USA Drop Bombshell On F1 After Leaked Documents!
Adrian Newey this, Adrian Newey that, we New-ey Adrian would be leaving a week ago and frankly until we get more information as to where he’s going to wind up in the new regulations or it it turns out that Newey was the Red Bull employee receiving raunchy WhatsApp messages from Horner, there’s really nothing more of substance to be said on the matter. So let’s talk about something very real that’s going on and is pertinent to the upcoming weekend shall we? Like how the weekend that the F1 circus rolls into Miami, the US Congress has decided to back Andretti’s corner and threaten in pretty plain words to make life very difficult on F1 and Liberty Media if they don’t play fair in the future. In a shocking twist, an American did not immediately go straight to litigation, but Michael Andretti seems to have gone one step beyond even that by bringing the American law makers themselves into the fold in a PR masterclass. The timing is perfect, with the very same race weekend that saw Andretti practically begging to get in to F1 all those years ago, now being the perfect platform to launch a new offensive and one that may not so easily be shrugged off in a dismissive press release.

Weird to see that once again US politicians decide to go against their own doctrine and try to "persuade" a business company to see things their way. What happened again to the US idea that "government should keep out of business and leave companies to do their own things"? Is that once again simply ignored because it's inconvenient in this situation?
The simple fact that Liberty Media is now the largest stakeholder in F1 doesn't mean that the US government has any say about how the F1 should be ran. Imagine the outrage in the US if the Japanese took a majority share in Indycar because Honda is a main contender in Indycar with its engines and all of a sudden demanded that Indycar should be forced to enter Japanese teams.
F1's position is based on previous bad experiences with US based teams showing no continuity: they came barging into F1 with much bragging and fanfare, utterly failing in reaching the targets they set for themselves and they either simply folded abruptly and left the or started incessantly whining that "they were being treated só unfair that they had no other choice than to leave F1."
Now I know many Americans try to argue that "European teams have done the same", but there is a big and obvious difference: European teams either buy out or start investing heavily into an existing team and when they fail to reach their targets, they sell off the team to the next interested party, meaning the team stays in F1, whereas with the US teams they've simply closed the doors and disappeared without a trace.

They should actually allow two Andretti teams to match how all the other teams work - one main team, one "farm" team. To combat Liberty's "competitive" point, one only has to look at all the "farm" teams. How many of them have won a race in the past 5 years? How competitive are they really?

Well, as a 50 year fan, you must be well aware that Liberty Media IS AN AMERICAN OWNED Entity. So, Liberty Media is in fact in violation of Anti Trust Laws. I dont like the way that its all going down either but I will say this. What does the FOM consider to be "Competitive?" If Andretti Cadillac goes out, in their first 2 years, and routinely puts the smack down on Williams and Haas, is that considered competitive?
Name one thing that Andretti did wrong in what they did to abide by the requirements to enter Formula 1? Do you you honestly feel that Andretti wouldn't bring value to the sport? Do you think its right to change the Concord agreement to 10 teams instead of the current 12 teams, just to keep a possible entrant from bringing in more exposure to the sport? Do you think Liberty Media should be making boatloads of money from the American Market without letting an American Team compete on equal footing? There are many issues that show a deliberate bias and I think thats wrong on many fronts? If you say they won't be competitive, then prove it on the track. Thats competitive just in its nature. Its actually refreshing for this to be happening and keeps the FOM honest.

Yes, all this is most unfortunate but we do have to expect this today with America having more skin in the game. One of my earliest memories of F1 was with Mario Andretti winning the F1 Championship in a Lotus back in 1978. Yes, 'inspirational' to my then 15 year old self and I then wanted him to win. In context, then perhaps the best thing today in all this is that Mario is still fit and active in what has since now become a multi generational family motorsport business and as one which takes his family name. However, when we look back to before this era then the Americans have always had their own motor racing series and categories. Can-Am, NASCAR and Indy immediately spring to mind. Even 'Indy' quarrelled and split into factions. Ok, America is their country and therefore their business 'turf' and so who can blame them for being 'protectionist' vis-a-vis we here in Europe? All that said, there is strong argument informing that the culture pursuant to which which Europeans and Americans respectively go about their motor racing is much like trying to mix oil with water. There is a strong argument that Europe has better managed and promoted motor racing over recent decades and this, seemingly, is perhaps why these Italian Americans today find with an envious and beady eye? All cars are created equal? An IROC series? Europe has focused much more in threading 'innovative engineering' into motor sport' whereas America has otherwise perhaps tended to 'dumb down' and instead focus more on the business side of things? The truth today is that the ICE is on the wane and, more is the pity, Formula E or similar categories are not yet more heavily invested in and promoted into becoming the new F1? All this informed then perhaps Endurance Racing delivers the best model as a way forward for F1? Historically we have had divisions between, say, a Le Mans series (today WEC) over here in Europe whilst with IMSA over in the states. Pretty much the same cars but otherwise separate competitions but with minor technical accomodations. There's already too many F1 races to keep the thing global and Asia today properly deserves its own series too - particulary in Japan but also now in Arabian lands and all these together with thier own local 'star' drivers. Maybe the current leadership at the FIA just doesn't have the vision nor else the elan to push all this forward? Meanwhile, F1 is properly 'European'. It should have 80% of races here and the price of admission needs to be pegged back to better deliver in terms of accessibility. Yes, 'guest' races in North America and eleswhere. However 'global' reach is 'over reach' and this, and in truth, on an individual human level as a majot limiting factor. On this then just ask Max Verstappen who today finds 'in the thick of things'.

Andreotti appears to have no proven case in law for his claims, or are they his claims ?
The truth is like the Neuburg ring thousands of people per year want to race on this circuit which provides critical dangers for participants on limited infrastructure. In free market conditions it is normal for the wide verity of companies associated with F1 do not have any plans to expand the sport at this time as it is unaffordable infrastructure which limits participation at any event.
It is ironic that Andreotti has options in joining other series, indicating motorsport has options for his entry which he has declined.
The true motivation is to take control of the technology within the sport and create a cartel or antitrust monopoly to be moved to the states where it will fester and die as a sport.
The usa has a very distorted view of antitrust laws across the world with Google having a monopoly,, Microsoft, intel, apple the list goes on of usa monopolies..
The usa grand prix are becoming very unpopular with the fans and personnel, which has already seen a lack of racing interest in the USA and its controlling politics more comparable with that in china.
Its ironic that Andreotti is been used by GM to buy into the sport as Ford hopes to buy Red Bull Austria shares.
This is a problem which is comparable to find limited slots at London Heathrow due to all the slots already been taken. The irony here is that Andreotti is using politics to distort and create a monopoly to gain business advantage which he is arguing against......the press is exposing this man s desperation to return to the sport for personal reasons not real industry value.

The big thing is with this is that the teams get a say whether or not a new team can come in. This type of action is a clear antitrust law violation. For mlb and nba or nfl if the teams had a decision if a new team could join or not then it would be in violation. But those organizations don’t run it like how F1 runs it and it’s solely upon those over the organization and teams have no say in it.
Liberty media meet with teams to discuss letting Andretti in and all but 1 team said they would let them join, this type of voting system can be seen as an antitrust violation. And liberty media being a US company has to follow US antitrust laws and if they don’t the US government has the power to shut down liberty media and with it F1 if it came to it. But it will never come to that but if liberty media doesn’t comply it can result in some pretty aggressive actions to be taken by the US government.

The dominant teams of the 21st century, Red Bull and Mercedes-Benz, both built on pre-existing teams, went years before becoming the powers they are now. They simply want to avoid dividing up the "pie" any more, ignoring the increase in interest in the American market they so crave. As this congressional action shows there are also issues of protecting the European masters of the F1 teams from US competition. F1 is also suffering from the the limited field. This year there are NO new drivers in the field. Popular young drivers in GP2 are being forced to go to sports cars or Indy cars. Good for those series, but bad for F1. But the issue legally is that teams can vote whether or not to let a team in, this is a clear violation of us antitrust laws. And what congress was pointing out was that GM is making a push for the European market and f1 is currently controlled by European manufacturers who will naturally try to push GM out as a competitor (and they did go to teams and asked about letting Andretti-Cadillac in and all but one rejected it). And with liberty media being a US company they have to abide by US law. If they don’t the US government has the power to shut down liberty media and with it moto gp and F1, it won’t come to this but this is a big deal can result in large consequences if liberty media doesn’t act fast.
