has that interest in what is going. Thanks for sharing.

Do they hand out a "Best Rancher Ever Award" because Mike your a hero along with Erin. For a 17 day old calf it seems it was not getting enough food to keep itself warm from its mama. WOW ~ I thought it was crossing the bridge too. What a gift. Life is so fragile.

I have been calving cows for a long-time, if you have a fresh cow whose udder doesn't show being full of milk, she probably can't provide enough milk . One of those things that come with experience I have had it happen to. You do a good job kept going forward

Mike thanks for sharing, I can only imagine all the emotions you went through. It’s got to be hard, even more so since your rebuilding the herd and doing a different way of selling your cattle.
Prayers and McKenzie is so sweet and adorable. About made me tear up when you told her and the response she gave. But I know it’s life and death in livestock business
