Understanding The Stages of How The TSS Pre-Collision System (PCS) Works | Toyota

  • This video will explain and provide a clear understanding of the different stages of the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) Pre-Collision System (PCS) and what you could experience from the inside the vehicle. There are different stages of the PCS system and a better understanding of how the system works can be a benefit to the driver.
The Pre-Collision System (PCS) is one of the technologies that Toyota has packaged together in a suite of active safety technologies called Toyota Safety Sense (TSS). There are three different types of TSS systems (TSS-C, TSS-P, TSS 2.0) and the technologies in each can vary by model and year. Please visit Toyota.com/safety-sense or check your owner’s manual for model specific features, guidelines and limitations.
The PCS system uses an integrated forward-facing camera and grille-mounted radar, or laser system designed to help mitigate or hopefully avoid certain frontal collisions. TSS 2.0 enhances this system with the addition of low-light detection for pedestrians, plus daytime detection of bicycles.
    Vehicle Detection
When PCS determines that the possibility of a frontal collision with another vehicle is high, it prompts the driver to take evasive action and brake by using an audio and visual alert. If the driver notices the hazard and brakes, PCS may use Brake Assist to provide additional braking force.
If the driver does not brake in a set time and the system determines that the possibility of a frontal collision with another vehicle is extremely high, the system may automatically apply the brakes, reducing speed to help mitigate the impact or avoid the collision entirely if possible.
    Pedestrian and Bicycle Detection
Under certain conditions, if the Pre-Collision System determines that the possibility of a frontal collision with a pedestrian or bicycle is high, it prompts the driver to take evasive action and brake by using an audio and visual alert. If the driver notices the hazard and brakes, the system may use Brake Assist to provide additional braking force.
If the driver does not brake in a set time and the system determines that the risk of collision with a pedestrian or bicycle is extremely high, the system may automatically apply the brakes, reducing speed to help mitigate the impact or avoid the collision entirely if possible.
For TSS 2.0, PCS is designed to detect bicycles in daytime situations, as well as designed to detect vehicles and pedestrians in both daytime and low-light situations.
Although demonstrated on the 2019 Toyota C-HR, this feature is available on various other Toyota models. See owner’s manual for model specific guidelines and limitations.

It saved me in a roundabout when a car in front of me started breaking suddenly when I was increasing my speed and wasn't expecting the slowdown. The PCS red message along with the sound alert was enough to jolt me into hitting the brakes immediately and I stopped in time to avoid a collision. I love my Toyota C-HR, and I'm very thankful for such features!

Just recently had a scenario where the PCS was really helpful. A car suddenly stopped ahead and while I did apply the brakes the distance was narrow. Pressed on the brakes, pcs applied the additional force and helped me come to a stop within one car length. Very helpful, very useful and a lifesaver in a worse case scenario which thankfully did not happen this time. Thanks toyota!

To be honest this is my first Toyota. I have been an avid Honda owner. Knowing Toyota's reliability and the need for a truck (Tacoma), I went with the TRD PRO in Lunar Rock.
This is the first vehicle I have ever owned that had all of this safety technology. Thankfully I haven't had a chance to use the (PCS), but I have had some Lane Departure warnings, so I know these safety systems are on and working.
Keep up the great work @Toyota USA!

Have you ever had "emergency" situation on the road? If you are breaking on time the system simply will not activate. I suggest you to try on a paper box or set our windshield sun screen(if you have one) on the middle of empty non used road and try yourself, the car should break. My Corolla even break when I try to park in parking where there is a lot of leafy bushes and it detects them also as object then my car suddenly breaks.

My 2019 Toyota Rav 4 has all the safety features but I don’t think PCS works. I never get any alerts either and in DC traffic that’s strange. I asked the service center that I bought it at to fix it and they told me I’m a good driver, but I’m not that great. I rented a Chevy Blazer 2022 and everything worked including PCS . I’m going to take it to a Toyota dealership and see what they say. But I worry that when I pass someone if you have to narrowly it won’t let you and will apply breaks. It’s not ready yet if you ask me. I do like rear cross traffic alert and BSM but you can’t rely solely on BSM to change lanes but it’s helpful in certain situations

There are few things as terrifying as the unexpected hand of a programmer reaching into my car at speed and attenpting to take control away from my hands and feet. I just bought a beautiful 2018 Sienna EXL from Carmax, and was unaware this system was on. While approaching a complex freeway construction area on HWY50 in Sacramento, the system attempted to wrest control from me which would have wrecked me and several vehicles around me. Scared the bejezus out of me. I don't like it. Having a total disable as default at startup should one prefer a functioning car without 'Nanny State' hands in it should be the baseline, Toyota, not the exception. Otherwise, I love the machine.

    2 points:
What if this nanny system determines, that I'm doing somethimg unsafe when I'm not and slams the brakes when I need to accelerate instead?
Passing a vehicle on a 2 lane road would be a great example....let's say that the system somehow misinterprets my intention and applies brakes either when trying to pass this vehicle, or worse...when I need to step on the gas, as the oncoming traffic is fast approaching and I need to complete this passing manouver faster.
Any interference of this nanny system would be a death sentence in this situation.
    Scenario 2:
It wasn't that long ago, when people were getting swarmed by violent mobs all over the US while driving their cars....the only way to save their life would be to plow through this violent mob and escape.
How would this be accomplished with the pedestrian detection being active?
