    Glad to see someone actually complement the story in this game. Sure it has some familiar elements and is simpler than what you'd get in Final Fantasy, but it's delivery is terrific. The slow drip-feed of new information is very well paced and there's tons of foreshadowing with varying subtlety. It's rarely too unexpected or too obvious, it hits just right throughout.
    I love how it opens with such a simple premise and it takes hours of gameplay before the more typical high-stakes JRPG plot slowly emerges. Some people have complained about how the beginning is slow, but I much preferred this over the usual "huge info dump early on and then a bunch of nothing until the crazy end" JRPG structure.

    As someone who grew up in the SNES era of JRPGs I became more and more alienated and disappointed by the current state of the gaming industry after the PS2 era. And then suddenly a little Falcom game (Trails in the Sky) came around and made me remember this unconditional trust and love I had towards a game developer in my childhood. Since then I've played every Falcom game available in English. I can't stress out enough how Falcom to me are now what Square used to be in their Golden Age. Thanks to Falcom I see the current gaming industry in a much more positive light and Ys VIII is definitely another masterpiece of this small 50 employee development studio.
    I really hope Tokyo Xanadu and of course Trails also gets a Switch release. I don't own the system, but the more people get to play Nihon Falcom games the better!

    My mate in America is a huge Ys nerd and wanted me to get into the series, so he sent me the COLLECTORS EDITION for the Switch version (After taking out the letter opener which he bought just for that.)
    I was hesitant at first considering it said "RPG", but then i realised it was an Action RPG, so I put the game in my Switch and started playing at 5pm with the curtains shut (This detail is important.)
    I was running around the Lombardia, not thinking much of the characters after talking to all of them, then I encountered the tentacles attacking the ship. I fought back at them, then the ship sank. One beautifully done intro later, Adol was lying on the beach, I was ready to play some more.
    That's when Sunshine Coastline hit my ears.
    The music spoke to me, this wasn't just another Action RPG, this was THE Action RPG where you explore the unknown with Adol!
    I kept playing for hours, only stopping to get a drink and use the loo, it wasn't until my stomach growls became too much, that I looked outside to realise that it's still daylight, so I checked the time.
    It was 7am.
    I played the game non-stop for 14 hours without even realising, I was way too invested into it and was having way too much fun to even notice. Of all the games I've played, non of them have managed to hook me in like that before!

    Ys 8 is one of the greatest games i’ve ever played, i could honestly go on for hours about how much i love the game and my experience with it, but the video title itself explains it, it’s just a masterpiece; Falcom is incredible at what they do, their games ranging from their notable Ys and Legend of Heroes, to the music which is pure ear candy, honest to god hoping Adol gets into smash soon as that’d be the biggest way to get people into this game, the ys series, and falcom games itself (smash did the same with snk and as a longtime snk fan it made me so happy lol) so yeah everything about Ys 8 ranging from its gameplay, music, story, characters, world design, art style, and enjoyability earns the title of the best Action JRPG that i’ve ever played

  • @Zidro512

    Just beat the game tonight and came on CZcams for other opinions.
    I loved the game. Aside the combat and music, I really loved the story and I got the true ending and man.. I felt sad and happy at the same time. A game that can produce emotions like this game, imo, really make for an exceptional experience.
    For jrpgs, characters and story have always been the most important thing for me. But the combat is really fun too. So they nailed ev erything.
    I'm shocked how much I ended up loving this and can't stop thinking about it. I'm not even an avid jrpg player, I have played a few this gen but mostly played them in the snes and ps1 era.

    Ys VIII was one of the most genuinely sublime experiences I've ever had with a JRPG. I was 100% engaged with the game 100% of the time, even up until the final dungeon and boss- which is almost always where I start to lose interest in RPGs. I truly believe Lacrimosa of Dana should go down in history as one of the best in its genre.

    • @Walamonga1313
      @Walamonga1313 Před 2 lety +1

      This. After 50+ hours, I usually start to tune out on JRPGs. Even more so if I beat the game and there's a postgame dungeon, I usually just lose interest. Not with this game, Ys VIII is so damn fun that I just wanted to keep playin. Finished it today, along with that extra dungeon. Those wasps were annoying af, but still doesn't stain the incredible game experience.

  • @BondedgeXD
    @BondedgeXD Před 4 lety +9

    I bought as many JRPGs on the Switch as soon as I got it just 2 months ago.
    The only game I could play without stopping was Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and thought I couldn't find a game that could keep me seated as it did. I tried Dragon Quest XI, Fire Emblem 3 Houses, Some Disgaea and other titles I can't even remember the name to. Then I saw Ys VIII on sale on the Eshop and was my very first non-cartridge game.
    I relived the experience of sitting down and playing a game from start to kinda-finish (still playing) and just loving it.
    It somehow reminisced an experience I had with Mega man Legends 1 where you build friendship with the townspeople and how I feel so involved with them emotionally. It's a weird comparison but that's how special Ys VIII is!

    Marvelous review, Cullen! It's easy to see how much you love this game, as well as the great reasons for it. Very informative, entertaining, well-done, well-written and well-constructed! You even got several laughs out of me.
    Several years ago, before Ys VIII was localized, I stumbled upon the BGM for the song The Sibylline Road. At this point I had only played Ys Origin (Three times, duh), but this song mesmerized me. Beautiful, mysterious... I had no idea of the context, but that didn't matter. I had a sort of connection with the game from then on that was difficult to explain. Two and a half more Ys games--And around seven Falcom games in total--later, I got VIII on PC for my birthday, feeling giddy, and am now 16+ hours in. I expected it to be a great title to play until my copy of a certain Atlus JRPG arrives, nothing much more than that. After seeing this review, though... Man, I've got some good stuff waiting for me, huh?
    I loved the review very much! Definitely worth more than a like! :D

      @@starscream2 Depends how you play games. If you find the portability good then Switch. But performance-wise, the PS4 runs better than the Switch version.
      PS4 is clearer textures and 60 fps. Switch is 30 fps and enemies in the distance are lower than that. That being said, I play more on my Switch because of my lifestyle. I can't play an 80 hour JRPG in front of the TV much anymore.
      Also, the Switch version comes with all the DLC included. PS4 you have to buy extra and one of the DLCs isn't available anymore on PS Store (Adol's Silver Armor costume). So again, it is up to you to decide. Most people go with PS4 version, but I think the Switch version is perfectly playable.

    Beautiful review! One of my favorite gaming experiences. Do implore people to play this title. Deserves all the love and praise it gets. I do have a few problems with it. One of them being how the combat is. Wish it was as detailed and complex as other action battle system I encountered, in and outside of battle. Certainly this won't be for everyone who don't enjoy action-packed gaming. Overall, the combat is addictive and fun as heck. Dana is deserving of being one of the best female characters and protagonist. Gosh. Her story brought me to tear. I did suffer a bit of a withdrawal after defeating the game. Went out of my way to obtain the true ending. Was a must to do so.
    To add, this game became to be one my favorite rpgs on the ps4 from these recent times. Together with Tales of Berseria(my absolute favorite), NieR: Automata and Persona 5, they make it the Best RPG Quartet on the console and from this era of gaming in general. Now, if only I can find another one to transform them into a Quintet, that would be lovely. Would add Odin Sphere: Leithrasir, but that is a remake(one that is a masterpiece). Rather have new games from 2016 and up to make that happen.

    Honestly, I came to this review and expected to leave it with weird feelings just like I did with most reviews I have watched on CZcams (because either the reviewers do not make proper research or haven't played enough to judge in the first place). Yours, however, was one of the few I enjoyed. Indeed, Falcom outdid themselves with this one. (and you outdid yourself with the part with the bacon! XD) Also, Hummel is my biggest mood. Also, I hope I don't seem like a creep, but I love your voice.

      Your English isn't bad at all, thank you so much for the praise! Its comments like this that encourage me to keep working on these videos, I'm glad people appreciate the work put into this (which is personally my favorite video I've made). I'm hoping Ys IX can at least be half the game VIII was.

  • @studio_1
    @studio_1 Před 2 lety +1

    Found this video after finishing Ys VIII and making it one of my favourite games in the series. In fact, I started playing the Ys series around the end of May. I was curious about the series, so I started with Ys 1 & 2 Chronicles, and it somehow ended up leaving a large impact on me, despite going in expecting nothing special.
    After that, I marathoned through Ys 3,4,6,7 and now have finished 8. I still need to play Origin, but I’m just waiting for the PC release of Ys 9 at this point.
    Getting back to the point, I enjoyed this game a lot for the reasons you bring up in this video, but I also want to say how rewarding it was to play these games…somewhat in order. (I did play 6 before 4, so…whoops.)
    Seeing how the series evolved, how it was able to create a world that feels real and expansive, despite the limited technology, all the little callbacks and continuity, and how every game, no matter what…always has a Pikkard farm. This is a very important detail, and I had better see this in the next games, otherwise I WILL riot!
    But seriously though, this journey has been a really fun one, and getting to be there alongside Adol on each has made the Ys series one of my favourites of all time. I’m glad I found your channel and this franchise, and I’m looking forward for whatever comes next for both.
    …Also, glad we both stan Adol.

    I need to finally unwrap this game and start playing it. Great review, makes me so happy to hear the gushing for Falcom. I got the Turbo CD player along with Ys Book 1 & 2 for my 15th birthday when it was new. I've loved Falcom for most of my life, and always so happy for a Western release. I'll be picking up Ys IX, which they just revealed is being translated for the West as well ! I'd better get cracking on VIII !

  • @Thunderhawk51
    @Thunderhawk51 Před 5 lety +2

    So true. The music is, and has always been, out of this world with Falcom! Just pure eargasm throughout the whole series!
    My first touch with Ys was The Ark Of Napishtim and I absolutely loved it. Then I played Seven and loved it even more. And then Lacrimosa Of Dana... How can their games simply improve every single time so much!?
    I'm currently playing Celceta for the first time and I can already tell why most people say it's one of the best Ys games ever made. I mean, the quality of these game is just insane. I can't rank them because they are all 100/100, simple as that.
    Best games on Earth, hands down.

    Best ARPG in gaming in my opinion, but I'm a Falcom fan boy who's favourite game of all time is the Crossbell duology. Falcom continue to out do themselves with every new Ys and Kiseki (The Legend of Heroes) title. Best developer in gaming, easily. Great review! Looking forward to your Ys:IV review and future Falcom content.

    I love Dana. She's a strong character who happens to be a female and not a strong FEMALE character. She's strong inside and out yet still shows her femininity unlike some games I know with female leads.
    In addition, the story is great. If it's just the story of Adol and his exploration of the island learning about it and finding Dana then I would have definitely dropped it but nope, they added Dana's story during the Eternian era. That was the thing that got me finish the game till the end. I wanted to know what happened and how it happened. You can really feel the emotions the characters during the era felt + the atmosphere is just spot on.

    [NO SPOILER] This game is truly a great game in ps4, and it makes include Ys Celcela into my wishlist. On the early 40% of the story, it's nothing but merely survival, player may feel bored, but as the story progresses beyond that, lots and lots of mystery about the island and its happenings popping out and it motivated me to progress the story, the only thing that makes me feel kind of disappointed was the ending, it feels all the plots are written to give a boss fight to the team, but at least all the mysteries were well explained logically in the end, just it didnt end as i expected or wanted.
    The side quests of the game are controlled extremely well in the way the side quests in every single moment will be enough to keep you fun but less than that would frustrates you. To 100% the game for platinum, you need to constantly teleport back to quest board to take a look at if there's any side quests update to the board. Every single item counts into trophy, so when exploring the map, be more careful on tresure chest, collection point and special items (light blue prism shaped icon on map).
    The best thing of this game is the music, it is truly a masterpiece, almost every new map or place have their own music, and most of them are burning, awesome and brainwashing. I played it two times for the platinum and still want to replay it for the music and a bigger challenge in higher difficulty mode.
    For the gameplay part, please master either Flash Move or Flash Guard, else you will feel extremely difficult for the gameplay, though after mastery of these techniques, most bosses in the game feel too easy to defeat and feels like all the bosses are the same (I even have to force myself to do no-potion run on hard mode), only a few special bosses are differently designed which are damn fun and challenging to beat, you will most likely keep dying before victory, provided you dont flush the battle with potions and potions.
    Sorry about writing this long review, but i really liked this game and want to spread the correct unbiased review to make more people fans of falcom or ys.
