11 matches into the 21/22 season, Newcastle had a grand total of 5 points.
This placed them 19th in the Premier League and they seemed to be diving headfirst into relegation.
Yet they ended the season comfortably mid-table, placing 11th with a respectable 49 points.
How did Eddie Howe manage this feat?
JJ Bull explains.

Howe's work with turning Joelinton from a below average attacker to a good to very good CM was a stroke of genius.
My question is if liverpool or city had tried to grab him, would we be talking about him as one of the best pressing forwards in the world? Also bayern at this point, he cant cost much more than mane' and would he be more useful as a firminho 2.0 in a nagelsmen team? Everyone always forgets how much work off the ball is required for that team to function at the top level. And what does this say about the multitude of complete players you can pull from the Brasileirão that we dont see moving to europe recently?
Tbh, Howe didn’t turn Joelinton into that, he was always that player.
That’s what he was doing in Germany at Hoffenheim, Bruce was just a mince.
It was bloody obvious - Bruce was a fool for not doing it
@@giovanniebrady966 Based on Transfermarkt data, Joelinton has played 21 times as a midfielder (not counting positions: LW, SS, RW, or CF). 19 times at Newcastle during Howe's era (2021-2022), 1 time at Palmeiras (2014), and 1 time in Austria (2017). At Hoffenheim, he played 29 times as a central forward, 3 times as a right winger, 3 times as a second striker, and once as a left winger. He might have had a pressing forward role or a deep lying forward role, and capability to do what he does now, but clearly, there has been a clear decision and an agreement between Howe and the player because now he is officially playing as a midfielder.
@@chradikaali yeah, I mean he always bad the ability to win a ball back wherever he was on a pitch but it's like Newcastle paid the fee and saw 'striker' next to his name and then got really pissed when he wasnt scoring goals when they had him playing as a advanced forward.
It's like buying a dog and then wonder why he wont take a dump all this kitty litter you picked up for it to use.
“Chris Wood is also there” sounds about right 😅
He's just there lol

Howe has shown just how good a manager he is, I can't think of many managers who could have turned Newcatle around in the way he has, and he's done so with what we knew at Bournemouth, a very astute manager. Newcastle will be top half next season, may even be top six.

Not a Newcastle fan but that is possibly the best football shirt ever, absolutely iconic!
Really? I always thought it looked like an old timey prisoner’s uniform.
My teenage years were in the 90s, Shearer was playing, Newcastle were challenging in the league, throw in that home shirt (and even the away one was pretty good too)
Maybe it’s just nostalgia, but it’s a damn good top!
The star in the middle is hideous imo lol

You just have to love it. As long as it's in these non-distracting little chuckles on the side, I really don't mind them bringing some of that Tifo Football Show madness into the regular content.
Howe is literally the anti-Bruce
Newcastle at home were a different beast under Howe, the best turn around this season
One of the top things Howe has done is massively improved the fitness and amount of training the player were doing, Bruce had these players that clearly are hard grafters but had them training 2-3 times a week
Yep, too keen to get back home to Cheshire most days. That kind of attitude is instilled in the players.
Great overview. Joelinton was a VERY happy accident after dropping back into midfield when reduced to 10 men against Norwich. Eddie deserves credit for seeing that potential and retraining Joe in that psoition.
Dan Burn is so underrated
But, but.....the arm chair pundits said it was all down to the £90m.
Thanks for that. Great video.
@@barrychopsticks Tell that to the 500mil Everton have spent over the last 5 years.
@@barrychopsticks Thats just catch up money, to the other teams, all the other teams maxed out their ffp allowance already
@@barrychopsticks both are correct. His tactics and coaching are definitely a big factor though because when those signings haven't played, the players who were previously performing badly have shown improvement too. I think without the signings they would have still just about avoided the drop.
@@mrmagpiepromotions If the takeover didnt happen then Howe wouldnt have gone there, because Ashley wouldnt have sacked Bruce and also Howe isnt a moron desiring career suicide. So the idea that he would have kept the pre-Jan squad up is irrelevant. The single most important factor is the $$$
@@barrychopsticks Kinda is though, yes the 90mil most certainly helped but there has been a larger degree of investment at most of the lower half of the prem clubs over the last few seasons. We have to remember how under resourced the club was if we want to accurately judge Eddie Howe's performance.
Newcastle fan from Mexico (Fan since the entertainers days, Goal film solidified the Toon in my heart) Great breakdown, Subbed!!
Nothin better than hearin the toon have fans all over the world 💪
Been a Tifo for a long time and now my boys are finally getting some coverage!!!
Tifo have done loads of Newcastle videos this season
@Liam Di Martino
excited huh lad ?
It was such a shame that some people were hating on Howe just bc he couldn’t manage to keep Bournemouth up when they’re so small as a club and his turnaround there was incredible like he was still using players from league one and people just seemed to forget or just never look past the surface level of them getting relegated when Newcastle hired him. He’s a great manager and hope he can keep evolving with the squad and hopefully get to where the new owners want
Part of the story is also that Howe used his time away to improve on the areas where he might be less strong like studying defensive structure and pressing play under Simione at Atletico Madrid as well as improving the psychological management. Learning how to get the best out of each player not just physically but mentally as well because all players are different, and needs to be treated slightly differently. It might be small things like your choice of words or tone of voice. Some players like the tough love, others needs a softer touch to perform at the best of their ability.
Eddie Howe's ghost appearing in the bottom left corner every now and again is oddly terrifying.
It's appears every time the word how is said. Nice little detail.
One might say he changed howe they press
Also, take my like!
Howe has taken over a team that was 19th and looked destined for relegation and honestly the worst teams to one of the form teams in the league. He has revolutionised every aspect of the club, tactics, players, training, everything. Remarkable job, extremely impressive.
Underrated manager. Howe does he do it?
One of the things I was most impressed with, especially towards the end of the season, is Newcastle's shape and fluidity in possession. Really comfortable and always options, reminiscent of those other mega money clubs that top the big leagues.
E I E I E I O,
Up the Premier League we go,
When we get to Europe,
This is what we'll sing,
We are geordies super geordies,
Eddie is our king ❤️
I did not see the Joelinton shirt coming out. Loved the vid
Steve Bruce once screamed at Almiron for trying to press. Everyone can meme that we spent some money but Eddie has completely transformed the team and made Joelinton a brilliant midfielder
Throughout I was waiting for the section on big Joe Linton. Felt like everyone watching was that Simpsons meme "Say the lineee".
Howe has been a breath of fresh air and the new players and rejuvenation of old has been outstanding to watch.
Excellent overview. I've watched every game this season and you could see the improvements within the first couple of weeks of Howe being there. At the end of the year it was like watching a totally different team. It's been the most exciting season as a Toon fan for years and I can't wait to see how he builds the team moving forward. Bruno has been a massive part of the turnaround, as have many others but he stands out for me in being absolutely class in everything he does.
Not only is this testament to howes quality it is also a reflection of how bad bruce is
I think the most impressive thing about the signing is that none of them were real super stars. Bruno Is fantastic but bearly played till mid march and trippier was amazing straight out the gate but got injured and only played something like 6 games.
Target was great and I hope me sign him permanently and big dan burn is a wall but neither are players most teams couldn’t sign. Chris wood was alright too
Well, you got your wish bud. Targett signed permanently. I'd like us to get Paqueta if we can and it looks like we might end up with Botman unless he digs his heels in.
"joelinton was a 10 or a 10 and a half"
- jj bullard
the minor flourish at 3:19 is hilarious and magestic, whoever edited this deserves credit
Nice video, but i have a few issues with the generalisation of eddie’s tactics to be honest. Just a few points that I’d refine:
- Eddie never actually played 4-4-2 with Newcastle, it just took the media a few games to realise that joelinton was playing as a 6 rather than a striker. This is why the lineups say 4-4-2, but in the actual game he was far more of a midfielder, playing more of a 4-5-1 in his first few difficult games. Your explanation actually shows this, he’s pressing behind Wilson, not alongside him.
- Trippier was a good fit purely for his
experience. Yes he scored a few free-kicks making it seem like a tactical masterclass for set-pieces, but it didn’t impact his tactics. He got injured after a few games then krafth came in and was incredible, taking on a similar role as you explained very well. Imo the transformation of joelinton was incredible, but Howe tactically revolutionised krafth’s game and it should be mentioned, since trippier hardly played.
- Bruno was never brought in to sit in the pivot. He played one game there when Shelvey was injured, but Howe took his time with Bruno then slotted him in for Willock. Bruno isn’t a deep playmaker, he’s a high intensity box-to-box that prefers short intricate passes. This is why Shelvey has always taken the pivot role. Even at Lyon he was an attack minded dm, leaving caqueret/mendes to sit deeper.
Top analysis. Love the channel. Keep it up lads!
I like how he’s come in and focused on developing current players, most managers coming into a struggling team with infinite money would completely change the whole squad in January, Howe has made smart signings and is the perfect man to push this Newcastle teams to new heights
Thank you for this! I was hoping you would do it 🙏🏼
Been waiting months for this video thanks guys at tifo!
Great video mate, earned a sub from me! Nice touch cutting back to yourself wearing the Joelinton shirt, didn’t see it coming at all. 😂
Great analysis. The one thing I would add is to also emphasise is how much Guimaraes wins the ball from the opposition in the defensive and middle third. Not only does he win ball back from tackles and interceptions, once he’s won it, he keeps it and either distributes to another teammate or draws a foul.
Not just a creative playmaker as JJ says but also arriving into the attacking box (hence the goals).
All the January signings have improved the side, but for me Guimaraes is different class.
Excited for next season for the first time in nearly two decades!!
The "Howe"s were a nice touch. Keep Tifoing, Tifo.
Brilliant video. Smart, funny, and good analysis. Nicely done!
When you were talking about PPDA it made me think I'd be interested in a video on this and other similar metrics (PP Offensive A for example) because I don't think I fully get what this means. I have a rough idea but wouldn't be able to explain it to someone else!
"Chris Wood is also there...."
Absolutely savage.
Their set pieces number is unfairly skewed as they played Everton twice under Howe so probably scored half of those 13 against us.
Brilliant lmao
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 brilliant

That was good analysis of NUFC. Thank you
Fantastic Analysis 👏🏼 and a great shirt 👕 haha
Nice analysis 👌
Great vid. even better shirt
Decent. Thought you was a bit unfair on Krafth. Although because of injury, he's played more than Trippier under Howe and become known as Krafthu.
Agree completely. Before January I was of the opinion the team was actually stronger with ten men on the field than if Krafth was in the side. The turnaround and transformation of Krafth is only truly overshadowed by Joelintons'.
He's still $hit.
Yeah he really turned it round and ended up being solid. Looked good going forward too at times.
great analysis
Great video although you could do more research into the squad when Howe was appointed. After January Hayden, Clark and Lewis were all left out of the squad
Great video 👍
loved this, you should have went through two or three realistic players that you'd suggest that would compliment the rest of the team.
They'll do sensible transfers soon I'd say
Or you should have gone
Ekitike, Botman and Ox would be rly good and realistic
I have always rated him high, he along with Graham Potter are two top managers from England. I suggested him as a permanent manager after Mourinho left Manchester United especially if we couldn’t get Mauricio Pochettino but got mocked by my fellow Manchester United supporters. I’m curious to see how his team will perform in Europe. I hope he stays at Newcastle United for at least 5 years.
It would be interesting to know the average speed of the players at the end of this season compared to the start. When Newcastle get the ball the pace of the game doubles now.
That Newcastle Brown Ale kit is a classic
Incredible video!
👀
You really have been real busy JJ. Nice video and take care.
This man is seriously good. A good transfer window will help Newcastle to be Top4 contender.
This video is fantastic.
Nice touch with Eddie popping up bottom left every time the word 'how' was mentioned
Love you JJ
Nu& fan here. I would love to hear TIFo thoughts on NUFC back 5 pope trippier botman burn target. Schar also able to slot in if a right footed is preferred to burn or botman. 2 left footers in burn and botman… I can’t think of a perm Xbox pairing of 2 left footers, any issues with that?
Could you do an update on what’s changed in recent weeks ?
I said in your previous videos how you had it spot on you called it. You said in January burn Bruno wood etc would improve us and it did. Chuffed to see Joelinton praise has there ever been a more dramatic turn around. I hope he is soon recognised as a CM not CF on fifa and pro evo etc lol
And suddenly his stats also change, because those games are complete mince.
Does anybody know what app/program they use for this formation viewing stuff?
They didn't have to do that at 3:18, but I'm glad they did
JJ takes his shirt game to the next level

Bruno came in for Willock towards the end of the season. Shelvey playing the 6 until he picked a knock late in the season.
Funny how few videos there are talking about Bruce's technique and tactics, instead he is mentioned on the videos discussing his replacement and how it was improved.
Also note - Rafa had videos made about him.

Where can I get this gorgeous shirt?
Makes me fear Bruce as a west brom fan
It’s not even the fact the football is dire under Bruce, it’s every pundit telling you that he’s doing a good job whilst turning up in cup games and having no shots on target against a team 3 leagues below.

He just put on a shirt of Joelinton! Out of nowhere
Don't show this video to Bruce's mates in the media, their heads would explode.
Howe should be given a big club. He's more than capable.
He has been given a big club. Go to St James' Park for a home game and you'll see for yourself.
We are waiting for sensible transfer for Newcastle
Yet Klopp gets manager of the season for winning two 0-0 cup finals on penalties 🙄
@@Antonio-hb8rd I'm not even a Toon fan but no manager or club has ever survived after going winless in their first 14 games. Howe literally broke the record at a canter and nearly finished top 10 with what many teased would be the richest club in the championship as recently as January. That's damn impressive and better than anything Klopp produced this season. Had LFC won the quadruple, then sure, but he didn't.
By your logic, Gerard Houllier is a better manager than Klopp because he won a treble while Klopp won a double only.
No English manager will ever achieve much in the Prem, always behind the top teams. The top teams will always be managed by Spanish, German or Italian coaches.
@@TheAlphaDingo Yeah but how many clubs that are winless in the relegation zone in December have then gone on and spent 92 million on new players to keep them up?
@@safebans1369
QPR and Fulham? Heck, Villa spent over 100m this season and got worse. But why should it matter about January spending in isolation? January prices are over inflated and you still need to integrate new signings into the team and get them playing well quickly without the benefit of a preseason. If anything, shows how good NUFC were to not be held to ransom, secure their targets and slot them into the team with immediate effect and results.
JJ in that jersey looks like an NBA ref 😂
Transfers matter yes and the closer to the top you get the more this is true, but getting players to play to their potential is also very important, and the importance of this I think is generally under appreciated by the majority of fans and pundits, people have a very fixed mindset about the ability of players that tends not to be refelctive of the reality of modern high quality coaching methods. Hard work from players in training is important but you have to use that hard work in the right way to get good outcomes, and Howe seems to really understand this and beyond that seems capable of communicating it to the players playing under him.
Very well said. When you look at coaches like Brian Clough and Sir Bobby Robson it ultimately came down to how they managed the players personalities to get the best from them.
"We can look at Howe this works." 3:18
Obviously Steve Bruce had no idea of what he had or what to do with it . . Bruce couldn't wait to get away back to Manchester with his mates .well these lads are no fools they could see through him . They could see his tactics were crap and he was dragging the team down ..
How did Howe
