    You might know this already, but the style of Ys VIII and Celceta is derived from Ys Seven, which was quite a departure from the original formula. To experience Ys as it was from its beginning in 1987 to the release of Ys Seven in 2009, you should play the games from Ys 1 and 2 up until Ys 6, including Origins. That might sound like a lot, but these are short games you finish in about 10 hours.

    i thought the atmosphere / exploration/ and music all elevated this to a really great game. a lot of the side stuff you didn't like i also thought contributed to the deserted island feel. i thought the slower story development in the first part of the game made it more mysterious and added to the need to explore. i thought you would dig this one. haha. ah well. like your channel and reviews.

      Its weird. In the first 4-5 hours, i was bored out of my fucking SKULL and I HATED the setting, atmosphere and just the entire idea of the fuckin island and finding castaways just made me want to take an impact drill to my eye socket. So i dropped it. I quit playing for a few months, but i was craving Ys so i replayed some of the Ys games i have. Then, i finally just said fuckitt and got IX. I had waiting to beat VIII, but i couldnt get into VIII so fuckit. I loved IX it clicked immediately for me and I’m probably bout 10 hours in. Well at some point, i booted VIII back up and now im further in that game than i am in IX. I have no idea why, but it just…clicked. And i fucking love it, so i dont know .

    My favourite action RPG of all time, go play it. Actually, as someone who's played the whole series, go play everything, you're missing out.
    A couple of points tho:
    - I will commend you for correctly pronouncing Adol's name correctly, as opposed to many others who say Ay-dol.
    - I also agree on the epilogue bit, it's so badly executed, lol (though the credits sequence gets me feelsy everytime). But hey, I still prefer it over Celceta's non-existent ending, ngl.
    - Just incase you didn't know, Celceta's Flash Moves and Guards have a way more forigiving time window.
    - "Celceta had a fixed camera where you could see everything on-screen" - Try fighting the super boss (the guardian of the forest thing) and then try saying that, lol. Also in regards to the camera, I noticed you were using lock-on a lot when talking about it, sometimes it works much better without doing that.
    - And finally the OST. Believe it or not, the OST from this game is actually my favourite in all of gaming, which is saying a lot. So yeah, at least go listen to the tunes.

      I just finished Memories of Celceta and felt so betrayed by the non-ending. I watched the screen transition to Adol's journal and thought "there is no way they wouldn't tell me what the characters went on to do after the ending, right?" And then they literally did just that. One of the laziest endings I've ever experienced for a game.

    This is a game I honestly really liked but lost drive to complete. I'm near the end of the game (in chapter 6 I think?) and while it's a really good game that I had fun with, I just feel like I had no desire to go back to it cuz I felt like I already played enough of it. Watching this review definitely revived my interest in finishing it. I skipped the spoiler spot but watching this made me remember how interested I am in seeing the how the game ends and if the castaways really do make it back home :)

    So some context: I played Ys8 in August and it reminded me that I actually really like this series and I was missing a bunch, so I went back to Ys1+2 and played through the whole series, finishing Seven just this past week. I definitely agree with some of what you're saying, but I found 8 to be better than Celceta in every way. I think the exploration loop is better because of how it ties so directly into growing Castaway Village, and 9 may change this but for now I think 8 has the best music in the series followed by Seven. I really liked the cast of characters so much more in 8, and you barely even get to see Dogi in Celceta all. But if you liked Celceta better then 8 then you'd probably really love Seven which plays nearly identically, just with less polygons and more straightforward exploration and, shockingly, no shipwreck or falling overboard or memory loss of any sort - a series first.
    I'm definitely with you on Ys 10 though. Given how many girls seem to want to throw themselves at Adol throughout the series he's only got eyes for his bara bestie Dogi, clearly.

    I loved this game quite a bit. I can't argue your takes, though - they are valid.
    Ys has always been a flawed but fun series. One of my very favorites, but I'm always hoping for a *bit* more modern implements with every new release - that Falcom may take a bit more from what it's peers have done better. As much as I adore them, Falcom almost always feels a little behind the times with Ys and LoH series. Sometimes, it adds a certain amount of charm and nostalgia to a bygone approach to RPGs. Other times? The frustration can be hard to overcome - such as the cameras and a few of the story beats in Ys VIII.
    Happy Holidays!

  • @DeltathRiylaan
    @DeltathRiylaan Před 3 lety +19

    SPOILERS:
    I think it's worth considering that the idea of it all being a dream is mostly not true. This isn't a dream episode of a TV show or Mario 2 where the main character wakes up and it was just a dream and never happened. This isn't even the JRPG/anime trope of a character not actually being real but being imaginary or brought to life through the power of dreams. In the world of Ys, reality itself... real, legitimate, actual reality is a realm that exists because of the power of the Goddess's mind. Adol and friends aren't going to wake up and realize they aren't real. They're real. All of reality, all past, present and future is this realm created by the Goddess's mind. It's not really any different than any other creation myth, it just has a slight nuanced bit of individuality.
    I'm just saying, that seems to be the main reason you didn't like the ending. But that isn't really what the story is. Adol isn't any less real than he was before and it isn't all a dream in the traditional sense of the word.
    Oh, as for my first Ys game. It was Ys I on the Famicom.

      @DeltathRiylaan Před 3 lety +5

      @@Taikaru Well, and to be honest, I DESPISE "it was all a dream" storylines. They're the absolute worst. But it's definitely not that. Reality birthing into existence from the mind of a goddess slumbering, and that being totally real and actual, is not the same as it being someone's night time fake fantasy. If none of it were real, Dana wouldn't have been able to replace the goddess and maintain reality with her new found power. If it were a dream in the literal sense, everything would have been fake and would have ceased to exist.

    • @DeltathRiylaan
      @DeltathRiylaan Před 3 lety

      I would say there's a chance you might like Origins because it's a decent game, but you won't like it because of any similarities that it has with Ys VIII. Origins is like an arcade beat score based beat 'em up (or twin stick shooter, depending on the character you play) with a single dungeon tower crawl, basically. It's not bad, it's just a totally different genre and has a low focus on story.
      Also, what story IS there is almost entirely pointless unless you've played Ys I+II because it's a direct story prequel to those and fills in some holes and gives some small revelations. Just saying.

    I just finished Ys 8 too, and I agree with a lot of things you said. However, you mentioned they pulled a FFX, which is not accurate. The "dream" in FFX is not the dream like we have in real life because "Dream" Zanarkand still has a physical location near Baaj temple. All the things happened in FFX, still happened. Basically guys like Tidus and his dad are "Dreams", which are basically Aeons (it's just the terminologies can be confusing), Yu Yevon use the remaining citizens of "Real" Zanarkand, turn them into faiths in order to preserve his city as a memory, which effectively create a 'Dream" Zanarkand. He created 'Sin" which is effectively Yu Yevon's armour and basically Sin's goal is to ensure no one finds out about "Dream" Zanarkand, so that's why in the game, the "machina" were seen as taboo in Spira. So I don't agree Ys 8 pulled a "FFX".

    Ys 8 was my first and for now only Ys game. I loved the combat but also struggled with the Flash guarding/Moving and the lock-on, but the extremly hyped music made so that i didnt really care. I loved the building your Town aspect and that was also the part that hooked me until the story decided to get going. I just act liked the ending didnt happen.
    But what i HATED was the Raids and Hunts. Everytime I saw the Icon glowing i just was drained of every joy i felt , I am just not the type for being scored like that and also for defending something.
    the Thing i loved that most was unlocking all skills for all character and learning more about the combat and gettin better, and Dana Solo adventures are so much fun combat for me

I agree about the slow start, although it grabbed me a lot sooner, towards the end of chapter 2 for spoilery reasons. I have played a bit of Celceta since and it hasn't grabbed me in the same way. Now it could be a dream in the same way that in the Chuthllu Mythos all of reality is the dream of an unknowable elder god...
    But ***Spoilers*** the consequences of this game was the stopping of the cycle and the rising of Dana as the godess of these events. (Which story wise makes sense as Dana could not be Adol's long term love intrest given how the Ys stories go.)
    ----
    I felt the game was a (very worthwhile) slow burn. It starts with just trying to survive...then running into dinosaurs...then basicly finding the equivalent of Atlantis. I really liked it and thought it worked really well.

    My first Ys game was Ys 3 on the SNES, and I'm also the odd one out; that's the black sheep of the series. I was super into it, and managed to be in a Kay Bee Toys when they were liquidating their SEGA Master System stuff; the console was $25, and games were $5 each. I'd had one since 1987, but I saw the first Ys game there! For $5! I was so excited, and then... that bump system. I've never loved the system, but once I got the hang of it, it was serviceable against regular enemies; the bosses were a nightmare. 2 sorta fixed this by giving you a fireball spell, which works great against bosses... except the last 2 - the hardest 2 that you also can't out-grind - are immune to the magic you've gotten really used to using. 3 was sidescrolling, and it was great, having a pretty huge moveset for the time, but 4 went back to the same old system. 5 added the attack button back in, and a jump, even though it was still overhead, but I think the series got REALLY good with 6. 6, Oath in Felghana (3 remake), and Origin all run in more-or-less the same engine, and they're great; if you wind up liking Origin, you'd probably enjoy the other 2, at least when it comes to gameplay; Origin has the best soundtrack out of the bunch. I haven't played any others in the series, yet, but either 7 or the Genesis version of 3 will be next for me.

    I'm a big Ys fan, but kind of agree with you on finding Ys8 subpar... though disagree on a lot of the reasons. Things I agree with: the flash dodge/block mechanic timing always seemed off to me too, and the auto-target sucked.
    Otherwise I actually thought the plot started strong and then got less interesting. I was just way more engaged with the early finding crewmates, mystery of the Ripper, etc stuff. The whole "save the world from magical evolution thing" was just too abstract for me -- plus that ending, as you said.
    Music rocked as usual, but was far from my favorite of the series.
    And...eh, I guess it was mostly just the gameplay that brought it down for me. Fun, yes. But also janky and unrefined in some ways. Nearly unlimited menu healing, tons of same-y feeling skills, etc.
    I started my Ys journey with Oath in Felghana (well, technically SNES 3, but we don't talk about that) and its still by far my favorite in terms of gameplay, music, and story. I highly suggest you check it out before giving up on the series. Origins has a similar gameplay style and is good, but it doesn't quite hit the same spot as Felghana for me.

    I'm really surprised you didn't like this game that much. I don't agree with everything you said cuz I personally really enjoyed all of the things you thought were bloated. Hunts, raids, fishing, finding and bonding with castaways and just the world exploration alone were all pretty good. Also didn't have as many issues with the combat that you did and I'm pretty sure there was a setting in the options menu that had something to do with the targetting system. Despite all of this, I lost the drive to finish the game LOL. I feel like maybe it was because the progression of the game was starting to feel very formulaic.
    Seriously though its interesting to see an opinion of someone who didn't like the game too much as opposed to most people ended up loving it. You're opinion is 100% valid.
    Also a tip, for Flash Guarding, you can just hold the R1 button (i'm assuming that's the button for flash guard on PS4 cuz I play on Switch) at the correct time to perform it. Once I read about that somewhere online, it became far more easier to do.

    I'm currently playing through Celceta after having played through Ys VIII and Ys IX. I find not being able to control the camera annoying, but am enjoying the story more than I thought I would.
    I think you should play Ys IX, the story is a lot more streamlined compared to VIII and has a good ending (I think there's one extra boss you have to kill to get the good ending and they make it almost unavoidable). I honestly think you'll enjoy it.
    They also refined the combat from VIII and the new monstrum abilities make it really fun to traverse the city. I feel like I can safely say IX has the best combat in the series. The game is split up into chapters, but it's more to introduce a character and complete their arc. There's no disconnect like there is in VIII. I also think you'll like the fact IX is more similar to Celceta when it comes to characters since you don't have to hunt for them. There will be actual missions to do that will then end up with the NPCs joining you (plus it's fun having a bar as a base of operations). The only affinity stuff is basically giving the character a gift that you will buy in a shop as you unlock them. There are also some fun call backs to VIII and Celceta in the game too.
    The only bad part is if you like different outfits for the characters, you'll have to buy the digital deluxe edition on the Playstation store to get them all because there are a handful you can't get any other way.
    I heard for Ys X they're going to be trying something new with the combat since after IX their current system has pretty much reached the pinnacle and there's not much else they can do with it.

    • @Magus427
      @Magus427 Před 3 lety

      Haha, I tried the demo of 9 too and hated it as well. I felt the camera was all over the place, the wall running wasn't really controllable, and I kept falling in pits or getting turned around because of the camera. I thought I made a mistake pre-ordering the game. However, after actually playing the game, I can safely say it's an awful demo that will probably turn more people off from trying it.
      In the actual game, you've had Adol for a bit so you're used to his monstrum power and you've probably run up a bunch of buildings throughout the city with White Cat so you have an actual feel for their abilities. In fact, the 1st dungeon has you only using Adol's abilities so you get used to them (I think that's what they should've put in the demo). Playing through the demo dungeon in the normal game, I now understood the context where if there's an arrow on a wall pointing up, you should run up that wall (and running up others doesn't always work out). All the dungeons in the game where you have to run up a wall are setup like this. I ended up having a better experience in the demo dungeon in the actual game after playing the first handful of hours. I can't say it was my favorite dungeon, but at least I was able to get around it and didn't feel frustrated.
      One thing I should mention about Ys 8 (having played Ys 8 on both the Switch and PS4), is the issue you had with timing those flash moves and guards might be related to the game. I believe Celceta runs at 30fps and I know Ys 8 on PS4 runs at 60fps. The Switch version of Ys 8 runs at 30fps like Celceta does. The timing for executing those moves in each of those versions is/feels different because of this. I initially played Ys 8 on Switch and when I tried it on PS4 I had an issue executing those moves at first and it took me a little while to get the new timing down.
      If you ever change your mind and decide to try Ys 9 or Ys 8 again (it's on sale pretty often on the eShop), I'd suggest trying it on the Switch docked with a Switch Pro Controller and see if you like the combat better that way. If you're not enjoying the combat in Ys, you're not going to be enjoying the game. I also prefer the button layout on the Switch Pro controller compared to the PS4 one (I fully admit to customizing the PS4 controls on Ys 9 so they worked similar to the Switch Pro Controller layout).

I wish they could review themselves and look up to incorporate (in the graphics in game too) Some of the Y IV from PC Engine character design!!! That was trully vibrant and funky anime art!!! Now It looks all the same, with their plastic noses and round faces....

    Oh, it's not that you were bad at Ys 8, it was just you were thinking of it as the same as Ys: Memories of celceta. Ys 7-MEmories-8 Are similar but they play different. I personally think it's easier to flash guard on this one rather Memories, which I suck hard. SO, 8 wasn't your cup of tea, that's fine! XD
    I don't care about the concept of the end of the game on the spoiler section, because they made a lore for Ys, and I think it's cool. It also explains how some races are so overpowered on the world of YS xD

    I like the “Y’s” series. “Oath in Felghana” and “Y’s Seven” are two favorite action- RPG’s. And like Lady Pelvic, I was (and still am) bored to tears with the beginning of “Y’s 8: Lacrimosa of Dana”. Combat is great, but the camera sucks like Lady Pelvic says.
