Eddie Howe’s Newcastle surprised everyone by qualifying for the Champions League in England. But the even stranger part is HOW (no pun intended) they did it.
Today I analyse what makes Newcastle unique, and why they’re so incredibly difficult to play against. I hope you enjoy :)

It’s S. Longstaff not M. Longstaff, please in your heart find a way to forgive me.
You are forgiven my child
Poor Matty didn't deliver on the early momentum
Sorry I'm reporting you. This is unforgiveable
No I'm reporting you to the police.
How dare You!!!. You should be ashamed of yourself my dear😭😭
He turned positional play upside down and still works like normal.. 😂😂. Eddy Howe is a genius. Truely
Howe did he do it?
@@atharv7353 Wow!
As a Newcastle fan I’ve seen a lot of attempts from CZcamsrs trying to interpret Howes play style in videos like this, but IMO you’ve portrayed it the best. The positive mentality Howe has gave us is incredibly appreciated by us fans, we haven’t seen this type of positivity in over 15 years.
One of my fears however is the triangular passing we seem to execute on the wings, with the reverse balls etc, it seems a bit too predictable and when we play the stronger teams in the league they always seem to shut it down quite well. It’ll be interesting to see Howe combat this in the future. Great video anyways.
Another magpie fan here and have been for 20+ years, it's unbelievable to see how well we have been playing this season compared to the usual utter shit we have been used to. I remember whenever we used to face man u, it would be a definite 4/6- 0 lose and now we actually have a team. I can not wait to see what howe does to bulster and improve the team plus how we do in Europe.
I've noticed this "flaw" where I'd say the stronger sides have "shut us down" we just don't seem to have a back up plan. This certainly happened in the home leg of the Carabao semi when we went off the boil and Bruno was sent off. When we go behind, we don't regroup and come back with a fresh strategy
@@andrewphippsphillips1455somewhat I think down to lack of attacking options. Towards end of season when we had a fresh group to pick from he was able to change it up, see Brentford away for eg. Mostly injuries have dictated team selection especially with only 4 senior midfielders one of whom also plays LW and 2 strikers.
This is very similar to the movement and patterns of Sheffield United players under Chris Wilder.
@@christophercrowle9753i never thought we will play a passing game like this. Could never imagine. Always envying the likes of Man Utd and Arsenal for their passing ability. Not anymore.
Great video mate, I'm a season ticket holder. The game against Brighton where we won 4-1 was such a battle of concepts, the Howe press designed to prevent playing it from the back vs De Zerbi's anti-press build up was one of the best games I've seen in a while from a tactical perspective.
😊😊😊aqmqn
Can completely agree.
The fact city beat brignton 4-1 and arsenal couldn’t
Most of the discussion around Newcastle this season has been regarding their defence record, set pieces etc. So I thought I’d give a different perspective on why they’re also a force going forward!
W
Top stuff my g
Thank you so much for this! We've scored so many goals, that it's good to see it recognized
People think they just park the bus lol, the Emirates game ruined their rep
yo is this similar to diniz but way more direct
If you’ve seen his coaching at Bournemouth (pre-season mic’d up) he’s always been preaching this dynamic, direct, interchange-style with all kinds of unpredictable overlaps/underlaps. Great to watch and very effective 👍
So basically, Newcastle gave him the key to his dreams and it's working 🤔
The day Bournemouth won with 3-0 vs Man Utd
I enjoyed seeing this fresh take on Newcastle which focused on other parts of their game and not just their press.
Aye! Aggressive press only worked up to a point (when we got found out). We (Newcastle) adapted amazingly to several different ways of playing over the course of the season.
Excellent analysis. I couldn't work out why they were so horrible to get a result against. Now I know.
Excellent summary! It's got to be so difficult to analyse, become aware of, then present this material. Great job.
love your videos they make me understand football a lot easier and simpler
Newcastle is playing dream Red Bull football right now, it is fun to watch them!
Subscribed a couple of days ago after your brilliant Fluminense video, and as a Newcastle fan this was a real treat! Very professional insight and analysis, this is a gem of a channel. Keep it up!
Howe's style makes me remember the Dinizismo, non-positional playstyle of previous video. Wingers with a lot of freedom to cross the pitch
Having watched every game last season, they are so fun to watch. Eddie is a genius.
Eddie is a genius lalalalala
Great video. This is why some new signings will struggle to adapt quickly unless they get a full pre-season. Anthony Gordon signed mid season and not only was his fitness nowhere near to the rest of the squad but he has to learn about Howe's system. Once he does, Gordon will become a star player for us
correct
Great coach, we're really chuffed with him. What he's done with this squad is immense.
Great content, mate! Newcastle is truly a gem. And your channel is full of quality videos!
Matty Longstaff playing number 8 all season with a cruciate injury. Better player than I thought
all whilst on loan !
Crazy that we've released him considering how well he works in this system!
I forget what match it was, but I distinctly remember seeing Dan Burn (LB) making multiple touches near the top right corner flag. The ball came back to his position and I think it was Murphy taking up his defensive duty.
The annihilation of spuds, in that first 20mins he was up the right wing as much as he was left back. In fact he spent more time beside spuds left corner flag then his own and he’s our left back.
Brilliant to watch as everyone just shuffled around to cover. 🤣😂
Brilliant analysis. Excellent insight for coaching. Thank you!
Forest fan here, must say a fantastic breakdown and delivery dude, nearly as good as NU breakdown and delivery this season…..NU and Brighton were the most entertaining teams to watch this season, I know we have a really talented coach in Cooper too and with a more stable and consistent pre-season we will see more entertaining football next season.
Good video. I continued watching even after the M Longstaff bloopers. Glad I did.
When you watch them you can see that as soon as they get their heads up on the ball they are looking to pass straight up the pitch as first option every time.
You have earned another sub. i could not help it you just drew me in. Your unbiased analysis is refreshing, you load it neither for or against the team you are presenting which in turn allows the unbiased viewer to see just what you are getting at and appreciate the analysis.
Thank you, and keep it up. 👍👍👍
Manager of the Season for most people, hands down.
They are amazing to watch. The video of the 23rd April 2023 6 -1 Spurs slaughter, will be shown at training grounds around the world for many years to come. Everything mentioned above is there to be seen at its absolute best. A twenty one minute masterclass of NUFC magic.
This is the best breakdown of NUFC’s tactics that i’ve seen. As a fan, thank you for the detail
Great video, makes a lot of sense, you picked up on a lot of things I’ve not seen others mention and stuff I hadn’t noticed too.
Excellent analysis, nice to hear someone give Newcastle the praise they deserve
Brilliant analysis!!! Clear, consise, and east to understand!! Good work impressive 👌✌
Great analysis, loved it!, very knowledgable! HTL 🏴🏳
Eddie Howe is an admirer of Nelson (and his Geordie second IC Collingwood) and stands by Nelson’s last signal before his death at Trafalgar - “Engage the Enemy More Closely.”
top notch analysis man thank you!
Great analysis! I will watch and observe this type of play
Thanks for the fantastic content
Really great to see my club Newcastle featured here. A testament to our amazing progress! HWTL!
Very well put together video 👍👍
They play over 7.5 corners on average each game. Says a lot about how attacking minded they are.
Don't tell it the haters, they only believe Newcastle only time-waste.
@@anon-zk6izTremendous response lad.
Great video! Thanks for the nuanced perspective, i really learned a lot about this confounding team👍🏾
Subbed/bell ✅ 🔔
Great video (other than mistaking Sean for Matty). Really interesting analysis & insight... Appreciate the time & effort you've obviously put into this. 👍
Excellent analysis!
They remind me of Ajax under Ten Hag. Was very impressed with Newcastle this season. Great video, thanks!
This was a great video mate
great analysis!
Absolutely outstanding video
Dude Saint Maximin has got to be one of the most underrated and under talked about players in Europe
Even by our own fans. I hope he doesn't leave this summer, he could be a real force next year.
I get the feeling Howe doesn't trust him tactically and wants more goals out of him to balance it out.
He does seem a complete chaos agent for the opposition though and can easily see why he's a fan favourite.
Maximin so far, has been injured so much that it has been the cause of lack of playing time and probably trust by Eddie howe. On the few occasions he had a start lately, it is clear he is trying to adapt to Eddie's style of football, but seems to progress slower than the likes of Joelinton, Willock, Murphy, etc.
I would also hate to see him leave, but at the same time, it's hard for me to see him staying, if I'm honest.
Thank you for this - you’ve just explained£ why I’ve not seen a game this season where I’ve felt that we’ve run out of ideas in attack. (Unlike the previous 42 seasons when I’ve seen that constantly happen:)
I'm not a NUFC, but I really liked watching them this season
i so much love this team they give me great joy
Also players for the team have commented on Howe's huge focus on "Intensity" as a concept, hence the directness and the winning the ball back so quickly.
He will become the greatest English manager of all time. Absolutely nailed on.
Great video. Many thanks for putting it together. Re M or S - no problem : I doubt anyone taking the time to watch this would have thought it was Matty !
would you please make a video explaining tactics of the recent brighton team?
Underrated channel
Epic video mate
Excellent. Subscribed.
Great video bro
What's your next video plan btw?
Brighton and Newcastle were the teams I enjoyed the most watching this season. They're explosive, creative, a little chaotic, agile, elegant, fun. City is better, I guess, but I don't feel that connection with the team. They're more like a well oiled machine, which is great. They are a pleasure to watch as well.
I see a little bit of legendary Norwegian coach Nils Arne Eggen (Rosenborg in the late 80s, throughout most of the 90s) in Howe. Eggen had "godfotteorien" (lit.: "the good foot theory"), where you emphasize and build upon the natural talent of a player rather than trying to make them fit your system and tactic, and that the whole (team) is way larger than the sum of its parts. The prime individual example in Newcastle is off course Joelinton, a player that was "forced" to mainly play as a striker throughout most of his carreer until Howe showed up, and Joelinton is now shining as a box-to-box midfielder.
Eggen was also known for utilizing a very similar play style to today's Newcastle, and his Rosenborg side often took European giants by surprise, even making it past the Champion's League group stage twice with a (comparatively speaking) tiny club.
Has Howe "secretly" been watching tons of Rosenborg matches from the 90s? Perhaps not, but the similarities are still there imho! 🤩
This channel is very good
Great video !!
It seems very exciting!
I'm utterly biased, but this is excellent analysis. I think Howe really showed how far he has progressed as a manager when changing things up when we hit that post World Cup slump.
Too video and nice to see when someone with balance analyses our play they don’t talk about time wasting😂
fantastic Video
THe best football channel, im not biased
Really interesting and insightful as the many comments testify. There is another dimension to this which Eddie Howe and other leading modern coaches exemplify. They are not cynical and want to see the game played well not just effectively. They want football to represent the best in people not the worst.
great video. only issue is using the fulham game to show them creating space when fulham have one less player
i agree defensively it worked wonders, but we passed up on a lot of goals from too many touches on the wings and no one really in the box for crosses...
still a lot of work IMO...
great video i'd love to see a vid about cuz imo their build is unmatched by any team in europe
Man, if they get Rice, they're gonna jump a gouple of levels by him alone. Two interchangeably offensive and defensive midfielders in the same team. That, a winger and a leftback the first team is set as almost title contenders.
Newcastle's biggest strengths are the pressing, extremely flexible positioning of players and slick passing.
0.31 is Sean longstaff mate
The lad's got the Wrongstaff there like
Howe has done great, very impressive - but the real test stats next year. Its been a rare season where 3 of the established top 5 have been shit for large chunks of the season, and Newcastle have deservedly taken their spot (obviously Utd did well enough to not drop out). But with Poch coming into Chelsea and potentially getting them back on track, and Liverpool improving somewhat towards the end of the season and seemingly targeting every midfielder in the world it will be interesting to see how Newcastle cope with extra pressure domestically and with CL football to juggle. I think they'll remain in the battle for CL spots and that Howe is more than capable of moving them on another step or two, but its different levels needed next year. They need a big transfer window and strong start to the season.
Not a Newcastle fan, but after the dark years of your previous owner you guys deserve this upturn.
Howe-ever ...see what you did mate..love your videos
If they hadn't drawn so many games they would have been pushing for a top 2 place last season. Finding a way to turn more of those draws into wins is the key to them making progress this season.
This is the reason he should have been manager of the year.
Can you make a video on why Xavi wants players like Gundogan, Foyth and Zubimendi? A tactical preview of what we might see next season
its almost like a blend between the ideas of positional play and that of flumense-esque relationship football, what I think is impressive is howe(pun intended) he's doing it in the prem
the forwards movements reminded me of your fluminense video. Its like he's the direct-english-style Fernando Diniz
I really like the runs they make. It almost looks like they're trying to take the ball off their teammates until the go flying past them into space.
Which software platform do you use for game analysis 😊
Eddie Howe gives the players freedom that is something more coaches should do
Good video but I disagree with Pope being poor with his feet, as a season ticket holder at NUFC I actually think he is average/ok on the deck. The reason why we don’t play short from Pope is because we have a massive advantage aerially and in duels for second balls. Joelinton, Willock, Longstaff, Wilson and Isak mean that we usually try to bypass another teams press by going long on purpose. Knowing we will win the ball most of the time. It does tie in with your ‘directness’ view as well! Good video though just thought i would share my take!
Also Pope's saves have been critical, especially the recent Leicester one.
Agree with you, Eddie Howe used to maintain very high possession numbers with Bournemouth and their setup from goalkicks allows them to play short if needed.
Anyone saw Burn occasionally overlapping on the RIGHT wing? Running forward like he was Roberto Carlos switching sides... 🥰
you should make a video of brighton
I am excited to see how he will perform in Europe with better players. I see why Arsenal wanted him years ago
Great analysis . . . . Eddie Howe should have won manager of the season, as Newcastle were easily the most improved team.
1:05 he was doing some goat stuff there, he was very close to. Let's keep Almiron in mind
Hey Purist, how do you watch old matches? Is it through a website or software?
Given how energetic we have been all season, we may have to change a bit since we'll be involved in Europe and it wouldn't be possible to cope with that with the same style of play, players will be too much exhausted and it may effect our league results
Howe tactic is incredibly fluid. I have no idea why it works and even if the same style can be implemented in a different team to be honest. You really need players that knows how to play in multiple position and style to pull this off. It’s like someone is allow to just do what they want and the rest of the team will cover for him.
Make a video on Lens next. I feel like their season is out of nowhere
What type of player do you think will improve Newcastle next season? Personally, I think Tierney will make a massive difference down the left. A dynamic, defensive midfield will solidify the centre and free up guimaraes.
I think it's only natural that when we sign more individually brilliant players that control will come back into things.
Defence wins trophies at the end of the day, and when we have players in all positions capable of winning games on their own, we won't need to play this high risk brand of football as we can just dictate the game, and have the top tier players pick teams off eventually.
excellent season for Newcastle, do the champions league proud and win it, good luck from a Chelsea fan
Intensity our identity
Order in Defense
Chaos in Attack
Sounds like Tonali will fit right in :)
