PATCH UPDATE: It seems the water bug along with another bug with backgrounds during certain character events have now been fixed so thats super cool and means that PS5 version is pretty much just a cleaned up version of the PS4 original which is very cool
Turns out the black line on Adol's face is actually caused by the HD texture pack on PC and not the ambient oclusion as turning that off only reduces how noticable it is
Whats odd is the PS5 version does not have that HD texture pack but the black line remains I'll update this pinned comment if I get more info
Cold Steel had higher res face or at least eye textures on PS4 (I think) and then Pc with the mod. Maybe they used the textures for the faces only from the HQ texture pack.
Probably not since that would make no sense.
I found this on a review on steam of the HQ texture pack. I do not know if it works or if it causes other issues This is a straight copy and paste of what they said
IF it works it would obivously only work on the PC verison but that is something
It makes the textures a bit better overall, but meh, it isn't a significative change.
Oh, and another problem, it puts up a line on Adol and Laxia's faces, to fix this, you gotta enter to your game main folder, then to texpack and delete "p0000" and "p0020", if you'd like, you can do a backup of them before. This will fix the problem ONLY FOR Adol and Laxia's main costumes, not for the DLC's ones, what a shame.
P.S: deleting those 2 textures won't screw up the entire texture pack, so yeah, it's 100% safe to do that.
Its not that odd, it just means that the hd texture pack was not something added in, it was hard coded.

but not for the enviroment

If you've only played it on vita before a definately rec the ps4 or one of the versions based off it if you ever want to do a replay, the extra content is quite nice

Shadows actually diffuse the further the subject is from the projected shadows, so while sharp shadows might appear better or cleaner, it's actually further from realism as diffused shadows.
thats specifically for stuff like a PCSS shadow filter which are very expensive and not use in the PS4 or PS5 ports of the game and while it is used in the cold steel games on PC I'm 90% sure that Ys8's highest setting is not using it
I MUST give props to the vita version. For it to be as good as it was, all those years ago... is astonishing. It still holds up in its original form but im glad to play it at 4k

ps5 can do 120fps if your TV can do it

Finally decided to go with this in the backlog. So far really enjoying it. Only just finished chapter 2 though.
eyyyy nice, keep it up the slowest part of the game is probably late chapter 2 early chapter 3, once you get over that mountain however the narrative really gets the ball rolling

Oh man I can't recommend this game enough to people. Just platinumed it on PS5. This makes me want to go back and play Montrum Nox again. What a great series. Can't wait to see more info on X.
Monstrous nox is a way better game by far. It's the best in the series
Alot of people complaining about this not being a free upgrade, but falcom is still a pretty small and niche studio and I'd rather pay for a new copy of this then gta v ported for the 6th time.
If anyone in NA does decide to scoop up the ps4 version, get the PAL release. It's significantly cheaper than the NA version
oh really? make sense most places in the UK are selling it for £20-30 but the Nisa EU store is selling it for £15
NIS had a nice big discount on YS VIII and IX the other day. Great games and nice physical deluxe versions are great to have. Well pleased with them.
One step forward, two steps back, one to the side, and a stumble down a flight of stairs. It never ceases to amuse me how companies can't get on the same page with themselves with these releases. I also think it sucks that the majority of games we get these days are re-releases, remakes, or reboots. Gone are the days of Rockstar in the 2000s.
This was a very interesting topic. Ports are so hit and miss these days, and there are lots of problems bringing Vita games to other platforms. My favorite was the port of Lost Dimension on Steam. It has full controller support, looks good, plays great, and goes on sale all the time. However, they also copied all of the bugs, the biggest one being with the music just stops during gameplay. Still highly recommended. It's a budget title that makes up for it with some impressive mechanics.
This was well done. Keep up the good work, and play a REAL Shin Megami Tensei game one of these days!
the infinite problem is 9 times out of 10 each substantial port will have less money put into it that the last unless is something special like DMC3 on the switch adding the freestyle mode that backported mechanics from DMC4 into 3 as well as a co op mode for bloody palace
Ys8 is weird since it can only benefit so much from more powerful hardware since the PS4 pro was already capping out what the already impressive vita version wanted to do
As for the next SMT video, probably raidou 2 in febuary or march? I did alot of SMT stuff back to back and was getting a tad burnt out on it
@@Kraftium I totally get it. After beating Digital Devil Saga, I was kind of at a crossroads with what to do next. I could replay DDS1 and max out my characters, I could start on DDS2, or I could start on the Raidou games. I decided instead to start going to the gym more often and getting serious about being in shape. No regrets. I can always play them later.
I really wish more companies were making ports out of love of the content more than just out of pure profit. Nightdive did an incredible remaster of Shadowman, fixing a ton of bugs and adding in all the cut content, then put it out on just about everything. It wasn't a particularly popular game in its time, and they really did a ton of work on it, so I hope they made money, but I would imagine the profits weren't great. To be fair, they probably didn't have to pay much for the rights.
Nightdive is currently working on remakes of System Shock 1&2, and I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of people who buy it, but very few who actually play it. They like the idea of a remake more than they remember that it plays like a graphing calculator. I'll get it, of course, but I'm kind of a nut. 🤪
@@100Servings I really don't mind either way what the company is porting a thing for as long as it keeps the thing alive,tho there are times its annoying like vanilla RE4 really didn't need that ps4 xbone port but they exist I guess? and the new "remaster" of symphonia is £30 more than the old remaster that includes symphonia 2 and tales of graces F in there aswell (it has a slight res boost from 720p to 1080p and a really bad AI texture upscale) the best way to play symphonia is still emulating a gamecube iso
stuff like SMT3HD on the other hand while not the best I appricate it for getting SMT3 off the ps2
@@Kraftium Don't get me started on the SMT3HD port. It was a cash grab because the Nintendo money had run out and they still were nowhere near done on SMT V. It ran worse than the PS2 version!!! It had slowdown and frame rate drops where there were none in the original. They kept the compressed audio and it sounded BAD. Yes, they put in a lighting system, but it's only there for half the game! And then they sold us Dante as DLC?!?!? Atlus should apologize for that whole debacle. It honestly makes me worry about the Persona 3&4 ports. But, again, I'm a chump, and will buy them both. Curse this fanboy-ism!!!
Odd. Everything I have heard and see has pointed to the HQ pack to causing the line on the face.
I justed tested out and yeah it seems to be the case atleast on PC (dropping the AO does hide it a bit tho)
Which is weird since the texture pack is definately not present on PS5 but the black line remains

Question for you.If I play the PS4 version on a PS5 will it display in 4K?I have a 4K capable TV? Or is the PS5 version the only one that is displays 4K? Sorry,I'm not a tech guy.Thanks for the info on the game.

So the ps5 will run the ps4 version which runs at 1800p 60fps (1800p is just short of 4K which is 2160p)
The difference between 1800p and 4k is one thats pretty hard to notice due to the higher the resolution the less noticable any further improvements are so both versions are fine

This game is free with ps plus for a while now, glad to see the ps4 version way to go
PS5 version is basically fixed now but you still can't go wrong with the PS4 version, its the one I fell in love with way back when. Tho warning if your starting with ys8 is chapter 2 and early chapter 3 is a little slow but once you get over the mountain (both figaratively and literally) and see whats on the other side the game really hits its stride
hmm weird i dont see the weird black line on the chara's face during my playthrough of ys8 on the ps5. i only encounter that problem with the HQ texture pack on the PC version
It is fairly less noticeble but it is still there on ps5 and yeah I only recently discovered removing the texture pack on PC seems to fix it
even if turning off the ambient occlusion also got rid of it for me
FIRST!!!!!! Jokes aside... Glad the port is good. Not gonna buy because I already have 3 copies, but glad for new fans
The loss of the water refraction is too distracting for me. It felt like the game lost part of its identity. The flat Vita water texture just doesnt have nearly the same power.
Yeah its a very minor thing but really has a big impact on the games look especially with its setting
theres quite a few areas with 1 inch deep water that look really great with the effect and its just gone sadly
Yeah this could have just been an update to ps4 version, kind how ys 9 has a 4K 60 fps patch for game on ps5, and that one is also getting a ps5 version which makes even less sense. The lack of free upgrade makes these ports dumb
I mean based off falcoms spaghetti code/they wouldn't oh had the PS5 in mind I doubt that the ps4 version is built with scalability in mind, so I patch was very likely impossibly/not worth it.
Also Native PS5 ports do tap into more of the console's power than PS4 games with PS5 patches do (see ghost of tsushima and jedi fallen order for examples) so if they want to juice "dem graphics" then a native app is better
They COULD of had a free upgrade path but this port kinda feels like they just want an excuse to market it to people who missed it on PS4 and doing that would mean people wouldn't likely grab a physical ps5 disc and more likely to grab a ps4 copy that NISA can make 0 money off of since those copies are already out in the wild
As for Ys9 while theres no resolution/fps upgrades outside of maybe a 120fps mode, theres alot they could do to increase the "quality per pixel" with level of detail and pop in in Ys9's areas.
Since there are alot bigger its super easy to glide around baldux and see building go from perfect cubes, to low poly to high poly versions of themselves as you get closer, and stuff
Thanks for the analysis. I was ready to go trade in my PS4 version of the game to GameStop & upgrade to the PS5 version. Since Ys VIII is already on PS+ Extra, that'll be the easier way for people to play this game without having to break the bank.

I sadly did trade in my PS4 copy before this release but luckily I traded it in for more than what I rebought it for from the NISA EU store so that was lucky

I love the PC version and don't see much reason to get the PS5 version, but I really wish they made all the DLC available to claim for the PC version that is in the PS5 version even if it only had a 24 hour window since that is the only reason I am contemplating getting the PS5 version. Wish the lines in the face got fixed, it always bugged me with the PC version.
Yeah if you've got the PC version theres definately not much reason to grab the ps5 port if you have a strong enough machine except the DLC costumes (I know there was a way to access them when it first released cos they were still in the files but the durante fix made that method stop working due to a full rework of how the game ran and no one has bothered to find a new method)
not sure if you saw the pinned posted but I taught that the line on adols face goes away if you uninstall the texture pack
There is a workaround to get the costumes working again even after the latest patch, but that still leaves out the 3 DLC that were previously JP exclusive.

the price of physical version of the switch and PS4 is ridiculously high in my country. I dont know why, is it limited releases?

while I have some gripes with the ps5 version they're are pretty minor and the game its a port of is still excellent
That's actually very common for a majority of Falcom games. Good luck finding a physical copy of any of the Ys or Trails games at a reasonable price if you didn't buy it at launch at least the US/North American version. Pick up the PS5 version since it's only like $40 for the base game. I preordered Ys8 PS5 LE which was like $100 or so USD. Same goes for Ys9 PS5 LE as I'll gladly replay these again for PS5 and continue to support Falcom/NIS.
I just beat it again on PS5 and it was a wonderful experience. I def had a few MORE bugs than back when I played it on PS4, at least from what I remembered.
Especially after game completion. The audio is all sorts of fucked. But it's still a wonderful game that any JRPG fan must play.
I really want to play this legendary game again, should I go for the ps4 version on ps5 or the ps5 version in april 2023 ?
Honestly I think you're fine with just the PS4 version on PS5, do a NG+ run with the level scaling modifiers turned on

tho there is also ys8 mobile thats been in development by a chinese studio for roughtly 4 years now? that does seem to be designed with better hardware than the vita had
its combat looks less interesting and its confirmed to be gatcha trash but it is a neat "what if" to look at

Its definitely possible as it will simply become an open world game. That is if they actually put some effort into creating a better Ys 8. It could take at least a year to fully realise that. They should make some chunk loading controls and some other things that open world games have... so yeah it's like building a new game from the ground up but it wouldn't take as long as making a new game because everything else is already there
So if i have a Ps4 physical copy of the game can i upgrade it for free to the Ps5 version ?

unlike trails into reverie this is being treated as its own release so does not have a ps5 upgrade for the ps4 version
that being said even with the patch that fixes the water with the black lines on characters faces and some glitches I've seen in some other ps5 ports of falcom games recently I think the minor resolution bump isn't nessarily all that worth it and your PS4 copy is likely still the way to go

it does on PC
although is kinda jank since the lead of the PC porting team made it as a goof but it worked good enough they actually included it via a patch, although the feature is in "beta" and will be forever

to even play it on PC the game needs to be booted via a seprerate exe file
to get it on PS5 they'd need to essentially upload a second version of the game to the PSN store
not to mention with its jank implimentation it would likely have to go for a bunch of bug testing
the game's code was not built with any intention of co op (also many sections only have 1 playable character) and its a feature that was essentially duct taped on as a fun little bonus for PC
But, I will give you this.... the games good.
I stumbled upon this video watching a lets play if ys 8 and i own it for ps4. Just crazy how this exists on ps5 in a sense they want ppl to pay 50 - 60 bucks or this game and its the same as the ps4 version.

Such a scam! I still own my ps4 so i can still play these great games but i cant be the only person tired of these cash grabs!
Love this game, just sucks all ps5 had been is rerelease games most ps4 players played or owned and charge full price with nothing new to offer!
I mean the PS4 version still works on PS5 and while I haven't personally tested it the PS5's probably smooths out the very specfic instances like night raids where the frame rate takes a hit in the PS4 version of the app via how the back compat exists
Its more just NISA making an excuse to re adertise the game
and besides the one glitch with the face textures it is a pretty nice package with the game with a few additional enhancements from the PC version
Is it worth full price? hell no but people voted with their wallets and the PS5 version is already droped tp £30 (I saw it for even lower in a sale somewhere)
Its still not really worth a rebuy but the point of the release was to try and reach out to new players so I don't think its really meant to (I will say I appricate the fact that this release means theres just MORE physical copies in circulation of a game with a comparatively limited physical release. Not to mention the PS5 version doesn't have the borked translation on the disc)
Honestly ys9 is the one thats more disapointing, the PS5 patch for the PS4 version of the game already takes the game to a 4K and a mostly stable 60fps so the PS5 version just exists with 1 maybe 2 visual enhancemence that are so minor that you'd only notice when taking a microscope to things

The problem is i hate subscription services in general, they make me feel physically ill, if i actually payed for netflix and disney+ instead of mooching them off my brother i'd feel like every second of my free time not using them was a waste of money and the 3 months i had PC gamepass were hell
I realise i have a freakish mind thats very much in the minority but honestly i prefer just buying games and i prefer knowing im supporting the niche tastes i like directly opposed to just putting money in the general gaming ecosystem, tis why i get my physical copies from the NISA eu online store and also why i own like 4 copies of indie game freedom planet on different platforms
Sorry, gotta say this... This is the most useless port for the PS5 and just an excuse for Falcom/NISA to sell another batch of limited editions.
It offers improvements and it makes an all time classic ARPG available to even more people, so far from pointless..

I think expense wise it’s more available. The ps4 and switch versions were really expensive near me. I can finally pick up a physical copy now that it’s out on ps5
