  • There are currently over 1,400 molds approved by the PDGA which means there are a few options to consider when trying to build your bag. The tricky part is...not all of these discs are meant for beginners. Having the right disc in your hand can be the difference between you falling in love with the sport or quitting out of frustration early on.
Today I want to comb through some of the most popular manufacturers and give you a host of options to consider for discs that can work for beginners. Not only do I believe these discs are best for beginners, but I stand by their effectiveness as I have recommended each disc on this list to a player at one point in time. We've learned from the last time we did a video like this, and I'm hopeful that we've put together a solid list people can look to for years to come! What discs would I recommend? You'll have to watch to find out!!

The Proxy is so great! Started bagging one a couple months ago and I can't imagine playing without one now, especially on wooded courses. The Fuse! Bought it as an understable mid range that I could get to go straight when I fist built a bag. As I've grown I've acquired other discs but the fuse is a staple that won't leave my bag. Tall panning hyzers, flip ups, slow to fast working turn overs, fore hand or back hand I love this disc.

Thanks Robbie for all the great content. As a beginner disc golf player being introduced to the game via my grandkids, I have been through a lot of discs building my bag, many that you mentioned. I didn’t have success until I discovered the importance of lightweight and ultralight discs. I had a breakthrough in my game discovering “Dino” discs from Infinite Discs. Flipping them over and seeing ABC and Gateway as their manufacturer lead me to finding discs from 110 to 130 range with discs that can be understable to neutral to overstable. I’ve since started recommending Gateway starter pack lightweights of Spear, Element and Wizard. My peers and I are not hoping to get stronger with more arm speed in the next 5 years, but rather hoping to be physically able to walk the courses in 5 years. These lightweight discs are the best for senior beginners.

Anything with a -3 or -4 turn number. As an older player with a slower arm, I use a Pearl, Diamond, Paradox, and Underworld. All highly understable, but all go slightly to the right or dead straight. For people with more arm speed, those discs make for great hyzer-flip discs, or for touch anhyzers.

I've had three people impressed with the Diamond. I prefer Latitude 64's Opto plastic, but choose whatever you like. Another midrange I'd recommend is Latitude 64 Compass. It holds well with the wind. It keeps a straight reliable line and gives a nice light fade. The fade is a 1 and is consistent to help with your approach.
Recently, I've bagged an MVP Volt and recommend it for when you need to approach and have a bigger fade or further distance.

Heats were my favorite driver for a long time. Since getting somewhat better the Passion has taken over for similar lines. It's just a very long buzz for me. I still bag 2 heats though. 1 is super beat in for crazy woods needs, and the other is just a nice slow anny mover.
For reference for my disc reccs, my form still is a work in progress, max distance 370, average accurate drive is 315. I have an almost full discraft bag (still can't get me away from star wraiths), but my most used discs are passions, buzzz, wraiths, Lunas, and my new favorite is the new C line MD3. Once that beats in it just might make the buzzzes jealous. For reference on a flat line it's 200ft an in Luna, 190-240 buzzz/md3, 230-300 passion, 270-330 wraith. There is of course some overlap depending on course, elevation, woods, and just how the arm is feeling each round.

Bounty! The best understable mid! I like the Bounty's flatter feel compared to the Tursas or Fuse. Also, the Essence is an amazing 9 speed driver, sneaky glide and very controllable

The first thing I bought was the innova 5 disc starter pack and while the destroyer is 12 speed it actually went further than the other discs right from the start. There was a brief period as I improved my form where the teebird and leopard went almost as far, however, it was really cool as a new player to have a disc that could reach 250 feet from the start. I think a lot of new players could be well served by a good distance driver. The other disc that was really special for me was the wizard. It was a big improvement for me personally as a new player learning to putt.

One disc I have fallen in love with is my Latitude 64 Opto Jade. This disc is my favorite it flies straight and with only 2 months of experience, I could not recommend it more. I also use the deputy putter and patiently waiting for my Fuse to arrive to give it a couple of throws.

The disc that really helped my game take off was the Innova DX Beast. Pretty readily available and once you've gotten the DX plastic down, you can move up to the Pro or Champion plastics. I still have one of each plastics in my bag today.

My 5 first discs were a Macana from Latitude, a Reactor from MVP, a River from Latitude in retro burst plastic, a pretty beat in saint pro and a discmania fever. Still in love with the reactor and the saint pro. The fever was my first disc to make 250ft from stand still.
I recently bought some beginner discs for a friend of mine, got him a Ruby a Pearl and a River from Latitude

    Sensei is great throwing putter
Origin is actually more similar to the bounty than the buzz but a phenomenal disc

I bought a set of discs that are not well known at all, After learning what type of discs a beginner should have I purchased a starter set from Innova. I really like these discs and they are easier to use than the first set I bought. I recently purchased a Mako3 to help me understand how I am releasing my discs and that should help me learn as I play.

I would highly recommend Compass retro 5,5,0,1 it's a very straight flying disc. Or the River retro, I think it's grip friendly. I haven't tried the River opto yet.

Got a DX Valkyrie as my first driver and it taught me to throw wonderful s-curves really fast. It gave me enough frustration at first but rewarded me with 300' drivers after a couple of weeks.
Now it's super beat it and a perfect roller disc that I can throw flat out of my hand and will turn over all the way.
A Vroc for super straight flights from the start.
A Kastaplast Falk, perfect Fairway Driver to grow into, slightly straighter than a Valkyrie and glides forever.
A Innova Nova for putting and learning how to throw. It has a lot of glide and will not forgive bad releases. It really pushed me to get more spin into my throws, if you're ambitious, it's the perfect practice disc.

I know it's probably here somewhere but I don't want to scroll that far... Innova Valkyrie, It was the first disc I ever bought, at first I hated it because I couldn't throw it well but once I started getting better and into now even it's my favorite disc. It fits all the numbers as a 9,4,-2,2. I can't say enough at how well this disc flies for me now that I am a little better at my game. I currently have 5 of them in my bag.

My top favorite disc as a beginner has to be the Tursas from west side. I’ve thrown it in origio and vip and it’s somewhat similar to the buzzz and buzzz ss but the Tursas holds its turn much longer. I’m still afraid to throw forearm so I really needed that heavy turn in my bag.

the non disc golfer friends I have played with loved the roc when I have played with them. Other ones are the warship and valkyrie and last but not least. everyone I know starting out, loves the p2. a consistent stability is something they can really count on when their angle control or ability to read the wind isn't the best.

Innova valkyrie in dx for beginners especially. Plus all the other plastics that the disc comes in can make it a fantastic "grow into" disc. I favor the polecat as a straight to understable throwing putter inside 275' because my first one was dx and once that became too understable I got a halo polecat and I'm loving the extra stability that the halo plastic provides and my straight to turnover shots have become so much more effortless.

I have to admit that I was very skeptical about buying a Pig. I avoided it for almost 2 years. I tried 3-4 other overstable putters. I finally decided to give the R-Pro Pig a chance. In 3 weeks, it has become my "Precious Child" 😁. I now use it for almost everything, except actually putting, from 250' and in to the basket. The R-Pro plastic is grippy thus making ground play very consistent, ONE skip, that is all...nothing else. The rim is very thick and fits my hands perfectly. The rounded outer edge makes it great for my favorite escape shot, the forehand roller.
