  • Wait....are we throwing down a distance video on the channel?? One of my favorite parts of coaching is getting to work with folks on an individual basis when I can, but one of the major drawbacks is enough time to work with more people individually. As I continue to work with folks, it's fascinating how some of the same problems occur with different folks and body types. We setup a special day at Dynamic Discs Iron City, offering free form reviews and recorded them all day. So what was the major factor I kept seeing players come into when it came to distance?? You'll have to watch to find out!

This video right here is one of the main reasons why I subbed. You not only show the reason why some disc golfs can't throw far, but it's not because they are throwing high-speed discs or something like that. It is the fact that the fundamental stuff is incorrect and you're trying to the best you can to correct the most common mistakes new players make that might ccause them to quit early on. Thank you, Robbie.

I just had my first live training and the trainer stopped everything I learned from YT. That day nothing worked....one day later less reach back more whip good pressure and athletic stance and damn it feels like there is something going on💪

    • @JayDeeTee
      @JayDeeTee Před 11 měsíci

The best advice was not reaching back but turn shoulder to 90 degrees and nearly 10 o clock release point with the feeling that the disc rips out of the hand and of course hips first. I use a strap to train whip and hip first

Robbie, this is your best content to date. Others wont see its beauty. Wisdom often falls on deaf ears.
I've been watching your channel for a while. Your understanding has blossomed.
I'm PDGA 308. I agree with your observations. We in DG need to stop talking about "throwing" the disc. Teach from the beginning, "whipping" the disc. This is formally, conservation of momentum. Feeling the hit spot is the snapping of the whip. It applies to all throws, even putting.
The second force available to everyone regardless of athletic ability is elastic potential, as you mention. A relaxed muscle stretches more than a flexed one. Flexing the back muscles and core, while the hips slide forward and turn at the moment of maximum stretch releases the elastic potential. The "slingshot" or rubber band snaps.
Just these two forces get people to 300, any age or athleticism.
This is the foundation for adding athletic skills in legs to increase linear force and rotational force, etc. That take people to 400+.
You understand that throwing with the arm and muscle tension in the arm are the biggest barriers to distance. Bravo!
Thanks for putting this out there. Let's hope these ideas spread.

I never thought about "focusing" on my off shoulder to formalize the back swing. That makes so much sense now. Once I get some time, I think I'm going out to the field to make sure and dial it in a little bit and warm up, then out to the course to see what I can do with it. Thanks again, Robbie!

I live in Canada - so we only have small window of daily play due to the winter . You will plateau naturally in any games you play so don't be hard on yourself have fun is the goal.

I never threw stones as a kid - throwing a cricket or baseball is a whip like action even playing badminton or mixed social softball in my thirties/forties - it took me awhile to warm up and loosen my body - funny thing is at my high school probably worse than average throw - yet I could judo throw in fights and won a school shotput and arm wrestling comp - so yes I believe this is way for me to go - should go back to swimming for fun to loosen up though as have very inflexible back I've seen people throw balls further than me - with just a casual forearm whip

I’ll an old timer (PDGA #22644) and learned with rounding and muscling. This video is great and the left shoulder tip is great.
One thing I’ve noticed is that when I muscle the throw, my throwing arm gets in front or leads and I have a tough time engaging my left side. It also prevents from getting that good lag of a loose throwing arm to whip through.
Keep up the good work, Robbie!

Robbie - Holy Shit, this is GOLD
I think you are underestimating the value of this video. I sincerely think this is the most important form lesson on CZcams.
    This is the 450’ barrier.
For the uninitiated, every 50’ of distance is harder to get than the last. New players always get hung up at 350, then 400, and few people break 450’.
Robbie was spot on that you WILL get stuck between 4 and 500 when you pull, strong arm, or start the chainsaw. BUT THATS WHAT EVERYONE TEACHES. Then you have to unlearn those habits and it sucks.
Another key point that I think could be emphasized a bit more. You have to reach more out than back. If back is 180 degrees, you need to reach closer to 120. That allows you to rotate further back or ‘earlier’ in the throw. You don’t create enough space by extending straight back. Notice how much more your off shoulder pulls your throwing arm in, when you reach out as opposed to back.
Seriously 90% of players won’t appreciate how important that video is.

Great video Robbie!! I will definitely try this as I’m sure I’ve been using my arm as you referenced that players might be doing. Thanks for all the great tips!!

Man o man. This video has just helped me so much. I’ve been playing for about 6 years and could never figure out the off arm. It always was dead weight behind. That advice on pulling the shoulder blade back gave me that aha moment! I can’t wait to get out there and practice.

Thanks a ton for this one, Robbie! I love your content, but this one just hit different. The thought of pulling the left shoulder back and then driving it down through with the loose arm was something that turned on a light immediately....my throws were just shooting straight out right on the line I was on. You're the best!

Robbie C., THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH(IN CAPS!!!!), for making this beginner tutorial for disc golf throws. The major importance of keeping the arms loose and getting that back shoulder up and driving down into the brace leg and foot is priceless!. The difference is evident and I for one will attest to that. Thank you again Robbie C. for all the disc golf instruction you have give to us players trying to get better at the game. Before you know it, and I will spread the word of your channel, your 55K number of subscribers will be at 100K soon!.☺Most Sincerely, Bill M., PDGA member 7378 and life long promoter of disc golf since 1993☺

as someone who started out throwing almost exclusively forehand, if you haven't seen it, Eagle's forehand clinic video from a couple years ago is top notch and really breaks things down nicely

I haven't taken it to the field yet, but just wanted to say your description and demenstration of how to achieve the correct arm positioning and throwing movement for disc golf was the first time it has "clicked" for me. So, thank you for that.

Thanks Robbie for another wonderful and informative video. Distance is my weakest part of the game and I’m glad to hear playing tight is not making it any better. I experience problems with timing on the reach back as well. We hope to see you next time we come by the shop.

This is more of what I have seen Paul McBeth and Drew Gibson doing as I watch them on their videos, but I can’t get them to explain it like Robbie C. Now I can use this to train. Forget about they lawn mower pull that I have been trying to do with little success.
