  • After months of working on it, my review of the PC port of Ys: Memories of Celceta is finally here! This is probably the most critical I've been on a game for my channel so far, so I think it made for an interesting video! I had fun making it, so I hope you have fun watching it!

    The biggest problem with combat in this game, aswell as Ys Seven is how the dominant strategy becomes spamming charge attacks and then skills. Normal attacks are kinda worthless which makes combat start to become a bit tedious.

    • @badboy250984
      @badboy250984 Před 4 lety

      Pretty much the same in YS8, normal attack is pretty much build sp and just spam skills ..... this especially noticeable in YS8 is when Adol get certain items and it just become skill spamming machine.

  • @ony806
    @ony806 Před 5 lety +9

    To be honest in Ys I mainly love the lore, so I wasn't disappointed with the story at all. Or at least with all the hints and implications, combined with the Ernst "foreshadowing" it made me enjoy it all the way through, I'm biased about that though, since Ernst is my favorite antagonist in Ys. My biggest issue was that the antagonists, except for Gruda, lacked any proper... "oomph", as both their designs and fights were somewhat generic. I loved the final fight with Gruda though, even if it was short.

    • @culIen
      @culIen  Před 5 lety +1

      The connections to Ys VI are what interested me most about this game as well, I just really wish the ending didn't feel so rushed. Lore wise this game was great, but Celceta itself is just not that interesting I guess?

    • @ony806
      @ony806 Před 5 lety

      Yeah, I'd sum it up by saying that Celceta itself wasn't nearly as interesting as the lore implications it had.

  • @TheJorus
    @TheJorus Před 5 lety +36

    I think Celceta gets too much shit generally but I think most of the criticism here is fair.
    Also FYI Falcom's sound team did the music for Mask of the Sun and Dawn of Ys, everything brought back from there has only been rearranged for Celceta. I personally appreciate most of what those OSTs have to offer, and Celceta's original tracks are also really good.
    Falcom seemed to have some technical issues with the Vita back when developing this game so it would explain why the story doesn't have time to finish all it's plot threads and has a very rushed end.

  • @SlyGamer64
    @SlyGamer64 Před 5 lety +10

    Yeah Xseed sometimes double and triple cast the same VAs. In Cold Steel, Matt Mercer voices Olivert, Cedric, and George, and Max Mittelman voices a couple of characters too. I'm guessing they do that to save on costs, but it breaks my immersion a bit when the actor is essentially talking to his or herself lol

    • @culIen
      @culIen  Před 5 lety +2

      Yeahhhh, I don't remember a character speaking to themself in CS1 last time I checked, but it happens quite often in Celceta

    • @SlyGamer64
      @SlyGamer64 Před 5 lety +3

      Olivert and Cedric had one or two conversations with each other, but I don't think it wasn't too noticeable since Matt Mercer did a good enough job differentiating the two voices.

    Funny thing how I came to discover Ys. I had recently become interested in getting a PSVita (this was back in 2016 maybe?) and brought it up to my wife, who needed ideas for my upcoming birthday. Without even having a Vita yet, I saw a deal on Amazon for Memories of Celceta for freaken $9 or something ridiculous, and for whatever reason, I just impulse bought it, figuring why not give it a shot?
    It ended up being my favorite game on the Vita right up until I played Ys VIII in 2018! I'd never played an action RPG so action-packed before. And the music was insane! But before Ys VIII I went and bought every other Ys game I could find. To this day, the only more recent title I haven't played is Ys Seven, which I have for my PSP but have yet to get around to playing. Part of me is hoping it gets ported to the Switch one day though I'm sure that'll never happen.
    I'd say my favorite is no doubt Ys VIII but Oath in Felghana is probably my second. Third would be Origin, then Memories. Such a great franchise that is finally getting some attention it deserves in the west!

      @My 2bar You haven't really played enough to really judge it. It's very obvious the game has a lot more dedication and love put into than something rushed like Celceta, which Falcom admitted to doing.

    • @corpuscallosum5862
      @corpuscallosum5862 Před 5 lety +1

      @My 2bar 5 hours? This is nothing. I needed to play it 10 hours to really warm up to the game. The first 10 hours weren't bad, but it was more like I was kind of indifferent to the game. As I played more, the environment started to change and I saw more and more of the awesome surroundings, then I mastered my first skill and I started to really/deliberately use the other skills.
      I saw a lot of different landscapes and nice vistas, then the story picked up. Ys 8 is really a masterpiece :D It just really needs time to adjust to the game.
      10 hours sounds much, but Ys 8 is a really long game, so you should look at it in relation to the total time of the game.

    Well, if anything, watching this review months before I played Memories of Celceta probably made me like the game a lot more, as I really didn't have any problems with the final dungeon or ending. My only major complaint was with the absence of full quick travel in the first half of the game, although even that didn't bother me too much since the game usually only requires the player to move forward.

I don't want my videos to influence people by any means but I do want them to inform people on what I do and don't like about the games I play in order for them to know what they get into before buying a game. @@culIen It didn't really influence my opinion, but it lowered my expectations a bit. I think that the underwater combat in Celceta is way better than that of 8 (Laxia, learn how to swim), and found that the crafting was best used to add status effects to my attacks so that mobs of enemies were getting frozen or poisoned after a few strikes.

    As someone who played this game in between Felghana and Napishtim, when I was playing through this series, and only got to experience the other games with the party system later, I really loved this one, but I totally get it. I think playing this before you play Seven, VIII, and IX is pretty key to why I loved it as much as I did. Everything from the characters to the premise and its story beats hit for me. I also played through Dawn of Ys before I played through this one and getting to really see a lot of their ideas there a lot more realized helped my enjoyment. I think the story was better in Seven, but the characters were a lot stronger in Celceta.
    You nailed my favorite and my least favorite parts of the game, though. I loved the memories with young Adol, and the ending was the one part for me where everything just felt like it ended too soon, only because the string of fights for the final fight felt so damn easy. If they just stuck the landing, I could at least say I liked it more than Seven.

    Ys 8 didn't really "go crazy" with the crafting systems, so much as "heavily restrict" them.
    Don't get me wrong, I still really enjoyed it, but all you can do is build new gear and boost weapons/armor by predetermined increments, while Memories of Celceta was pretty much a full blown MMORPG with crafting, where you can make it so that your beginning short sword can have a significant boost to its attack/critical chances and also absorb Hp, improve SP Regen, and have massive chances to freeze/paralyze/slow/poison/burn, and do something similar with all your armor (with status resistances rather than status attacks), if you really want to invest in it (with the added benefit of possibly not needing use an Accessory slot if you have to deal with lots of status effects attacks in a region. Plus you can also boost your Adventurer Gear.
    Also, I would argue that heavily restricting Fast Travel until you beat the first half of the game is to make it more immersive, since your supposed to be exploring a very inhospitable region and being able to hop back to home base at any point would really undercut that sensation until you have earned it.

    • @culIen
      @culIen  Před 4 lety

      Unfortunately like I said in the video, crafting is completely pointless in this game and you don't even need to use it. They did go crazy with it in 8, because they took a useless and underutilized feature and gave it a point. Sometimes focusing on and fleshing out a few parts of a system that worked well instead of bloating it with parts that don't is better. In my experience crafting in celceta only helps on higher difficulty, and the game's story was so mediocre that I never want to replay it on one of those. If a feature is only really useful on a higher difficulty, that's poor balancing. Ys VIII uses this mechanic to offer meaningful progress, which is "going crazy" in my book.

    Yea, the TurboGrafix version of Ys 4 (Dawn of Ys) was MUCH better in the plot department than Memories of Celceta. I'd really recommend you find a copy of the fan-dub translation (not just the regular translation, cutscene dialog is all spoken, without text, and the fandub did a phenomenal job dubbing it).
    ...Though I actually would recommend you download a copy of the ISO with the dub patch already applied, even if you already own the disc, because it's an error-prone mess applying the thing, requiring a _perfect_ ISO that even the custom ripping software they developed specifically for the mod can only manage one in three times, assuming there's no scratches, dust, or other damage on the disc... (the modding process involves ripping the disc, using a tool they developed to extract the ADPCM audio directly from the ISO, replacing the files with to-the-byte-perfectly sized translated files, then injecting those new ones back into the ISO with another custom tool; there are 3 points in this process with a pretty random but frequent failure rate... though it's flawless when done properly... though the audio can be very loud if played in an emulator, there's a volume adjusted version for emulators out there if you look hard enough... I'd give you a link but publicly posting something like that would be a good way to get my mega account terminated, lol)

    It is not by far a weakest game in the series. Gameplay is fantastic, music is awesome... Story is so-so.

    • @culIen
      @culIen  Před 3 lety

      What would you consider the weakest? Imo the gameplay was fine, the music was solid, and the story was bad.

    • @Elrinth
      @Elrinth Před 3 lety

      I'd think 5 probably as it lacks the standard Ys music and visually it's very stiff.
      Maybe 1&2 aswell as you only run into enemies. I don't find that satisfying gameplay. But I didn't play them enough nor did I try out all versions of them.
      7 I haven't played so I can't say anything about that.

    I don't understand why people hate Ys Celceta. I love the mysterious ambiance of this Ys game and the land of Celceta/world map is really intriguing. For me the Altago (Ys Seven) world building/world map is so boring if we compare with Celceta. But I have to admit that I hate the final dungeon when you have to turn a golden ring and then create a path lol.

      It was mostly fine but the ending segment is one of the worst segments falcom has ever made. I feel I did a good job backing up why I just didn't like it in my video, but if you disagree thats totally fine!

      @Terranigma23 Před 4 lety

      @@culIen nope I agree with you for the story (particurlary near the end), but I really love the ambiance (don't know why). Sure it's not a masterpiece like Ys VIII, but a fun game in general. By the way did you see the recent Falcom interview on Gematsu ? Kondo confirm that they are working on a west release date for Ys IX. 😁

    I honestly think the best comparison for this video is ys 3, oath in felghana, as the games share a lot of similarities. Ys 3 handles its plot delivery much much better, but its gameplay is a bit rough, as it wasnt as perfected as it could be, as we see in ys origin. Its a similar story here, where the systems are much more improved in ys 8 than here, but the gameplay is just way too much fun. Also i do share your reservations about the ending as well, tho my problem is how unresolved it feels. The game literally does just. end.

    • @culIen
      @culIen  Před 5 lety +2

      I feel like Felghana's gameplay feels a bit more balanced, probably because it was more constrained. Origins is definitely the VIII to Felghana's Celceta, but Felghana was a much better game than Celceta imo.
      Really upset with the ending, I think I have the VOD on my twitch still of me reacting to the ending live. What a mess.

    • @eagix
      @eagix Před 4 lety

      @@culIen It's very different, plot and otherwise; personally Dawn of Ys and Book 1 and 2 are two of my favorites in the series (Origin is probably my favorite, though). I'm in my 40s, so I grew up when 16bit CD games were mind blowing. Though I've played through both as an adult I think they hold up despite the limitations of game design and hardware at the time :). Definitely worth trying! (The ending for Dawn is very charming if not totally cannon). Anyway, loved your review, totally get the Adol thing :D.

    I'm 20 hours in Ys 8, and can't find a single thing done better than Celceta, how is it possible people like that game more than this one?! I don't agree with most of the criticism in this video lol

    • @culIen
      @culIen  Před 3 lety

      Well, everyone is certainly allowed to value different things in games. People who have played both to completion that tend to prefer VIII do so because the gameplay, story, and exploration feel more fleshed out. It builds off of Celceta's fundamentals, and unlike Celceta they didn't run out of money at the end which left it unfinished. Most of the people who do not like celceta don't like it for that exact reason. I would just recommend going into VIII with an open mind, not trying to see how it is better or worse than Celceta. That way if you still don't like it, you can at least say you looked at it on its own merits. Have a good day!

  • @arczeum7921
    @arczeum7921 Před 5 lety +1

    No doubt the game was rushed since they most likely wanted to spend more of their resources on Cold Steel, which would come out 1 year later after Celceta.

    For me, the best version of Ys IV will always be Dawn of Ys. Great soundtrack (MoC's arranged soundtrack is pretty dogshit compared to Dawn's), epic cutscenes, nice graphics, grandiose setpieces, solid and to-the-point story/characters, fun dungeons, cool and challenging bosses... and the very best the classic bump-system combat has ever been. No fat or waste, just pure bulging muscles and unadultered old-school JRPG goodness.
