  • Newcastle United 4-1 PSG has sent shockwaves throughout European football. But as well as a brilliant strategy for dealing with Mbappe and co, the secret to Eddie Howe's success was as much about the team's mentality as it was its tactics.

I think Lacelle's performance was a tribute to not only being coached correctly, but his own professionalism and hard work, he looks lean and fit, (2 stone lighter and 5 yards quicker) credit to him and the rest of the team

The best bit is that Enrique described our style of play as "Classic English, long balls"... Not exactly Luis.
You know what, one of the best things to come from Wednesday (apart from other teams now being more worried about St. James') is our biggest problem recently has been not playing our proper game against top teams- City 2nd half in the cup and PSG have shown every player what can happen when you're brave, chuck away that trepidation and fear and go at people! Amazing things can happen.

tbf if hes that unaware of how we were playing even in a game he was present at against a team he was managing, then I suppose he had no chance of getting his tactics right and setting up properly. 4 attackers against newcastle at st james...jesus christ, the naivety and arrogance of that

    • @gonufc
      @gonufc Před 7 měsíci +2

@@unholyxeras8182 It absolutely was arrogance. To think he could stick 2 in midfield (one of which being a 17 year old!) against our midfield which our midfield which is practically designed to win the ball back quickly and effectively.
I think it's a problem that all PSG managers get into at some point: they think that all these superstars will just automatically blow the opposition away. The fact it probably works a lot of the time in Ligue 1 doesn't help.

What Howe has done particularly well is create an identity and style that matches that of the Newcastle fan. Newcastle fans are passionate, loud, intense, and historically have built their lives around working hard during the week, usually for little money, and then watching their team at the weekend. Newcastle play like their fans live. It creates this synergy which makes Newcastle play with more intensity then they could do without their fans, and it galvanises their fans to cheer them on as a result. It’s important as fans that we don’t question too much the willingness of the team otherwise that relationship might break down and everyone suffers.

Tbh I remember being disappointed with EH’s appointment at the time as we were heading for relegation and we needed a top coach to save us. But he instantly grew on me. You could tell he knew exactly what he was doing and knew what we needed from the off. He’s been a class act from the very beginning and I wouldn’t swap him with any manager in the world right now. I really hope he stays for decades here and builds a legacy like Alex Ferguson didn’t Man U. Him and Newcastle are a match made in heaven. This result when we thrashed PSG 4-1 is the best result ever for me. Even better than the 3-2 against Barcelona all those years ago. Against Barcelona I remember the second half we were bricking it as they were close to drawing level, but against PSG we never stopped pressing and were the better team throughout, then to top it off Schar fires a rocket into the top corner in the 90th minute. Magical. I wish I was there!!
Eddie Howe is simply a genius and it’s incredible all that he’s achieved with the club already, and with him and these wonderful owners we have now that really care about Newcastle there’s no stopping us. We’re playing exciting attacking football like The Entertainers days and smashing big teams. We’re in the CL ahead of schedule and we’ve already been to a Cup Final. PSG supposedly play with 4-2-3-1, but Kolo-Muani, Mbappe (behind Ramos), and Dembele are too atacking minded players, they left Ugarte and Zaire-Emmery isolated and the two were always outnumbered and outplayed by Newcastle's center trio

One wise guy said that Midfield is the engine of the football team on the pitch. Put only 2 midfielders (1 of them defensive oriented in Ugarte) really make your team massively inferior to go to battle unless your opponent is way below your level
And Magpies is not that team😂

So, the holy grail of sports science is to get that 5-10% of energy that the body holds back for an emergency - a life / death type thing - and and allow your elite athletes to access it! If you think that not getting back to make that tackle for the club you supported as a boy, that your whole family fanatically follow and that is impregnated into your very being is a life / death thing then you get to that emergency boost. Newcastle, by the way, have more childhood fans in their squad than any other premiership team. Accident ? I think not!

Adam, so you think the Club are going to buy; if an Eddie Rules Guy, with Howe’s team detailed skill/attribute recruitment requirements and making a good player, only being used as and played with a role doing every attribute; become World Class at doing only the attributes they are amazing at! And therefore a new LCB or any CB? 2:39 or does he believe he has all he needs in that defensive unit. And if so, who? Thank you Adam good to see you not wasting your attribute at the old place ;) 2:39

Newcastle fan from USA grew up playing ice hockey on the rinks with US Olympic 1980 miracle on ice team that dismantled the Russia team. I see alot of parallels between that team and Eddie Howe and this Newcastle team. They are young, they are hungry, they are teachable and they play as a team. PSG just like the Russians thought all they had to do was show up to win.

Simpler than that... They are fitter than most. You only have to look at what Howe did to Gordon when he first arrived and what Gordon said and did after!! You make more mistakes when tired/ not fit. You are slower, more lethargic, think slower make bad decisions . Half a yard behind everyone else. Man utd players are not fit. Too busy playing Fifa and staying up all night and have to walk around the pitch to recover. The game has changed and skillful decent players need to be 100% fit to play these systems to perform. You said yourself the Newcastle back line isn't the fastest. But they don't need to be if they are fit as they can mark players put of the game.

Oh wow!! I just thought of something really amazing!
So, local boy Lord Cuthbert Collingwood aboard HMS Royal Sovereign famously smashed into the French battle line first at Trafalgar in October 1805. Collingwood’s ship was the fastest of the fleet and he was an intense and aggressive captain and followed Nelsons last signal of the battle which was not ‘England expects etc but in fact was “Engage the Enemy More Closely”. And nearly 200 years later in October local boys basically do the very same thing to the French again getting similar results!! Wow!

Such a good summary. It isn’t one thing Eddie has done, it’s many and clearly lots on 1:1 and 1:many coaching hours… but the unison of the players and City (not just club but City) is something that I think can’t be understated and you just can’t understand it if you aren’t living or spending time in the City.
