- How do I pick the right discs for my bag? Is my bag setup the best way possible? I get loads of messages a week from people asking me to take a look at their bag and honestly....I love it. I think caddying is such a fantastic part of the game, and the caddy game begins by ensuring your golfer has the right tools needed to succeed out there on the track.
The interesting part about building a bag to me is trying to assess the player's game while also looking at what disc options are out there to suit their hand size, arm speed, and shot preferences. It can be an overwhelming process, but I love trying to help players narrow down their bag to find what's ideal. Unfortunately, there is only so much time in the day and I can only chat with so many people! So I wanted to put together a quick video that covers three major issues I see people have when trying to build their bags! What are they? You'll have to watch to find out!!
Have you heard of the Birdie Fam? It's a community of disc golfers who are striving to excel and improve together. We are going to talk about your struggles and plateaus in a safe and healthy environment. When we come together as a family, we'll grow together as people. I think you have to let Trevor throw ur precious child into water it’s only fair
I was thinking the same thing...rip green slammer...
Falling in love with stock stuff is something i learned from the start! Find stuff that flys like you want it and it will always be there
My bag building methodology:
1-Figure out what speed disc you can throw the farthest.
2-Select 3 speeds of discs (one of them being the fastest speed from #1). Example 11, 7, 5.
3-Select an understable, stable, and overstable disc for each of the 3 speeds.
4-Select a throwing putter (one you can throw accurately).
5-Select a putting putter.
6-Practice
7-Practice
8-Practice
And I like to rely on stock discs! :)
I feel like this is mostly what I’ve done. I’m only on Step 7 though…
Although I do have some discs that are likely too high a speed to make sense for me. My hope is that with improvement, I see those discs go farther for me.
My problem is that I like to try a bunch of discs, but I’m super inconsistent so idk what works and what doesn’t 😅
Man, hit me right in the feels…. LOL 🥺😅😂
Same 😂
I stand by the warship to an unnatural degree, but I cycle them fairly quickly because I like the fresh flight. I also know there are many discs incredibly similar to it, but I am just in love haha. The bad side is, that many of my best shots happen with it, which has resulted in a good chunk of people I play with picking them up, then having less success with it, and thinking I'm crazy lol
Cycling and finding a similar mold to how your beat in disc flies is key. Great advice!
lost my eagle a week ago at the sports plex in Opelika, and i think its helped me more than ill ever realize
love the content my guy! your enthusiasm is so powerful.
Great video Robbie! Being able to replace a disc easily is something that I keep in consideration since I first found out how discs wear in differently
Thanx for the Tip as always RC👍
Really helpful video for me since I have only been playing for a few months. I LOVE trying new discs or ones that feel similar to something I already throw.
Love your stuff Robbie! Keep it up!
awesome vid.
One way to beat in multiple is field work. I throw 100-150 tee shots on certain holes on a local course using only 1 or 2 molds. About 10-15 discs total. Do that once or twice a week and they all tend to beat in together.
Also...when trying to replace a well beat in disc, this is where flight numbers can really help. Look at your number for stability, then check one that similar speed and glide, but go less stable. Often you can get it close to your beat in one. Ex...I've heard a shark is similar to a beat in roc.
Great video, hits home for sure. I have to cycle my Destroyers, Shrike, Buzzz and my Judge putters just as you said. My one disc I’ve had that I call my child is my G-Star Thunderbird. It’s been with me from the beginning and I can’t find another disc that throws like it new. The pD S-line comes really close after a little work. Thanks again Robbie, as always I love the content.
my friends always give me crap, telling me I have too many discs. I have absolutely no attachment to any of the discs in my bag, and am constantly looking for a better fit, trying all of the similar options on the market. Sure, I Spend a lot of money on discs, but this is my main hobby, and I am privileged to have quite a bit of disposable income. I totally agree with you , that if you can afford to do so, play around with various molds and see if a better option exists for you. A good example in my bag was when I tried a saakibomb slammer, I loved the zone, but bought a slammer, and found that it is much more accurate for my arm to have the slammer fill that slot. I still toy with other discs in that slot, but so far the slammer is king for me.
Awesome video thank you.
Great video!
I was going to hit the like but anyways, but I pressed it extra quick when you said you were bagging the Evader 🙌
Fire vid! Super enjoyable💯
Yep I totally hear you on the precious child illustration. Mine is a innova dragon 163g. Great vid again Robbie C.
Robby, one mistake/realization that I've made is I'll fall in love with a certain disc but as a newer player (3yrs) my form keeps developing and the disc I once loved now flies weird. That growth is something challenging when "building a bag" and I'd love if you could share some tips and tricks
This! I used to love my heat (9 5 -3 1) because I threw everything on a hyzer. Well I worked on my form and that disc got removed from my bag. I threw it recently and was like wow this disc is a roller now!
Although I will say that no matter my form I will always love my maidens 😍
I've just replaced a flippy Thunderbird for this reason. It flipped up even for a noodle arm like me, but I hated throwing it because I knew if I lost it I couldn't replace it. Picked up a roadrunner, and that beat in Thunderbird actually flies like a new Roadrunner! Now I'm not worried about losing my Roadrunner because I can replace it easily, and I still have the same flight in my bag
Love my Roadrunner!
really nice video.
I bag four Mantises in different conditions/plastics that I can’t imagine taking out of my bag. I don’t really have a good reason to have that specific disc or so many of them, I just like them. They’ve pushed my Teebirds out and I’m considering taking my Eagles out too.
Hey man, I've been hearing you talk uo that Pig ever since I found your channel. I ran across one today, went to throw a practice round and theu were hosting a tournament up at the course. A man had a horse trailer full of disc golf gear and I was glancing over everything and I ran across 1 in a bin, so I snatched it up. Haven't thrown it yet but man does it feel good in the hand. It's a bot more tacky and grippy than i was expecting, but I can only think thats a good thing. Gonna try your idea and throw a Pig only round next time I go. I'm expecting to shoot 18 under as highly as you praised it🤣🤣🤣
Love the idea of cycling. I keep plenty of spares of my main molds (Mamba, Valkyrie, Buzz) but only break out a new one when it falls into the canal of death at Centre Hills.
I cycle Mavericks and Abyss's and Pro Beasts. But I also throw the Innova Champion Cro, which seems to be a not very highly produced mold. I have a backup on the shelf, but am constantly considering buying others
Yeah i did the same dumped all Innova but left a few and started with an open bag too
dude. love your podcast logo. randomly found your podcast and CZcams channel in a 1 week stretch. sweeeet!
Welcome to the channels!!
@@RobbieCDiscgolf thanks! really good stuff I love them both!
Lol - YES! I relate to you Eagle. I just retired a Z Nuke and an ESP Nuke, both extremely beat 1st runs with the Scorch. It flys like, we’ll, my super beat Nukes, but consistent. I was so anti new molds for a bit.
Check out the exodus, by infinite disc! It's the eagle L mold. And I've found it flies for me (at altitude in Denver) like eagles fly for Calvin. Good amount of flip up but super reliable stability at the end.
this. the current splatter star run in stock is MONEY
As a thrower of Evaders, I hope you like it. I've always said it seems so similar to an Eagle so I could see you digging it but will still want to see it get seasoned before getting that good pop up. I keep a beat one and a newer one in my bag at ALL TIMES lol.
I also subscribe to many of the ideas you mentioned here like buying backups discs that aren't stock runs (looking at you, Nathan Queen Color Glow Wraiths) and being able to throw discs that you can throw properly off the shelf. That said, my precious child is my Emac Truth with the Huk Lab tri-fly that is always going to be with me forever. You can't stop me 😭
Evaders are money
Hey there Robie! Thanks for all the great disc golf content! I recently watched your small series all about distance and I was looking to get more pointed tips at my own game. Somehow I remember there being a discord for the birdie fam but I can't find it anywhere. You think I could have a link to there so I can get some tips for an upcoming tournament? Appreciate it man!
I love the Evader, man! I hope you have a great time with your new Eagle! (Evagle?)
good stuff. covers an issue I had recently I had a wonder-luna that was more understable than any other.. cannot be replicated.. I pulled off some great throws and relied on it heavily. lost it in the drink at a new course on an ace run. I foolishly tried buying some other luna plastic types to see if I could recreate it. that didn't work :). what DID work, is just buying an understable putter that is meant to fly like that out of the box - I went with a fierce, and it flies similarly enough to do the role I wanted it to do in my bag. I am going to take that as a lesson learned and avoid it with other slots in my bag.
I used to only throw Innova but now I can't get enough of my moonshine harp and my line 1 Burg. love them couldn't see the game without him now. Still throwing innova distance drivers and Fairways though..
Best thing to do is find molds that out of the box / off the shelf fly like a perfect beat in _______ that you would normally throw. That way you don’t rely on accidents in the field making a disc perfect, or get sad when you have to replace a disc. It takes more time and money to find these, but it’s worth it over time and will help your game.
I have found that trilogy plastic does this. They are perfect new and then beat to Flippy in most cases
@@twocrowsknows2811 for me I was innova for 15 years and just found mvp/axiom discs particularly in fission plastic do this for me. But glad you found your preference, that’s half the battle.
@@kieronmckay4276 nah I still throw Innova and Discmania myself I've spent years getting them where I want
I wish there was store like this near me
When I first got into disc golf I tried different brands and molds. Until I found a Axiom Wrath in the woods. I tried it a few times and it flew great with my throwing style. So I bought a new one and got the God given Axiom Crave (I have 3 now in different plastics). I am a Axiom guy now with some MVP styles. I would say I would trade out for putters because I haven't found a good feeling one yet. Other molds don't feel good in my hand so I don't throw them lol.
I just got my first pig and it is nasty wish I would have tried it sooner. I definitely fall into.this video I love mvp but some mvp disc are not good for me and some other bands are so transitioning from all mvp to a mixed bag
Robbie, the Super Stingray is nothing like a Stingray. I have a Champ one. The closest thing I found to a Star Stingray is the Piwakawaka by RPM
Excellent tips. I have a suggestion for a video. How about a discussion about choosing a wind fighter. Will a more stable, yet lightweight disc fight the wind as well as a heavier, but more neutral disc? Say a lightweight DX or GStar Firebird vs a heavy Star, Champion, or Halo Thunderbird. Which is going to work better as a wind fighter for the average player? And how can we use that information to build a better bag?
I need that alabama disc golf shirt asap as possible.
Make that 2. I want one also
I fell into several of these traps early on, now the only "Trap" I have is my love for my beat in Pig. It's less a trap and more of a overconfidence in what I can accomplish with that disc (usually distance wise)
Thank you for informing me that my champion Stingray is worth something lol. I had no idea!
I love my Star Stingray! Won an ace pot throw off at Northwoods in 06 with it, made me $140. Also nabbed my first ace with it. I’d love to see a Halo Star version at some point.
Try a Pewakawaka by RPM. Feel similar with great turn and glide
An eagle has a glide of 4 not 5 😬
Love the video! Keep it up.
After having tried the Teebird, the Evader, and the Eagle, I have found that I love the Eagle. The Evader, I found to be the flippiest disc of the group, and I want this slot to have a reliably sharp fade. The Eagle does that for me.
Also, what’s your take on the MVP Volt or Terra for this slot? Too fast? Too overstable?
Some great considerations to keep in mind.
Sometimes even stock runs start flying differently, all those people who love their PFN or Patent Pending whatever can surely attest. Now that MVP is making 10x as many discs as a few years ago new volts don't fly like the old volts, imo, so I am currently exploring other options after a lost disc scare.
Volts were cool, but the TERRA kicked that thing out of the bag. Wonder what they will replace the amp with. Have you thrown or tried the TERRA?
I mean ask any destroyer thrower and they’ll tell you how certain runs are wildly different, some good some bad, and will pay out for the good runs to pretty absurd degrees.
MVP/Axiom have evolved from years ago runs to now, but are supposedly much more reliable run to run today than before and being more “true to their flight numbers” (from what I’ve heard).
I fell into a trap where I tried to apply your multiple mold pig philosophy, but as a new player everything in my bag was brand new. I realized that on the course I'd be thinking, "Man, once I get these discs beat in I'll be able to shape this shot perfectly." In the mean time though I'd have nothing to hit that line... Just branched out and started trying molds that hit those lines with much less beat in, and I'm definitely feeling more capable in those scenarios
I think it's fun to experiment with mfrs and discs, esp when starting. (Foundation Discs has a lot.😆) While settling on some molds is probably smart, how do you know which without trying different discs?
Reviews can give you decent insight, but honestly you kinda just have to throw them. My favorite method for trying is borrowing friends discs or playing bag swap rounds though!
Great info as always Robbie. I’m curious why the manufacturers don’t just try to mold beat in discs if that makes sense… Why, if discs get better with age, aren’t they made that way in the first place…???
It's not that a beat in disc is inherently better flying. You have thrown it enough to beat it in and have learnt exactly what it does. If you tried my beat in Viking Dics Barbarian in storm plastic, you would see nothing special in it, while for me it is the perfect 7 speed understable disc at 70-90 meters.
When i first built a full bag, I tried to buy discs from different manufactures for each slot just to try out the different plastic. While I have molds I like today, some I have backups for and others I don't cause at the end of the day anything can be replaced.
U rock buddy
For Stingray lovers like me, check out new Dx Manta. Flight is really similar to Stingray and has even bit more glide to it. I got old Star Stingray and Dx Manta and I absolutely love them!
Or a Piwakawaka by RPM. Very similar
Should check out the Infinite Exodus for the Eagle slot
You have to give the infinite discs exodus a whirl. If it isn’t the eagle-l mold exactly, than it’s incredibly similar.
I felt that rare/expensive part. I was carrying an incredibly expensive bag for a long time. I played a few bag swap rounds with friends and that turned me onto several stock discs and I eventually picked up several. That became semi-expensive in its own right 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣fair!!
Amen!
I have learned from losing my precious child to always have backups for everything. And I try not to get attached to one certain disc. Helps me try new shots in holes I always throw one disc on.
Do they disc trial days, like in real golf where you can test out new clubs and get fitted?
I have solved all these problems. I stopped buying discs and just use the ones I have. I have around 50-60. But not changed any of the discs in my bag for a while and I du everything to avoid losing them. Buying discs in the pandemic was a good way to learn what they all do but I'm good enough now to adjust to the disc rather than needing a disc that fits my throw and I find there is just no good reason to spend money on more.
Hello its me! Trap 3! Rest i do good, cykel discs and all that. WTB Opto-x saints :P
I thought the Eahle was one of my best discs and have 3 of them but then i threw the explorer and the teebird and realized that is way more of the disc i wanted
While I have filtered out alot of my old innova discs over the years, i wouldn't dare stop carrying a leopard3. On certain shots I cant just rock that disc
I suggest getting premium plastic when it flies the way you want it to out of the box. I mean plastic will keep it intended flight longer and make it easier to replace.
I’m new to the game and right now my precious child is the Innova Invader.
Are you not on team Innova anymore? You mentioned your back to a mixed bag?
I have a brand problem ( Maybe becouse of all my letter combinations). I cant have a mixed bag they all need to be the same brand. This is really hard for me becouse i get to try some awesome discs on the course.
You should try the spark from latitude 64
It feels very similar to the eagle but out of the box is less stable
As someone who throws a Latitude 64 Caltrop right now, it pains me that there haven't been any new runs for it in a hot minute. Luckily I have a backup that i've been working to fly the same should the worst happen. My precious child is definitely my Mint Discs Jackalope, I can throw that boy on almost any line i want.
Where did that inspirational oinklet shirt come from ?
I decided a while back I only wanted trilogy discs in my bag. Well. Its got a few Kastaplast discs now , and discmania will probably have a spot or two. If someone had told me "just put as many plastic types in your hands as you can" it would have saved me some serious cash. Kastaplast K1 and the Gold line/fuzion/tournament plastic is what I'm all about. That high end translucent plastic just aint what works best for me. Just another little thought.
K3 plastic beats in pretty nice not gonna lie
Same, I love Hybrid plastic tho too. It seems to last forever
Hey I'm starting my own channel I have two basically raw videos of partial rounds on my channel I would like to hear any tips you have for starting and maintaining a channel dedicated to disc golf
I replaced my pig with a hawg and there's only one run of them lol and one plastic I dont think I will lose it as its my approach disc but I still had to scrounge ebay for a second one and it cost me around 30$ same as my champion stingray. I throw it so well that I didnt think it could be replaced but an esp buzzz flies just as well for me.
@@Jonny_J13 you think so? they did just release some more super stingrays
@@Jonny_J13 youre the goat

Great tips Robbie, but Simon is going to win Worlds this year.
I’m down for a Simon vs Calvin showdown!!
My takeaway from the video? At 6:40 Robbie C suggests to go out and buy 5 or 6 Rebecca Cox Grand Glory's. 😁
🤣🤣it is a pretty awesome disc!
Mine's the Leopard 3...
So maybe I should buy a couple more Skyquest Medusas.
How do you recommend people trying different discs without just going and buying them?
Good idea. Hopefully you live near a course with an active player base. Pop along to a club event or tournament and ask around. Disc golf is a very friendly sport, players often try each others discs.
There's no magic disc, just the ability to throw 'em, and my bag does not end the season the way it starts the season. I constantly try new stuff, swap stuff out, whatever. About two weeks ago, I pulled the Entropy from my bag and replaced it with an Anvil. A couple months ago, the Stag got pulled. No replacement, just decided I could cover those shots with other discs.
I mean, I lost a well-seasoned Crave the other night. The group I was with was ready to keep looking after about 5 minutes; I told them to forget it, they make more Craves every day. If I can't figure out how to throw one of those, then I'll try other stuff until I do.
as always great content...had a friend rent a scuba diver...yes RENT... a scuba diver.. to look for his "precious child".. very deep water he tried to find himself but just to deep...and the diver didn't find it...found alot of other disc but not his...
Jesus
my "special" piggy fly like P2 these days, but nothin finger rolls better than PIG
If the knowing better dude played disc golf
(I mean this as a massive compliment)
I hear a lot that the emperor flies like a beat-in destroyer.
Simple... Dynamic, lat 64, westside......ahhhh i do wish i could get another fluid plastic slammer
I yeeted my star stingray into a river this May...i miss her so... I am trying out other molds but nothing like my star stingray
RPM Piwakawaka
Try the fd...goes super far and straight.
My bag is all Innova
They aren't making the stingray anymore!!! Ahhhhhhh!!
I feel like an open bag isnt a great idea for starters because your talking 100s of discs to choose from. If you stick with a brand theyll most likely have everything you need to get started and then once you get those down you can work your way through other brands and discs.
I also think even though flight numbers can be misleading, it’s more likely they’re consistent within a brand and it makes it easier to get a disc that works without trying a bunch
*Putting down my own precious Child (a 9 year old Star TL)* Bagging Stock instead of Special Runs is defninitly the better idea. And you dont have to pay like 1500$ for a Sexton Firebird ;-).
I used to love my TL
How is it possible, that in Europe (f.e. here in Germany) it´s no problem to buy hundreds of "Rask" (even they are now in discount for 7,90€) or a "Stingray"? Probably Europe is way behind and this game is still an "underground" one.
Wait what!? A Jamey Stegmaier Scythe pig?
Had a friend and Birdie Fam member come across them and hook me up!! Jason is the man!!
I’m twelve and I’ve been watching for about a year I had a pig I could say was my precious child but as I was practicing in my back yard I got a little exited and threw it over to my neighbors they have three Germans Shepard and it was thrown back a week later in half that was a while ago now I can throw 350 Accurate and am playing well against the adults in my area all thanks to your vid’s 👍🏻😃
Thanks Robbie!!! 👍🏻
Did the Pig come back without holes??
Sadly now in came back in shreds 😢
Also thank you for the reply made my day can’t wait for the next upload
I just bag a 165 Eagle and now I'm Vinny
You know Robbie, if you think you have too many eagles or pigs, My bags always open
🤣🤣🤣
@@RobbieCDiscgolf I have actually never thrown a pig. 😂😂 Keep up the good work! I would love an opinion of my bag
First step buy a zone and buzzz and never look back
Innova's new discs are trash, bought 6 archons...none of them fly remotely the same. They don't even try anymore.
If it ain't broke don't fix it. I don't care if there's a marginally better version of my discs. Ricky won a tourney with a grocery bag of used discs.
